The effect of gain saturation in a gain compensated perfect lens

The transmission of evanescent waves in a gain-compensated perfect lens is discussed. In particular, the impact of gain saturation is included in the analysis, and a method for calculating the fields of such nonlinear systems is developed. Gain compensation clearly improves the resolution; however, a number of nonideal effects arise as a result of gain saturation. The resolution associated with the lens is strongly dependent on the saturation constant of the active medium.

Achieving Perfect Imaging beyond Passive and Active Obstacles by a Transformed Bilayer Lens

A bilayer lens is proposed based on transformation optics. It is shown that Pendry's perfect lens, perfect bilayer lens made of indefinite media, and the concept of compensated media are well unified under the scope of the proposed bilayer lens. Using this concept, we also demonstrate how one is able to achieve perfect imaging beyond passive objects or active sources which are present in front of the lens.

Kerr-lens Mode Locking Without Nonlinear Astigmatism

We demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode locked folded cavity using a planar (non-Brewster) Ti:sapphire crystal as a gain and Kerr medium, thus cancelling the nonlinear astigmatism caused by a Brewster cut Kerr medium. Our method uses a novel cavity folding in which the intra-cavity laser beam propagates in two perpendicular planes such that the astigmatism of one mirror is compensated by the other mirror, enabling the introduction of an astigmatic free, planar-cut gain medium. Spectral Characteristics of Ultrashort Pulses in Kerr-lens Mode-Locked Lasers

A number of factors that influence spectral position of the femtosecond pulse in a Kerr-lens modelocked Cr:LiSGaF laser have been identified: high-order dispersion, gain saturation, reabsorption from the ground state, and stimulated Raman scattering. Using the one-dimensional numerical model for the simulation of the laser cavity, the relative contributions of different factors have been compared. Perfect compensation of absorption in metamaterials for diffraction-unlimited imaging

To overcome the resolution limit of conventional optics, near field imaging techniques using a negative index flat lens (NIFL) have been previously developed that amplify the evanescent components of the incident field. Here, a technique is developed and demonstrated to compensate for losses in a non-ideal NIFL by determining the transfer function of the lens and subsequently applying the inverse to the unresolved raw image. The result is a compensated image with sub-diffraction-limited resolution.

Experimental Demonstration of a Spin-Wave Lens Designed with Machine Learning

We present the design and experimental realization of a device that acts like a spin-wave lens i.e., it focuses spin waves to a specified location. The structure of the lens does not resemble any conventional lens design, it is a nonintuitive pattern produced by a machine learning algorithm. Using conventional refraction-based optical lens, it is challenging to achieve both high-resolution imaging and long-working-distance condition. Construction of a polarization insensitive lens from a quasi-isotropic metamaterial slab

We propose to employ the quasiisotropic metamaterial (QIMM) slab to construct a polarization insensitive lens, in which both E- and H-polarized waves exhibit the same refocusing effect. Correcting thermal-emission-induced detector saturation in infrared reflection or transmission spectroscopy

We found that temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy measurements (i.e., reflectance or transmittance) using a Fourier-transform spectrometer can have substantial errors, especially for elevated sample temperatures and collection using an objective lens (e.g., using an infrared microscope).
