Understanding the behavior of molecular systems under pressure is a fundamental problem in condensed matter physics. In the case of nitrogen, the determination of the phase diagram and in particular of the melting line, are largely open problems. Two independent experiments have reported the presence of a maximum in the nitrogen melting curve, below 90 GPa, however the position and the interpretation of the origin of such maximum differ. By means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory and thermodynamic integration techniques, we have determined the phase diagram of nitrogen in the range between 20 and 100 GPa. We find a maximum in the melting line, related to a transformation in the liquid, from molecular N_2 to polymeric nitrogen accompanied by an insulator-to-metal transition.
Several research groups have recently reported {\em ab initio} calculations of the melting properties of metals based on density functional theory, but there have been unexpectedly large disagreements between results obtained by different approaches. We analyze the relations between the two main approaches, based on calculation of the free energies of solid and liquid and on direct simulation of the two coexisting phases. Although both approaches rely on the use of classical reference systems consisting of parameterized empirical interaction models, we point out that in the free energy approac…
Laser melting of semiconductors has been observed for almost 40 years; surprisingly, it is not well understood where most theoretical simulations show a laser-induced thermal process. $\textit{Ab initio}$ nonadiabatic simulations based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory reveal intrinsic nonthermal melting of silicon, at a temperature far below the thermal melting temperature of 1680 K. Both excitation threshold and time evolution of diffraction intensity agree well with experiment. Nonthermal melting is attributed to excitation-induced drastic changes in bonding electron den…
The melting curve of aluminium has been determined from 0 to ~150 GPa using first principles calculations of the free energies of both the solid and liquid. The calculations are based on density functional theory within the generalised gradient approximation using ultrasoft Vanderbilt pseudopotentials. The free energy of the harmonic solid has been calculated within the quasiharmonic approximation using the small-displacement method; the free energy of the liquid and the anharmonic correction to the free energy of the solid have been calculated via thermodynamic integration from suitable refer…
We present a simple, fast, and reliable method to compute the melting curves of materials with ab initio molecular dynamics. It is based on the two-phase thermodynamic model of [Lin et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 11792 (2003)] and its improved version given by [Desjarlais, Phys. Rev. E, 88, 062145 (2013)]. In this model, the velocity autocorrelation function is utilized to calculate the contribution of the nuclei motion to the entropy of the solid and liquid phases. It is then possible to find the thermodynamic conditions of equal Gibbs free energy between these phases, defining the melting curve…
Raman spectra of thin solid electrolyte films obtained by sputtering a lithium sulfate target in nitrogen plasma are measured and compared to ab initio electronic structure calculations for clusters composed of 28 atoms. Agreement between measured and calculated spectra is obtained when oxygen atoms are replaced by nitrogen atoms and when the nitrogen atoms form bonds with each other. This suggests that the incorporation of nitrogen during the sputtering process leads to structures in the film, which prevent crystallization of these thin film salt glasses.
Recently, we developed a method to construct polynomial interatomic potentials from ab-initio calculations in order to accurately describe laser excited solids [PRL 124, 085501 (2020)]. However, ab-initio methods, and therefore analytical potentials derived from them, commonly do not provide an accurate prediction of the melting temperature. In order to reproduce the experimental melting properties, but keeping the accuracy in the laser excited case, we present here an approach to modify few key coefficients of polynomial interatomic potentials constructed from ab-initio data. We show that, wi…
We report ab initio calculations of the melting curve and Hugoniot of molybdenum for the pressure range 0-400 GPa, using density functional theory (DFT) in the projector augmented wave (PAW) implementation. We use the ``reference coexistence'' technique to overcome uncertainties inherent in earlier DFT calculations of the melting curve of Mo. Our calculated melting curve agrees well with experiment at ambient pressure and is consistent with shock data at high pressure, but does not agree with the high pressure melting curve from static compression experiments. Our calculated P(V) and T(P) Hugo…
Condensation, melting and freezing of nitrogen in a powder of mesoporous silica grains (SBA-15) has been studied by combined volumetric sorption isotherm and scanning calorimetry measurements. Within the mean field model of Saam and Cole for vapor condensation in cylindrical pores a liquid nitrogen sorption isotherm is well described by a bimodal pore radius distribution. It encompasses a narrow peak centered at 3.3 nm, typical of tubular mesopores, and a significantly broader peak characteristic of micropores, located at 1 nm. The material condensed in the micropores as well as the first two …
{\em Ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory in the projector-augmented-wave implementation are used to calculate the free energy and a range of other thermodynamic properties of liquid iron at high pressures and temperatures relevant to the Earth's core. The {\em ab initio} free energy is obtained by using thermodynamic integration to calculate the change of free energy on going from a simple reference system to the {\em ab initio} system, with thermal averages computed by {\em ab initio} molecular dynamics simulation. The reference system consists of the inverse-power pair-p…
Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determined the melting curve of magnesium (Mg) up to ~460 GPa using the solid-liquid coexistence method. Between ~30 and 100 GPa, our melting curve is noticeably lower than those from static experiments, but is in good agreement with recent shock experiments. Up to ~450 GPa, our melting curve is generally consistent with the melting points from first-principles calculations using the small-cell coexistence method. We found that, at high pressures of a few hundred GPa, due to the strong softening of interatomic interactions in the liquid pha…
Using ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory we have performed a theoretical investigation of substitutional boron and nitrogen impurities in silicon carbide (SiC) nanoribbons. We have considered hydrogen terminated SiC ribbons with zigzag and armchair edges. In both systems we verify that the boron and nitrogen atoms energetically prefer to be localized at the edges of the nanoribbons. However, while boron preferentially substitutes a silicon atom, nitrogen prefers to occupy a carbon site. In addition, our electronic-structure calculations indicate that (i) substitutional b…
We present quantum molecular dynamics calculations of thermophysical properties of solid and liquid zirconium in the vicinity of melting. An overview of available experimental data is also presented. We focus on the analysis of thermal expansion, molar enthalpy, resistivity and normal spectral emissivity of solid and liquid Zr. Possible reasons of discrepancies between the first-principle simulations and experiments are discussed. Our calculations reveal a significant volume change on melting in agreement with electrostatic levitation experiments. Meanwhile, we confirm a low value of enthalpy …
We determine and analyze the charge and spin density distributions of nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center in diamond for both the ground and excited states by \emph{ab initio} supercell calculations. We show that the hyperfine tensor of $^{15}$N nuclear spin is negative and strongly anisotropic in the excited state, in contrast to previous models used extensively to explain electron spin resonance measurements. In addition, we detect a significant redistribution of the spin density due to excitation that has serious implications for the quantum register applications of N-V center.
We study the structural stability and dynamical properties of Ar(H2)2 under pressure using first-principles and ab initio molecular dynamics techniques. At low temperatures, Ar(H2)2 is found to stabilize in the cubic C15 Laves structure (MgCu2) and not in the hexagonal C14 Laves structure (MgZn2) as it has been assumed previously. Based on enthalpy energy and phonon calculations, we propose a temperature-induced MgCu2 -> MgZn2 phase transition that may rationalize the existing discrepancies between the sets of Raman and infrared vibron measurements. Our AIMD simulations suggest that the meltin…
Accurate prediction of thermodynamic properties requires an extremely accurate representation of the free energy surface. Requirements are twofold -- first, the inclusion of the relevant finite-temperature mechanisms, and second, a dense volume-temperature grid on which the calculations are performed. A systematic workflow for such calculations requires computational efficiency and reliability, and has not been available within an ab initio framework so far. Here, we elucidate such a framework involving direct upsampling, thermodynamic integration and machine-learning potentials, allowing us t…
There has been a long debate on the stable phase of iron under the Earth's inner core conditions. Because of the solid-liquid coexistence at the inner core boundary, the thermodynamic stability of solid phases directly relates to their melting temperatures, which remains considerable uncertainty. In the present study, we utilized a semi-empirical potential fitted to high-temperature ab initio data to perform a thermodynamic integration from classical systems described by this potential to ab initio systems. This method provides a smooth path for thermodynamic integration and significantly redu…
We report ab initio calculations of the melting curve of molybdenum for the pressure range 0-400 GPa. The calculations employ density functional theory (DFT) with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional in the projector augmented wave (PAW) implementation. We present tests showing that these techniques accurately reproduce experimental data on low-temperature b.c.c. Mo, and that PAW agrees closely with results from the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave implementation. The work attempts to overcome the uncertainties inherent in earlier DFT calculations of the mel…
The adsorption and dissociation of nitrogen molecule on Fe(111) surface is studied by density functional theory calculations. The simulation results show that the molecule needs to acquire parallel orientation with respect to the surface for the adsorption and dissociation. In addition, Fe(111) surface is more active in dissociating N2 than Fe(100) surface due to its morphology. The interaction between antibonding molecular orbitals of N2 and partially filled $3d$ orbitals of Fe atoms on the surface may be the key to the molecular dissociation of N2. To break down the triple bond of N2, the el…
The first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method based on density functional theory is used to investigate electronic structure and magnetic properties of hypothetical binary compounds of I$^{A}$ subgroup elements with nitrogen (LiN, NaN, KN and RbN) in assumed three types of cristalline structure (rock salt, wurtzite and zinc-blende). We find that, due to the spin polarized \textit{p} orbitas of N, all four compounds are half-metallic ferromagnets with wide energy bandgaps (up to 2.0 eV). The calculated total magnetic moment in all investigated compounds for all thre…
Adsorption of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen on the (111) surface of delta-Plutonium has been studied within the framework of density functional theory using the full-potential linear augmented plane wave plus local basis (FP-LAPW+lo) method. All adatoms prefer to bind at the higher coordinated hollow sites, with the chemisorption energies for C, N, and O being 6.539 eV, 6.714 eV, and 8.2 eV respectively. The work function and the surface Pu magnetic moments respectively increased and decreased in all cases upon chemisorption. The partial charges inside the muffin tins spheres, difference charge…
Polymeric nitrogen with single bonds can be created from the molecular form at high pressure and due to large energy difference between triple and single bonds it is interesting as energetic material. Its structure and properties are, however, still not well understood. We studied amorphous nitrogen by \textit{ab initio} simulations, employing molecular dynamics and evolutionary algorithms. Amorphous nitrogen was prepared at pressure of 120 GPa by quenching from hot liquid, by pressure-induced amorphization of molecular crystal and by evolutionary search. All three amorphous forms were found t…
We use first principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the thermodynamic integration method to study the hcp-bcc transition and melting of beryllium up to a pressure of 1600~GPa. We derive the melting line by equating solid and liquid Gibbs free energies, and represent it by a Simon Glatzel fit $T_m= 1564~\text{K} (1 + P/(15.6032 ~\text{GPa}))^{0.383}$, which is in good agreement with previous two-phase simulations below 6000~K. We also derive the hcp-bcc solid-solid phase boundary and show the quasiharmonic approximation underestimates the stability of the hcp structure, predicting…
The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is a promising candidate for realizing the spin qubits concept in quantum information. Even though this defect is known for a long time, its electronic structure and other properties have not yet been explored in detail. We study the properties of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond through density functional theory within the local spin density approximation, using supercell calculations. While this theory is strictly applicable for ground state properties, we are able to give an estimate for the energy sequence of the excited states of this defect. W…
Titanium-based oxides are abundant, chemically stable, non-toxic, and highly versatile materials, with applications ranging from photovoltaics to catalysis. For rutile and anatase phases of Titanium dioxide (TiO2), the bandgap ranges from 3.0-3.2 eV, which are too large to absorb in the visible range (400 nm - 700 nm), resulting in poor photo-catalytic efficiency. Nitrogen doping into TiO2 has been able to narrow its bandgap, forming an absorption tail in the visible-light region. However, TiO2 has limits to which it can be doped, suggesting investigations of the oxygen-deficient Ti203. Using …
Density functional molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to understand the finite temperature behavior of Au$_{19}$ and Au$_{20}$ clusters. Au$_{20}$ has been reported to be a unique molecule having tetrahedral geometry, a large HOMO-LUMO energy gap and an atomic packing similar to that of the bulk gold (J. Li et al., Science, {\bf 299} 864, 2003). Our results show that the geometry of Au$_{19}$ is exactly identical to that of Au$_{20}$ with one missing corner atom (called as vacancy). Surprisingly, our calculated heat capacities for this nearly identical pair of gold cluster ex…
Point defects are responsible for a wide range of optoelectronic properties in materials, making it crucial to engineer their concentrations for novel materials design. However, considering the plethora of defects in co-doped semiconducting and dielectric materials and the dependence of defect formation energies on heat treatment parameters, process design based on an experimental trial and error approach is not an efficient strategy. This makes it necessary to explore computational pathways for predicting defect equilibria during heat treatments. The accumulated experimental knowledge on defe…
Ab initio calculations based on the Density Functional Theory are used to show that the Debye frequency is a linear function of density to a high accuracy for several elemental solids at pressures (at least) up to 360 GPa. This implies that the ratio of density over the (Debye-frequency-based) vibrational Grüneisen parameter is a linear function of density in this region. Numerical data from first principles calculations for several systems at temperatures up to 2000K suggest that this is also true for the thermal Grüneisen parameter in the same range of pressure. Our analytical form of the vi…
Diatomic nitrogen is an archetypal molecular system known for its exceptional stability and complex behavior at high pressures and temperatures, including rich solid polymorphism, formation of energetic states, and an insulator-to-metal transformation coupled to a change in chemical bonding. However, the thermobaric conditions of the fluid molecular-polymer phase boundary and associated metallization have not been experimentally established. Here, by applying dynamic laser heating of compressed nitrogen and using fast optical spectroscopy to study electronic properties, we observe a transforma…
The high-pressure melting diagram of iron is a vital ingredient for the geodynamic modeling of planetary interiors. Nonetheless, available data for molten iron show an alarming discrepancy. Herein, we propose an efficient one-phase approach to capture the solid-liquid transition of iron under extreme conditions. Our basic idea is to extend the statistical moment method to determine the density of iron in the TPa region. On that basis, we adapt the work-heat equivalence principle to appropriately link equation-of-state parameters with melting properties. This strategy allows explaining cutting-…
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes can provide reactive sites on the porphyrin-like defects. It's well known that many porphyrins have transition metal atoms, and we have explored transition metal atoms bonded to those porphyrin-like defects in N-doped carbon nanotubes. The electronic structure and transport are analyzed by means of a combination of density functional theory and recursive Green's functions methods. The results determined the Heme B-like defect (an iron atom bonded to four nitrogens) as the most stable and with a higher polarization current for a single defect. With randomly posit…
Lattice stability and metastability, as well as melting, are important features of the physics and chemistry of dense hydrogen. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), the classical superheating limit and melting line of metallic hydrogen are investigated up to 1.5 TPa. The computations show that the classical superheating degree is about 100 K, and the classical melting curve becomes flat at a level of 350 K when beyond 500 GPa. This information allows us to estimate the well depth and the potential barriers that must be overcome when the crystal melts. Inclusion of nuclear quantum effects…
There has been a major controversy over the past seven years about the high-pressure melting curves of transition metals. Static compression (diamond-anvil cell: DAC) experiments up to the Mbar region give very low melting slopes dT_m/dP, but shock-wave (SW) data reveal transitions indicating much larger dT_m/dP values. Ab initio calculations support the correctness of the shock data. In a very recent letter, Belonoshko et al. propose a simple and elegant resolution of this conflict for molybdenum. Using ab initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), they show that the high-P…
Nitrogen oxides are textbook class of molecular compounds, with extensive industrial applications. Nitrogen and oxygen are also among the most abundant elements in the universe. We explore the N-O system at 0 K and up to 500 GPa though ab initio evolutionary simulations. Results show that two phase transformations of stable molecular NO2 exist at 7 and 64 GPa, and followed by decomposition of NO2 at 91 GPa. All of the NO+NO3- structures are found to be metastable at T=0 K, so experimentally reported ionic NO+NO3- is either metastable or stabilized by temperature. Upon increasing pressure, N2O5…
The local adsorption geometries of the (2x2)-N and the (sqrt(3)x sqrt(3))R30^o -N phases on the Ru(0001) surface are determined by analyzing low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) intensity data. For both phases, nitrogen occupies the threefold hcp site. The nitrogen sinks deeply into the top Ru layer resulting in a N-Ru interlayer distance of 1.05 AA and 1.10 AA in the (2x2) and the (sqrt(3)x sqrt(3))R30^o unit cell, respectively. This result is attributed to a strong N binding to the Ru surface (Ru--N bond length = 1.93 AA) in both phases as also evidenced by ab-initio calculations which rev…
Using ab initio density functional total energy and molecular dynamics simulations, we study the effects of various forms of nitrogen post deposition anneal (PDA) on the electric properties of hafnia in the context of its application as a gate dielectric in field effect transistors (FET). We consider the atomic structure and energetics of nitrogen containing defects which can be formed during the PDA in various N-based ambients: N2, N+2, N, NH3, NO, N2O. We analyse the role of such defects in fixed charge accumulation, electron trapping and in the growth of the interface SiOx layer. We find th…
The energy landscape of helium-nitrogen mixtures is explored by ab initio evolutionary searches, which predicted several stable helium-nitrogen compounds in the pressure range from 25 to 100 GPa. In particular, the monoclinic structure of HeN$_{22}$ consists of neutral He atoms, partially ionic dimers N$_{2}$$^{δ-}$, and lantern-like cages N$_{20}$$^{δ+}$. The presence of helium not only greatly enhances structural diversity of nitrogen solids, but also tremendously lowers the formation pressure of nitrogen salt. The unique nitrogen framework of (HeN$_{20}$)$^{δ+}$N$_{2}$$^{δ-}$ may be quencha…
Charged nitrogen dimers are ubiquitous in high-pressure binary metal-nitrogen systems. They are known to possess integer formal charges x varying from one through four. Here, we present the investigation of the binary alkali- and alkaline earth metal-nitrogen systems, Na-N, Ca-N, Sr-N, Ba-N to 70 GPa. We report on compounds-Na3(N2)4, Ca3(N2)4, Sr3(N2)4, and Ba(N2)3-featuring charged nitrogen dimers with paradigm-breaking non-integer charges, x = 0.67, 0.75 and 1.5. The metallic nature of all four compounds is deduced from ab initio calculations. The conduction electrons occupy the pi* antibond…
Using ab initio evolutionary simulations, we predict the existence of five novel stable Li-N compounds at pressures from 0 to 100 GPa (Li13N, Li5N, Li3N2, LiN2, and LiN5). Structures of these compounds contain of isolated N ions, N2 dimers, polyacetylene-like N chains and N5 rings, respectively. The structure of Li13N consists of Li atoms and Li12N icosahedra (with N atom in the center of the Li12 icosahedron) such icosahedra are notdescribed by Wade-Jemmis electron counting rules and are unique. Electronic structure of Li-N compounds is found to dramatically depend on composition and pressure…
We have combined ab initio molecular dynamics with the intrinsic reaction coordinate in order to investigate the mechanisms of stability and pyrolysis of N$_{4}$-- N$_{120}$ fullerene-like nitrogen cages. The stability of the cages was evaluated in terms of the activation barriers and the activation Gibbs energies of their thermal-induced breaking. We found that binding energies, bond lengths, and quantum-mechanical descriptors failed to predict the stability of the cages. However, we derived a simple topological rule that adjacent hexagons on the cage surface resulted in its instability. For …
In this paper, we have analysed the electronic and mechanical properties of Nitrogen(N) doped (6,1) SWCNTs based on first-principles and Molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. A schematic N-doping on SWCNT was performed along zigzag(zz) and armchair(ac) direction. Armchair doping is considered parallel to the tube axis while the zigzag is along the cross-section perpendicular to the tube axis. In doping pattern (both zz and ac) we have observed the variation in electronic properties for even number of N-doping and odd number of N-doping. To study the mechanical properties we have adopted ab-initio…
We report an {\it ab initio} simulation study of changes in structural and dynamic properties of liquid Si at 7 pressures ranging from 10.2 GPa to 24.3 GPa along the isothermal line 1150~K, which is above the minimum of the melting line. The increase of pressure from 10.2 GPa to 16 GPa causes strong reduction in the tetrahedral ordering of the most close neighbors. The diffusion coefficient shows a linear decay vs drop in atomic volume, that agrees with theoretical prediction for simple liquid metals, thus not showing any feature at the pressures corresponding to the different crystal phase bo…
An ab initio molecular dynamics study of femtosecond laser processing of germanium is presented in this paper. The method based on the finite temperature density functional theory is adopted to probe the structural change, thermal motion of the atoms, dynamic property of the velocity autocorrelation, and the vibrational density of states. Starting from a cubic system at room temperature (300 K) containing 64 germanium atoms with an ordered arrangement of 1.132 nm in each dimension, the femtosecond laser processing is simulated by imposing the Nose Hoover thermostat to the electronic subsystem …
The phase diagram and equation of state of dense nitrogen are of interest in understanding the fundamental physics and chemistry under extreme conditions, including planetary processes, and in discovering new materials. We predict several stable phases of nitrogen at multi-TPa pressures, including a P4/nbm structure consisting of partially charged N2 pairs and N5 tetrahedra, which is stable in the range 2.5-6.8 TPa. This is followed by a modulated layered structure between 6.8 and 12.6 TPa, which also exhibits a significant charge transfer. The P4/nbm metallic nitrogen salt and the modulated s…
Electron and phonon spectra dynamics, as well as features of structural transitions and melting of sodium under pressure within range 0 to 100 GPa are investigated. Electron and phonon spectra of crystal sodium are calculated ab initio within the density functional theory by means of the LMTART-7 software package (Savrasov-Savrasov: 1992; Savrasov: 1996; Savrasov: 2004), allowing the fully potential method of linear muffin-tin orbitals. Using the Lindemann measure and the calculated phonon spectra the theoretical values of melting points corresponding to the experimental data (Gregoryanz, et a…
The metallic regime of the hydrogen plasma is studied by ab initio Molecular Dynamics simulations, for classical protons and fully degenerate electrons, in the strong coupling regime of the protons. The breakdown of linear screening observed for decreasing density gives rise to a surprisingly rich low-temperature phase diagram, showing in particular a dramatic drop of the melting temperature of the proton crystal. Extensive dynamical simulations reveal the remarkable persistence of a weakly damped high-frequency ion acoustic mode (plasmon-like), even under conditions of strong electron screeni…
Fluorescent paramagnetic defects in solids have become attractive systems for quantum information processing in the recent years. One of the leading contenders is the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond with visible emission but alternative solution in technologically mature host is an immediate quest for many applications in this field. It has been recently found that various polytypes of silicon carbide (SiC), that are standard semiconductors with wafer scale technology, can host nitrogen-vacancy defect (NV) that could be an alternative qubit candidate with emission in the …
