In this paper, we propose a subnetwork decomposition/combination approach to investigate the single rate $2$-pair unicast problem. It is shown that the solvability of a $2$-pair unicast problem is completely determined by four specific link subsets, namely, $\mathcal A_{1,1}$, $\mathcal A_{2,2}$, $\mathcal A_{1,2}$ and $\mathcal A_{2,1}$ of its underlying network. As a result, an efficient cut-based algorithm to determine the solvability of a $2$-pair unicast problem is presented.
We consider the multiple unicast problem under network coding over directed acyclic networks when there are two source-terminal pairs, $s_1-t_1$ and $s_2-t_2$. Current characterizations of the multiple unicast capacity region in this setting have a large number of inequalities, which makes them hard to explicitly evaluate. In this work we consider a slightly different problem. We assume that we only know certain minimum cut values for the network, e.g., mincut$(S_i, T_j)$, where $S_i \subseteq \{s_1, s_2\}$ and $T_j \subseteq \{t_1, t_2\}$ for different subsets $S_i$ and $T_j$. Based on these …
We consider the question of determining the scaling of the $n^2$-dimensional balanced unicast and the $n 2^n$-dimensional balanced multicast capacity regions of a wireless network with $n$ nodes placed uniformly at random in a square region of area $n$ and communicating over Gaussian fading channels. We identify this scaling of both the balanced unicast and multicast capacity regions in terms of $Θ(n)$, out of $2^n$ total possible, cuts. These cuts only depend on the geometry of the locations of the source nodes and their destination nodes and the traffic demands between them, and thus can be …
Network coding is a new technique to transmit data through a network by letting the intermediate nodes combine the packets they receive. Given a network, the network coding solvability problem decides whether all the packets requested by the destinations can be transmitted. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to this problem. We define a closure operator on a digraph closely related to the network coding instance and we show that the constraints for network coding can all be expressed according to that closure operator. Thus, a solution for the network coding problem is equivalent to a …
This paper considers the problem of network coding for multiple unicast connections in networks represented by directed acyclic graphs. The concept of interference alignment, traditionally used in interference networks, is extended to analyze the performance of linear network coding in this setup and to provide a systematic code design approach. It is shown that, for a broad class of three-source three-destination unicast networks, a rate corresponding to half the individual source-destination min-cut is achievable via alignment strategies.
We study upper bounds on the sum-rate of multiple-unicasts. We approximate the Generalized Network Sharing Bound (GNS cut) of the multiple-unicasts network coding problem with $k$ independent sources. Our approximation algorithm runs in polynomial time and yields an upper bound on the joint source entropy rate, which is within an $O(\log^2 k)$ factor from the GNS cut. It further yields a vector-linear network code that achieves joint source entropy rate within an $O(\log^2 k)$ factor from the GNS cut, but \emph{not} with independent sources: the code induces a correlation pattern among the sou…
We consider the communication capacity of wireline networks for a two-unicast traffic pattern. The network has two sources and two destinations with each source communicating a message to its own destination, subject to the capacity constraints on the directed edges of the network. We propose a simple outer bound for the problem that we call the Generalized Network Sharing (GNS) bound. We show this bound is the tightest edge-cut bound for two-unicast networks and is tight in several bottleneck cases, though it is not tight in general. We also show that the problem of computing the GNS bound is…
We study the problem of communicating over a single-source single-terminal network in the presence of an adversary that may jam a single link of the network. If any one of the edges can be jammed, the capacity of such networks is well understood and follows directly from the connection between the minimum cut and maximum flow in single-source single- terminal networks. In this work we consider networks in which some edges cannot be jammed, and show that determining the network communication capacity is at least as hard as solving the multiple-unicast network coding problem for the error-free c…
In this paper, we study the wireline two-unicast-Z communication network over directed acyclic graphs. The two-unicast-Z network is a two-unicast network where the destination intending to decode the second message has apriori side information of the first message. We make three contributions in this paper: 1. We describe a new linear network coding algorithm for two-unicast-Z networks over directed acyclic graphs. Our approach includes the idea of interference alignment as one of its key ingredients. For graphs of a bounded degree, our algorithm has linear complexity in terms of the number of…
In this paper, we consider networks with multiple unicast sessions. Generally, non-linear network coding is needed to achieve the whole rate region of network coding. Yet, there exist networks for which routing is sufficient to achieve the whole rate region, and we refer to them as routing-optimal networks. We identify a class of routing-optimal networks, which we refer to as information-distributive networks, defined by three topological features. Due to these features, for each rate vector achieved by network coding, there is always a routing scheme such that it achieves the same rate vector…
We consider the problem of network coding across three unicast sessions over a directed acyclic graph, when each session has min-cut one. Previous work by Das et al. adapted a precoding-based interference alignment technique, originally developed for the wireless interference channel, specifically to this problem. We refer to this approach as precoding-based network alignment (PBNA). Similar to the wireless setting, PBNA asymptotically achieves half the minimum cut; different from the wireless setting, its feasibility depends on the graph structure. Das et al. provided a set of feasibility con…
A classical result in undirected wireline networks is the near optimality of routing (flow) for multiple-unicast traffic (multiple sources communicating independent messages to multiple destinations): the min cut upper bound is within a logarithmic factor of the number of sources of the max flow. In this paper we "extend" the wireline result to the wireless context. Our main result is the approximate optimality of a simple layering principle: {\em local physical-layer schemes combined with global routing}. We use the {\em reciprocity} of the wireless channel critically in this result. Our form…

The deterministic channel model for wireless relay networks proposed by Avestimehr, Diggavi and Tse `07 has captured the broadcast and inference nature of wireless communications and has been widely used in approximating the capacity of wireless relay networks. The authors generalized the max-flow min-cut theorem to the linear deterministic wireless relay networks and characterized the unicast capacity of such deterministic network as the minimum rank of all the binary adjacency matrices describing source-destination cuts whose number grows exponentially with the size of the network. In this p…
One of the important unsolved problems in information theory is the conjecture that network coding has no rate benefit over routing in undirected unicast networks. Three known bounds on the symmetric rate in undirected unicast information networks are the sparsest cut, the LP bound and the partition bound. In this paper, we present three results on the partition bound. We show that the decision version problem of computing the partition bound is NP-complete. We give complete proofs of optimal routing schemes for two classes of networks that attain the partition bound. Recently, the conjecture …
A long-standing open question in information theory is to characterize the unicast capacity of a wireless relay network. The difficulty arises due to the complex signal interactions induced in the network, since the wireless channel inherently broadcasts the signals and there is interference among transmissions. Recently, Avestimehr, Diggavi and Tse proposed a linear deterministic model that takes into account the shared nature of wireless channels, focusing on the signal interactions rather than the background noise. They generalized the min-cut max-flow theorem for graphs to networks of dete…
We investigate the two unicast flow problem over layered linear deterministic networks with arbitrary number of nodes. When the minimum cut value between each source-destination pair is constrained to be 1, it is obvious that the triangular rate region {(R_1,R_2):R_1,R_2> 0, R_1+R_2< 1} can be achieved, and that one cannot achieve beyond the square rate region {(R_1,R_2):R_1,R_2> 0, R_1< 1,R_2< 1}. Analogous to the work by Wang and Shroff for wired networks, we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the capacity region to be the triangular region and the necessary and sufficient c…
A new coding scheme for general N-node relay networks is presented for unicast, multicast, and broadcast. The proposed distributed decode-forward scheme combines and generalizes Marton coding for single-hop broadcast channels and the Cover-El Gamal partial decode-forward coding scheme for 3-node relay channels. The key idea of the scheme is to precode all the codewords of the entire network at the source by multicoding over multiple blocks. This encoding step allows these codewords to carry partial information of the messages implicitly without complicated rate splitting and routing. This part…
The work of Avestimehr et al. '07 has recently proposed a deterministic model for wireless networks and characterized the unicast capacity C of such networks as the minimum rank of the adjacency matrices describing all possible source-destination cuts. Amaudruz & Fragouli first proposed a polynomial-time algorithm for finding the unicast capacity of a linear deterministic wireless network in their 2009 paper. In this work, we improve upon Amaudruz & Fragouli's work and further reduce the computational complexity of the algorithm by fully exploring the useful combinatorial features intrinsic in…
A network of 3 nodes mutually communicating with each other is studied. This multi-way network is a suitable model for 3-user device-to-device communications. The main goal of this paper is to characterize the capacity region of the underlying Gaussian 3-way channel (3WC) within a constant gap. To this end, a capacity outer bound is derived using cut-set bounds and genie-aided bounds. For achievability, the 3WC is first transformed into an equivalent star-channel. This latter is then decomposed into a set of `successive' sub-channels, leading to a sub-channel allocation problem. Using backward…
The capacity (or maximum flow) of an unicast network is known to be equal to the minimum s-t cut capacity due to the max-flow min-cut theorem. If the topology of a network (or link capacities) is dynamically changing or unknown, it is not so trivial to predict statistical properties on the maximum flow of the network. In this paper, we present a probabilistic analysis for evaluating the accumulate distribution of the minimum s-t cut capacity on random graphs. The graph ensemble treated in this paper consists of weighted graphs with arbitrary specified degree distribution. The main contribution…
We present a new outer bound for the sum capacity of general multi-unicast deterministic networks. Intuitively, this bound can be understood as applying the cut-set bound to concatenated copies of the original network with a special restriction on the allowed transmit signal distributions. We first study applications to finite-field networks, where we obtain a general outer-bound expression in terms of ranks of the transfer matrices. We then show that, even though our outer bound is for deterministic networks, a recent result relating the capacity of AWGN KxKxK networks and the capacity of a d…
In this paper, a compress-and-forward scheme with backward decoding is presented for the unicast wireless relay network. The encoding at the source and relay is a generalization of the noisy network coding scheme (NNC). While it achieves the same reliable data rate as noisy network coding scheme, the backward decoding allows for a better decoding complexity as compared to the joint decoding of the NNC scheme. Characterizing the layered decoding scheme is shown to be equivalent to characterizing an information flow for the wireless network. A node-flow for a graph with bisubmodular capacity con…
The paper presents four distinct new ideas and results for communication networks: 1) We show that relay-networks (i.e. communication networks where different nodes use the same coding functions) can be used to model dynamic networks. 2) We introduce {\em the term model}, which is a simple, graph-free symbolic approach to communication networks. 3) We state and prove variants of a theorem concerning the dispersion of information in single-receiver communications. 4) We show that the solvability of an abstract multi-user communication problem is equivalent to the solvability of a single-target …
The deterministic wireless relay network model, introduced by Avestimehr et al., has been proposed for approximating Gaussian relay networks. This model, known as the ADT network model, takes into account the broadcast nature of wireless medium and interference. Avestimehr et al. showed that the Min-cut Max-flow theorem holds in the ADT network. In this paper, we show that the ADT network model can be described within the algebraic network coding framework introduced by Koetter and Medard. We prove that the ADT network problem can be captured by a single matrix, called the "system matrix". We …
Consider an acyclic directed network $G$ with sources $S_1, S_2,..., S_l$ and distinct sinks $R_1, R_2,..., R_l$. For $i=1, 2,..., l$, let $c_i$ denote the min-cut between $S_i$ and $R_i$. Then, by Menger's theorem, there exists a group of $c_i$ edge-disjoint paths from $S_i$ to $R_i$, which will be referred to as a group of Menger's paths from $S_i$ to $R_i$ in this paper. Although within the same group they are edge-disjoint, the Menger's paths from different groups may have to merge with each other. It is known that by choosing Menger's paths appropriately, the number of mergings among diff…
