We investigate systems of bosonic particles at zero temperature in triangular and hexagonal optical lattice potentials in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. Employing the process-chain approach, we obtain accurate values for the boundaries between the Mott insulating phase and the superfluid phase. These results can serve as reference data for both other approximation schemes and upcoming experiments. Since arbitrary integer filling factors g are amenable to our technique, we are able to monitor the behavior of the critical hopping parameters with increasing filling. We also demonstrate that the g-dependence of these exact parameters is described almost perfectly by a scaling relation inferred from the mean-field approximation.
Hexagonal optical lattices offer a tunable platform to study exotic orbital physics in solid state materials. Here, we present a versatile high-precision scheme to implement a hexagonal optical lattice potential, which is engineered by overlapping two independent triangular optical sublattices generated by laser beams with slightly different wavelengths around 1064 nm. This enables us to precisely control the detailed structure of the hexagonal lattice by adjusting the relative position and the relative lattice depth of the two triangular optical sublattices. Taking advantage of the sensitive …
We introduce a new numerical method for the solution of self-consistent equations in the cluster mean-field theory. The method uses the density matrix renormalization group method to solve the associated cluster problem. We obtain an accurate critical value of the supersolid-superfluid transitions in the hard-core bosonic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which is comparable with the recent quantum Monte Carlo results. This algorithm is applicable to more general classes of models with a larger number of degrees of freedom.
Recent experiments with ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms have shown that long-range interactions can give rise to spatially ordered structures. Observation of crystalline phases in a system with Rydberg atoms loaded into an optical lattice seems also within reach. Here we investigate a bosonic model on a triangular lattice suitable for description of such experiments. Numerical simulations based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory reveal a rich phase diagram with different supersolid phases. Comparison with the results obtained for a square lattice geometry shows qualitatively similar result…
We analytically study the ground-state phase diagrams of ultracold bosons with various values of the effective magnetic quantum number $m$ in a state-dependent hexagonal optical lattice by using the generalized effective-potential Landau theory, where the site-offset energy between the two triangular sublattice A and B is tunable. Our analytical calculations of third-order corrections are in reasonably good agreement with the previous cluster Gutzwiller calculations. Furthermore, we reveal the reason why the regions of the Mott lobes $(n,n)$ in phase diagrams for $m=0.02$ are unexpectedly expa…
In this paper, we study phase diagram of a system of two-component hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor (NN) pseudo-spin antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions in a stacked triangular lattice. Hamiltonian of the system contains three parameters one of which is the hopping amplitude $t$ between NN sites, and the other two are the NN pseudo-spin exchange interaction $J$ and the one that measures anisotropy of pseudo-spin interactions. We investigate the system by means of the Monte-Carlo simulations and clarify the low-temperature phase diagram. In particular, we are interested in how the competi…
We study the superfluid and insulating phases of interacting bosons on the triangular lattice with an inverted dispersion, corresponding to frustrated hopping between sites. The resulting single-particle dispersion has multiple minima at nonzero wavevectors in momentum space, in contrast to the unique zero-wavevector minimum of the unfrustrated problem. As a consequence, the superfluid phase is unstable against developing additonal chiral order that breaks time reversal (T) and parity (P) symmetries by forming a condensate at nonzero wavevector. We demonstrate that the loss of superfluidity ca…
Using a beyond-mean-field model including a Lee-Huang-Yang-type interaction, we demonstrate a supersolid-like spatially-periodic square- and triangular-lattice crystallization of droplets in a polarized dipolar condensate confined by an appropriate three-dimensional (3D) box trap. In this paper we consider a rectangular box (cuboid) trap, a square box (cuboid with two equal sides) trap, a cylindrical box trap and a hexagonal box (hexagonal prism) trap. The droplet lattice is always formed in the $x$-$y$ plane perpendicular to the polarization $z$ direction of dipolar atoms. In contrast to a ha…
We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a mixture of ultra-cold neutral bosons and fermions held on a hexagonal optical lattice. In the strong atom-atom interaction limit, composite fermions composed of one fermion with bosons or bosonic holes in the mixture are formed. Such composite fermions have already been generated successfully in experiment [Nat. Phys. {\bf 7}, 642 (2011)]. Here we predict that this kind of composite fermions may provide a realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect by tuning the atom-atom interaction or the filling of the bosons in the mixture. We also…
We study the ground-state properties of ultracold bosonic atoms in a state-dependent graphene-like honeycomb optical lattice, where the degeneracy between the two triangular sublattices A and B can be lifted. We discuss the various geometries accessible with this lattice setup and present a novel scheme to control the energy offset with external magnetic fields. The competition of the on-site interaction with the offset energy leads to Mott phases characterized by population imbalances between the sublattices. For the definition of an optimal Hubbard model, we demonstrate a scheme that allows …
We consider a two-dimensional homogeneous ensemble of cold bosonic atoms loaded inside two optical cavities and pumped by a far-detuned external laser field. We examine the conditions for these atoms to self-organize into triangular and honeycomb lattices as a result of superradiance. By collectively scattering the pump photons, the atoms feed the initially empty cavity modes. As a result, the superposition of the pump and cavity fields creates a space-periodic light-shift external potential and atoms self-organize into the potential wells of this optical lattice. Depending on the phase of the…
Multi-orbital optical lattices have been attracting rapidly growing research interests in the last several years, providing fascinating opportunities for orbital-based quantum simulations. Here, we consider bosonic atoms loaded in the degenerate $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional triangular optical lattice. This system is described by a multi-orbital Bose-Hubbard model. We find the confined atoms in this system develop spontaneous orbital polarization, which forms a chiral Skyrmion lattice pattern in a large regime of the phase diagram. This is in contrast to its spin analogue which largel…
We investigate the zero temperature quantum phases of a Bose-Bose mixture on a triangular lattice using Bosonic Dynamical Mean Field Theory (BDMFT). We consider the case of total filling one where geometric frustration arises for asymmetric hopping. We map out a rich ground state phase diagram including xy-ferromagnetic, spin-density wave, superfluid, and supersolid phases. In particular, we identify a stripe spin-density wave phase for highly asymmetric hopping. On top of the spin-density wave, we find that the system generically shows weak charge (particle) density wave order.
We report the persistence of magnetic domains lying in moiré patterns with square and hexagonal symmetries. Our investigation is based on the dynamical description of two magnetic domains represented by a two species bosonic mixture of $^{87}$Rb ultracold atoms, being each specie initially localized in the left and right halves of a moiré lattice defined by a specific angle $θ$. To demonstrate the persistence of such initial domains, we follow the time evolution of the superfluid spin texture, and in particular, the magnetization on each halve. The two-component superfluid, confined in the moi…
We consider interacting bosonic particles on a two-leg triangular ladder in the presence of an artificial gauge field. We employ density matrix renormalization group numerical simulations and analytical bosonization calculations to study the rich phase diagram of this system. We show that the interplay between the frustration induced by the triangular lattice geometry and the interactions gives rise to multiple chiral quantum phases. Phase transition between superfluid to Mott-insulating states occur, which can have Meissner or vortex character. Furthermore, a state that explicitly breaks the …
Over the last years the exciting developments in the field of ultracold atoms confined in optical lattices have led to numerous theoretical proposals devoted to the quantum simulation of problems e.g. known from condensed matter physics. Many of those ideas demand for experimental environments with non-cubic lattice geometries. In this paper we report on the implementation of a versatile three-beam lattice allowing for the generation of triangular as well as hexagonal optical lattices. As an important step the superfluid-Mott insulator (SF-MI) quantum phase transition has been observed and inv…
We study the many-body ground states of two-component hardcore bosons in topological triangular lattice models. Utilizing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we demonstrate that at commensurate two-thirds filling per lattice site, two-component bosonic integer quantum hall (BIQH) effect emerges with the associated $\mathbf{K}=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1\\ 1 & 0\\ \end{pmatrix}$ matrix under strong intercomponent Hubbard repulsion. The topological nature is further elucidated by (i) a unique ground state degeneracy with a robust spectrum gap, (ii) a quantized …
