The Exeter FCRAO CO Galactic Plane Survey consists of 12CO and 13CO (J=1-0) observations over the galactic plane covering 55 degrees <= l <= 102 degrees, |b| >= 1 degree and 141 degrees <= l <= 195 degrees, -3.5 degrees <= b <= 5.5 degrees with a spatial resolution of ~45" and a spectral resolution of ~0.15km/s. We will present the methodology of a threshold-based cloud and clump determination method which retains hierarchical information, then discuss associating sources with clouds in the catalogue. Once complete, this catalogue of clouds and clumps will encompass the majority of the Northern Galactic Plane, providing knowledge of the molecular structure of the galaxy and the starting point for studies of the variation in star formation efficiency. In addition, it will allow us to identify clouds that have no or little star formation taking place inside them, which are often overlooked in the study of the conditions required for star formation to take place.
The primary source of systematic uncertainty in the quest for the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) introduced by primordial gravitational waves is polarized thermal emission from Galactic dust. Therefore, accurate characterization and separation of the polarized thermal dust emission is an essential step in distinguishing such a faint CMB B-mode signal. We provide a modelling framework to simulate polarized thermal dust emission based on the model described in Ghosh et al. (2017), making use of both the Planck dust and Effelsberg-Bonn HI surveys over the northern Ga…
The UV-Excess Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane images a 10x185 degree wide band, centered on the Galactic Equator using the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope in four bands (U,g,r,HeI5875) down to ~21st-22nd magnitude (~20th in HeI5875). The setup and data reduction procedures are described. Simulations of the colours of main-sequence stars, giant, supergiants, DA and DB white dwarfs and AM CVn stars are made, including the effects of reddening. A first look at the data of the survey (currently 30% complete) is given.
We present a three dimensional map of extinction in the Northern Galactic Plane derived using photometry from the IPHAS survey. The map has fine angular ($\sim 10$ arcmin) and distance (100 pc) sampling allied to a significant depth ($\gtrsim 5$ kpc). We construct the map using a method based on a hierarchical Bayesian model as previously described by Sale (2012). In addition to mean extinction, we also measure differential extinction, which arises from the fractal nature of the ISM, and show that it will be the dominant source of uncertainty in estimates of extinction to some arbitrary positi…
In the quest to understand high-mass star formation, it is necessary to understand that from which the high-mass stars will form -- the dense molecular gas clouds and clumps. The Herschel infrared GALactic plane survey (Hi-GAL) is a comprehensive survey of thermal dust emission that can be used to characterize the properties and Galactic distribution of molecular gas. We have analyzed the survey maps within the Galactic longitude range $10^\circ < \ell < 56^\circ$ and have transformed these 2D maps into a 3D dense gas map of the Galactic plane using distance probability density functions. This…
The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) has observed the Galaxy at 4.76GHz with an angular resolution of $0.73^\circ$ full-width half-maximum, and detected Galactic synchrotron emission with high signal-to-noise ratio over the entire northern sky ($δ> -15^{\circ}$). We present the results of a spatial correlation analysis of Galactic foregrounds at mid-to-high ($b > 10^\circ$) Galactic latitudes using a preliminary version of the C-BASS intensity map. We jointly fit for synchrotron, dust, and free-free components between $20$ and $1000$GHz and look for differences in the Galactic synchrotron spectr…
There are several ongoing massive-star (mostly of spectral type O) surveys that are significantly increasing the quality and quantity of the spectroscopic information about these objects. Here we discuss and present results for two of them, GOSSS and NoMaDS. We also discuss recent and future developments on the Galactic O-Star Catalog and announce the upcoming availability of Marxist Ghost Buster, an IDL code that attacks spectral classification (hence the name) by using an interactive comparison with spectral libraries.
We present an updated three dimensional map of the Milky Way based on a sample of 2431 classical Cepheid variable stars, supplemented with about 200 newly detected classical Cepheids from the OGLE survey. The new objects were discovered as a result of a dedicated observing campaign of the ~280 square degree extension of the OGLE footprint of the Galactic disk during 2018-2019 observing seasons. These regions cover the main part of the northern Galactic warp that has been deficient in Cepheids so far. We use direct distances to the sample of over 2390 classical Cepheids to model the distributio…
We present a catalog of compact sources of radio emission at 1420 MHz in the northern Galactic plane from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey. The catalog contains 72,787 compact sources with angular size less than 3$'$ within the Galactic longitude range $52^{\circ} < \ell < 192^{\circ}$ down to a 5$σ$ detection level of $\sim$1.2 mJy. Linear polarization properties are included for 12,368 sources with signals greater than 4$σ_{QU}$ in the CGPS Stokes $Q$ and $U$ images at the position of the total intensity peak. We compare CGPS flux densities with cataloged flux densities in the Northern VLA…
We have conducted a large-scale survey of the northern plane using Kiso Wide Field Camera attached to Schmidt telescope at Kiso observatory. The KISOGP (KWFC Intensive Survey of the Galactic Plane) project have made 40-70 epoch observations in I band of about 320 sq. degrees for 5 years starting in 2012. The limiting magnitude is around 16.5 in I. In the data analysis so far, we detected a couple of thousands of variable stars including approximately 100 Cepheids and more than 700 Miras. Roughly 90 percent of them were not previously reported as variable stars, indicating that there are still …
The characteristics of the inner Galaxy remain obscured by significant dust extinction, and hence infrared surveys are useful to find young Cepheids whose distances and ages can be accurately determined. A near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic survey was carried out and three classical Cepheids were unveiled in the inner disk, around 20 and 30 degrees in Galactic longitude. The targets feature small Galactocentric distances, 3-5 kpc, and their velocities are important as they may be under the environmental influence of the Galactic bar. While one of the Cepheids has radial velocity consi…
We investigate how the properties of Galactic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and their denser substructures (clumps) correlate with the local star formation rate. We trace clouds using the $^{12}$CO(3-2) transition, as observed by the CO High Resolution Survey (COHRS). We identify their constituent clumps using thermal dust emission, as observed by the Herschel infrared GALactic plane survey (Hi-GAL). We estimate star formation rates in these clouds using 70 $μ$m emission. In total, we match 3,674 clumps to 473 clouds in position-position-velocity space spanning the Galactic longitude range $10…
We present the first detailed study of the behaviour of the stellar proper motion across the entire Galactic Anti-centre area visible in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. We use recalibrated SDSS astrometry in combination with positions from {\it Gaia} DR1 to provide tangential motion measurements with a systematic uncertainty $<$5 kms$^{-1}$ for the Main Sequence stars at the distance of the Monoceros Ring. We demonstrate that Monoceros members rotate around the Galaxy with azimuthal speeds of ~230 kms$^{-1}$, only slightly lower than that of the Sun. Additionally, both vertical and azimutha…
The HI halo clouds of the Milky Way, and in particular the intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs), are thought to be connected to Galactic fountain processes. Observations of fountain clouds are important for understanding the role of matter recycling and accretion onto the Galactic disk and subsequent star formation. Here, we quantify the amount of molecular gas in the Galactic halo. We focus on the rare class of molecular IVCs (MIVCs) and search for new objects. The HI-FIR correlation was studied across the entire northern and southern Galactic hemispheres at Galactic latitudes $|b|>20^\circ$ t…
We bring the two color maps for the plane component magnetic field of our Galaxy in coordinates of (R;l) and (DM;l). It was shown that magnetic field has reversals of the direction in neighbor spiral arms, in agreement with known models for the Galactic magnetic field. For the Sagittarius spiral arm region there is, however, some disagreement with standard magnetic field models. The major discrepancy is the fact that in the Sagittarius arm region the magnetic field in Southern hemisphere of the Galaxy, have opposite direction to the field of the Northern hemisphere. We think that the Sagittari…
The Orphan Stream is one of the most prominent tidal streams in the Galactic halo. Using data on red giants, RR Lyrae, and horizontal branch stars from Gaia and other surveys, we determine the proper motion of the Orphan Stream over a path of more than 90 degrees on the sky. We also provide updated tracks for the sky position, distance, and radial velocity of the stream. Our tracks in these latter dimensions mostly agree with previous results. However, there are significant corrections to the earlier distance and latitude tracks as the stream approaches the Galactic disk. Stream stars selected…
We present new results based on high-resolution observations of Sgr A West at the Galactic center with the VLA at 1.3 cm. We measured proper motions for 71 compact HII components. We also investigated radial velocities in the LSR velocity using the H92a line data. Combining proper motion and radial velocity measurements, we have determined the 3D velocity distribution in Sgr A West. We find that the three ionized streams (Northern Arm, Eastern Arm, and Western Arc) can be modeled with three bundles of Keplerian orbits around Sgr A*. We determined the five orbital parameters for each of them us…
The INT Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS) is the merger of the optical photometric surveys, IPHAS and UVEX, based on data from the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) obtained between 2003 and 2018. These capture the entire northern Galactic plane within the Galactic coordinate range, -5<b<+5 deg. and 30<l<215 deg. From the beginning, the incorporation of narrowband H-alpha imaging has been a unique and distinctive feature of this effort. Alongside a focused discussion of the nature and application of the H-alpha data, we present the IGAPS world-accessible database of images for all 5 survey filters, i, …
We present Grantecan 10 m telescope (GTC) spectroscopic confirmations of 55 faint Planetary Nebulae (PNe) candidates discovered largely in the INT Photometric H$_α$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) by our pro-am collaboration. We confirm 46 of them as 'True' (T), 4 as 'Likely' (L) and 5 as 'Possible' (P) PNe and including 5 new PNe central star (CSPN) discoveries. This was from observations of 62 new candidates yielding a maximum PN discovery success rate of 89%. The sensitivity and longer wavelength coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction and at …
We present a catalog of eclipsing binaries in the northern Galactic Plane from the Kiso Wide-Field Camera Intensive Survey of the Galactic Plane (KISOGP). We visually identified 7055 eclipsing binaries spread across $\sim$330 square degrees, including 4197 W Ursa Majoris/EW-, 1458 $β$ Lyrae/EB-, and 1400 Algol/EA-type eclipsing binaries. For all systems, $I$-band light curves were used to obtain accurate system parameters. We derived the distances and extinction values for the EW-type objects from their period--luminosity relation. We also obtained the structure of the thin disk from the distr…
We present the first installment of a massive spectroscopic survey of Galactic O stars, based on new, high signal-to-noise ratio, R~2500 digital observations from both hemispheres selected from the Galactic O-Star Catalog of Maíz Apellániz et al. (2004) and Sota et al. (2008). The spectral classification system is rediscussed and a new atlas is presented, which supersedes previous versions. Extensive sequences of exceptional objects are given, including types Ofc, ON/OC, Onfp, Of?p, Oe, and double-lined spectroscopic binaries. The remaining normal spectra bring this first sample to 184 stars, …
Following on from the second release of calibrated photometry from IPHAS, the INT/WFC Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane, we present incompleteness-corrected stellar density maps in the r and i photometric bands. These have been computed to a range of limiting magnitudes reaching to 20th magnitude in r and 19th in i (Vega system), and with different angular resolutions -- the highest resolution available being 1 square arcminute. The maps obtained cover 94 percent of the 1800 square-degree IPHAS footprint, spanning the Galactic latitude range, -5° < b < +5°, north of the…
We report H$α$ filter photometry for 197 northern hemisphere planetary nebulae (PNe) obtained using imaging data from the IPHAS survey. H$α$+[N II] fluxes were measured for 46 confirmed or possible PNe discovered by the IPHAS survey and for 151 previously catalogued PNe that fell within the area of the northern Galactic Plane surveyed by IPHAS. After correcting for [N II] emission admitted by the IPHAS H$α$ filter, the resulting H$α$ fluxes were combined with published radio free-free fluxes and H$β$ fluxes, in order to estimate mean optical extinctions to 143 PNe using ratios involving their …
The GALANTE optical photometric survey is observing the northern Galactic plane and some adjacent regions using seven narrow- and intermediate-filters, covering a total of 1618 square degrees. The survey has been designed with multiple exposure times and at least two different air masses per field to maximize its photometric dynamic range, comparable to that of Gaia, and ensure the accuracy of its photometric calibration. The goal is to reach at least 1% accuracy and precision in the seven bands for all stars brighter than AB magnitude 17 while detecting fainter stars with lower values of the …
Most massive stars reside in multiple systems that will interact over the course of their lifetime. Classical Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars represent the final end stages of stellar evolution at the upper-mass end. As part of a homogeneous, magnitude-limited ($V\leq12$) spectroscopic survey of northern Galactic WR stars, this paper aims to establish the observed and intrinsic multiplicity properties of the early-type nitrogen-rich WR population (WNE). We obtained high-resolution spectroscopic time series of the complete magnitude-limited sample of 16 WNE stars observable with the 1.2 m Mercator telesc…
The QUIJOTE-MFI Northern Hemisphere Wide-Survey has provided maps of the sky above declinations $-30^\circ$ at 11, 13, 17 and 19$\,$GHz. These data are combined with ancillary data to produce Spectral Energy Distributions in intensity in the frequency range 0.4--3\,000$\,$GHz on a sample of 52 candidate compact sources harbouring anomalous microwave emission (AME). We apply a component separation analysis at 1$^\circ$ scale on the full sample from which we identify 44 sources with high AME significance. We explore correlations between different fitted parameters on this last sample. QUIJOTE-MF…
We propose a method to determine the galactic constants R_0 (distance to the Galactic Center) and V_0 (rotation velocity of the Sun) from measurements of distances, radial velocities and proper motions of objects near the solar circle. This is a modification of the solar-circle method to a more practical observational method. We apply the method to determine R_0 using data from the literature with known distances and radial velocities, and obtain R_0 = 7.54 +/- 0.77 kpc.
Large-scale gaseous filaments with length up to the order of 100 pc are on the upper end of the filamentary hierarchy of the Galactic interstellar medium. Their association with respect to the Galactic structure and their role in Galactic star formation are of great interest from both observational and theoretical point of view. Previous "by-eye" searches, combined together, have started to uncover the Galactic distribution of large filaments, yet inherent bias and small sample size limit conclusive statistical results to be drawn. Here, we present (1) a new, automated method to identify large…
We discuss 94 Extended Green Objects (EGOs) in the northern Galactic plane cataloged by Cyganowski et al, based on near-infrared narrowband H2 (2.122 μm and continuum observations from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. This data set is three times larger than our previous study, and is unbiased by preselection. As discussed in the previous paper, the morphologies of the 4.5 μm emission generally resemble those of the near-infrared continuum, but are different from those of the H2 emission. Of our sample, only 28% of EGOs with H2 emission show similar morphologies between 4.5 μm and H2 emi…
Radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane can find and characterize HII regions, supernova remnants (SNRs), planetary nebulae (PNe), and extragalactic sources. A number of surveys at high angular resolution (<25") at different wavelengths exist to study the interstellar medium (ISM), but no comparable high-resolution and high-sensitivity survey exists at long radio wavelengths around 21cm. We observed a large fraction of the Galactic plane in the first quadrant of the Milky Way (l=14.0-67.4deg and |b| < 1.25deg) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in the C-configuration covering…
Here we statistically evaluate recent advances in determining the Sun-Galactic Center distance (Rsun) as well as recent measures of the orbital velocity around the Galactic Center (Vlsr), and the angular rotation parameters of various objects. Recent statistical results point to Rsun = 8.0 +- 0.2 kpc, Vlsr= 230 +- 3 km/s, and angular rotation at the Sun (ω) near 29 +- 1 km/s/kpc for the gas and stars at the Local Standard of Rest, and near 23 +- 2 km/s/kpc for the spiral pattern itself. This angular difference is similar to what had been predicted by density wave models, along with the observa…
We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of a complete sample of hard X-ray selected AGN in the Northern Galactic Cap of the 58-month Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) catalog, consisting of 100 AGN with b>50deg. This region has excellent potential for further study due to the availability of a wide range of archival multi-wavelength data, and we propose it as a low-redshift analog to the `deep fields' work on AGN at higher redshifts. We present distributions of luminosity, absorption, and other key quantities, from fitting new and archival X-ray data gathered from XMM-Newton, Swift…
We present a three dimensional velocity analysis of Milky Way disk kinematics using LAMOST K giant stars and the GPS1 proper motion catalogue. We find that Galactic disk stars near the anticenter direction (in the range of Galactocentric distance between $R=8$ and $13$ kpc and vertical position between $Z=-2$ and $2$ kpc) exhibit asymmetrical motions in the Galactocentric radial, azimuthal, and vertical components. Radial motions are not zero, thus departing from circularity in the orbits; they increase outwards within $R\lesssim 12$ kpc, show some oscillation in the northern ($0 < Z < 2$ kpc)…
New space missions, such as NASA TESS or ESA PLATO, will focus on bright stars, which have been largely ignored by modern large surveys, especially in the northern sky. Spectroscopic information is of paramount importance in characterising the stars and analysing planets possibly orbiting them, and in studying the Galactic disc evolution. The aim of this work was to analyse all bright (V < 8 mag) F, G, and K dwarf stars using high-resolution spectra in the selected sky fields near the northern celestial pole. The observations were carried out with the 1.65 m diameter telescope at the Molėtai A…
Rotation measure (RM) synthesis maps of NGC 4631 show remarkable sign reversals with distance from the minor axis in the northern halo of the galaxy on kpc scales. To explain this new phenomenon, we solve the dynamo equations under the assumption of scale invariance and search for rotating logarithmic spiral solutions. Solutions for velocity fields representing accretion onto the disk, outflow from the disk, and rotation-only in the disk are found that produce RM with reversing signs viewed edge-on. Model RM maps are created for a variety of input parameters using a Faraday screen and are scal…
Action-angle coordinates are an essential tool for understanding the properties of the six dimensional phase space involved in orbits of stars in galactic potentials. A new method, which does not require specific knowledge of a generating function, is described, implemented and tested that calculates the actions of an orbit in an arbitrary potential of an integrable Hamiltonian given a set of Cartesian phase space points. The method chooses between the simple harmonic oscillator and isochrone potentials to fit the data using a Levenberg-Marquardt routine. An average is taken over the angle coo…
We aim to understand the accretion history of the Milky Way by exploring the vertical and radial properties of the Galactic thick disc. We study the chemical and kinematic properties of roughly a thousand spectra of faint magnitude foreground Galactic stars observed serendipitously during extra-galactic surveys in four lines-of-sight: three in the southern Galactic hemisphere (surveys of the Carina, Fornax and Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxies) and one in the northern Galactic hemisphere (a survey of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy). The foreground stars span distances up to 3kpc from the…
We present new measurements of the centers for 65 Milky Way globular clusters. Centers were determined by fitting ellipses to the density distribution within the inner $2\arcmin$ of the cluster center, and averaging the centers of these ellipses. The symmetry of clusters was also analyzed by comparing cumulative radial distributions on opposite sides of the cluster across a grid of trial centers. All of the determinations were done with stellar positions derived from a combination of two single-orbit ACS images of the core of the cluster in $F606W$ and $F814W$. We find that the ellipse-fitting…
We have determined the Galactic rotation parameters and the solar Galactocentric distance R_0 by simultaneously solving Bottlinger's kinematic equations using data on masers with known line-of-sight velocities and highly accurate trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions measured by VLBI. Our sample includes 73 masers spanning the range of Galactocentric distances from 3 to 14 kpc. The solutions found are Omega_0 = 28.86 +/- 0.45 km/s/kpc, Omega'_0 = -3.96 +/- 0.09 km/s/kpc^2, Omega"_0 =0.790 +/- 0.027 km/s/kpc^3, and R_0=8.3 +/- 0.2 kpc.In this case, the linear rotation velocity at the sola…

NGC 6946, known as the Fireworks galaxy because of its high supernova rate and high star formation, is embedded in a very extended HI halo. Its northern spiral arm is well detached from the galactic main body. We found that this arm contains a large (~300 pc in size) Red Ellipse, named according to a strong contamination of the H-alpha emission line on its optical images. The ellipse is accompanied by a short parallel arc and a few others still smaller and less regular; a bright star cluster is seen inside these features. The complicated combination of arcs seems to be unique, it is only a bit…
We consider three samples of O- and B-type stars from the solar neighborhood 0.6--4 kpc for which we have taken the distances, line-of-sight velocities, and proper motions from published sources. The first sample contains 120 massive spectroscopic binaries. O stars with spectroscopic distances from Patriarchi et al. constitute the second sample. The third sample consists of 168 OB3 stars whose distances have been determined from interstellar calcium lines. The angular velocity of Galactic rotation at the solar distance $Ω_0,$ its two derivatives $Ω'_0$ and $Ω"_0,$ and the peculiar velocity com…
Gravitational interactions between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the stellar and dark matter halo of the Milky Way are expected to give rise to disequilibrium phenomena in the outer Milky Way. A local wake is predicted to trail the orbit of the LMC, while a large-scale over-density is predicted to exist across a large area of the northern Galactic hemisphere. Here we present the detection of both the local wake and Northern over-density (hereafter the "collective response") in an all-sky star map of the Galaxy based on 1301 stars at 60<R_gal<100 kpc. The location of the wake is in good …
The physical, chemical and kinetic characteristics of 12 northern infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are systematic studied using the $\rm ^{13}CO $ (1-0) and $\rm C^{18}O$ (1-0) lines, observed with the PMO 13.7 m radio telescope, the 1.1 mm Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) data and GLIMPSE Spitzer IRAC $\rm 8 \,μm$ data. The molecular lines emission and 1.1 mm continuum emission almost coincide in morphology for each IRDC and both are associated well with the IRDCs. 10 IRDCs present the filamentary structure and substructures. Totally, 41 IRDC cores are identified and a statistic research for …
After discovery of the Fermi bubbles, giant structures observed in radio to X-rays have been discussed as possi- ble evidence of past activities in the Galactic Center (GC). We report here on the analysis of Suzaku data pointing around the Loop I arc. The diffuse X-ray emission was well represented by the three-component model: (1) an unabsorbed thermal plasma with kT ~ 0.1 keV either from the Local Hot Bubble (LHB) and/or solar wind charge exchange (SWCX), (2) an absorbed thermal plasma regarded as a contribution from the Loop I and the Galactic halo (GH), and (3) an absorbed power-law compon…
Short millimeter observations of radio-loud AGN offer the opportunity to study the physics of their inner relativistic jets, from where the bulk millimeter emission is radiated. Millimeter jets are significantly less affected by Faraday rotation and depolarization than in radio. Also, the millimeter emission is dominated by the innermost jet regions, that are invisible in radio owing to synchrotron opacity. We present the first dual frequency simultaneous 86GHz and 229GHz polarimetric survey of all four Stokes parameters of a large sample of 211 radio loud active galactic nuclei, designed to b…
We present a sub-arcsecond cross-match of Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) against the INT Galactic Plane Surveys (IGAPS) and the United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The resulting cross-match of Galactic Plane Surveys (XGAPS) provides additional precise photometry ($U_{RGO}$, $g$, $r$, $i$, H$α$, $J$, $H$ and $K$) to the Gaia photometry. In building the catalogue, proper motions given in Gaia DR3 are wound back to match the epochs of the IGAPS constituent surveys (INT Photometric \ha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane, IPHAS, and the UV-Excess Survey of the northern Galactic plane, U…
Stellar kinematic groups are kinematical coherent groups of stars that might have a common origin. These groups are dispersed throughout the Galaxy over time by the tidal effects of both Galactic rotation and disc heating, although their chemical content remains unchanged. The aim of chemical tagging is to establish that the abundances of every element in the analysis are homogeneus among the members. We study the case of the Hyades Supercluster to compile a reliable list of members (FGK stars) based on our chemical tagging analysis. For a total of 61 stars from the Hyades Supercluster, stella…
The paper investigates the question of whether or not determinations of the distance between the Sun and the Galactic center R0 are affected by the so-called "bandwagon effect", leading to selection effects in published data that tend to be close to expected values, as was suggested by some authors. It is difficult to estimate numerically a systematic uncertainty in R0 due to the bandwagon effect; however, it is highly probable that, even if widely accepted values differ appreciably from the true value, the published results should eventually approach the true value despite the bandwagon effec…
Here we discuss impacts of distance determinations on the Galactic disk traced by relatively young objects. The Galactic disk, about 40 kpc in diameter, is a cross-road of studies on the methods of measuring distances, interstellar extinction, evolution of galaxies, and other subjects of interest in astronomy. A proper treatment of interstellar extinction is, for example, crucial for estimating distances to stars in the disk outside the small range of the solar neighborhood. We'll review the current status of relevant studies and discuss some new approaches to the extinction law. When the exti…
This paper presents the detailed abundances and r-process classifications of 126 newly identified metal-poor stars as part of an ongoing collaboration, the R-Process Alliance. The stars were identified as metal-poor candidates from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and were followed-up at high spectral resolution (R~31,500) with the 3.5~m telescope at Apache Point Observatory. The atmospheric parameters were determined spectroscopically from Fe I lines, taking into account <3D> non-LTE corrections and using differential abundances with respect to a set of standards. Of the 126 new stars, 1…
