We present the results of a multi-component synthetic spectral analysis of the archival far ultraviolet spectra of several key nova-like variables including members of the SW Sex, RW Tri, UX UMa and VY Scl subclasses: KR Aur, RW Tri, V825 Her, V795 Her, BP Lyn, V425 Cas and HL Aqr. Accretion rates as well as the possible flux contribution of the accreting white dwarf are included in our analysis. Except for RW Tri which has a reliable trigonometric parallax, we computed the distances to the nova-like systems using the method of Knigge (2006). Our analysis of seven archival IUE spectra of RW Tri at its parallax distance of 341 pc consistently indicates a low mass (0.4Msun) white dwarf and an average accretion rate, 6.3 E-9Msun/yr. For KR Aur, we estimate that the white dwarf has Teff=29,000K, log g = 8.4 and contributes 18% of the FUV flux while an accretion disk with accretion rate of 3 E-10Msun/yr at an inclination of 41 degrees, contributes the remainder. We find that an accretion disk dominates the far UV spectrum of V425 Cas but a white dwarf contributes non-negligibly with approximately 18% of the FUV flux. For the two high state nova-likes, HL Aqr and V825 Her, their accretion disks totally dominate with 1 E-9Msun/yr and 3 E-9Msun/yr, respectively. For BP Lyn we find an accretion rate of 1 E-8Msun/yr while for V795 Her, we find an accretion rate of 1 E-10Msun/yr. We discuss the implications of our results for the evolutionary status of nova-like variables.
Q Cygni (Nova Cygni 1876) is the third oldest old novae (after WY Sge and V841 Oph) with a long orbital period of 10.08 hours and spectroscopic peculiarities in the optical including the presence of variable wind outflow revealed by optical P Cygni profiles in the HeI lines and H alpha beta (Kafka et al. 2003). We have carried out a synthetic spectral analysis of a far ultraviolet IUE archival spectrum of Q Cygni using our optically thick, steady state, accretion disk models and model white dwarf photospheres. We find that the accretion light of a luminous accretion disk dominates the FUV flux…
We present the results of a synthetic spectral analysis of the far ultraviolet archival IUE, HST and FUSE observations of the fast old nova V603 Aql, obtained some 90 years after its 1918 nova outburst. Our analysis utilizes the new Hubble FGS parallax distance for this nearly face-on old nova, a high white dwarf mass and a low reddening. Our analysis includes non-truncated optically thick accretion disks since V603 Aql is neither a polar nor an intermediate polar. Our synthetic spectral modeling of the FUSE and HST spectra analyzed separately indicate a mass transfer rate of 1.5-2.2xe-9 solar…
We have selected three nova-like variables at the long period extreme of nova-like orbital periods: V363 Aur, RZ Gru and AC Cnc, all with IUE archival far ultraviolet spectra. All are UX UMa type nova-like variables and all have $P_{orb} > 7$h. V363 Aur is a bona fide SW Sex star, and AC Cnc is a probable one, while RZ Gru has not proven to be a member of the SW Sex subclass. We have carried out the first synthetic spectral analysis of far ultraviolet spectra of the three systems using state-of-the-art models both of accretion disks and white dwarf photospheres. We find that the FUV spectral e…
We study the evolution of the normalized flux of selected ultraviolet emission lines of three classical novae (PW Vul, V1668 Cyg and V1974 Cyg). Different phases ofthe outbursts are studied. We attribute the spectral behavior of the three systems to the variation of the optical thickness and temperature of the envelope during the different phases of the outbursts. Our results are consistent with the theoretical models of classical novae. We also present optical photometric observations of the three systems in the post-novae phase. These observations show the variation of the light curves of th…
New optical spectra obtained with the SMARTS 1.5m telescope and archival IUE far-ultraviolet spectra of the nova-like variable KQ Mon are discussed. The optical spectra reveal Balmer lines in absorption as well as He I absorption superposed on a blue continuum. The 2011 optical spectrum is similar to the KPNO 2.1m IIDS spectrum we obtained 33 years earlier, except that the Balmer and He I absorption is stronger in 2011. Far-ultraviolet IUE spectra reveal deep absorption lines due to C II, Si III, Si IV, C IV, and He II, but no P Cygni profiles indicative of wind outflow. We present the results…
The old novae V533 Her (Nova Her 1963), DI Lac (Nova Lac 1910) and RR Pic (Nova Pic 1891) are in (or near) their quiescent stage following their nova explosions and continue to accrete at a high rate in the aftermath of their explosions. They exhibit continua that are steeply rising into the FUV as well as absorption lines and emission lines of uncertain origin. All three have FUSE spectra which offer not only higher spectral resolution but also wavelength coverage extending down to the Lyman Limit. For DI Lac, we have matched these FUSE spectra with existing archival IUE spectral coverage to …
V445 Puppis is the only helium nova observed to date; its eruption in late 2000 showed high velocities up to 8500 km/s and a remarkable bipolar morphology cinched by an equatorial dust disc. Here we present multi-frequency radio observations of V445 Pup obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) spanning 1.5 to 43.3 GHz, and between 2001 January and 2008 March (days 89 to 2700 after eruption). The radio light curve is dominated by synchrotron emission over these seven years, and shows four distinct radio flares. Resolved radio images obtained in the VLA A configuration show that the synchrotron …
With six recorded nova outbursts, the prototypical recurrent nova T Pyxidis is the ideal cataclysmic variable system to assess the net change of the white dwarf mass within a nova cycle. Recent estimates of the mass ejected in the 2011 outburst ranged from a few 1.E-5 sollar mass to 3.3E-4 sollar mass, and assuming a mass accretion rate of 1.E-8 to 1.E-7 Sollar mass/yr for 44yrs, it has been concluded that the white dwaf in T Pyx is actually losing mass. Using NLTE disk modeling spectra to fit our recently obtained Hubble Space Telescope (HST) COS and STIS spectra, we find a mass accretion rat…
ER Ursae Majoris is the prototype for a subset of SU UMa-type dwarf novae characterized by short cycle times between outburst, high outburst frequency, and ``negative'' superhumps. It suffers superoutbursts every 43 days, lasting 20 days, normal outbursts every 4 days and has an outburst amplitude of 3 magnitudes. We have carried out a far ultraviolet (FUV) spectral analysis of ER UMa in quiescence, by fitting Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra with model accretion disks and high gravity photosphere models. Using the Gaia parallax…
We present an analysis of the FUSE spectra of eight high-declination dwarf novae obtained from a Cycle 7 FUSE survey. These DN systems have not been previously studied in the UV and little is known about their white dwarfs (WDs) or accretion disks. We carry out the spectral analysis of the FUSE data using synthetic spectra generated with the codes TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. For two faint objects (AQ Men, V433 Ara) we can only assess a lower limit for the WD temperature or mass accretion rate. NSV 10934 was caught in a quiescent state and its spectrum is consistent with a low mass accretion rate disk.…
We present a spectral analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectrum of the southern VY Scl nova-like variable BB Doradus, obtained as part of a Cycle 20 {\it HST/COS} survey of accreting white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables. BB Dor was observed with {\it COS} during an intermediate state with a low mass accretion rate, thereby allowing an estimate of the white dwarf temperature. The results of our spectral analysis show that the white dwarf is a significant far ultraviolet component with a temperature of $\sim$35,000-$\sim$50,000$~$K, assuming a $0.80~M_{\odot}$ …
The standard disk is often inadequate to model disk-dominated cataclysmic variables (CVs) and generates a spectrum that is bluer than the observed UV spectra [Puebla et al 2007]. X-ray observations of these systems reveal an optically thin boundary layer (BL) expected to appear as an inner hole in the disk. Consequently, we truncate the inner disk. However, instead of removing the inner disk, we impose the no-shear boundary condition at the truncation radius, thereby lowering the disk temperature and generating a spectrum that better fits the UV data. With our modified disk, we analyze the arc…
We present Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopy of the recurrent nova T Pyxidis obtained more than 5 years after its 2011 outburst indicating that the system might not have yet reached its deep quiescent state. The ultraviolet data exhibit a 20% decline in the continuum flux from the pre-outburst deep quiescence state to the post-outburst near quiescent state. We suggest that a decline across each recurring nova eruption might help explain the proposed 2mag steady decline of the system since 1866. Using an improved version of our accretion disk model as well as International Ultravi…
The spectra of disc-dominated cataclysmic variables (CVs) often deviate from the spectra of accretion disc models; in particular, the Balmer jump and absorption lines are found to be shallower in the observations than in the models. We carried out a combined ultraviolet-optical spectral analysis of two dwarf novae: UZ Ser in outburst, decline, and quiescence, and CY Lyr on the rise to outburst and in outburst. We fit the Balmer jump and absorption lines, the continuum flux level and slope by adjusting the accretion rate, inclination, and disc outer radius. For both systems we find an accretion…
We present a unified model of optical and ultraviolet (UV) light curves for one of the fastest classical novae, V838 Herculis (Nova Herculis 1991), and estimate its white dwarf (WD) mass. Based on an optically thick wind theory of nova outbursts, we model the optical light curves with free-free emission and the UV 1455 Ålight curves with blackbody emission. Our models of 1.35 \pm 0.02 M_\sun WD reproduce simultaneously the optical and UV 1455 Åobservations. The mass lost by the wind is ΔM_{wind} \sim 2 \times 10^{-6} M_\sun. We provide new determinations of the reddening, E(B-V) = 0.53 \pm 0.0…
The spectra arising from the disks of nova-like variables show many of the features seen in stellar atmospheres. They are typically modelled either from an appropriated weighted set of stellar atmospheres or a disk atmosphere with energy is dissipated near the disk plane, with the effective temperature distribution expected from a steady state accretion disk. However these models generally over-predict the depth of the Balmer jump and the slope of the spectrum in the ultraviolet. The problem is likely due to energy dissipation in the disk atmosphere, which produces a flatter vertical temperatu…
We present an analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) far ultraviolet snapshot spectrum of the dwarf nova BZ UMa taken during quiescence. We find that the flux continuum is consistent with that of a white dwarf atmosphere with a temperature of 15,000K, and a distance of about 156pc when assuming a white dwarf gravity of log(g)=7.5. We also show that the hydrogen quasi-molecular satellite lines opacity affects the spectrum around 1300-1400 A and has to be included to fine-tune the spectral modeling, this is self-consistent with the low stellar temp…
T Aurigae is an eclipsing old nova which exploded in 1891. At a Gaia EDR3 distance of 815-871 pc, it is a relatively nearby old nova. Through ultraviolet spectral modeling and using the new precise Gaia distance, we find that the HST/STIS spectrum of T Aurigae is consistent with an accretion disk with a mass transfer rate $\dot{M}$ of the order of $10^{-8}M_{\odot}$/yr, for a white dwarf mass of $M_{\rm wd} \approx 0.7 \pm 0.2 M_{\odot}$, an inclination of $i \sim 60^{\circ}$, and a Gaia distance of of $840_{-25}^{+31}$~pc. The sharp absorption lines of metals cannot form in the disk and are l…
Highly time-resolved time-tagged FUSE satellite spectroscopic data are analysed to establish the far-ultraviolet (FUV) absorption line characteristics of the nova-like cataclysmic variable binary, V3885 Sgr. We determine the temporal behaviour of low (Ly_beta, CIII, NIII) and high (SIV, PV, OVI) ion species, and highlight corresponding orbital phase modulated changes in these lines. On average the absorption troughs are blueshifted due to a low velocity disc wind outflow. Very rapid (~ 5 min) fluctuations in the absorption lines are isolated, which are indicative of stochastic density changes.…
We present a far ultraviolet spectroscopic analysis of the slowest known symbiotic nova AG Peg (M3/4III giant + hot white dwarf; P = 818.4 days) which underwent a nova explosion in 1850 followed by a very slow decline that did not end until 1996, marking the beginning of quiescence. The 19 years of quiescence ended in June 2015, when AG Peg exhibited a Z And-type outburst with an optical amplitude of 1.5 magnitudes. We have carried out accretion disk and WD photosphere synthetic spectral modeling of a Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectrum obtained on June 5.618, 2003 during th…
We investigate near-ultraviolet (NUV) variability in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc). This work was undertaken within the GC sub-project of the Transient UV Objects project, a programme which aims to find and study transient and strongly variable UV sources. Globular clusters are ideal targets for transient searches because of their high stellar densities and large populations of variable systems. Using all archival observations of 47 Tuc obtained with the UV/optical telescope (UVOT) aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory with the uvm2 filter, we searched for UV varia…
Spectra of 76 known dwarf novae from the LAMOST survey were presented. Most of the objects were observed in quiescence, and about 16 systems have typical outburst spectra. 36 of these systems were observed by SDSS, and most of their spectra are similar to the SDSS spectra. 2 objects, V367 Peg and V537 Peg, are the first to observe their spectra. The spectrum of V367 Peg shows a contribution from a M-type donor and its spectral type could be estimated as M3-5 by combining its orbital period. The signature of white dwarf spectrum can be seen clearly in four low-accretion-rate WZ Sge stars. Other…
Following the pulsation spectrum of a white dwarf through the heating and cooling involved in a dwarf nova outburst cycle provides a unique view of the changes to convective driving that take place on timescales of months versus millenia for non-accreting white dwarfs. In 2019 January the dwarf nova V386 Ser (one of a small number containing an accreting, pulsating white dwarf), underwent a large amplitude outburst. Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra were obtained 7 and 13 months after outburst along with optical ground-based photometry during this interval and high-speed photometry at…

The Andromeda Galaxy recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a has been caught in eruption nine times. Six observed eruptions in the seven years from 2008 to 2014 suggested a duty cycle of ~1 year, which makes this the most rapidly recurring system known and the leading single-degenerate Type Ia Supernova progenitor candidate; but no 2010 eruption has been found so far. Here we present evidence supporting the recovery of the 2010 eruption, based on archival images taken at and around the time. We detect the 2010 eruption in a pair of images at 2010 Nov 20.52 UT, with a magnitude of m_R = 17.84 +/- 0.19. Th…
NSV 1907, formerly listed as an irregular variable in variability catalogues, was classified as an Algol-type eclipsing binary in the Catalina Surveys Periodic Variable Star Catalogue. We have identified NSV 1907 as an ultraviolet (UV) bright source using measurements from the GALEX space telescope and detected obvious out-of-eclipse variability in archival photometric data from the Catalina Sky Survey, which instigated a closer examination of the object. A spectrum and extensive multicolour photometric observations were acquired, from which we deduce that NSV 1907 is a deeply eclipsing, nova-…
Chemical abundances studies of cataclysmic variables have revealed high nitrogen to carbon ratios in a number of of cataclysmic variable white dwarfs (based on ultraviolet emission and absorption lines), as well as possible carbon deficiency in many secondaries (based on the absence of infrared CO absorption lines). These indicate that the accreted material on the white dwarf surface and the donor itself might be contaminated with CNO processed material. To further understand the origin of this abundance anomaly, there is a need for further chemical abundance study. In the present work, we car…
The UV spectra of nova-like variables are dominated by emission from the accretion disk, modified by scattering in a wind emanating from the disk. Here we model the spectra of RW Tri and UX UMa, the only two eclipsing nova-likes which have been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in the far-ultraviolet, in an attempt to constrain the geometry and the ionization structure of their winds. Using our Monte Carlo radiative transfer code we computed spectra for simply-parameterized axisymmetric biconical outflow models and were able to find plausible models for both systems. These reproduce the…
We obtained Hubble STIS spectra of three nova-like variables: V751 Cygni, V380 Oph, and - the only confirmed nova-like variable known to be below the period gap - BK Lyn. In all three systems, the spectra were taken during high optical brightness state, and a luminous accretion disk dominates their far ultraviolet (FUV) light. We assessed a lower limit of the distances by applying the infrared photometric method of \citet{Knigge2006}. Within the limitations imposed by the poorly known system parameters (such as the inclination, white dwarf mass, and the applicability of steady state accretion …
Despite being bright ($V=12$) and nearby ($d=212$ pc) ASAS J071404+7004.3 has only recently been identified as a nova-like cataclysmic variable. We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the Isaac Newton Telescope together with $\textit{Swift}$ X-ray and ultraviolet observations. We combined these with $\textit{TESS}$ photometry and find a period of 3.28h and a mass transfer rate of $4-9 \times 10^{-9} M_{sun}/yr$. Historical photometry shows at least one low state establishing the system as a VY Scl star. Our high-cadence spectroscopy also revealed rapidly changing winds emana…
The majority of cataclysmic variables are predicted to be post-period minimum systems with degenerate donor stars, the period bouncers. Owing to their intrinsic faintness, however, only a handful of these systems have so far been securely identified. We want to study the X-ray properties of two eclipsing period bouncers, OV Bootis and SDSS J103533.02+055158.3, that were selected for this study due to their proximity to Earth. We have obtained XMM-Newton phase-resolved X-ray and ultraviolet observations of the two objects for spectral and timing analysis. Owing to a recent dwarf nova outburst O…
The 2008 discovery of an eruption of M31N 2008-12a began a journey on which the true nature of this remarkable recurrent nova continues to be revealed. M31N 2008-12a contains a white dwarf close to the Chandrasekhar limit, accreting at a high rate from its companion, and undergoes thermonuclear eruptions which are observed yearly and may even be twice as frequent. In this paper, we report on Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph ultraviolet spectroscopy taken within days of the predicted 2015 eruption, coupled with Keck spectroscopy of the 2013 eruption. Together, this sp…

GK Per, a classical nova of 1901, is thought to undergo variable mass accretion on to a magnetized white dwarf (WD) in an intermediate polar system (IP). We organized a multi-mission observational campaign in the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) energy ranges during its dwarf nova (DN) outburst in 2015 March-April. Comparing data from quiescence and near outburst, we have found that the maximum plasma temperature decreased from about 26 to 16.2+/-0.4 keV. This is consistent with the previously proposed scenario of increase in mass accretion rate while the inner radius of the magnetically disrupted a…
Four VY Scl-type nova-like systems were observed in X-rays during both the low and the high optical states. We examined Chandra, ROSAT, Swift and Suzaku archival observations of BZ Cam, MV Lyr, TT Ari, and V794 Aql. The X-ray flux of BZ Cam is higher during the low state, but there is no supersoft X-ray source (SSS) as hypothesized in previous articles. No SSS was detected in the low state of the any of the other systems, with the X-ray flux decreasing by a factor between 2 and 50. The best fit to the Swift X-ray spectra is obtained with a multi-component model of plasma in collisional ionizat…
We present a far-ultraviolet (FUV) study of the globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099). The images were obtained using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS/SBC, F150LP, FUV) and the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2, F300W, UV) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We compare the catalogue of FUV objects to ten known X-ray sources and find six confident matches of two cataclysmic variables (CVs), one RS CVn, one red giant with strong FUV emission and two sources only detected in the FUV. We also searched for variable sources in our dataset and found a total of seven blue stragglers (BSs), fou…
Recent Kepler photometry has revealed that about half of white dwarfs (WDs) have periodic, low-level (~ 1e-4 - 1e-3), optical variations. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet spectroscopy has shown that up to about one half of WDs are actively accreting rocky planetary debris, as evidenced by the presence of photospheric metal absorption lines. We have obtained HST ultraviolet spectra of seven WDs that have been monitored for periodic variations, to test the hypothesis that these two phenomena are causally connected, i.e. that the optical periodic modulation is caused by WD rotation couple…
