The $J/Ψ$ mass shift in cold nuclear matter is computed using an effective Lagrangian approach. The mass shift is computed by evaluating $D$ and $D^*$ meson loop contributions to the $J/Ψ$ self-energy employing medium-modified meson masses. The modification of the $D$ and $D^*$ masses in nuclear matter is obtained using the quark-meson coupling model. The loop integrals are regularized with dipole form factors and the sensitivity of the results to the values of form-factor cutoff masses is investigated. The $J/Ψ$ mass shift arising from the modification of the $D$ and $D^*$ loops at normal nuclear matter density is found to range from -16 MeV to -24 MeV under a wide variation of values of the cutoff masses. Experimental perspectives for the formation of a bound state of $J/Ψ$ to a nucleus are investigated.
Cold nuclear matter effects on J/psi production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are evaluated taking into account the specific J/psi production kinematics at the partonic level, the shadowing of the initial parton distributions and the absorption in the nuclear matter. We consider two different parton processes for the c-cbar pair production: one with collinear gluons and a recoiling gluon in the final state and the other with initial gluons carrying intrinsic transverse momentum. Our results are compared to RHIC observables. The smaller values of the nuclear modification fact…
Cross sections for the concurrent production of pairs of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) and/or gauge bosons (W, Z) from double-parton scatterings (DPS) in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC are calculated. The estimates are based on next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, including nuclear modifications of the parton densities, for the corresponding single-scattering cross sections. Expected event rates for J/psi+J/psi, J/psi+Upsilon, J/psi+W, J/psi+Z, Upsilon+Upsilon, Upsilon+W, Upsilon+Z, and same-sign W+W production in their (di)leptonic decay modes…
In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, charm quark fragmentation is modified due to the melting of strings inside the high density partonic matter. D mesons produced in hadronization can further produce J/psi particles. Using a multiphase transport model, we investigate the effect on the rapidity distribution of the produced J/psi particles with two different charm quark fragmentation functions. It is shown that the J/psi rapidity distribution is sensitive to the nuclear modification of charm quark fragmentation and thus is a good indicator of the onset of string melting and the production…
The observed pT-dependence of nuclear effects for J/Psi produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC might look puzzling, since the nuclear suppression seems to fade at large pT. We explain this by the interplay of three mechanisms: (i) attenuation of J/Psi in the hot medium created in the nuclear collision; (ii) initial state shadowing of charmed quarks and attenuation of a c-cbar dipole propagating through the colliding nuclei; (iii) a strong Cronin effect for J/Psi caused by saturation of gluons in the colliding nuclei. All three effects are well under control and calculated in a parameter free…
Based on a Glauber model, a statistical analysis of all mid-rapidity J/psi hadroproduction and leptoproduction data on nuclear targets is carried out. This allows us to determine the J/psi-nucleon inelastic cross section, whose knowledge is crucial to interpret the J/psi suppression observed in heavy-ion collisions, at SPS and at RHIC. The values of sigma are extracted from each experiment. A clear tension between the different data sets is reported. The global fit of all data gives sigma=3.4+/-0.2 mb, which is significantly smaller than previous estimates. A similar value, sigma=3.5+/-0.2 mb,…
We consider the J/Psi production in proton (deuteron) -- nucleus collisions at high energies. We argue that the production mechanism in this case is different from that in pp collisions due to gluon saturation in the nucleus and formation of the Color Glass Condensate. At forward rapidities (in the proton fragmentation region), the production of J/Psi is increasingly suppressed both as a function of rapidity and centrality. On the other hand, at backward rapidities at RHIC (in the fragmentation region of the nucleus) the coherent effects lead to a modest enhancement of the production cross sec…
We evaluate the transverse momentum spectrum of J/Psi (up to semi-hard momenta) in pA and AA collisions taking into account only the initial state effects, but resumming them to all orders in α_s^2 A^{1/3}. In our previous papers we noticed that cold nuclear matter effects alone could not explain the experimental data on rapidity and centrality dependencies of the J/Psi yield in AA collisions indicating the existence of an additional suppression mechanism. Our present calculations indicate that the discrepancy persists and even increases at semi-hard transverse momenta, implying a significant …
We update our previous studies of nuclear-matter effects on J/Psi production in proton-nucleus for the recent LHC pPb runs at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV. We have analysed the effects of the modification of the gluon PDFs in nucleus, using an exact kinematics for a 2->2 process, namely g+g->J/Psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. This allows to constrain the transverse-momentum while computing the nuclear modification factor for different rapidities, unlike with the usual simplified kinematics. Owing to the absence of measurement in pp collisions at the same sqrt(s_NN) and owing to the expected significant unc…
We present new results based on an improved version of the Glauber model, used to describe the nuclear absorption of J/psi in reactions between nuclei at high energy. The excitation of the colour degrees of freedom of nucleons, due to collisions mediated by one-gluon exchange, is taken into account. It is found that the proposed mechanism leads to larger nuclear absorption of J/psi than previously considered.
We suggest the ratio of the $ψ''(3770)/ψ'(3686)$ production cross sections as an unambiguous probe of the dominance of hard, point-like physics in charmonium production. If hard physics dominates the charmonium production the ratio : ${σ(ψ'')\overσ(ψ')}\approx {Γ(ψ''\to l^+l^-)\over Γ(ψ'\to l^+l^-)} \approx 0.1$ is independent of the process. We argue that since the dominant $D\bar D$ decay mode of the $ψ''$-meson can be detected with a high efficiency at the current facilities the effective counting rate for the $ψ''$ production should be comparable to that of the $ψ'$ and hence it could be o…
We have carried out a wide study of Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) effects on J/Psi production in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. We have studied the effects of three different gluon-shadowing parametrisations, using the usual simplified kinematics for which the momentum of the gluon recoiling against the J/Psi is neglected as well as an exact kinematics for a 2 -> 2 process, namely g+g -> J/psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. We have shown that the rapidity distribution of the nuclear modification factor R_dAu, and particularly its anti-shadowing peak, is systematically shifted…
A parameter-free calculation for J/Psi suppression in pA collisions, based on the dipole description, is confronted with the new data from the PHENIX experiment. Achieving good agreement, we employed this model predicting the contribution of initial state interactions (ISI) to J/Psi suppression in AA collisions. Such a transition from pA to AA is not straightforward, since involves specific effects of double color filtering and boosting of the saturation scale. Relying on this refined ISI contribution, we updated the previous analysis of RHIC data on J/Psi production in Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisi…
The hypothesis of statistical production of J/psi mesons at hadronization is formulated and checked against experimental data. It explains in the natural way the observed scaling behavior of the J/psi to pion ratio at the CERN SPS energies. Using the multiplicities of J/psi and eta mesons the hadronization temperature T_H = 175 MeV is found, which agrees with the previous estimates of the temperature parameter based on the analysis of the hadron yield systematics.
Using a hadron-string cascade model, JPCIAE, we study the effect of nuclear deformation on J/Psi suppression in the collision of uranium nuclei at 200A GeV/c. We find that the J/Psi survival probability is much smaller if the major axes of both deformed nuclei are along the beam direction than if they are perpendicular to the beam direction.
The data for the mean squared transverse momentum P_t as function of transverse energy E_t of J/Psi and Psi' produced in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-SPS are analyzed and it is claimed that they contain information about the time structure of anomalous suppression. A transport equation which describes transverse motion of J/Psi and Psi' in the absorptive medium is proposed and solved for a QGP and a comover scenario of suppression. While the comover approach accounts for the data fairly well without adjusting any parameter, the fit to the data within the QGP scenario requires to assume anomalo…
Interpreting the J/psi suppression reported in nucleus--nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC requires the quantitative understanding of cold nuclear matter effects, such as the inelastic rescattering of J/psi states in nuclei or the nuclear modification of parton densities. With respect to our former Glauber analysis, we include in the present work the new PHENIX d--Au measurements, and analyze as well all existing data using the EPS08 nuclear parton densities recently released. The largest suppression reported in the new PHENIX analysis leads in turn to an increase of sigma from 3.5 +/- 0.3 mb …
The space-time evolution of J/psi production in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy is investigated in a transport model. Both gluon dissociation and continuous regeneration of J/psis inside deconfined state are considered.
We investigate the masses of the lowest c\bar{c} states, the J/psi and eta_c, in nuclear matter using QCD sum rules. Up to dimension four, the differences between the operator product expansions in vacuum and in medium arise from the density-dependent change in the gluon condensate and from a new contribution proportional to the nucleon expectation value of the twist-2 gluon operator. Both terms together give an attractive shift of about 5-10 MeV to the J/psi and eta_c masses in nuclear matter.
We point out that data on the onset of anomalous J/psi suppression as a function of nucleon numbers A and B could provide information on the dynamics of nuclear interactions. In particular the models of anomalous J/psi suppression by Blaizot and Ollitrault (BO) and by Kharzeev, Lourenco, Nardi and Satz (KLNS) are based on different assumptions on the dynamics of nuclear collisions and lead to different predictions of the dependence of the onset of anomalous J/psi suppression on nucleon numbers of colliding nuclei. The data on this onset as function of A and B could become a tool for the study …
We derive the formulae for the cross section of J/Psi production in high energy pA and AA collisions taking into account the gluon saturation/color glass condensate effects. We then perform the numerical calculations of the corresponding nuclear modification factors and find a good agreement between our calculations and the experimental data on J/Psi production in dA collisions. We also observe that cold nuclear modification effects alone cannot describe the data on J/Psi production in AA collisions. Additional final state suppression (at RHIC) and enhancement (at LHC) mechanisms are required …
We have studied the J/psi suppression in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. J/psi production is assumed to be a two step process, (i) formation of c bar{c} pair, which is accurately calculable in QCD and (ii) formation of J/psi meson from the c bar{c} pair, which can be conveniently parameterized. In a pA/AA collision, as the c bar{c} pair pass through the nuclear medium, it gains relative square momentum. As a result, some of the c bar{c} pairs can gain enough momentum to cross the threshold to become open charm meson, leading to suppression in pA/AA collisions. The model without any fre…
The transverse momentum (pt) dependence of J/psi production in heavy ion collisions is investigated in a transport model with both initial production and continuous regeneration of charmonia. The competition between the two production mechanisms results in a pt suppression in central collisions, the gluon multi-scattering in the initial stage leads to a high pt enhancement, and the regeneration populates J/psis at low pt region and induces a minimum in R_AA(pt). These three phenomena are indeed observed in both 200 GeV Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy.
We compute cross sections for incoherent diffractive J/Psi production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering. The cross section is proportional to A in the dilute limit and to A^(1/3) in the black disc limit, with a large nuclear suppression due to saturation effects. The t-dependence of the cross section, if it can be measured accurately enough, is sensitive to the impact parameter profile of the gluons in the nucleus and their fluctuations, a quantity that determines the initial conditions of a relativistic heavy ion collision. The nuclear suppression in incoherent diffraction shows how…
Using a multiphase transport model, we study the relative importance of J/psi suppression mechanisms due to plasma screening, gluon scattering, and hadron absorption in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We find that for collisions between heavy nuclei such as Au+Au, both plasma screening and gluon scattering are important. As a result, the effect due to absorption by hadrons becomes relatively minor. The final J/psi survival probability in these collisions is only a few percent. In the case of collisions between light nuclei such as S+S, the effect of plasma screenin…
The experimental results on the pion, strangeness and J/psi production in high energy nuclear collisions are discussed. The anomalous energy dependence of pion and strangeness production is consistent with the hypothesis that a transition to a deconfined phase takes place between the top AGS (15 AGeV) and the SPS (200 AGeV) energies. The J/psi production systematics at the SPS can be understood assuming that the J/psi mesons are created at hadronization according to the available hadronic phase space. This new interpretation of the J/psi data allows one to establish a coherent picture of high …
Nuclear effects for J/Psi production in pA collisions are controlled by the coherence and color transparency effects. Color transparency onsets when the time of formation of the charmonium wave function becomes longer than the inter-nucleon spacing. In this energy regime the effective break-up cross section for a c-cbar dipole depends on energy and nuclear path length, and agrees well with data from fixed target experiments, both in magnitude and energy dependence. At higher energies of RHIC and LHC coherence in c-cbar pair production leads to charm quark shadowing which is a complement to the…
We investigate possible mass shift and width broadening of J/psi in hot gluonic matter using QCD sum rule. Input values of gluon condensates at finite temperature are extracted from lattice QCD data for the energy density and pressure. Although stability of the moment ratio is achieved only up to T/Tc ~ 1.05, the gluon condensates cause a decrease of the moment ratio, which results in change of spectral properties. Using the Breit-Wigner form for the phenomenological side, we find that mass shift of J/psi just above Tc can reach maximally 200 MeV and width can broaden to dozens of MeV.
We review the effect of hadron structure changes in a nuclear medium using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which is based on a mean field description of non-overlapping nucleon (or baryon) bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons. This approach leads to simple scaling relations for the changes of hadron masses in a nuclear medium. It can also be extended to describe finite nuclei, as well as the properties of hypernuclei and meson-nucleus deeply bound states. It is of great interest that the model predicts a variation of the nucleon form factors in nuclear m…
Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the hot medium effects on J/psi production in p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV. Including also the cold nuclear matter effects, we are able to reproduce recent experimental results on the nuclear modification factor R_{pPb}(J/psi) measured by the ALICE Collaboration. We have also made predictions for the R_{pPb} of J/psi and the double ratio R_{pPb}^{pro}(psi')/R_{pPb}^{pro}(J/psi) of prompt quarkonia produced…
The charmonium yields are expected to be considerably suppressed if a deconfined medium is formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In addition, the bottomonium states, with the possible exception of the Upsilon(1S) state, are also expected to be suppressed in heavy-ion collisions. However, in proton-nucleus collisions the quarkonium production cross sections, even those of the Upsilon(1S), are also suppressed. These "cold nuclear matter" effects need to be accounted for before signals of the high density QCD medium can be identified in the measurements made in nucleus-nucleus collisions. W…
Measured J/Psi production cross sections for 200 and 450 GeV/c protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets are analyzed within a Glauber framework which takes into account energy loss of the beam proton, the time delay of particle production due to quantum coherence, and absorption of the J/Psi on nucleons. The best representation is obtained for a coherence time of 0.5 fm/c, previously determined by Drell-Yan production in proton-nucleus collisions, and an absorption cross section of 3.6 mb, which is consistent with the value deduced from photoproduction of the J/Psi on nuclear targets.
In order to study the interactions and structure of various types of matter one typically needs to carry out scattering experiments utilizing many different particles as projectiles. Whereas beams of $e^\pm$, $μ^\pm$, $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, proton, antiproton, and of various heavy ions have been produced and have enabled many scientific breakthroughs, beams of antineutrons, hyperons ($Λ$, $Σ$ and $Ξ$) and their antiparticles are typically not easy to obtain. Here we point out and investigate a new high-quality source of these particles: a super $J/ψ$ factory with capability of accumulating trillion…
Data from J/psi and psi' production in p-A collisions are used to determine the cross section for absorption of pre-resonance charmonium in nuclear matter. The J/psi suppression in O-Cu, O-U and S-U collisions is fully reproduced by the corresponding nuclear absorption, while Pb-Pb collisions show an additional suppression increasing with centrality. We study the onset of this change in terms of hadronic comover interactions and conclude that so far no conventional hadronic description can consistently account for all data. Deconfinement, starting at a critical point determined by central S-U …
We investigate J/psi transverse momentum distribution in a transport approach. While the nuclear modification factor R_{AA}(N_p) at RHIC is almost the same as at SPS, the averaged transverse momentum square <p_t^2> and R_{AA}(p_t) are very different at SPS, RHIC and LHC and can be used to differentiate from the J/psi production mechanisms in high energy nuclear collisions.
We investigate the production of psi(2S) in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We first address charmonium production in 200 GeV d-Au collisions at RHIC; the strong suppression of psi' mesons observed in these reactions indicates mechanisms beyond initial cold nuclear matter effects. We find that a more complete treatment of hadronic dissociation reactions leads to appreciable psi' suppression in the hadronic medium of an expanding fireball background for d-Au collisions. When implementing the updated hadronic reaction rates into a fireball for 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC, the r…
The effects of energy loss in cold nuclear matter on J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are studied. A simple model based on first principles and depending on a single free parameter is able to reproduce J/psi suppression data at large xF and at various center-of-mass energies. These results strongly support energy loss as a dominant effect in quarkonium suppression. They also give some hint on its hadroproduction mechanism suggesting color neutralization to happen on long time-scales. Predictions for J/psi and Upsilon suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are made.
We calculate the Wilson coefficients of all dimension 6 gluon operators with non zero spin in the correlation function between two heavy vector currents. For the twist-4 part, we first identify the three independent gluon operators, and then proceed with the calculation of the Wilson coefficients using the fixed point gauge. Together with the previous calculation of the Wilson coefficients for the dimension 6 scalar gluon operators by Nikolaev and Radyushkin, our result completes the list of all the Wilson coefficients of dimension 6 gluon operators in the correlation function between heavy ve…
The effect of parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter on the suppression of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) in heavy-ion collisions is investigated, by extrapolating a model based on coherent radiative energy loss recently shown to describe successfully J/psi and Upsilon suppression in proton-nucleus collisions. Model predictions in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC (Au-Au, Cu-Cu, and Cu-Au) and LHC (Pb-Pb) show a sizable suppression arising from the sole effect of energy loss in cold matter. This effect should thus be considered in order to get a reliable baseline for cold nuclear matter effects in q…
Coherent multiple scatterings of c and cbar quark pairs in the environment of heavy ion collisions have been used in a previous work by Qiu et al. [Qiu:1998rz] to study J/psi suppression. That model suggests that heavy quark re-scatterings in a cold nuclear medium can completely explain the centrality dependence of the observed J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS [Abreu:2001kd]. Their calculations also revealed significant differences under the assumptions of a color singlet or color octet production mechanism. A more recent analytic calculation [Fujii:2003fq], which includes inco…
The J/Psi cross section ratios of p-A/p-p under different collision energy is calculated with cold nuclear matter effects redefined in this paper. The advantage of these new definitions is that all cold nuclear matter effects have clear physical origins. The radios are compared with the corresponding experiment data and that calculated with classic nuclear effects. The ratios calculated with new definitions can reproduce almost all existing J/Psi measurements in p-A collisions more accuratly than that calculated with classic nuclear effects. Hence, this paper presents a new approach to explain …
We discuss a novel mechanism for J/Psi$ production in nuclear collisions arising due to the high density of gluons. We demonstrate that gluon saturation in the colliding nuclei is a dominant source of J/Psi suppression and can explain its experimentally observed rapidity and centrality dependence.
A collision of a light meson and a charmonium produces quarks and antiquarks first, then the charm quark fragments into a charmed hadron, and finally three or more mesons are produced. This is the mechanism that we consider and propose to understand the prompt-J/psi nuclear modification factor in the range of J/psi transverse momentum from 10 GeV/c to 18 GeV/c, as measured by the CMS Collaboration and the ATLAS Collaboration. Unpolarized cross sections are derived and calculated for the reactions pion+charmonium ->H_c+X with H_c being a charmed meson. Numerical cross sections are parametrized …
We study the production of $c \bar{c}$ pairs and dimuons from hard collisions in nuclear reactions within the covariant transport approach HSD. Adopting 6 mb for the $c \bar{c}$-baryon cross section the data on $J/Ψ$ suppression in p + A reactions are reproduced in line with calculations based on the Glauber model. Furthermore, using $J/Ψ$ absorption cross sections with mesons above the $D\bar{D}$ threshold in the order of 1.5 - 3 mb we find that all data on $J/Ψ$ suppression from NA38/NA50 can be described without assuming the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. Alternatively, we also investig…
We study the scattering lengths of charmonia (J/psi and eta_c) with light hadrons (pi, rho and N) by the quenched lattice QCD simulations on 24x24x24x48, 32x32x32x48 and 48x48x48x48 lattices with the lattice spacing a = 0.068 fm. The scattering length is extracted by using the Luscher's phase-shift formula together with the measurement of the energy shift Delta E of two hadrons on the lattice. We find that there exist attractive interactions in all channels, J/psi(eta_c)-pi, J/psi(eta_c)-rho and J/psi(eta_c)-N: The s-wave J/psi-pi (eta_c-pi) scattering length is determined as 0.0119+-0.0039 fm…
The J/psi elliptic flow in high energy nuclear collisions is calculated in a transport model. While the flow is very small at SPS and RHIC energies, it is strongly enhanced at LHC energy due to the dominance of the regeneration mechanism.
We estimate the $D$, $\overline{D}$ and $J/Ψ$ meson potentials in nuclei. $J/Ψ$-nuclear potential (self-energy) is calculated based on the color-singlet mechanism, by the $DD$ and $DD^*$ meson loops. This consistently includes the in-medium properties of $D$ and $D^*$ mesons. The potential obtained for the $J/Ψ$ meson is attractive, and it is complementary to the attraction obtained from the color-octet gluon-based mechanism. We predict that the $D^-$ and $J/Ψ$ mesons will be bound in nuclei under proper conditions.
We calculate the yields of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC as a function of their transverse momentum. Based upon non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, our results include both color-singlet and color-octet contributions and feed-down effects from excited states. In reactions with ultra-relativistic nuclei, we focus on the consistent implementation of dynamically calculated nuclear matter effects, such as coherent power corrections, cold nuclear matter energy loss, and the Cronin effect in the initial state. In the final state, we consider radiative energy loss for the…
Understanding the detailed production and hadronization mechanisms for heavy quarkonia and their modification in a nuclear environment presents one of the major challenges in QCD. Calculations including nuclear-modified parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and fitting of break-up cross sections (sigma_breakup) as parameters have been successful at describing many features of J/psi modification in proton(deuteron)-nucleus collisions. In this paper, we extend these calculations to explore different geometric dependencies of the modification and confront them with new experimental results from t…
The centrality dependence of sqrt(s_NN)= 200 GeV d+Au {J/ψ} data, measured in 12 rapidity bins that span -2.2 < y < 2.4, has been fitted using a model containing an effective absorption cross section combined with EPS09 NLO shadowing. The centrality dependence of the shadowing contribution was allowed to vary nonlinearly, employing a variety of assumptions, in an effort to explore the limits of what can be determined from the data. The impact parameter dependencies of the effective absorption cross section and the shadowing parameterization are sufficiently distinct to be determined separately…
Based on a kinetic description of J/psi dissociation and production in an expanding quark-gluon plasma that is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, we have studied the double ratio R_{p Pb}(psi')/R_{p Pb}(J/psi) of charmonia in p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV by including not only the cold nuclear matter effects but also the hot nuclear matter effects. We find that the double ratio of prompt charmonia is significantly suppressed in the most central collisions as a result of the hot nuclear matter effects.
We calculate the rapidity dependence of $J/ψ$ nuclear modification factor and averaged transverse momentum square in heavy ion collisions at RHIC in a 3-dimensional transport approach with regeneration mechanism.
We investigate the transition from suppression to enhancement of J/psi mesons produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions in the framework of the statistical hadronization model. The calculations are confronted with the most recent data from the RHIC accelerator. This comparison yields first direct evidence for generation of J/psi mesons at the phase boundary. Based on the success of this approach we make specific predictions for LHC energy.
The enhanced suppression of $J/ψ$ production at large $x_F$ in $pA$ collisions is studied in the framework of gluon depletion at large $x_1$. The nonperturbative process that modifies the gluon distribution as the gluons propagate in nuclear matter is described by an evolution equation with a kernal to be determined by phenomenology. With nuclear shadowing and anti-shadowing taken into account, the effect on the gluon distribution is shown to be a depletion in excess of 40% at $x_1 \approx 0.8$ for $A > 100$. There is a small amount of enhancement of the gluon distribution at small $x_1$, but …
We investigate near-threshold production of quarkonium resonances in cold nuclear matter through a scaling theory with two exponents which are fixed by existing data on near-threshold J/psi production in proton-nucleus collisions. Interestingly, it seems possible to extend one of the multifractal dimensions to the production of other mesons in cold nuclear matter. The scaling theory can be tested and refined in experiments at the upcoming high-intensity FAIR accelerator complex in GSI.
The suppression and collective flow of open and hidden heavy flavor in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied with the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach to MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS). Charm and bottom quarks interact with the rest of the medium via elastic scatterings with an improved Debye screening and a running coupling. Heavy flavor electron data from RHIC can only be described if the cross section is multiplied with K=3.5 to mimic the contribution from radiative processes. With the same value for K we compare to elliptic flow data of D mesons at the LHC and find…
