We report the first measurement of the differential cross section for the process gamma gamma --> eta eta in the kinematic range above the eta eta threshold, 1.096 GeV < W < 3.8 GeV over nearly the entire solid angle range, |cos theta*| <= 0.9 or <= 1.0 depending on W, where W and theta* are the energy and eta scattering angle, respectively, in the gamma gamma center-of-mass system. The results are based on a 393 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+ e^- collider. In the W range 1.1-2.0 GeV/c^2 we perform an analysis of resonance amplitudes for various partial waves, and at higher energy we compare the energy and the angular dependences of the cross section with predictions of theoretical models and extract contributions of the chi_{cJ} charmonia.
Measurements of double helicity asymmetries for inclusive hadron production in polarized proton-proton collisions are sensitive to spin-dependent parton distribution functions, in particular to the gluon distribution function. This study focuses on double helicity asymmetries in eta and charged pion production at mid-rapidity, as well as on the eta cross section and fragmentation functions.
We measure the branching fraction for the charmless semi-inclusive process B -> eta' X_s, where the eta' meson has a momentum in the range 2.0 to 2.7 GeV/c in the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass frame and X_s represents a system comprising a kaon and zero to four pions. We find B(B -> eta' X_s)=(3.9+/-0.8(stat)+/-0.5(syst)+/-0.8(model)).10^{-4}. We also obtain the X_s mass distribution and find that it tends to favor models predicting high masses.
The pseudoscalar meson eta_b has been searched for in two-photon interactions at LEP II. The data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 617 pb^{-1} at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 161 to 209 GeV. Upper limits at a confidence level of 95% on the product Gamma_{γγ}(eta_b) x BR(eta_b) are 190, 470 and 660 eV/c^2 for the eta_b decaying into 4, 6 and 8 charged particles, respectively.
The e+e- -> e+e- Ks K+- pi-+ e+e- -> e+e- eta pi+ pi- and final states are studied with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at centre-of-mass energies from 183 GeV up to 202 GeV. The mass spectrum of the Ks K+- pi-+ final state shows an enhancement around 1470MeV, which is identified with the pseudoscalar meson eta(1440). This state is observed in gamma gamma collisions for the first time and its two-photon width is measured to be Gamma_gamma gamma(eta(1440))x BR(eta(1440)->KK pi)= 212 +/- 50(stat) +/- 23(sys)eV. Clear evidence is also obtained for the formation of the axial vector mes…
Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we measure the eta' - gluon - gluon form-factor in Y(1S) decays. This form-factor especially at large eta' energies may provide an explanation of the large rate for B -> Xs eta'. Our data do not support a large anomalous coupling at higher q^2 and thus the large eta' rate remains a mystery, possibly requiring a non-Standard Model explanation.
We report on the observation of the eta_c^' (2 ^1S_0), the radial excitation of eta_c (1 ^1S_0) ground state of charmonium, in the two-photon fusion reaction gamma gamma to eta_c^' to K_S^0 K^{\pm} pi^{\mp} in 13.4 fb^{-1} of CLEO II/II.V data and 9.2 fb^{-1} of CLEO III data. The data have been analyzed to extract the eta_c^' resonance parameters.
We measure the inclusive branching fractions of charm mesons into three mesons with large s-anti-s content, namely the eta, eta' and phi. Data were accumulated with the CLEO-c detector. For D0 and D+ rates, we use 281/pb taken on the psi(3770) resonance, and for Ds+ rates, we use 195/pb taken at 4170 MeV. We find that the production rates of these particles are larger in Ds+ decays than in D0 and D+ decays. The phi rate, in particular, is 15 times greater. These branching fractions can be used to measure Bs yields either at the Upsilon(5S) resonance or at hadron colliders.
A search for the pseudoscalar meson eta_b is performed in two-photon interactions at LEP~2 with an integrated luminosity of 699 pb^-1 collected at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 181 GeV to 209 GeV. One candidate event is found in the six-charged-particle final state and none in the four-charged-particle final state, in agreement with the total expected background of about one event. Upper limits of Gamma_gammagamma(eta_b) * BR(eta_b -> 4 charged particles) < 48 eV Gamma_gammagamma(eta_b) * BR(eta_b -> 6 charged particles) < 132 eV are obtained at 95% confidence level, which correspond to 95…
We report a measurement of high-p_T inclusive pi^0, eta, and direct photon production in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV at midrapidity (0 < eta < 1). Photons from the decay pi^0 -> gamma gamma were detected in the Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The eta -> gamma gamma decay was also observed and constituted the first eta measurement by STAR. The first direct photon cross section measurement by STAR is also presented, the signal was extracted statistically by subtracting the pi^0, eta, and omega(782) decay backgr…
The production of eta pi - system at low mass by the pi- beam in the Coulomb field of Be nuclei was studied. The cross section of the reaction pi- Be --> eta pi- Be was compared to the experimental data on the decay eta --> pi+ pi- gamma and to the theoretical predictions.
Fermilab experiment E835 has studied reactions \bar{p}p -> pi0 pi0, pi0 eta, eta eta, pi0 eta' and eta eta' in the energy region of the chi_c0(1^3P_0) from 3340 MeV to 3470 MeV. Interference between resonant and continuum production is observed in the pi0 pi0 and eta eta channels, and the product of the input and output branching fractions is measured. Limits on resonant production are set for the pi0 eta and pi0 eta' channels. An indication of interference is observed in the eta eta' channel. The technique for extracting resonance parameters in an environment dominated by continuum production…
Measurements of double helicity asymmetries for inclusive hadron production in polarized proton-proton collisions are sensitive to spin-dependent parton distribution functions, in particular to the gluon distribution, Delta g. This study presents the double helicity asymmetry and the cross section for eta production. The cross section measurement yields valuable data for the extraction of the fragmentation functions, which are unknown at present but are a prerequisite for the extraction of the spin-dependent parton distribution functions.
The reactions pp -> pf (X0) ps, where X0 is observed decaying to eta etaprime and etaprime etaprime, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. This is the first time that these channels have been observed in central production and only the second time that the etaprime etaprime channel has been observed in any production mechanism. In the eta etaprime channel there is evidence for the f0(1500) and a peak at 1.95 GeV. The etaprime etaprime channel shows a peak at threshold which is compatible with having JPC = 2++ and spin projection JZ = 0.
We present results on the production of high transverse momentum pizero and eta mesons in pp and pBe interactions at 530 and 800 GeV/c. The data span the kinematic ranges: 1 < p_T < 10 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive pizero cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and to expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.
The low emittance and small momentum spread of the proton and deuteron beams of the Cooler Synchrotron COSY combined with the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detection system permit to study the creation of mesons in the nucleon-nucleon interaction down to the fraction of MeV with respect to the kinematical threshold. At such small excess energies, the ejectiles possess low relative momenta and are predominantly produced with the relative angular momentum equal to zero. Taking advantage of these conditions we have performed investigations aiming to determine the mechanism of the production…
We present results on the production of high transverse momentum pizero and eta mesons in pi-p and pi-Be interactions at 515 GeV/c. The data span the kinematic ranges 1 < p_T < 11 GeV/c in transverse momentum and -0.75 < y < 0.75 in rapidity. The inclusive pizero cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and to expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.
eta_c(2980) production in gamma-gamma interactions has been detected via its decays into K0_s K+/- pi-/+, K+ K- K+ K- and K+ K- pi+ pi- in the data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP1 and LEP2 energies. The two-photon radiative width averaged over all observed decay channels is Γ_{γγ} = 13.9 +/- 2.0 (stat.) +/- 1.4 (syst.) +/- 2.7 (BR) keV. No direct decay channel eta_c -> pi+ pi- pi+ pi- has been observed. An upper limit $Γ_{γγ}$ < 5.5 keV at 95% confidence level has been evaluated for this decay mode.
According to the quark model, the masses of eta and eta' mesons should be almost equal. However, the empirical values of these masses differ by more than the factor of two. Similarly, though the almost the same quark-antiquark content, the total cross section for the creation of these mesons close to the kinematical thresholds in the pp --> ppX reaction differs significantly. Using the COSY-11 detection setup we intend to determine whether this difference will also be so significant in the case of the production of these mesons in the proton-neutron scattering. Additionally, the comparison of …
A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and etaprime appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi0. The production properties of the eta and etaprime are not consistent with what is expected from double Pomeron exchange. In addition the production mechanism for the eta and etaprime is such that the production cross section are greatest when the azimuthal angle between the pT vectors of the two protons is 90 degrees.
Data are presented on the reaction J/psi--> p pbar eta using 7.8 million J/psi triggers collected by the BEjing Spectrometer (BES). A partial wave analysis is performed. A clear enhancement near the p eta(pbar eta) threshold is observed. It is fitted with a JP=1/2- resonance with mass $M= 1530\pm 10$ MeV and width $Γ= 95\pm 25$ MeV. In addition, there is a peak around 1650 MeV with JP=1/2- preferred also, fitted with $M =1647\pm 20$ MeV and $Γ= 145^{+80}_{-45}$ MeV. These two N* resonances are believed to be the two well established states, S11(1535) and S11(1650), respectively. It is the firs…
Total cross sections for the quasi-free pn --> pn eta reaction in the range from the kinematical threshold up to 20 MeV excess energy have been determined. At threshold they exceed corresponding cross sections for the pp --> pp eta reaction by a factor of about three in contrast to the factor of six established for higher excess energies. To large extent, the observed decrease of the ratio sigma(pn --> pn eta)/sigma(pp --> pp eta) towards threshold may be assigned to the different energy dependence of the proton-proton and proton-neutron final state interactions. The experiment has been conduc…
We present a search for tau sneutrino production using the Tevatron ppbar collision data collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb^-1. We focus on the scenarios predicted by the R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric models in which tau sneutrinos decay to two charged leptons of different flavor. With the data consistent with the standard model expectations, we set the upper limits on sigma(ppbar -> tau sneutrino)*BR(tau sneutrino ->emu,mutau,etau) and use these results to constrain the RPV couplings as a function of tau sneutrino mass.
We report on the observation of the eta_{c}^{prime}(2^{1}S_{0}), the radial excitation of eta_{c}(1^{1}S_{0}) ground state of charmonium, in the two-photon fusion reaction gamma gamma rightarrow eta_{c}^{prime} rightarrow K_{S}^{0}K^{pm}pi^{mp} in 13.6 fb^{-1} of CLEO II/II.V data and 13.1 fb^{-1} of CLEO III data. We obtain M(eta_{c}^{prime})=3642.9 pm 3.1(stat) pm1.5(syst) MeV, and M(eta_{c})=2981.8 pm1.3(stat) pm 1.5(syst) MeV. The corresponding values of hyperfine splittings between ^{1}S_{0} and ^{3}S_{1} states are ΔM_{hf}(1S)=115.1 pm 2.0 MeV, Delta M_{hf}(2S)=43.1 pm3.4 MeV. Assuming t…
A brief experimental overview on the close-to-threshold eta meson production in proton-proton interactions is presented and the available observables in measurements with unpolarized and polarized beam and target are discussed.
Measurements on the eta meson production in proton-deuteron collisions have been performed using the COSY-11 facility at COSY Juelich. Here we present preliminary results on total and differential cross sections for the pd --> 3He eta reaction at five excess energies between Q = 5.1 and Q = 40.6 MeV. The obtained angular distributions for the emitted eta mesons in the center of mass system expose a transition from an almost isotropic emission to a highly anisotropic distribution. The extracted total cross sections support a strong eta-3He final state interaction and will be compared with model…
The pseudorapidity distribution of charged hadrons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) =13 TeV is measured using a data sample obtained with the CMS detector, operated at zero magnetic field, at the CERN LHC. The yield of primary charged long-lived hadrons produced in inelastic pp collisions is determined in the central region of the CMS pixel detector (abs(eta)<2) using both hit pairs and reconstructed tracks. For central pseudorapidities (abs(eta)<0.5), the charged-hadron multiplicity density is dN/d(eta)[charged,abs(eta) < 0.5] = 5.49 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.17 (sys), a value obtained by combining th…
We present the results of recent work on the central exclusive production of meson pairs. We concentrate on the case of flavour-singlet pseudoscalar mesons eta, eta' and show that the central exclusive process, as modelled using a recent novel application of the 'hard exclusive' perturbative formalism, is potentially highly sensitive to the size of the gluon content of these states. We also discuss the exclusive production of meson pairs in the lower mass region, and present the first results of the new Dime Monte Carlo.
Preliminary results of recent measurements of the near threshold eta meson production in the dp-->dp eta reaction are presented. The experiment was performed at the COSY-Juelich accelerator with the use of the COSY-11 detection system. Data were taken for three values of deuteron beam momenta corresponding to excess energies of 3.2, 6.1 and 9.2 MeV. The energy dependence of the total cross section confirms a strong effect of the final state interaction.
Details of the analysis of the eta pi- system studied in the reaction pi^{-} p --> eta pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c are given. Separate analyses for the 2 gamma and pi+ pi- pi0 decay modes of the eta are presented. An amplitude analysis of the data indicates the presence of interference between the a(2)(1320)- and a J^{PC}=1^{-+} wave between 1.2 and 1.6 GeV/c^2. The phase difference between these waves shows phase motion not attributable solely to the a(2)(1320)-. The data can be fitted by interference between the a(2)(1320)- and an exotic 1^{-+} resonance with M = 1370 +-16 +50 -30} MeV/c^2 and Gamm…
Measurements of the analysing power for the p(pol)p --> ppeta reaction have been performed in the close-to-threshold energy region at beam momenta of p_{beam}=2.010 and 2.085 GeV/c, corresponding to excess energies of Q=10 and 36 MeV, respectively. The determined analysing power is essentially consistent with zero implying that the eta meson is produced predominantly in the s-wave at both excess energies. The angular dependence of the analysing power, combined with the hitherto determined isospin dependence of the total cross section for the eta meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, …
The inclusive production of the omega(782) vector meson in hadronic Z decays is measured and compared to model predictions. The analysis is based on 4 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1995. The production rate for x_p = p_meson/p_beam > 0.05 is measured in the omega -> pi^+ pi^- pi^0 decay mode and found to be 0.585 +- 0.019_stat +- 0.033_sys per event. Inclusive eta meson production is also measured in the same decay channel for x_p > 0.10, obtaining 0.355 +- 0.011_stat +- 0.024_sys per event. The branching ratio for omega -> mu^+ mu^- is investigated.…
One of the objectives of the vast physics programme of the recently comissioned WASA-at-COSY facility is the study of fundamental symmetries via the measurements of the eta and eta-prime mesons decays. Especially interesting are isospin violating hadronic precesses of these mesons into 3pi systems driven by the term of QCD Lagrangian which depends on the mass difference of the u and d quarks. When an eta or an eta-prime meson is created in the hadronic reaction signals from such decays may be significantly obscured by the prompt production of pi mesons. In this thesis we present the estimation…
Large transverse single-spin asymmetries, A_{N}, have been observed in forward hadron production at RHIC. STAR has reported precision measurements of the x_{F}-p_{T} dependence of A_{N} for forward pi^0 production. Contrary to expectation, the asymmetry does not fall with p_{T}. However, questions remain about the trend at the lower end of the studied range, p_{T}~1 GeV/c. Analysis of data from the 2008 RHIC run has extended the pi^0 data in the x_{F} > 0.4, low p_{T} region. Preliminary results are reported.
We present a measurement of the Pi0 transverse momentum spectrum and of the Eta/Pi0 ratio in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the CERN LHC. In this analysis the reconstruction of Pi0 and Eta mesons has been done via photon conversions in the central tracking system of ALICE. Therefore, this method is completely independent from the electromagnetic calorimeters. It makes the Pi0 (Eta) measurement possible down to pt = 0.4 (0.6) GeV/c with a very good resolution and a very small background. For 100 Mio. pp collisions the pt reach is 7 GeV/c. The results are compared to NLO pQCD cal…
Invariant cross sections for neutral pions and eta mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV were measured by the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations describe the pi0 and eta spectra at 0.9 TeV, but overestimate the measured cross sections at 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV. The measured eta/pi0 ratio is consistent with mT scaling at 2.76 TeV. At 7 TeV indications for a violation of mT scaling were found.
We present several recent results from the BaBar collaboration in the areas of initial state radiation physics and transition form factors. An updated study of the processes e+e- -> K+K-pi+pi- and e+e- -> K+K-pi0pi0 provides an improved understanding of the Y(2175) meson. A very precise study of the process e+e- -> pi+pi- improves the precision on the calculated anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and provides by far the best information on excited rho states. Our previous measurements of the timelike transition form factors (TFF) of the eta and eta' mesons at Q^2=112 GeV^2, combined with ne…
We report a measurement of the rate for $B \to η' X_s$ transitions where the $η'$ meson has center-of-mass momentum in the range 2.0 to 2.7\gevc and $X_s$ represents a system comprising a kaon and up to four pions. Our study is based on 22.2 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We find $\mathcal{B}(B \to η' X_s)=(6.8^{+0.7}_{-1.7}(stat)\pm1.0(syst)^{+0.0}_{-0.5}(bkg))\times10^{-4}$ assuming that the signal is due to $b \to sg^*$ transitions.
We report on the first measurement of J/Psi production as a function of charged particle pseudo-rapidity density dN_ch/d_eta in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. J/Psi mesons are detected down to p_T = 0 via their decays into e+e- pairs at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) and into mu+mu- pairs at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). dN_ch/d_eta is measured within |eta| < 1. We compare results in the two different J/Psi rapidity ranges. Preliminary PYTHIA simulations are also presented.
A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced eta pi0 and eta pi- channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. Clear a0(980) and a2(1320) signals have been observed in S and D+ waves respectively. The dPT, phi and |t| distributions of these resonances are presented.
Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV are presented, using data collected with the CMS detector over a broad range of pseudorapidity (eta) and azimuthal angle (phi). Short-range correlations in Delta(eta), which are studied in minimum bias events, are characterized using a simple "independent cluster" parametrization in order to quantify their strength (cluster size) and their extent in eta (cluster decay width). Long-range azimuthal correlations are studied differentially as a f…
The $η$ production in the $(n,n')$ bottomonium transitions $Υ(n) \to Υ(n') η, $ is studied in the method used before for dipion heavy quarkonia transitions. The widths $Γ_η(n,n')$ are calculated without fitting parameters for $n=2,3,4,5, n'=1$.Resulting $Γ_η(4,1)$ is found to be large in agreement with recent data.
Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (delta_eta) between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing BFKL dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large delta_eta in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1800 and 630 GeV using the DO detector. The partonic cross section increases strongly with the size of delta_eta. The observed growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of a_{BFKL}(20GeV)=1…
We present a new analysis of double charmonium production in e^+ e^- annihilation. The observation of the processes e^+ e^- -> J/psi eta_c, J/psi chi_c0, and J/psi eta_c(2S) is confirmed using a dataset more than three times larger than that of Belle's previous report, and no evidence for the process e^+ e^- -> J/psi J/psi is found. We perform an angular analysis for J/psi eta_c production and set an upper limit on the production of J/psi J/psi. Processes of the type e^+ e^- -> psi(2S) (cc)_res have been observed for the first time; their rates are found to be comparable to those of e^+ e^- ->…
Pseudorapidity gap distributions in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are studied using a minimum bias data sample with an integrated luminosity of 7.1 inverse microbarns. Cross sections are measured differentially in terms of Delta eta F, the larger of the pseudorapidity regions extending to the limits of the ATLAS sensitivity, at eta = +/- 4.9, in which no final state particles are produced above a transverse momentum threshold p_T Cut. The measurements span the region 0 < Delta eta F < 8 for 200 < p_T Cut < 800 MeV. At small Delta eta F, the data test the reliability of hadronisat…
Recent experimental results on charmonium $h_c(^1P_1)$, $η_c(1S)$ and $η_c(2S)$ from Belle, BaBar, CLEO and BESIII are reviewed. $h_c$ production and properties, the $η_c(1S)$ lineshape and the observation of $η_c(2S)$ in $ψ'$ decays are discussed.
We have searched for exclusive 2-photon production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV, using 532/pb of integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E_T > 5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.0, with no other particles detected in the event. Three candidate events are observed. We discuss the consistency of the three events with gamma-gamma, pi0-pi0, or eta-eta production. The probability that other processes fluctuate to 3 events or more is 1.7x10^-4. An upper limit …
Using the DZero detector at the 1.8 TeV pbarp Fermilab Tevatron collider, we have measured the inclusive dijet mass spectrum in the central pseudorapidity region |eta_jet| < 1.0 for dijet masses greater than 200 Gev/c^2. We have also measured the ratio of spectra sigma(|eta_jet| < 0.5)/sigma(0.5 < |eta_jet| < 1.0). The order alpha_s^3 QCD predictions are in good agreement with the data and we rule out models of quark compositeness with a contact interaction scale < 2.4 TeV at the 95% confidence level.
We proceed for the first time to the evaluation of the Born cross section for J/psi+eta(c) production, namely via g+g -> J/psi+eta(c)+g, and show that it has a harder P_T spectrum than the J/psi-pair yield at Born level. If one stuck to a comparison at Born level, one would conclude that J/psi+eta(c) production would surpass that of J/psi+J/psi at large P_T. This is nonetheless not the case since J/psi-pair production, as for single J/psi, receives leading-P_T contributions at higher orders in alpha_s. We also present the first evaluation of these leading-P_T next-to-leading order contribution…
The near-side ridge structure in the (Delta phi)-(Delta eta) correlation observed by the CMS Collaboration for pp collisions at 7 TeV at LHC can be explained by the momentum kick model in which the ridge particles are medium partons that suffer a collision with the jet and acquire a momentum kick along the jet direction. Similar to the early medium parton momentum distribution obtained in previous analysis for nucleus-nucleus collisions at 0.2 TeV, the early medium parton momentum distribution in pp collisions at 7 TeV exhibits a rapidity plateau as arising from particle production in a flux t…
The $η$ production in the $(n,n')$ bottomonium transitions $Υ(n) \to Υ(n') η, $ is studied in the method used before for dipion heavy quarkonia transitions. The widths $Γ_η(n,n')$ are calculated without fitting parameters for $n=2,3,4,5, n'=1$. Resulting $Γ_η(4,1)$ is found to be large in agreement with recent data. Multipole expansion method is shown to be inadequate for large size systems considered.
PHENIX and STAR data on the intercept parameter of the two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in sqrt(s_{NN}) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions are analyzed in terms of different models of hadronic multiplicities. To describe this combined PHENIX and STAR dataset, an in-medium eta' mass reduction of at least 200 MeV is needed, at the 99.9 % confidence level in the considered model class. Such a significant eta' mass modification may indicate the restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry in a hot and dense hadronic matter and the return of the 9th "prodigal" Goldstone boson.
The transverse energy ET in PbPb collisions at 2.76 TeV nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy sqrt(s[NN]) has been measured over a broad range of pseudorapidity eta and collision centrality using the CMS detector at the LHC. The transverse energy density per unit pseudorapidity d(ET)/d(eta) increases faster with collision energy than the charged particle multiplicity. This implies that the mean energy per particle is increasing with collision energy. At all pseudorapidities the transverse energy per participating nucleon increases with the centrality of the collision. The ratio of transverse e…
The STAR collaboration has previously reported a large transverse single spin asymmetry, A_N, for forward pi0 meson production. The cross-section in this region was measured up to Feynman-x (xF) of 0.55, and found to be consistent with perturbative Quantum Chromo-Dynamics predictions. During RHIC running in the year 2006 (6.8 inverse-pb, 56 % average polarization), an even larger A_N was observed for the eta meson at forward rapidity for xF > 0.5. All data were collected by the STAR Forward Pion Detector during sqrt(s) = 200 GeV polarized p+p collisions at RHIC. Understanding these large spin …
A systematic study of the factorization of long-range azimuthal two-particle correlations into a product of single-particle anisotropies is presented as a function of pt and eta of both particles, and as a function of the particle multiplicity in PbPb and pPb collisions. The data were taken with the CMS detector for PbPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV and pPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV, covering a very wide range of multiplicity. Factorization is observed to be broken as a function of both particle pt and eta. When measured with particles of different pt, the magnitude of the f…
The charged current (anti)neutrino induced eta production from the nucleons is studied in a model based on the effective Lagrangians to evaluate the contribution from the nonresonant and resonant diagrams. The contribution from the nonresonant background terms has been obtained using a microscopic model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangians. The contribution from the resonant diagrams due to the low lying $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11} (1650)$, and $P_{11} (1710)$ resonances has been evaluated using an effective phenomenological Lagrangian with its parameters determined from the experimental values o…
In view of the good agreement between the LHCb prompt-eta(c) data at sqrt(s)=7 and 8 TeV and the NLO colour-singlet model predictions --i.e. the leading v^2 NRQCD contribution--, we provide predictions in the LHCb acceptance for the forthcoming 13 TeV analysis bearing on data taken during the LHC Run2. We also provide predictions for sqrt(s)=115 GeV for proton-hydrogen collisions in the fixed-target mode which could be studied during the LHC Run3. Our predictions are complemented by a full theoretical uncertainty analysis. In addition to cross section predictions, we elaborate on the uncertain…
We review the present understanding of etaprime and eta meson physics and these mesons as a probe of gluon dynamics in low-energy QCD. Recent highlights include the production mechanism of eta and etaprime mesons in proton-nucleon collisions from threshold to high-energy, the etaprime effective mass shift in the nuclear medium, searches for possible eta and etaprime bound states in nuclei as well as precision measurements of eta decays as a probe of light-quark masses. We discuss recent experimental data, theoretical interpretation of the different measurements and the open questions and chall…
