PHENIX has measured the e^+e^- pair continuum in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions over a wide range of mass and transverse momenta. While the p+p data in the mass range below the phi meson are well described by known contributions from light meson decays, the Au+Au minimum bias inclusive mass spectrum shows an enhancement by a factor of 4.7 +/- 0.4(stat)} +/- 1.5(syst) +/- 0.9(model) in the mass range 0.15<m_ee<0.75 GeV/c^2. At low mass (m_ee<0.3 GeV/c^2) and high p_T (1<p_T<5~GeV/c) an enhanced e^+e^- pair yield is observed that is in qualitative agreement with hydrodynamical models of thermal photon emission with initial temperatures ranging from T_init ~= 300-600 MeV at times of 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision.
Enabled by the addition of a TOF detector system in 2010, the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES-I) at RHIC allows STAR to conduct an unprecedented energy-dependent study of dielectron production within a homogeneous experimental environment, and hence close the wide gap in the QCD phase diagram between SPS and top RHIC energies. This thesis concentrates on the understanding of the LMR enhancement regarding its $M_{ee}$, $p_{T}$ and energy dependence. It studies dielectron production in Au+Au collisions at beam energies of 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV with sufficient statistics. In conjunc…
The first measurement of dielectron ($\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$) production in central (0$-$10$\%$) Pb-Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{\textit{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 2.76 TeV at the LHC is presented. The dielectron invariant-mass spectrum is compared to the expected contributions from hadron decays in the invariant-mass range $0 < m_{\mathrm{ee}}<3.5\ \mathrm{GeV}/\textit{c}^{2}$. The ratio of data and the cocktail of hadronic contributions without vacuum $ρ^{0}$ is measured in the invariant-mass range $0.15 < m_{\mathrm{ee}}<0.7\ \mathrm{GeV}/\textit{c}^{2}$, where an excess of dielectrons…
The exploration of the QCD phase diagram has been one of the main drivers of contemporary nuclear physics. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL is uniquely suited for this task through its Beam Energy Scan (BES) program which allowed for a large range in baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ as was successfully demonstrated after the completion of Phase 1 in 2014. Phase 2 of the BES at RHIC is scheduled to start in 2019 and will explore with precision measurements the intermediate-to-high $μ_B$ region of the QCD phase diagram, five energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ from 7.7 to 19.6 GeV in collid…
The measurement of dielectron production is presented as a function of invariant mass and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) at midrapidity ($|y_{\rm e}|<0.8$) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The contributions from light-hadron decays are calculated from their measured cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV or 13 TeV. The remaining continuum stems from correlated semileptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons. Fitting the data with templates from two different MC event generators, PYTHIA and POWHEG, the charm and beauty cross sections…
Low-mass dielectron measurements play an essential role in the study of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in all stages of the collision and are not affected by final-state interactions. Thus, they provide a penetrating probe of the created medium. In the dielectron intermediate-mass region a measurement of the thermal radiation from the QGP gives information on the medium temperature. However, in this region the main component of the dielectron continuum stems from correlated semi-leptonic decays of charm and beauty hadrons. The…
The measurement of the central exclusive production of charged hadron pairs $h^{+}h^{-}$ ($h = π, K, p$) by the STAR experiment at RHIC is reported. The data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV were used in this study. The pairs of charged hadrons produced in the reaction $pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime$ were reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons were measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections were measured in the fiducial region determined by the geometrical acceptance of the experimental setup. They…
We report the direct virtual photon invariant yields in the transverse momentum ranges $1\!<\!p_{T}\!<\!3$ GeV/$c$ and $5\!<\!p_T\!<\!10$ GeV/$c$ at mid-rapidity derived from the dielectron invariant mass continuum region $0.10<M_{ee}<0.28$ GeV/$c^{2}$ for 0-80\% minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. A clear excess in the invariant yield compared to the number-of-binary-collisions ($N_{bin}$) scaled $p+p$ reference is observed in the $p_T$ range $1\!<\!p_{T}\!<\!3$ GeV/$c$. For $p_T\!>6$ GeV/$c$ the production follows $N_{bin}$ scaling. Model calculations with contributions…
Dilepton and direct photon measurements in heavy ion collisions provide access to the early stages of the collision. Dilepton continuum measurements at SPS and RHIC show an excess consistent with broadening of the rho meson spectral function as a result of hadronic interactions. Direct photon measurements at RHIC and the LHC show an excess of low $p_{T}$ photons over the expected yield. This excess has a large azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the collision plane. Understanding the direct photon excess and its anisotropy has become an outstanding question in the field of heavy ion physics. …
We report on the measurement of the Central Exclusive Production of charged particle pairs $h^{+}h^{-}$ ($h = π, K, p$) with the STAR detector at RHIC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The charged particle pairs produced in the reaction $pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime$ are reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections are measured in the fiducial region, which roughly corresponds to the square of the four-momentum transfers at the proton vertices in the range $0…
The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $π^+π^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $π^+π^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $ρ$ and $ω$ resonances and a direct $π^+π^-$ continuum. This is the first observation of the $ω$ in ultra-peripheral collisions, and the first measurement of $ρ-ω$ interference at energies where photoproduction is dominated by Pomeron exchange. The $ω$ amplitude is consistent with …
We present an analysis of proton number fluctuations in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.4 GeV Au+Au collisions measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI. With the help of extensive detector simulations done with IQMD transport model events including nuclear clusters, various nuisance effects influencing the observed proton cumulants have been investigated. Acceptance and efficiency corrections have been applied as a function of fine grained rapidity and transverse momentum bins, as well as considering local track density dependencies. Next, the effects of volume changes with…
We report on measurements of sequential $Υ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) through both the dielectron and dimuon decay channels. In the 0-60% centrality class, the nuclear modification factors ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}$), which quantify the level of yield suppression in heavy-ion collisions compared to $p$+$p$ collisions, for $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) are $0.40 \pm 0.03~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.03~\textrm{(sys.)} \pm 0.09~\textrm{(norm.)}$ and $0.26 \pm 0.08~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.02~\textrm{(sys.)} \…
