It is shown that the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos $N_j$ having masses in the range of $M_j \sim (100 - 1000)$ GeV and present in the TeV scale type I and inverse see-saw scenarios of neutrino mass generation, is unlikely to be observable in the currently operating and future planned accelerator experiments (including LHC) due to the existence of very strong constraints on the parameters and couplings responsible for the corresponding $|ΔL| = 2$ processes, $L$ being the total lepton charge. If the heavy Majorana neutrinos $N_j$ are observed and they are associated only with the type I or inverse see-saw mechanisms and no additional TeV scale "new physics", they will behave like Dirac fermions to a relatively high level of precision, being actually pseudo-Dirac particles. The observation of effects proving the Majorana nature of $N_j$ would imply that these heavy neutrinos have additional relatively strong couplings to the Standard Model particles (as, e.g. in the type III see-saw scenario), or that light neutrino masses compatible with the observations are generated by a mechanism other than see-saw (e.g., radiatively at one or two loop level) in which the heavy Majorana neutrinos $N_j$ are nevertheless involved.
We consider the possibility of several different mechanisms contributing to the $\betabeta$-decay amplitude in the general case of CP nonconservation: light Majorana neutrino exchange, heavy left-handed (LH) and heavy right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrino exchanges, lepton charge non-conserving couplings in SUSY theories with R-parity breaking. If the $\betabeta$-decay is induced by, e.g., two "non-interfering" mechanisms, one can determine $|η_i|^2$ and $|η_j|^2$, $η_i$ and $η_j$ being the two fundamental parameters characterising these mechanisms, from data on the half-lives of two nuclear iso…
Assuming 3-$ν$ mixing, massive Majorana neutrinos and neutrinoless double-beta (\betabeta-) decay generated only by the (V-A) charged current weak interaction via the exchange of the three Majorana neutrinos, we briefly review the predictions for the effective Majorana mass $\meff$ in \betabeta-decay and reanalyse the physics potential of future \betabeta-decay experiments to provide information on the type of neutrino mass spectrum, the absolute scale of neutrino masses, and Majorana CP-violation in the lepton sector. Using as input the most recent experimental results on neutrino oscillation…
We investigate the possibility to discriminate between different pairs of CP non-conserving mechanisms inducing the neutrinoless double beta $\betabeta$-decay by using data on $\betabeta$-decay half-lives of nuclei with largely different nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). The mechanisms studied are: light Majorana neutrino exchange, heavy left-handed (LH) and heavy right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrino exchanges, lepton charge non-conserving couplings in SUSY theories with R-parity breaking giving rise to the "dominant gluino exchange" and the "squark-neutrino" mechanisms. The nuclei considered are…
A brief overview is given of theoretical analyses with neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. Theoretical bounds on the ``observable'', <m>_betabeta, are presented. By using experimental bounds on <m>_betabeta, allowed regions are obtained on the m_l-cos{2theta_12} plane, where m_l stands for the lightest neutrino mass. It is shown that Majorana neutrinos can be excluded by combining possible results of future neutrinoless double beta decay and {}^3H beta decay experiments. A possibility to constrain one of two Majorana phases is discussed also.
The compelling experimental evidences for oscillations of solar, reactor, atmospheric and accelerator neutrinos imply the existence of 3-neutrino mixing in the weak charged lepton current. The current data on the 3-neutrino mixing parameters are summarised and the phenomenology of 3-$ν$ mixing is reviewed. The properties of massive Majorana neutrinos and of their various possible couplings are discussed in detail. Two models of neutrino mass generation with massive Majorana neutrinos - the type I see-saw and the Higgs triplet model, are briefly reviewed. The problem of determining the nature -…
Assuming four-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos, we study the implications of the neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems, of the results of the LSND experiment and of the constraints on neutrino oscillations, obtained in reactor and accelerator experiments, for the predictions of the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta (\betabeta-)decay, \meff. All 4-neutrino mass spectra compatible with the existing neutrino mass and oscillation data are considered. The general case of CP-nonconservation is investigated. We have also analyzed…
We apply the see-saw mechanism and an SO(10) model to neutrino masses and mixing in order to estimate the heavy Majorana masses. We discuss shortly the decay modes of heavy Majorana neutrinos and calculate their contribution to the lepton number violating processes μ\to eγ, τ\toμγand τ\to eγ.
In order to explain the recently reported result on the double beta decay $(0νββ)$ experiment, together with the earlier established data on LMA MSW solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, we generate the textures of the nearly degenerate as well as the inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices within the framework of the see-saw mechanism in a model independent way. The leptonic mixings are generated from the texture of the right- handed Majorana mass matrices while keeping the Dirac neutrino mass matrices in diagonal forms.
The singular see-saw mechanism is a variation of the see-saw mechanism whereby the right-chiral neutrino Majorana mass matrix is singular. Previous works employing the singular see-saw mechanism have assumed a vanishing left-chiral Majorana mass matrix. We study the neutrino spectrum obtained under a singular see-saw mechanism when the left-chiral neutrinos possess a non-zero Majorana mass matrix. We refer to this as the type-II singular see-saw mechanism. The resulting neutrino spectrum is found to be sensitive to the hierarchy of the Dirac and Majorana mass scales used and we explore the phe…
We investigate the see-saw mechanism for generally non-fine-tuned $n \times n$ mass matrices involving both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We specifically show that the number of naturally light neutrinos cannot exceed half of the dimension of the considered mass matrix. Furthermore, we determine a criterion for mass matrix textures leading to light Dirac neutrinos with the see-saw mechanism. Especially, we study $4 \times 4$ and $6 \times 6$ mass matrix textures and give some examples in order to highlight these types of textures. Next, we present a model scheme based on non-Abelian and discre…
The related issues of Majorana CP violation in the lepton sector and leptogenesis are investigated in detail in two rather generic supersymmetric models with type I see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation and A_4 flavour symmetry, which naturally lead at leading order to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. The neutrino sector in this class of models is described at leading order by just two real parameters and one phase. This leads, in particular, to significant low energy constraints on the Majorana phases α_{21} and α_{31} in the PMNS matrix, which play the role of leptogenesis CP violating…
We study the see-saw enhancement mechanism in presence of the right-handed phases of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the Majorana mass matrix. The enhancement condition given by Smirnov is modified. We point out that the see-saw enhancement could be obtained due to the right-handed phases even if the Majorana matrix is proportional to the unit matrix. We show a realistic Dirac mass matrix which causes the see-saw enhancement.
We consider the minimum extension of the SM denominated 2HDM-III, in which,it new coupling constants to the new Higgs field in the Lagrangian of Yukawa are added furtheremore a Majorana mass in generated via See-Saw mechanism SSM-I thus, the effective masses of the Dirac and Majorana neutrinos will be sensitive to te VEV of Higgs doublets and to the structure of the Yukawa constants. Then we consider the MSS-III,in which a $Z_{2}$ symmetry is imposed to Lagrangian 2HDM-III to attach a doublet to the particles of the SM, and the other doublet to the triplet of fermions included in this mechanis…
The presence of the triplet $Δ_{L}$ in left-right symmetric theories leads to type-II see-saw mechanism for the neutrino masses. In these models, assuming a normal mass hierarchy for the heavy Majorana neutrinos, we derive a lower bound on the mass of the lightest of heavy Majorana neutrino from the leptogenesis constraint. From this bound we establish a consistent picture for the hierarchy of heavy Majorana neutrinos in a class of left right symmetric models in which we identify the neutrino Dirac mass matrix with that of Fritzsch type charged lepton mass matrix. It is shown that these values…
We show how Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) can occur for Majorana neutrinos, without inducing LIV in the charged leptons via radiative corrections. Such ``electrophobic'' LIV is due to the Majorana nature of the LIV operator together with electric charge conservation. Being free from the strong constraints coming from the charged lepton sector, electrophobic LIV can in principle be as large as current neutrino experiments permit. On the other hand electrophobic LIV could be naturally small if it originates from LIV in some singlet ``right-handed neutrino'' sector, and is felt in the physic…

The see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation may enhance lepton mixing up to maximal even if the Dirac mass matrices of leptons have structure similar to that in the quark sector. Two sets of conditions for such an enhancement are found. The first one includes the see-saw generation of heavy Majorana masses for right-handed neutrinos and a universality of Yukawa couplings which can follow from the unification of neutrinos with new superheavy neutral leptons. The second set is related to lepton number symmetry of the Yukawa interactions in the Dirac basis of neutrinos. Models which realize…
Alternatives to the see-saw mechanism are explored in supersymmetric models with three right-handed or sterile neutrinos. Tree-level Yukawa couplings can be drastically suppressed in a natural way to give sub-eV Dirac neutrino masses. If, in addition, a B-L gauge symmetry broken at a large scale M_G is introduced, a wider range of possibilities opens up. The value of the right-handed neutrino mass M_R can be easily disentangled from that of M_G. Dirac and Majorana neutrino masses at the eV scale can be generated radiatively through the exchange of sneutrinos and neutralinos. Dirac masses m_D o…
We consider $ ν_μ \to ν_τ $ oscillations under the assumption that there is a see-saw type mixing of the light neutrinos with heavy Majorana particles. It is shown that the existing data, including the recent LEP data, do not exclude the possibility that the additional terms in the transition probability due to this mixing could be of the same order of magnitude as the usual oscillating term. Detail investigations of $ ν_μ \to ν_τ $ transitions in future CERN and Fermilab experiments could allow to get informations not only about the neutrino masses and mixing but also about the mixing of neut…

The scaling hypothesis postulates proportionality of two columns of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis. This Ansatz was shown to lead to an inverted hierarchy and U_{e3} = 0. We discuss theoretical and phenomenological properties of this hypothesis. We show that (i) the neutrino mass matrix with scaling follows as a consequence of a generalized mu-tau symmetry imposed on the type-I see-saw model; (ii) there exists a unique texture for the Dirac mass matrix m_D which leads to scaling for arbitrary Majorana matrix M_R in the context of the type-I see-saw mechanism; (iii) unlik…
In this paper, we derive the relationship between the weak basis invariants (WB) related to CP violation responsible for leptogenesis and CP violation relevant at low energy. We examine all the experimental viable cases of Frampton-Glashow and Yanagida (FGY) model, in order to construct the WB invariants in terms of left handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix elements, and thus finding the necessary and sufficient condition for CP conservation. Further for all the viable FGY texture zeros, we have shown the explicit dependence of WB invariants on Dirac type and Majorana type CP violating phases.…
A simple model of the Majorana neutrino with the see-saw mechanism is studied, assuming that two light neutrinos are the hot dark matters with equal mass of 2.4 eV in the cold plus hot dark matter model of cosmology. We find that the heavy neutrino, which is the see-saw partner with the remaining one light neutrino, can be the cold dark matter, if the light neutrino is exactly massless. This cold dark matter neutrino is allowed to have the mass of the wide range from 5.9 x 10^2 eV to 2.2 x 10^7 eV.
For the D=5 Majorana neutrino mass operator to have a see-saw ultraviolet completion that is viable up to the Planck scale, the see-saw scale is bounded above due to triviality limits on the see-saw couplings. For supersymmetric see-saw models, with realistic neutrino mass textures, we compare constraints on the see-saw scale from triviality bounds, with those arising from experimental limits on induced charged-lepton flavour violation, for both the CMSSM and for models with split supersymmetry.
A new lefthanded see-saw mechanism is constructed, implying both the smallness of active-neutrino masses and decoupling of heavy passive neutrinos, similarly to the situation in the case of conventional see-saw. But now, in place of the conventional righthanded neutrinos, the lefthanded sterile neutrinos play the role of heavy passive neutrinos, the righthanded neutrinos and righthanded sterile neutrinos being absent. In this case, the neutrino mass term is necessarily of pure Majorana type.
The LFV charged lepton decays mu to e + gamma, tau to e + gamma and tau to mu + gamma and thermal leptogenesis are analysed in the MSSM with see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation and soft SUSY breaking with universal boundary conditions. The case of hierarchical heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum, M_1 << M_2 << M_3, is investigated. Leptogenesis requires M_1 > 10^9 GeV. Considering the natural range of values of the heaviest right-handed Majorana neutrino mass, M_3 > 5*10^{13} GeV, and assuming that the soft SUSY breaking universal gaugino and/or scalar masses have values in the ran…
The most plausible see-saw explanation of the smallness of the neutrino masses is based on the assumption that total lepton number is violated at a large scale and neutrinos with definite masses are Majorana particles. In this review we consider in details difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrino mixing and possibilities of revealing Majorana nature of neutrinos with definite masses.
Radiative corrections to ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}\! \rightarrow {\rm W}^{+}{\rm W}^{-}$ from Majorana neutrinos are studied in the context of the see-saw mechanism. Focusing on the effects of the fourth generation neutrinos, we calculate W-pair form factors, the differential cross sections and the forward-backward asymmetries for the polarized electrons at one-loop level. The behaviour of the form factors at the threshold of Majorana particle pair productions is found to differ from that of Dirac particle pair productions. In the cross section for unpolarized electrons, the radiative correction…

In the light of recent discovery of nonzero $θ_{13}$, we have analyzed the Altarelli-Feruglio $A_4$ flavor symmetry model extended with additional flavon. The inclusion of the new field leads to the deviation from exact tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern in the context of type-I see-saw by producing a nonzero $θ_{13}$ consistent with the recent experimental results at the leading order. A sum rule for light neutrino masses is also obtained in this context. The set-up constraints the two Majorana phases involved in the lepton mixing matrix in terms of $A_4$ parameter space. We have shown tha…
We have studied the radiative corrections from the fourth generation leptons in the context of the see-saw mechanism. We have estimated numerically the differential cross section for the process (${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}\! \rightarrow {\rm W}^{+}{\rm W}^{-}$) at one-loop level, and found in the cross section the threshold behaviors for Majorana neutrino productions.
We consider the see-saw mechanism for hierarchical Dirac and Majorana neutrino mass matrices m_D and M_R, including the CP violating phases. Simple arguments about the structure of the neutrino mass matrix and the requirement of successful leptogenesis lead to the situation that one of the right-handed Majorana neutrinos is much heavier than the other two, which in turn display a rather mild hierarchy. It is investigated how for the neutrino mixing one small and two large angles are generated. The mixing matrix element |U_{e3}|^2 is larger than 10^{-3} and a characteristic ratio between the br…
We study a multi-localization model for charged leptons and neutrinos, including the possibility of a see-saw mechanism. This framework offers the opportunity to allow for realistic solutions in a consistent model without fine-tuning of parameters, even if quarks are also considered. Those solutions predict that the large Majorana mass eigenvalues for right-handed neutrinos are of the same order of magnitude, although this almost common mass can span a large range (bounded from above by $\sim 10^{12}{\rm GeV}$). The model also predicts Majorana masses between $\sim 10^{-2}{\rm eV}$ and $\sim 5…
We discuss constraints on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R of the SUSY see-saw model in the mSUGRA framework. The sensitivity of radiative lepton-flavor violating decays on M_R is compared with the reach in lepton-flavor violating channels at a future linear collider.
I introduce and sketch the main features of those see-saw models where a large atmospheric mixing can be achieved starting from nearly diagonal matrices for charged leptons, Dirac neutrinos and Majorana right-handed neutrinos. It turns out that these models can be realized in Grand Unified Theories and they are well compatible with the related phenomenology of fermion masses and mixings.

But now, in place of the conventional righthanded neutrinos, the lefthanded sterile neutrinos play the role of heavy passive neutrinos, the righthanded neutrinos and righthanded sterile neutrinos being absent. Here, the lefthanded sterile neutrinos are different from charge conjugates of conventional righthanded neutrinos because their lepton numbers differ. In this case, the neutrino …
Neutrino oscillations give clear evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses and lepton-flavor violation (LFV) in the neutrino sector. This provides strong motivation to search for signals of LFV also in the charged lepton sector, and to probe the SUSY see-saw mechanism. We compare the sensitivity of rare radiative decays on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R with the reach in slepton-pair production at a future linear collider.
The low-energy neutrino physics constraints on the TeV scale type I see-saw scenarios of neutrino mass generation are revisited. It is shown that lepton charge (L) violation, associated to the production and decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos N_{j} having masses in the range of M_j \sim (100 ÷1000) GeV and present in such scenarios, is hardly to be observed at ongoing and future particle accelerator experiments, LHC included, because of very strong constraints on the parameters and couplings responsible for the corresponding |ΔL| = 2 processes. If the heavy Majorana neutrinos N_j are observed …
We determine the nu_{R} Majorana mass matrix from the experimental data on neutrino oscillations in the framework of a see-saw SO(10) model, where we impose the condition (M^R)_{33} = 0 to avoid too large fine-tunings in the see-saw formula. We find a class of solutions with the two lowest neutrino masses almost degenerate and the scale of the matrix elements of M^R in the range 10^{11} -10^{12} GeV in agreement with Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry. We find also solutions with smaller neutrino masses, for which the scale of M_R depends on the solution to the "solar neutrino problem" and on th…
In this letter in the framework of a simple see-saw scenario with two (or three) quasi degenerate Majorana neutrinos we propose that one of these neutrinos can be very weakly coupled, yet there is a mechanism of the generation of the abundance of such "dark" neutrino in the early universe. The mechanism of production is due to oscillations between "dark" Majorana neutrino and one of the Majorana's which has relatively large Yukawa couplings ("bright" Majorana neutrino). The transition of "bright" Majorana into a "dark" one is nonadiabatic. We point out on the similarity with the Landau-Zener t…
Supersymmetric models with broken R-parity provide mechanisms that allow to generate Majorana neutrino masses and magnetic moments through virtual particle-sparticle loops. This constitutes an attractive alternative to the see-saw mechanism. In this paper we present a detailed calculation of the transition magnetic moments of a Majorana neutrino in gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking MSSM without R-parity. We base our analysis on the renormalization group evolution of the MSSM parameters, which are unified at the GUT scale.
The possibility of observing CP violation in the decays of Higgs particles into top-quark, W- and Z-boson pairs induced by heavy Majorana neutrinos is discussed. In the context of minimal "see-saw" models with interfamily mixings, we find that Majorana neutrinos may give rise to sizable CP-odd effects at the one-loop electroweak order. We present numerical estimates of typical CP-odd observables that might be triggered at high-energy e+e- colliders.
We analyze the possibility of $CP$ violation induced by heavy Majorana neutrinos in the decays of the Higgs particle into top-quark, $W$- and $Z$-boson pairs. In the framework of various ``see-saw" models with interfamily mixings, we find that Majorana neutrinos may give rise to sizable $CP$-odd observables at the one-loop electroweak order. Numerical estimates of these $CP$-violating effects that may be detected in high-energy colliders are presented.
We consider neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double beta decay in a five dimensional standard model with warped geometry. Although the see-saw mechanism in its simplest form cannot be implemented because of the warped geometry, the bulk standard model neutrinos can acquire the desired (Majorana) masses from dimension five interactions. We discuss how large mixings can arise, why the large mixing angle MSW solution for solar neutrinos is favored, and provide estimates for the mixing angle U_e3. Implications for neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.
We obtain a 3+2 neutrino spectrum within a left-right symmetric framework by invoking a singular double see-saw mechanism. Higgs doublets are employed to break $SU_{R}(2)$ and three additional fermions, singlets under the left-right symmetric gauge group, are included. The introduction of a singularity into the singlet fermion Majorana mass matrix results in a light neutrino sector of three neutrinos containing predominantly $ν_{αL}$, $α=e,μ,τ$, separated from two neutrinos containing a small $ν_{αL}$ component. The resulting active-sterile mixing in the $5\times 5$ mixing matrix is specified …
The neutrino oscillations are studied in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model with Type-III see-saw mechanism by additionally introducing a number of SO(10) singlet neutrinos. The light Majorana neutrino mass matrix is given by a combination of those of the singlet neutrinos and the $SU(2)_L$ active neutrinos. The minimal SO(10) model gives an unambiguous Dirac neutrino mass matrix, which enables us to predict the masses and the other parameters for the singlet neutrinos. These predicted masses take the values accessible and testable by near future collider experiments unde…
We study the see-saw realization of seven textures of the neutrino mass matrix, which were presented by Frampton, Glashow and Marfatia. Two of them B_1 and B_2 are not realized in the see-saw mechanism without fine-tuning of parameters. We present some specific textures of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana neutrino one. In order to test these textures, we discuss the effect on the branching ratio of mu --> e gamma. We also study the U(1)_X times U(1)_{X'} flavor symmetry, in which U(1)_X is anomalous and U(1)_{X'} is non-anomolous, to reproduce texture zeros. We pres…
The most general, renormalizable Lagrangian that includes massive neutrinos contains ``right-handed neutrino'' Majorana masses of order M. While there are prejudices in favor of M much larger than the weak scale, virtually nothing is known about the magnitude of M. I argue that the LSND anomaly provides, currently, the only experimental hint: M around 1 eV. If this is the case, the LSND mixing angles are functions of the active neutrino masses and mixing and, remarkably, adequate fits to all data can be naturally obtained. I also discuss consequences of this ``eV-seesaw'' for supernova neutrin…
Constraints on the heavy sterile neutrino mixing angles are studied in the framework of a minimal supersymmetric ${\rm SO}(10)$ model with {\it double see-saw mechanism}. A new singlet matter in addition to the right-handed neutrinos is introduced to realize the double see-saw mechanism. The minimal ${\rm SO}(10)$ model gives an unambiguous Dirac neutrino mass matrix, which enables us to predict the masses and the mixing angles in the enlarged $9 \times 9$ neutrino mass matrix. Mixing angles between the light Majorana neutrinos and the heavy sterile neutrinos are shown to be within the LEP exp…
We consider the running of the neutrino mass matrix in the Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended by heavy singlet Majorana neutrinos. Unlike previous studies, we do not assume that all of the heavy mass eigenvalues are degenerate. This leads to various effective theories when the heavy degrees of freedom are integrated out successively. We calculate the Renormalization Group Equations that govern the evolution of the neutrino mass matrix in these effective theories. We show that an appropriate treatment of the singlet mass scales can yield a substantially diffe…
The usual see-saw mechanism for the generation of light neutrino masses is based on the assumption that all of the flavours of right-handed (more properly, sterile) neutrinos are heavy. If the sterile Majorana mass matrix is singular, one or more of the sterile neutrinos will have zero mass before mixing with the active (left-handed) neutrinos and be light after that mixing is introduced. In particular, a rank 1 sterile mass matrix leads naturally to two pseudo-Dirac pairs, one very light active Majorana neutrino and one heavy sterile Majorana neutrino. For any pattern of Dirac masses, there e…
The theoretical basics of neutrino mass and mixing are reviewed. Dirac and Majorana masses are explained, and added together to produce the see-saw picture of the lightness of neutrinos. This picture predicts that neutrinos are Majorana particles. The character, and an apparent paradox, of Majorana neutrinos are examined. The physics of neutrino flavor change (oscillation), in vacuo and in matter, is reviewed.
We calculate the two-loop diagrams that give a non-zero contribution to the electric dipole moment d_l of a charged lepton l due to possible Majorana masses of neutrinos. Using the example with one generation of the Standard Model leptons and two heavy right-handed neutrinos, we demonstrate that the non-vanishing result for d_l first appears in order O(m_l m_ν^2 G_F^2), where m_νis the mass of the light neutrino and the see-saw type relation is imposed. This effect is beyond the reach of presently planned experiments.
The see-saw mechanism is a very attractive explanation for small neutrino masses, parametrized at the GUT scale by the right-handed Majorana mass matrix, ${\cal M}$, and the neutrino Yukawa matrix, ${\bf Y_ν}$. We show that in a SUSY model with universal soft terms, ${\cal M}$ and ${\bf Y_ν}$ can be calculated from the light neutrino masses, the MNS matrix, and ${\bf Y^{\dagger}_ν} {\bf Y_ν}$, which enters into the left-handed slepton radiative corrections. This suggests that in principle the GUT-scale inputs of the seesaw could be reconstructed from the neutrino and sneutrino mass matrices. W…
We study the implications of neutrino oscillations with maximal mixing for the neutrino Dirac and Majorana matrices in the see-saw mechanism for three non degenerate neutrino masses. We find the form of the Dirac matrix for a structure-less Majorana matrix and, conversely, the structure of the Majorana matrix if the Dirac matrix is according to our naive intuition. We give some examples of Majorana matrices that, in a 3 X 3 context, lead to maximal mixing without too much fine tuning and cross talk with the Dirac input.
We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the neutrino sector, in the context of a D-brane Pati-Salam-like model, that can be obtained as a simple alternative to $SO(10)$ GUT's in theories with open and unoriented strings. In such D-brane models, exotic stringy instantons can correct the right-handed neutrino mass matrix in a calculable way, thus affecting mass hierarchies and modifying the see-saw mechanism to what we name exotic see-saw. For a wide range of parameters, a compact spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses can occur that gives rise to a predictive scenario for low energy observ…
The charged lepton flavour violating (LFV) radiative decays, $μ\to e+γ$, $τ\to μ+γ$ and $τ\to e +γ$ are investigated in a class of supersymmetric $A_4$ models with three heavy right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrinos, in which the lepton (neutrino) mixing is predicted to leading order (LO) to be tri-bimaximal. The light neutrino masses are generated via the type I see-saw mechanism. The analysis is done within the framework of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) scenario, which provides flavour universal boundary conditions at the scale of grand unification $M_X \approx 2 \times 10^{16}$ GeV. Detail…
A possible interplay of both terms in the type II see-saw formula is illustrated by presenting a novel way to generate deviations from exact bimaximal neutrino mixing. In type II see-saw mechanism with dominance of the non-canonical SU(2)_L triplet term, the conventional see-saw term can give a small contribution to the neutrino mass matrix. If the triplet term corresponds to the bimaximal mixing scheme in the normal hierarchy, the small contribution of the conventional see-saw term naturally generates non-maximal solar neutrino mixing. Atmospheric neutrino mixing is also reduced from maximal,…
Assuming only a hierarchical structure of the heavy Majorana neutrino masses and of the neutrino Dirac mass matrix m_D of the see-saw mechanism, we find that in order to produce the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis, the scale of m_D should be given by the up-quark masses. Lepton flavor violating decays μ\to e + γ, τ\to μ+ γand τ\to e + γare considered and a characteristic relation between their decay rates is predicted. The effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay depends on the CP violating phase controlling the leptogenesis if one of the heavy Major…
We examine a recently proposed symmetry/condition by Friedberg and Lee in the framework where three right-handed neutrinos are added to the spectrum of the three-family Minimal Standard Model. It is found that the right-handed neutrinos are very special, with respect to this symmetry. In the symmetry limit the neutrinos are massless and that may be a hint about why they are light. Imposed as a condition and not as a full symmetry, we find that one of the three right-handed neutrinos simply decouples (has only gravitational interactions) and that there is a massless interacting neutrino. The po…
