In this paper we develop a formalism to evaluate wave functions in momentum and coordinate space for the resonant states dynamically generated in a unitary coupled channel approach. The on shell approach for the scattering matrix, commonly used, is also obtained in Quantum Mechanics with a separable potential, which allows one to write wave functions in a trivial way. We develop useful relationships among the couplings of the dynamically generated resonances to the different channels and the wave functions at the origin. The formalism provides an intuitive picture of the resonances in the coupled channel approach, as bound states of one bound channel, which decays into open ones. It also provides an insight and practical rules for evaluating couplings of the resonances to external sources and how to deal with final state interaction in production processes. As an application of the formalism we evaluate the wave functions of the two $Λ(1405)$ states in the $πΣ$, $\bar{K} N$ and other coupled channels.
We compare recent lattice results on fluctuations and correlations of strangeness, baryon number and electric charge obtained with p4 improved staggered action with the prediction of hadron resonance gas model. We show that hadron resonance gas can describe these fluctuations reasonably well if the hadron properties are as calculated on the lattice.
The time-evolution of quantum meson fields in O(4)-linear sigma model is treated approximately. It is shown that the amplification of the amplitudes of pion modes with low momenta occurs by means of both the parametric resonance and the forced oscillation.
For several decades, the $σ/f_0(500)$ and $κ/K_0^*(700)$ resonances have been subject to long-standing debate. Both their existence and properties were controversial until very recently. In this tutorial review we compare model-independent dispersive and analytic techniques versus unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory, when applied to the lightest scalar mesons $σ/f_0(500)$ and $κ/K_0^*(700)$. Generically, the former have settled the long-standing controversy about the existence of these states, providing a precise determination of their parameters, whereas unitarization of chiral effective th…
The exclusive reaction $pp \to pp (K^{*0} \bar{K}^{*0} \to K^{+}π^{-}K^{-}π^{+})$ for the LHC experiments is discussed. The amplitudes for the reaction are formulated within the tensor-pomeron approach. We consider two diffractive mechanisms: the $f_{2}(1950)$ $s$-channel exchange mechanism and the $K^{*0}$-exchange mechanism. First mechanism is a candidate for central diffractive production of tensor glueball and the second one is an irreducible continuum. Comparison with data from WA102 experiment are made and predictions for LHC experiments are given. We find that including the continuum co…
In order to better understand the fundamental issue regarding the compatibility between the quark-shell picture and that of resonances in meson-nucleon scattering in large $N_c$ QCD we extend the work of Cohen and Lebed on mixed symmetric $\ell $ = 1 baryons to analyze excited states with $\ell $ = 3. We give an explicit proof on the degeneracy of mass eigenvalues of a simple Hamiltonian including operators up to order $\mathcal{O}(N^0_c)$ \emph{i. e.} neglecting $1/N_c$ corrections in the quark-shell picture in the large $N_c$ limit. We obtain three degenerate multiplets formed of $\ell = 3$ …
Spin-$\ffh$ resonance contributions in pion-nucleon scattering are investigated within the coupled channel $K$-matrix approach for c.m. energies up to $\sqrt s=$ 2 GeV. All previously studied $πN$, $2πN$, $ηN$, $K Λ$, $K Σ$, and $ωN$ final states are included. We find a significant improvement of $χ^2$ in almost all channels by inclusion of the spin-$\ffh$ states. The obtained coupling parameters are discussed.
The Regge trajectory of an elastic resonance can be calculated from dispersion theory, instead of fitted phenomenologically, using only its pole parameters as input. This also provides a correct treatment of resonance widths in Regge trajectories, essential for very wide resonances. In this work we first calculate the K*0(1430) Regge trajectory, finding the ordinary almost real and linear behavior, typical of quark-antiquark resonances. In contrast, for the K*0(800) meson, the resulting Regge trajectory is non-linear and has a much smaller slope than ordinary resonances, being remarkably simil…
We study the width of a two-body resonance in a coupled-channel system. We demonstrate how the width does not come only determined by the available phase space for its decay to the detection channel, but it greatly depends on the relative position of the mass of the resonance with respect to the masses of the coupled-channels generating the state. Our results are consistent with the experimental observation of narrow hadrons lying well above their lowest decay threshold.
The K-matrix method is often used to describe overlapping resonances. It guarantees the unitarity of the scattering matrix but its parameters are not resonances masses and widths. It is also unclear how to separate resonant and background contributions and to describe background in terms of phase shifts. The Breit-Wigner (BW) approach operates with parameters having direct experimental meaning but a simple sum of the BW functions is not unitary. We show how to construct the unitary S-matrix by taking into account the interference of the BW functions. The method is simple and straightforward, b…
We perform an analytical study of the scattering matrix and bound states in problems with many physical coupled channels. We establish the relationship of the couplings of the states to the different channels, obtained from the residues of the scattering matrix at the poles, with the wave functions for the different channels. The couplings basically reflect the value of the wave functions around the origin in coordinate space. In the concrete case of the X(3872) resonance, understood as a bound state of $\ddn$ and $\ddc$ (and $c.c.$), with the $\ddn$ loosely bound, we find that the couplings t…
We analyze excited baryon properties via a 1/N_c expansion from two perspectives: as resonances in meson-nucleon scattering, and as single-quark excitations in the context of a simple quark model. For both types of analysis one can derive novel patterns of degeneracy that emerge as N_c --> \infty, and that are shown to be compatible with one another. This helps justify the single-quark excitation picture and may give some insight into its successes. We also find that in the large N_c limit one of the S_{11} baryons does not couple to the pi-N channel but couples to the eta-N channel. This is e…
We present a nucleon resonance analysis by simultaneously considering all pion- and photon-induced experimental data on the final states $γN$, $πN$, $2πN$, $ηN$, $KΛ$, $KΣ$, and $ωN$ for energies from the nucleon mass up to $\sqrt s = 2$ GeV. In this analysis we find strong evidence for various higher lying resonances as, e.g., the $P_{13}(1900)$. The $ωN$ production mechanism is dominated by large $P_{11}(1710)$ and $P_{13}(1900)$ contributions.
We present several possible hadronic states found in coupled-channel models within the on-shell approximation. The interaction potential is constructed as a sum of the tree-level Feynman diagrams calculated with the effective Lagrangians. Based on the recent empirical data, we illustrate the possible existence of several baryonic and mesonic states with definite quantum numbers in the model. We give their properties for the purpose of further study and discuss the potential of finding them in future experiments.
By means of a coupled channel non-perturbative unitary approach, it is possible to extend the strong constrains of Chiral Perturbation Theory to higher energies. In particular, it is possible to reproduce the lowest lying resonances in meson-meson scattering up to 1.2 GeV using the parameters of the O(p^2) and O(p^4) Chiral Lagrangian. We report on an update of these results examining their possible relevance for meson spectroscopy.
We present first predictions of the cross sections and differential distributions for the exclusive reaction $pp \to pp K^{*0} \bar{K}^{*0}$ contributing to the $K^{+} K^{-} π^{+} π^{-}$ channel. The amplitudes for the reaction are formulated within the nonperturbative tensor-pomeron approach. We consider separately the $f_{2}(1950)$ $s$-channel exchange mechanism and the $K^{*0}$ $t/u$-channel exchange mechanism, focusing on their specificities. First mechanism is a candidate for the central diffractive production of tensor glueball and the second one is an irreducible continuum. We adjust pa…
We analyse tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau decays within the framework of the resonance chiral theory of QCD. We have worked out the relevant Lagrangian that describes the axial-vector current hadronization contributing to these processes, and the new coupling constants that arise have been constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding spectral function within QCD. Hence we compare the theoretical framework with the experimental data, obtaining a good quality fit from the ALEPH spectral function and branching ratio. We also get values for the mass and on-shell width of the a_1(…
We study the pion mass dependence of the rho(770) and f_0(600) masses and widths from one and two-loop unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show the consistency of one-loop calculations with lattice results for the M_rho, f_pi and the isospin 2 scattering length a_20.Then, we develop and apply the modified Inverse Amplitude Method formalism for two-loop ChPT. In contrast to the f_0(600), the rho(770) is rather sensitive to the two-loop ChPT parameters --our main source of systematic uncertainty. We thus provide two-loop unitarized fits constrained by lattice information on M_rho, f_pi, by…
Hexaquarks constitute a natural extension of complex quark systems like also tetra- and pentaquarks do. To this end the current status of $d^*(2380)$ in both experiment and theory is shortly reviewed. Recent high-precision measurements in the nucleon-nucleon channel and analyses thereof have established $d^*(2380)$ as an indisputable resonance in the long-sought dibaryon channel. Important features of this $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$ state are its narrow width and its deep binding relative to the $Δ(1232)Δ(1232)$ threshold. Its decay branchings favor theoretical calculations predicting a compact hexaqua…
In this note we first introduce the theoretical formalism of the unitarization of the two-body scattering both in the infinite and finite volumes. Then we apply this formalism to the study of the $Z_c(3900)$ resonance in the $J/ψ\,π$ and $D\bar{D}^{*}$ coupled-channel scattering. The recent lattice finite-volume spectra are confronted with our predictions.
We study the $Λ(1520)$ resonance in a coupled channel approach involving the $πΣ(1385)$, $KΞ(1530)$, $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ channels. Implementing unitarity in coupled channels, we make an analysis of the relative importance of the different mechanisms which contribute to the dynamical structure of this resonance. From experimental information on some partial wave amplitudes and constraints imposed by unitarity, we get a comprehensive description of the amplitudes and hence the couplings to the different channels. We test these amplitudes in different reactions like $K^-p\toΛππ$, $γp\to K^+K^-p$,…
The dependence of the Z-resonance shape on the location of the threshold of the N\bar{N} production (N is the 4th generation neutrino) is analyzed. The bounds on the existence of 4th generation are derived from the comparison of the theoretical expression for the Z-lineshape with the experimental data. The 4th generation is excluded at 95% C. L. for m_N<46.7\pm 0.2 GeV.
Accepting that there is a mass gap above the electroweak scale, the Electroweak Effective Theory (EWET) is an appropriate tool to describe this situation. Since the EWET couplings contain information on the unknown high-energy dynamics, we consider a generic strongly-coupled scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, where the known particle fields are coupled to heavier states. Then, and by integrating out these heavy fields, we study the tracks of the lightest resonances into the couplings. The determination of the low-energy couplings (LECs) in terms of resonance parameters can be made more…
The interactions of $\bar{D}^{(*)} Λ_c - \bar{D}^{(*)}Σ_c^{(*)}$ are studied within the framework of a dynamical coupled-channel approach. A series of bound states and resonances with different spin and parity are dynamically generated in the hidden charm sector. Four $S$-wave bound states are found in the mass range of 4.3 to 4.5 GeV, close to the pentaquark states observed by LHCb. Two of the states have a spin parity of $J^P= 1/2^-$ and the other two have $J^P=3/2^-$. In addition, several resonances with different spin and parity in higher partial waves are predicted.
Identifying the zero-range exchange of vector mesons as the driving force for the s-wave scattering of pseudo-scalar mesons off the baryon ground states, the spectrum of ${3/2}^-$ molecules is computed. We predict a strongly bound 15-plet of $C=-1$ states. A narrow crypto-exotic octet of charm-zero states is foreseen. In the $C=+1$ sector a sextet of narrow resonances is formed due to the interaction of D mesons with the baryon decuplet. A strongly bound triplet of double-charm states is a consequence of coupled-channel dynamics driven by the D mesons.
Excited hadrons are seen as resonances in the scattering of lighter stable hadrons like $π$, $K$ and $η$. Many decay into multiple final states necessitating coupled-channel analyses. Recently it has become possible to obtain coupled-channel scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD. Using large diverse bases of operators it is possible to obtain reliable finite volume spectra at energies where multiple channels are open. Utilising the finite volume formalism proposed by Lüscher and extended by several others, scattering amplitudes can be extracted from the finite volume spectra. Recent applicati…
We present the first calculation of coupled-channel meson-meson scattering in the isospin $=1$, $G$-parity negative sector, with channels $πη$, $K\overline{K}$ and $πη'$, in a first-principles approach to QCD. From the discrete spectrum of eigenstates in three volumes extracted from lattice QCD correlation functions we determine the energy dependence of the $S$-matrix, and find that the $S$-wave features a prominent cusp-like structure in $πη\to πη$ close to $K\overline{K}$ threshold coupled with a rapid turn on of amplitudes leading to the $K\overline{K}$ final-state. This behavior is traced …
