A quantum state is called concordant if it has zero quantum discord with respect to any part. By extension, a concordant computation is one such that the state of the computer, at each time step, is concordant. In this paper, I describe a classical algorithm that, given a product state as input, permits the efficient simulation of any concordant quantum computation having a conventional form and composed of gates acting on two or fewer qubits. This shows that such a quantum computation must generate quantum discord if it is to efficiently solve a problem that requires super-polynomial time classically. While I employ the restriction to two-qubit gates sparingly, a crucial component of the simulation algorithm appears not to be extensible to gates acting on higher-dimensional systems.
We introduce an open-source software library Graphix, which optimizes and simulates measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). By combining the measurement calculus with an efficient graph state simulator, Graphix allows the classical preprocessing of Pauli measurements in the measurement patterns, significantly reducing the number of operations required to perform the quantum computation while maintaining determinism. For a measurement pattern translated from a quantum circuit, this corresponds to the preprocessing of all Clifford gates, and this improvement in the one-way model is importa…
Due to complexity of the systems and processes it addresses, the development of computational quantum physics is influenced by the progress in computing technology. Here we overview the evolution, from the late 1980s to the current year 2020, of the algorithms used to simulate dynamics of quantum systems. We put the emphasis on implementation aspects and computational resource scaling with the model size and propagation time. Our mini-review is based on a literature survey and our experience in implementing different types of algorithms.
Many developing quantum technologies make use of quantum networks of different types. Even linear quantum networks are nontrivial, as the output photon distributions can be exponentially complex. Despite this, they can still be computationally simulated. The methods used are transformations into equivalent phase-space representations, which can then be treated probabilistically. This provides an exceptionally useful tool for the prediction and validation of experimental results, including decoherence. As well as experiments in Gaussian boson sampling, which are intended to demonstrate quantum …
Hybrid quantum-classical (HQC) algorithms make it possible to use near-term quantum devices supported by classical computational resources by useful control schemes. In this paper, we develop an HQC algorithm using an efficient variational optimization approach to simulate open system dynamics under the Noisy-Intermediate Scale Quantum(NISQ) computer. Using the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) method and extending it to McLachlan TDVP for density matrix which involves minimization of Frobenius norm of the error, we apply the unitary quantum circuit to obtain the time evolution of th…
Noise dominates every aspect of near-term quantum computers, rendering it exceedingly difficult to carry out even small computations. In this paper we are concerned with the modelling of noise in Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers. We focus on three error groups that represent the main sources of noise during a computation and present quantum channels that model each source. We engineer a noise model that combines all three noise channels and simulates the evolution of the quantum computer using its calibrated error rates. We run various experiments of our model, showcasing its …

We establish a classical heuristic algorithm for exactly computing quantum probability amplitudes. Our algorithm is based on mapping output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits to evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of graphic matroids. The algorithm evaluates the Tutte polynomial recursively using the deletion-contraction property while attempting to exploit structural properties of the matroid. We consider several variations of our algorithm and present experimental results comparing their performance on two classes of random quantum circuits. Further, we obtain an explicit form for Cl…
Feynmans ideas to employ quantum systems for simulating other quantum systems gave rise to quantum simulation. While current quantum computers are still prone to decoherence and rely on error correction, the development of hybrid algorithms that employ both quantumand classical computation allow to perform quantum simulation. Among these algorithms, the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm has permitted to explore the electronic structure of simple atoms and molecules by exploiting the Rayleigh Ritz variational principle. In this work we provide the implementation of the VQE algorithm for…
We propose a general tensor network method for simulating quantum circuits. The method is massively more efficient in computing a large number of correlated bitstring amplitudes and probabilities than existing methods. As an application, we study the sampling problem of Google's Sycamore circuits, which are believed to be beyond the reach of classical supercomputers and have been used to demonstrate quantum supremacy. Using our method, employing a small computational cluster containing 60 graphical processing units (GPUs), we have generated one million correlated bitstrings with some entries f…
