Coordinate transformation is applied to design an all-dielectric device for Extraordinary Transmission (ET) in a single sub-wavelength slit. The proposed device has a broadband feature and can be applied from microwave to visible frequency bands. Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations are used to verify the device's performance. The results show that significantly increased transmission is achieved through the sub-wavelength aperture from 4 GHz to 8 GHz when the device is applied. In contrast with previously reported systems, the frequency sensitivity of the new device is very low.
Extraordinary transmission through subwavelength metallic apertures has been extensively studied and demonstrated. At resonance, the coupling between surface plasmons on both surfaces of the metallic film tunnels the photon from the one side to the other through the subwavelength aperture with small transmission efficiency based on the metals dielectric parameters and aperture geometrical dimensions. Here, we report a completely different form of extraordinary transmission, where the two subwavelength complementary apertures when coupled with an optical cavity induce about 100% extraordinary t…
We investigate experimentally the transmission properties of single sub-wavelength coaxial apertures in thin metal films (t = 110 nm). Enhanced transmission through a single sub-wavelength coaxial aperture illuminated with a strongly focused radially polarized light beam is reported. In our experiments we achieved up to four times enhanced transmission through a single coaxial aperture as compared to a (hollow) circular aperture with the same outer diameter. We attribute this enhancement of transmission to the excitation of a TEM-mode for illumination with radially polarized light inside the si…
This paper theoretically and experimentally presents a first report on broadband enhanced transmission through stacked metallic multi-layers perforated with coaxial annular apertures (CAAs). Different from previous studies on extraordinary transmission that occurs at a single frequency, the enhanced transmission of our system with two or three metallic layers can span a wide frequency range with a bandwidth about 60% of the central frequency. The phenomena arise from the excitation and hybridization of guided resonance modes in CAAs among different layers. Measured transmission spectra are in …
Subwavelength-slotted parallel plate waveguides exhibit a localized electromagnetic resonance bound to the slits at a frequency slightly below the transverse electric cutoff [R. Merlin, Phys. Rev. X 2, 031015 (2012)]. The resonance is long-lived and, as opposed to the vanishingly small transmission shown by a single sub-wavelength aperture, it gives perfect transmission for perfectly-conducting plates. We show that the aperture-supported resonances of a pair of slotted copper plates have long lifetimes at THz frequencies. Finite element method calculations show that these bound resonances can …
We verify the feasibility of the proposed theoretical strategy for designing the broadband near-zero permittivity (ENZ) metamaterial at optical frequency range with numerical simulations. In addition, the designed broadband ENZ stack are used as meta-atoms to build functional nanophotonic devices with extraordinary properties, including an ultranarrow electromagnetic energy tunneling channel and an ENZ concave focusing lens.
We numerically analyse extraordinary terahertz transmission properties of an array of rectangular shaped apertures perforated periodically on a thin metal film. The apertures are tapered at different angles to achieve higher field concentration at the tapered end. The periodic sub-wavelength scale apertures ensure plasmonic behaviour giving rise to the enhanced transmission of a specific frequency mode decided by the periodicity. We compare results of transmission with the rectangular shaped apertures of same parameters and observe a significant increase in the transmission for the tapered cas…
The terahertz transmission properties of symmetrical and asymmetrical annular apertures arrays (AAAs) are investigated both experimentally and numerically. It is found that only odd order resonant modes are observed for the symmetrical structures but both odd and even order resonances can be shown for the asymmetrical structures. Breaking the symmetry of AAAs by gradually displacing the H-shaped AAAs to U-shaped AAAs allows an intensity modulation depth of 99% of the second order resonance. Simulation results verify the experimental conclusions well. This result provides a tremendous opportuni…
Continuous films of metals like gold and silver with a thickness of a few tens of nm have poor optical transmission in the visible and infrared. However, the same films become largely transparent when the transmission is mediated by coupled surface plasmon polaritons on the two surfaces of the film. Likewise, it is expected that optical transmission through a hole in an opaque metal film would be negligible if the size of the hole is much smaller than the wavelength of the incident radiation. Contrary to this, it was found a few years ago that opaque metal films perforated with a periodic arra…
We revisit the problem of extraordinary transmission of acoustic (electromagnetic) waves through a slit in a rigid (perfectly conducting) wall. We use matched asymptotic expansions to study the pertinent limit where the slit width is small compared to the wall thickness, the latter being commensurate with the wavelength. Our analysis focuses on near-resonance frequencies, furnishing elementary formulae for the field enhancement, transmission efficiency, and deviations of the resonances from the Fabry-Perot frequencies of the slit. We find that the apertures' near fields play a dominant role, i…
We study, and illustrate with numerical calculations, transmission enhancement by subwavelength 2D slits due to the dominant role played by the excitation of the eigenmodes of plasmonic cylinders when they are placed at the aperture entrance; and also due to reinforced and highly localized energy in the slit as a consequence of the formation of a nanojet. We show that, providing the illumination is chosen such that an aperture transmitting eigenmode is generated, the phenomenon is independent of whether or not the slit alone produces extraordinary transmission; although in the former case this…
In the absence of separate apertures, the size and focal length of a lens determines both its resolution and light-collection ability defined by numerical-aperture (NA) and f/#, respectively. We utilize free-form broadband-diffractive-optical elements (BDOEs) to create flat lenses that decouple NA from f#, whereby the resolution of the lens may be chosen independently from its light-collection ability. Specifically, we designed, fabricated and characterized three BDOE lenses operating in the visible band (450nm-750nm), each with f/11.25, but with NAs of 0.00075, 0.0067 and 0.054, respectively.…
Far-field imaging beyond the diffraction limit is a long sought-after goal in various imaging applications, which requires usually an array of antennas or mechanical scanning. Here, we present an alternative and novel concept for this challenging problem: a single radar system consisting of a spatial-temporal resonant aperture antenna (referred to as the slavery antenna) and a broadband horn antenna (termed the master antenna). We theoretically demonstrate that such resonant aperture antenna is responsible for converting parts of the evanescent waves into propagating waves, and delivering them…
We present the design, fabrication, and measured performance of metamaterial Anti-Reflection Cuttings (ARCs) for large-format alumina filters operating over more than an octave of bandwidth to be deployed on the Simons Observatory (SO). The ARC consists of sub-wavelength features diced into the optic's surface using a custom dicing saw with near-micron accuracy. The designs achieve percent-level control over reflections at angles of incidence up to 20$^\circ$. The ARCs were demonstrated on four 42 cm diameter filters covering the 75-170 GHz band and a 50 mm diameter prototype covering the 200-…
Black phosphorus (BP), a relative new plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) material, offers unique photonic and electronic properties. In this work, we propose a new tunable and broadband ultrathin coherent perfect absorber (CPA) device operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. It is based on a bifacial metasurface made of BP patch periodic arrays separated by a thin dielectric layer. Broadband CPA bandwidth is realized due to the ultrathin thickness of the proposed device and the extraordinary properties of BP. In addition, a substantial modulation between CPA and complete transparency is a…
The incumbent technology for bringing light to the nanoscale, the near-field scanning optical microscope, has notoriously small throughput efficiencies - of the order of 10^(-4) - 10^(-5), or less. We report on a broadband, topological, unidirectionally-guiding structure, not requiring adiabatic tapering and in principle enabling near-perfect (ideally, ~100%) optical transmission through an unstructured single (POTUS) arbitrarily-subdiffraction slit at its end. Specifically, for a slit width of just lambda_eff / 72 (lambda_0 / 138) the attained normalized transmission coefficient reaches a val…
This paper has presented inversely determining the resonant configuration of the bilateral nanostructures for periodic metallic slits with extraordinary optical transmission performance. The topology optimization approach is utilized to implement the inverse design procedure. Several geometrical configurations of the bilateral nanostructures are derived for periodic metallic slits. The resonant performance of the derived nanostructures are demonstrated by the transmission spectra, where the transmission peak is presented at the specified wavelength in the inverse design procedure. This provide…
Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) is a phenomenon of exceptional light transmission through a metallic film with hole arrays enhanced by surface plasmon (SP) resonance, which stimulates renewed research hotspots in metamaterials, subwavelength optics, and plasmonics. Below the frequency of the first order SP mode, f_pl0, the metallic film typically shows strong reflection and no EOT. Here, we report an unusual EOT phenomenon below fpl0, i.e., beyond the long-held spectral boundary of classic EOTs. It is induced by a novel bound surface state in a Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity comprising a hol…
Metasurfaces have attracted widespread attention due to an increasing demand of compact and wearable optical devices. For many applications, polarization-insensitive metasurfaces are highly desirable and appear to limit the choice of their constituent elements to isotropic nanostructures. This greatly restricts the degrees of geometric parameters available in designing each nanostructure. Here, we demonstrate a polarization-insensitive metalens using otherwise anisotropic nanofins which offer additional control over the dispersion and phase of the output light. As a result, we can render a met…
We propose a novel concept of differential coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (D-CASSI) technique exploiting the benefits of using {-1,+1} random mask, which is demonstrated by a broadband single-snapshot hyperspectral camera using compressed sensing. To double the information, we encode the image by two complementary random masks, which proved to be superior to two independent patterns. We utilize dispersed and non-dispersed encoded images captured in parallel onto a single detector. We explored several different approaches to processing the measured data, which demonstrates significant…
High-quality flat optical elements require efficient light deflection to large angles and over a wide wavelength spectrum. Although phase gradient metasurfaces achieve this by continuously adding phase shifts in the range of 0 to 2π to the electric field with subwavelength-sized scatterers, their performance is limited by the spatial resolution of phase modulation at the interface. Here, we introduce a new class of metasurfaces based on a general formulation, where the phase shifts cover less than the full 0-2π range, offering significant advantages. More specifically, this approach allows the…
The functionalities of a wide range of optical and opto-electronic devices are based on resonance effects and active tuning of the amplitude and wavelength response is often essential. Plasmonic nanostructures are an efficient way to create optical resonances, a prominent example is the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through arrays of nanoholes patterned in a metallic film. Tuning of resonances by heating, applying electrical or optical signals has proven to be more elusive, due to the lack of materials that can induce modulation over a broad spectral range and/or at high speeds. Her…
We present broadband group velocity dispersion (GVD) measurements of commercially available ultra-high numerical aperture fibers (UHNA1, UHNA3, UHNA4, UHNA7 and PM2000D from Coherent-Nufern). Although these fibers are attractive for dispersion management in ultrafast fiber laser systems in the 2 μm wavelength region, experimental dispersion data in literature is scarce and inconsistent. Here we demonstrate the measurements using the spectral interferometry technique covering the typically used erbium, thulium and holmium emission bands. The results are characterized in terms of the standard-de…
The technological progress in spatial-light modulators (SLM) technology has made it possible to use those devices as programmable active focal-plane phase coronagraphic masks, opening the door to novel versatile and adaptive high-contrast imaging observation strategies. However, the scalar nature of the SLM-induced phase response is a potential hurdle when applying the approach to wideband light, as is typical in astronomical imaging. For the first time, we present laboratory results with broadband light (up to ~12pc bandwidth) for two commercially-available SLM devices used as active focal-pl…
We theoretically investigate second harmonic generation that originates from the nonlinear, magnetic Lorentz force term from single and multiple apertures carved on thick, opaque metal substrates. The linear transmission properties of apertures on metal substrates have been previously studied in the context of the extraordinary transmission of light. The transmission process is driven by a number of physical mechanisms, whose characteristics and relative importance depend on the thickness of the metallic substrate, slit size, and slit separation. In this work we show that a combination of cavi…
The characterization of exoplanet atmospheres using direct imaging spectroscopy requires high-contrast over a wide wavelength range. We study a recently proposed focal plane wavefront estimation algorithm that exclusively uses broadband images to estimate the electric field. This approach therefore reduces the complexity and observational overheads compared to traditional single wavelength approaches. The electric field is estimated as an incoherent sum of monochromatic intensities with the pair-wise probing technique. This paper covers the detailed implementation of the algorithm and an appli…
Efficiently collecting light emitted or scattered from nanoscale systems, which can be embedded in a high-index medium, is a challenge for fundamental spectroscopic studies and commercial applications of quantum dots, color centers, single molecules, plasmonic antennas, etc. Solid immersion lenses offer a powerful solution to increase the numerical aperture of the optical system, while being robust and compatible with cryogenic temperatures. However, they suffer from strong chromatic aberrations, limiting their applications to narrow-band excitation and emission spectral windows. Here, we desi…
Wavefront sensors are an important tool to characterize coherent beams of extreme ultraviolet radiation. However, conventional Hartmann-type sensors do not allow for independent wavefront characterization of different spectral components that may be present in a beam, which limits their applicability for intrinsically broadband high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources. Here we introduce a wavefront sensor that measures the wavefronts of all the harmonics in a HHG beam in a single camera exposure. By replacing the mask apertures with transmission gratings at different orientations, we simultaneou…
Optical limiters are nonlinear devices that feature decreasing transmittance with increasing incident optical intensity, and thus can protect sensitive components from high-intensity illumination. The ideal optical limiter reflects rather than absorbs light in its active ("limiting") state, minimizing risk of damage to the limiter itself. Previous efforts to realize reflective limiters were based on embedding nonlinear layers into relatively thick multilayer photonic structures, resulting in substantial fabrication complexity, reduced speed and, in some instances, limited working bandwidth. We…
We present both theoretical and experimental results on fluorescence of single defect centers in diamond nanocrystals embedded in a planar dielectric microcavity. From a theoretical point of view, we show that the overall fluorescence collection efficiency using moderate numerical aperture microscope objective can be enhanced by using a low quality factor microcavity. This could be used in particular for low temperature applications where the numerical aperture of collection microscope objectives is limited due to the experimental constraints. We experimentally investigate the control of the f…
