We consider the Glauber dynamics for the Ising model with "+" boundary conditions, at zero temperature or at temperature which goes to zero with the system size (hence the quotation marks in the title). In dimension d=3 we prove that an initial domain of linear size L of "-" spins disappears within a time τ_+ which is at most L^2(\log L)^c and at least L^2/(c\log L), for some c>0. The proof of the upper bound proceeds via comparison with an auxiliary dynamics which mimics the motion by mean curvature that is expected to describe, on large time-scales, the evolution of the interface between "+" and "-" domains. The analysis of the auxiliary dynamics requires recent results on the fluctuations of the height function associated to dimer coverings of the infinite honeycomb lattice. Our result, apart from the spurious logarithmic factor, is the first rigorous confirmation of the expected behavior τ_+\simeq const\times L^2, conjectured on heuristic grounds. In dimension d=2, τ_+ can be shown to be of order L^2 without logarithmic corrections: the upper bound was proven in [Fontes, Schonmann, Sidoravicius, 2002] and here we provide the lower bound. For d=2, we also prove that the spectral gap of the generator behaves like c/L for L large, as conjectured in [Bodineau-Martinelli, 2002].
We study a large class of critical two-dimensional Ising models namely critical Z-invariant Ising models on periodic graphs, example of which are the classical square, triangular and honeycomb lattice at the critical temperature. Fisher introduced a correspondence between the Ising model and the dimer model on a decorated graph, thus setting dimer techniques as a powerful tool for understanding the Ising model. In this paper, we give a full description of the dimer model corresponding to the critical Z-invariant Ising model. We prove that the dimer characteristic polynomial is equal (up to a c…
The XOR-Ising model on a graph consists of random spin configurations on vertices of the graph obtained by taking the product at each vertex of the spins of two independent Ising models. In this paper, we explicitly relate loop configurations of the XOR-Ising model and those of a dimer model living on a decorated, bipartite version of the Ising graph. This result is proved for graphs embedded in compact surfaces of genus g. Using this fact, we then prove that XOR-Ising loops have the same law as level lines of the height function of this bipartite dimer model. At criticality, the height functi…
We study a large class of critical two-dimensional Ising models, namely critical Z-invariant Ising models. Fisher [Fis66] introduced a correspondence between the Ising model and the dimer model on a decorated graph, thus setting dimer techniques as a powerful tool for understanding the Ising model. In this paper, we give a full description of the dimer model corresponding to the critical Z-invariant Ising model, consisting of explicit expressions which only depend on the local geometry of the underlying isoradial graph. Our main result is an explicit local formula for the inverse Kasteleyn mat…
The Bozonisation identities of [Dub11] show that squared 2d-Ising order and disorder correlations are equal to +- the ratio of bipartite dimer partition functions. In this self-contained paper, we give another proof of these identities using the approach of [BdT14]. Our proof is more direct and allows to keep track of order and disorder in XOR-Ising configurations.
We study various mathematical aspects of discrete models on graphs, specifically the Dimer and the Ising models. We focus on proving gluing formulas for individual summands of the partition function. We also obtain partial results regarding conjectured limits realized by fermions in rational conformal field theories.
We define and study a recurrence relation in ${\mathbb Z}^3$, called the hexahedron recurrence, which is similar to the octahedron recurrence (Hirota bilinear difference equation) and cube recurrence (Miwa equation). Like these examples, solutions to the hexahedron recurrence are partition sums for edge configurations on a certain graph, and have a natural interpretation in terms of cluster algebras. We give an explicit correspondence between monomials in the Laurent expansions arising in the recurrence with certain double-dimer configurations of a graph. We compute limit shapes for the corres…
The $Z$-invariant Ising model (Baxter in Philos Trans R Soc Lond A Math Phys Eng Sci 289(1359):315--346, 1978) is defined on an isoradial graph and has coupling constants depending on an elliptic parameter $k$. When $k=0$ the model is critical, and as $k$ varies the whole range of temperatures is covered. In this paper we study the corresponding dimer model on the Fisher graph, thus extending our papers (Boutillier and de Tili{è}re in Probab Theory Relat Fields 147:379--413, 2010; Commun Math Phys 301(2):473--516, 2011) to the full $Z$-invariant case. One of our main results is an explicit, lo…
After having introduced the notion of universality in statistical mechanics and its importance for our comprehension of the macroscopic behavior of interacting systems, I review recent progress in the understanding of the scaling limit of lattice critical models, including a quantitative characterization of the limiting distribution and the robustness of the limit under perturbations of the microscopic Hamiltonian. Specifically, I focus on two classes of non-exactly-solvable two-dimensional systems: non-planar Ising models and interacting dimers. In both settings, I describe the conjectures on…
In planar lattice statistical mechanics models like coupled Ising with quartic interactions, vertex and dimer models, the exponents depend on all the Hamiltonian details. This corresponds, in the Renormalization Group language, to a line of fixed points. A form of universality is expected to hold, implying that all the exponents can be expressed by exact "Kadanoff" relations in terms of a single one of them. This conjecture has been recently established and we review here the key step of the proof, obtained by rigorous Renormalization Group methods and valid irrespectively on the solvability o…
Fisher established an explicit correspondence between the 2-dimensional Ising model defined on a graph $G$ and the dimer model defined on a decorated version $\GD$ of this graph \cite{Fisher}. In this paper we explicitly relate the dimer model associated to the critical Ising model and critical cycle rooted spanning forests (CRSFs). This relation is established through characteristic polynomials, whose definition only depends on the respective fundamental domains, and which encode the combinatorics of the model. We first show a matrix-tree type theorem establishing that the dimer characteristi…
We study the dimer and Ising models on a finite planar weighted graph with periodic-antiperiodic boundary conditions, i.e. a graph $Γ$ in the Klein bottle $K$. Let $Γ_{mn}$ denote the graph obtained by pasting $m$ rows and $n$ columns of copies of $Γ$, which embeds in $K$ for $n$ odd and in the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ for $n$ even. We compute the dimer partition function $Z_{mn}$ of $Γ_{mn}$ for $n$ odd, in terms of the well-known characteristic polynomial $P$ of $Γ_{12}\subset\mathbb{T}^2$ together with a new characteristic polynomial $R$ of $Γ\subset K$. Using this result together with work of …
In this paper we determine the interaction of diagonal defect clusters in regions of an Aztec rectangle that scale to arbitrary points on its symmetry axis (in earlier work we treated the case when this point was the center of the scaled Aztec rectangle). We use the resulting formulas to determine the asymptotics of the correlation of defects that are macroscopically separated from one another and feel the influence of the boundary. In several of the treated situations this seems not to be accomplishable by previous methods. Our applications include the case of two long neutral strings, which …
A periodic Ising model is one endowed with interactions that are invariant under translations of members of a full-rank sublattice $\mathfrak{L}$ of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We give an exact, quantitative description of the critical temperature, defined by the supreme of the temperatures at which the spontaneous magnetization of a periodic, Ising ferromagnets is nonzero, as the solution of a certain algebraic equation, namely, the condition that the spectral curve of the corresponding dimer model on the Fisher graph has a real node on the unit torus. A simple proof for the exponential decay of spin-spi…
We summarize how to obtain rough bounds for one version of the emptiness formation probability in the 2d dimer model. The methods we use are the same as have been developed to obtain EFP bounds in the 1d XXZ model in a paper with Crawford, Ng and one of the authors. A main tool is reflection positivity for the basic dimer model, as proved by Heilmann and Lieb. We also state the corollary for a 1d quantum spin system which Suzuki showed is related to the 2d Ising model.
The Pfaffian structure of the boundary monomer correlation functions in the dimer-covering planar graph models is rederived through a combinatorial / topological argument. These functions are then extended into a larger family of order-disorder correlation functions which are shown to exhibit Pfaffian structure throughout the bulk. Key tools involve combinatorial switching symmetries which are identified through the loop-gas representation of the double dimer model, and topological implications of planarity.
We introduce the framework of discrete holomorphic functions on t-embeddings of weighted bipartite planar graphs; t-embeddings also appeared under the name Coulomb gauges in a recent paper arXiv:1810.05616. We argue that this framework is particularly relevant for the analysis of scaling limits of the height fluctuations in the corresponding dimer models. In particular, it unifies both Kenyon's interpretation of dimer observables as derivatives of harmonic functions on T-graphs and the notion of s-holomorphic functions originated in Smirnov's work on the critical Ising model. We develop an a p…
The dimer problem arose in a thermodynamic study of diatomic molecules, and was abstracted into one of the most basic and natural problems in both statistical mechanics and combinatoric mathematics. Given a rectangular lattice of volume V in d dimensions, the dimer problem loosely speaking is to count the number of different ways dimers (dominoes) may be layed down on the lattice to completely cover it. It is known that the number of such coverings is roughly exp(lambda_d V) for some number lambda_d. The first terms in the expansion of lambda_d have been known for about thirty years lambda_d ~…
We establish a correspondence between the dimer model on a bipartite graph and a circle pattern with the combinatorics of that graph, which holds for graphs that are either planar or embedded on the torus. The set of positive face weights on the graph gives a set of global coordinates on the space of circle patterns with embedded dual. Under this correspondence, which extends the previously known isoradial case, the urban renewal (local move for dimer models) is equivalent to the Miquel move (local move for circle patterns). As a consequence the Miquel dynamics on circle patterns is governed b…
We consider a class of Ising spin systems on a set Λof sites. The sites are grouped into units with the property that each site belongs to either one or two units, and the total internal energy of the system is the sum of the energies of the individual units, which in turn depend only on the number of up spins in the unit. We show that under suitable conditions on these interactions none of the |Λ| Lee-Yang zeros in the complex z = exp{2βh} plane, where βis the inverse temperature and h the uniform magnetic field, touch the positive real axis, at least for large values of β. In some cases one …
