We present the theoretical results on the forward Lambda_b production in p-p collisions at LHC energies. It can give us useful information on the Regge trajectories of the bottom mesons.
Transverse polarization of Lambda hyperons produced in p p and p Pb collisions is discussed. A factorized description in the intermediate to high p_T region is considered that involves transverse momentum and spin dependence in the fragmentation process. Consequences and suggestions for investigations at LHC are pointed out for the process p + p -> Lambda^uparrow + jets + X at midrapidity and p + p/Pb -> Lambda^uparrow + X in the forward region.
Using the covariant constituent quark model previously developed by us we calculate the differential rate and the forward-backward asymmetries on the lepton and hadron side for the rare baryon decays Lambda_b -> Lambda l+ l- (l=e, mu, tau) and Lambda_b -> Lambda gamma. We use helicity methods to write down a three-fold joint angular decay distribution for the cascade decay Lambda_b -> Lambda (-> p pi-) + J_eff (-> l+ l-). Through appropriate angular integrations we obtain expressions for the rates, the lepton-side forward-backward (FB) asymmetry and the polarization of the daughter baryon Lamb…
We study the doubly-polarized lepton pair forward-backward asymmetries in (Lambda_b -> Lambda l^+ l^-) decay using a general, model independent form of the effective Hamiltonian. We present the general expression for nine double-polarization forward-backward asymmetries. It is observed that, the study of the forward-backward asymmetries of the doubly-polarized lepton pair is a very useful tool for establishing new physics beyond the standard model. Moreover, the correlation between forward-backward asymmetry and branching ratio is investigated. It is shown that there exist certain certain regi…
The asymmetries in the forward region production cross section of Lambda_c^+/Lambda_c^- and Lambda_b^0/\bar{Lambda}_b^0 are predicted using the heavy quark recombination mechanism for pp collisions at 7 TeV and 14 TeV. Using non-perturbative parameters determined from various previous experiments, we find that A_p(Lambda_c^+/Lambda_c^-) ~ 1-2% and A_p(Lambda_b^0/\bar{Lambda}_b^0) ~ 1-3% in the forward region covered by the LHCb experiment.
We study the process pp->QVX (where Q=t,b and V=g,gamma,Z) through the anomalous interactions of the new heavy quarks at the LHC. Considering the present limits on the masses and mixings, the signatures of the heavy quark anomalous interactions are discussed and analysed at the LHC for the center of mass energy of 13 TeV. An important sensitivity to anomalous couplings kappa_{g}^{t'}/Lambda=0.10 TeV^{-1}, kappa_γ^{t'}/Lambda=0.14 TeV^{-1}, kappa_{Z}^{t'}/Lambda=0.19 TeV^{-1} and kappa_{g}^{b'}/Lambda=0.15 TeV^{-1}, kappa_{Z}^{b'}/Lambda=0.19 TeV$^{-1}, kappa_γ^{b'}/Lambda=0.30 TeV$^{-1} for th…
Using the most general, model independent form of the effective Hamiltonian, the exclusive, rare baryonic (Lambda_b -> Lambda l^+ l^- ~l=μ,τ) decay is analyzed. We study sensitivity of the branching ratio and lepton forward-backward asymmetry to the new Wilson coefficients. Is is shown that these physical quantities are quite sensitive to the new Wilson coefficients. Determination of the position of zero value of the forward-backward asymmetry can serve as a useful tool for establishing new physics beyond the standard model, as well as fixing the sign of the new Wilson coefficients.
We consider polarized Lambda hyperon production in proton-proton scattering, p p -> (Λ^\uparrow jet) jet X, in the kinematical region of the LHC experiments, in particular the ALICE experiment. We present a new Lambda polarization observable that arises from the Sivers effect in the fragmentation process. It can be large even at midrapidity and therefore, is of interest for high energy hadron collider experiments. Apart from its potential to shed light on the mechanisms behind the phenomenon of Lambda polarization arising in unpolarized hadronic collisions, the new observable in principle also…
Inclusive Standard Model Higgs boson pair production and subsequent decay to same-sign dileptons via weak gauge W bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider has the capability to determine the Higgs boson self-coupling, lambda. The large top quark mass limit is found not to be a good approximation for the signal if one wishes to utilize differential distributions in the analysis. We find that it should be possible at the LHC with design luminosity to establish that the Standard Model Higgs boson has a non-zero self-coupling and that lambda/lambda(SM) can be restricted to a range of 0--3.7 at 95%…
We study the exclusive (Lambda_b -> Λl^+ l^-) decay in the Appelquist, Chang, Dobrescu model within one universal extra dimension. We investigate the sensitivity of the branching ratio, lepton polarization and forward-backward asymmetry A_{FB} to the compactification parameter (1/R) We obtain that the branching ratio changed about 50% compared to the SM value, when (1/R=200 GeV) and zero position of the forward-backward asymmetry is shifted to the left compared to the SM result. Therefore measurement of the branching ratio of (Lambda_b -> Lambda l^+ l^-) decay and determination of zero positio…
We consider the phenomenological implications of the assumption that baryons are systems of three quarks connected through gluon string junction. The transfer of baryon number in rapidity space due to the string junction propagation is considered in detail. At high energies this process leads to a significant effect on the net baryon production in hN collisions at mid-rapidities. The numerical results for midrapidity inclusive densities of different secondaries in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. One universal value lambda ~ …
The resonant production of the fourth family slepton ~l_4 via R-parity violating interactions of supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider has been investigated. We study the decay mode of ~l_4 into the fourth family neutrino nu_4 and W boson. The signal will be a like-sign dimuon and dijet if the fourth family neutrino has Majorana nature. We discuss the constraints on the R-parity violating couplings lambda and lambda' of the fourth family charged slepton at the LHC with the center of mass energies of 7, 10 and 14 TeV.
We test several BFKL-like evolution equations for unintegrated gluon distributions against forward-central dijet production at LHC. Our study is based on fitting the evolution scenarios to the LHC data using the high energy factorization approach. Thus, as a by-product, we obtain a set of LHC-motivated unintegrated gluon distributions ready to use. We utilize this application by calculating azimuthal decorrelations for forward-central dijet production and compare with existing data.
The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, $\sqrt{s}=$14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-$p_T$ physics, but also low-$x$ and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-$x$ and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments.
With the upcoming Run 3 of the LHC, the FASERv and SND@LHC detectors will start a new era of neutrino physics using the far-forward high-energy neutrino beam produced in collisions at ATLAS. This emerging LHC neutrino physics program requires reliable estimates of the LHC's forward neutrino fluxes and their uncertainties. In this paper we provide a new fast-neutrino flux simulation, implemented as a RIVET module, to address this issue. We present the expected energy distributions going through the FASERv and SND@LHC detectors based on various commonly used event generators, analyze the origin …
I discuss and connect a number of topics in small-x physics at HERA and at LHC, pointing out recent progress and open questions in theory and phenomenology.
We present some inclusive and exclusive diffractive processes to be studied at the LHC, namely QCD, quartic anomalous couplings between $γ$ and $W/Z$ bosons and diffractive Higgs processes.
We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a means to search for new physics. We also review the current diffractive programs at the Tevatron and HERA, focusing in particular on measurements which will have a direct impact on the case for forward detectors at the LHC.
At the Large Hadron Collider, we prove the feasibility to detect pair production of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson h of a Type II 2-Higgs Doublet Model through the process q \bar q' --> Vhh (Higgs-strahlung, V=W+-,Z), in presence of two h --> b \bar b decays. We also show that, through such production and decay channels, one has direct access to the following Higgs self-couplings, thus enabling one to distinguish between a standard and the Supersymmetric version of the above model: lambda_(Hhh) -- which constrains the form of the Higgs potential -- as well as lambda_(W+- H+- h) and lambda_(Z…
The measurement of sparticle masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the LHC is analysed, in the scenario where the lightest neutralino decays into three quarks. Such decays, occurring through the baryon-number violating coupling lambda"\_ijk, pose a severe challenge to the capability of the LHC detectors since the final state has no missing energy signature and a high jet multiplicity. We focus on the case of non-zero lambda"\_212 which is the most difficult experimentally. The proposed method is valid over a wide range of SUGRA parameter space with lambda"\_212 between 10^{-5}…
We perform a BFKL-NLL analysis of forward jet production at HERA which leads to a good description of data over the full kinematical domain. We also predict the azimuthal angle dependence of Mueller-Navelet jet production at the Tevatron and the LHC using the BFKL NLL formalism.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) recently started operating at 8 TeV. In this note, we update our earlier LHC forward hadronic scattering predictions \cite{physicsreports,update7, blackdisk}, giving new predictions, including errors, for the $pp$ total and inelastic cross sections, the $ρ$-value, the nuclear slope parameter $B$, $dσ_{\rm el}/dt$, and the large gap survival probability at 8 TeV.
This is a continuation of recent studies of $Υ(nS)$ production at the LHC in pp collisions. Our previous studies were for rapidity y=-1 to 1 for the CMS detector, while the present study is for y=2.5 to 4.0 at the LHC.
The LHC data on the forward heavy flavour hadron production can be a new unique source for estimation of intrinsic charm and bottom contributions to the proton. For example, we analyze the forward heavy baryon production, namely $Λ_b$-baryon, within the soft QCD quark gluon string model and present the predictions for observables which could be measured at the LHC. We also present some predictions for the $D$-meson production in $pp$ collisions made within the perturbative QCD including the intrinsic charm in the proton that can be verified at the LHC.
We discuss jet production at forward rapidities at the LHC. In this region QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. We describe results of using high-energy factorization techniques, which allow one to take into account both kinds of corrections to higher orders in QCD.
Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange Lambda baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of L…
The LHC has successfully run for a long period at half energy, 7 TeV. In this note, we update earlier full-energy Large Hadron Collider (LHC) forward hadronic scattering predictions \cite{physicsreports}, giving new predictions, including errors, for the $pp$ total and inelastic cross sections, the $ρ$-value, the nuclear slope parameter $B$, $dσ_{\rm el}/dt$, and the large gap survival probability at the current 7 TeV energy.
We present some physics topics that can be studied at the LHC using proton tagging. We distinguish the QCD (Pomeron structure, BFKL analysis...) from the exploratory physics topics (HIggs boson, anomalous couplings between photons and $W/Z$ bosons
We argue that string percolation is in the origin of i) an approximately flat rapidity distribution and of ii) an approximately constant forward-backward correlation parameter $b$ over a substantial fraction of the available rapidity. Predictions are given for $pp$ collisions at LHC, $\sqrt{s}=14$TeV and $\sqrt{s}=5.5$TeV.
An attempt is made to summarize the discussion at the Workshop, except for the panel discussion on the ability of the LHC detectors to accommodate forward reactions. The Workshop focused on two main topics. The first topic was forward physics at the LHC. Predictions were made for forward reactions, including elastic scattering and soft diffractive processes, intopic was forward physics at the LHC. Predictions were made for forward reactions, including elastic scattering and soft diffractive processes, in terms of (multi) Pomeron exchange, using knowledge gained at lower energies. The survival …
We present the theoretical results on the forward Lambda_b production in pp collisions obtained within the soft QCD, namely the quark gluon string model, at LHC energies. It can give us useful information on the Regge trajectories of the bottom mesons.
The experimental data on net proton and net Lambda-hyperon spectra obtained by the NA35 Collaboration, as well as the inclusive densities of Lambda and bar-Lambda obtained by NA49, NA57, and STAR collaborations, are compared with the predictions of the Quark-Gluon String Model. The contributions of String Junction diffusion, interactions with nuclear clusters, and the inelastic screening corrections are accounted for. The level of numerical agreement of the calculations with the experimental data is of about 20-30%. The predictions for LHC are also presented.
We review the prospects for Central Exclusive Diffractive (CED) production of Higgs bosons in the SM with a fourth generation of fermions at the LHC using forward proton detectors installed at 220m and 420m distance around ATLAS and / or CMS. We discuss the determination of Higgs spin-parity and coupling structures at the LHC and show that the forward proton mode would provide a critical information on the CP properties of the Higgs bosons.
The prospects for central exclusive diffractive (CED) production of BSM Higgs bosons at the LHC are reviewed. This comprises the production of MSSM and 4th generation Higgs bosons. The sensitivity of the searches in the forward proton mode for the Higgs bosons as well as the possibility of a coupling structure determination are briefly discussed.
We present a new method to test the Standard Model expectations at the LHC using photon-induced $WW$ production. Both $W$ decay in the main ATLAS or CMS detectors while scattered protons are measured in forward detectors. The sensitivity to anomalous $WWγ$ triple gauge coupling can be improved by more than a factor 5 or 30 compared to the present LEP or Tevatron sensitivity respectively.
In this paper we explore the use of results on forward particle production at the LHC to constrain nuclear Parton Density Functions (nPDFs). The case study here is based on a possible future measurement of forward photon production with the Forward Calorimeter that is currently under discussion as an upgrade of the ALICE experiment. As a starting point, we use the recent nNNPDF 1.0 nuclear PDFs, which have been determined using fixed target neutral-current DIS data, which constrain the gluon density at x > $10^{-2}$. The Bayesian reweighting technique is used to include the constraints from th…
At the LHC, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out measurements of the transverse energy flow due to ``minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We discuss parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, and comment on the role of these observables to study high parton multiplicity effects.
The production of charmed and beauty baryons in proton-proton collisions at high energies is analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model. We present some predictions for the experiments on the forward beauty baryon production in pp collisions at LHC energies. This analysis allows us to find useful information on the Regge trajectories of the heavy (b barb) mesons and the sea beauty quark distributions in the proton.
We demonstrate that underlying assumptions concerning the structure of constituent parton Fock states in hadrons make a strong impact on the predictions of hadronic interaction models for forward hadron spectra and for long-range correlations between central and forward hadron production. Our analysis shows that combined studies of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider by central and forward-looking detectors have a rich potential for discriminating between the main model approaches.
For the energy of 14 TeV, to be reached at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we have had for some time accurate predictions for both the real and imaginary parts of the forward proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude. LHC is now scheduled to start operating in two years, and it is timely to discuss some of the important consequences of the measurements of both the total cross-section and the ratio of the real to the imaginary part. We stress the importance of measuring the real part of the proton-proton forward scattering amplitude at LHC, because a deviation from existing theoretical predic…
We provide a qualitative and quantitative unified picture of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production at hadron colliders in the SM and summarise the most recent experimental measurements.
Motivated by the recent work of Brzemiński, Motyka, Sadzikowski and Stebel in arXiv:1611.04449, where forward Drell--Yan production is studied in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, we improve their calculation by introducing an unintegrated gluon density obtained in arXiv:1209.1353 and arXiv:1301.5283 from a fit to combined HERA data at small values of Bjorken $x$. This gluon density was calculated within the BFKL formalism at next-to-leading order with collinear corrections. We show that it generates a good description of the forward Drell--Yan cross section dependence on the invariant mass…
We will recall the main feaatures of an accurate phenomenological model to describe successfully near-forward elastic scattering in a wide energy range, including ISR, SPS and Tevatron colliders. A large step in energy domain is accomplished with the LHC collider, presently running, giving the opportunity to confront the new data with the predictions of our theoretical approach.
I discuss a number of novel tests of QCD at the LHC, measurements which can illuminate fundamental features of hadron physics. I also review the "Principle of Maximum Conformality" (PMC) which systematically sets the renormalization scale order-by-order in pQCD, eliminating an unnecessary theoretical uncertainty. The PMC allows LHC experiments to test QCD much more precisely, and the sensitivity of LHC measurements to physics beyond the Standard Model is increased.
We show that exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production, pp -> p+H+p, followed by the H -> bbbar decay, could play an important role in identifying a `light' Higgs boson at the LHC, provided that the forward outgoing protons are tagged. We predict the cross sections for the signal and for all possible bbbar backgrounds.
We calculate several differential cross sections for Z0 and high-pT jet production in the forward rapidity region at the LHC using the hybrid High Energy Factorization. We test various unintegrated gluon distributions involving subleading BFKL effects (such as kinematic constraint, running strong coupling and DGLAP correction) and compare the results with experimental data obtained by the LHCb experiment. We find that the hard scale dependence of unintegrated gluon distributions, which effectively resums the Sudakov-type logarithms on the top of the resummation of the small x logarithms, is es…
Since recent RHIC data and the development of new theories for small x physics, a new interest appeared for forward physics. At LHC, a correct description of multiple parton interactions will be crucial to understand all the results. On the other hand, forward particle production and multiple interactions are the key points of air shower development. That's why air shower measurements done by precise experiments like KASCADE can help to understand high energy interactions, using hadronic models which are able to reproduce both accelerator and air shower data. In the framework of the EPOS model…
Two far-forward experimental systems are currently taking data during Run 3 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC): FASER + FASER$ν$ and SND@LHC. They are sensitive to some classes of beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) particles, muons and neutrinos produced in the ATLAS interaction point (IP) and propagating for several hundred meters along the tangent to the accelerator beamline, up to the caverns where they are respectively located, in opposite directions with respect to the IP. Proposals are being prepared to extend these experiments to bigger ones during the HL-LHC phase. Building a Forward Phys…
In the quasi-inert Higgs doublet model, we study the LHC diphoton rate for a standard model-like Higgs boson and the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at Tevatron. Taking into account the constraints from the vacuum stability, unitarity, electroweak precision tests, flavor physics and the related experimental data of top quark, we find that compared with the standard model prediction, the diphoton rate of Higgs boson at LHC can be enhanced due to the light charged Higgs contributions, while the measurement of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at Tevatron can be explained to within $1…
Forward Drell-Yan production at high energy can provide important constraints on gluon densities at small $x$, in the saturation regime. In this work we focus on the nuclear modification of this process, which could be measured at the LHC in the near future. For this we employ the color dipole approach, using the optical Glauber model to relate the dipole cross section of a nucleus to the one of a proton. Combining these results with our earlier results for forward $J/ψ$ production, we compute the ratio of the nuclear modification factors of these two processes. This observable was recently su…
The installation of forward proton detectors at the LHC will provide the possibility to observe central exclusive processes, opening a novel window on physics beyond the Standard Model. We review recent developments on the discovery potential from central exclusive light-by-light scattering. The search for this process is expected to provide bounds on a wide range of particles, and turns out to be complementary from new physics searches in inclusive channels.
The addition of forward proton detectors to LHC experiments will significantly enlarge the potential for studying New Physics. A topical example is Higgs production by the central exclusive diffractive process, pp -> p+H+p. We discuss the exclusive production of Higgs bosons in both the SM and MSSM. Special attention is paid to the backgrounds to the H -> bbbar signal.
The present work is devoted to study the high-energy $QCD$ events, such as the di-jet productions from proton-proton inelastic collisions at the $LHC$ in the forward-center and the forward-forward configurations, using the $unintegrated$ parton distribution functions ($UPDF$) in the $k_t$-factorization framework. The $UPDF$ of $Kimber$ et. al. ($KMR$) and $Martin$ et.al. ($MRW$) are generated in the leading order ($LO$) and next-to-leading order ($NLO$), using the $Harland-Lang$ et al. ($MMHT2014$) $PDF$ libraries. While working in the forward-center and the forward-forward rapidity sectors, o…
We introduce a numerical package FORward Experiment SEnsitivity Estimator, or FORESEE, that can be used to simulate the expected sensitivity reach of experiments placed in the far-forward direction from the proton-proton interaction point. The simulations can be performed for $14$ TeV collision energy characteristic for the LHC, as well as for larger energies: $27$ and $100$ TeV. In the package, a comprehensive list of validated forward spectra of various SM species is also provided. The capabilities of FORESEE are illustrated for the popular dark photon and dark Higgs boson models, as well as…
In this paper we investigate the hadron and photon production at forward rapidities in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions considering two phenomenological models based on the Color Glass Condensate formalism. The predictions of these models for the hadron spectra are compared with the dAu and pp RHIC data and the nuclear modification factor $R_{hA}$ is estimated. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of the transverse momentum dependence of this factor allows to discriminate between the phenomenological models. Furthermore, we predict $R_{hA}$ for photon production at forward rapidities at RHIC and …
We present predictions for charged hadron production and Lambda polarization in p-p and p-Pb collisions at the LHC using the saturation inspired DHJ model for the dipole cross section in the extended geometric scaling region.
We report on application of QCD in calculations of forward jet and W, Z boson production cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular in case of jet production we emphasize dynamical features of the matrix elements controlling the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in $\sqrt{s}/E_T$, where $E_T$ is the jet production transverse energy. In case of production of W, Z bosons we focus on angular correlations between produced boson and hardest associated jet.
In hydrodynamic approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions, hadrons with nonzero spin, produced out of the hydrodynamic medium, can acquire polarization via spin-vorticity thermodynamic coupling mechanism. The hydrodynamical quantity steering the polarization is the thermal vorticity, that is minus the antisymmetric part of the gradient of four-temperature field. Based on this mechanism there have been several calculations in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic models for non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan energy range, showing that the amount of polarization of pro…
