We discuss recent results on spectral properties of discrete alloy-type random Schrödinger operators. They concern Wegner estimates and bounds on the fractional moments of the Green's function.
We consider discrete random Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2 (\mathbb{Z}^d)$ with a potential of discrete alloy-type structure. That is, the potential at lattice site $x \in \mathbb{Z}^d$ is given by a linear combination of independent identically distributed random variables, possibly with sign-changing coefficients. In a first part we show that the discrete alloy-type model is not uniformly $τ$-Hölder continuous, a frequently used condition in the literature of Anderson-type models with general random potentials. In a second part we review recent results on regularity properties of spectral …
We review recent results on localization for discrete alloy-type models based on the multiscale analysis and the fractional moment method, respectively. The discrete alloy-type model is a family of Schrödinger operators $H_ω= - Δ+ V_ω$ on $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V_ω$ the multiplication by the function $V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k u(x-k)$. Here $ω_k$, $k \in \ZZ^d$, are i.i.d. random variables and $u \in \ell^1 (\ZZ^d ; \RR)$ is a so-called single-site potential. Since $u$ may change sign, certain properties of $H_ω$ depend in a non-monotone way on the rand…
We consider a family of self-adjoint operators [H_ω= - Δ+ λV_ω, \quad ω\in Ω= \bigtimes_{k \in \ZZ^d} \RR,] on the Hilbert space $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ or $L^2 (\RR^d)$. Here $Δ$ denotes the Laplace operator (discrete or continuous), $V_ω$ is a multiplication operator given by the function $$V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k u(x-k) on $\ZZ^d$, or \quad V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k U(x-k) on $\RR^d$,$$ and $λ> 0$ is a real parameter modeling the strength of the disorder present in the model. The functions $u:\ZZ^d \to \RR$ and $U:\RR^d \to \RR$ are called single-site potential. Moreover, there is a …
We study discrete alloy-type random Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. If the single site potential is compactly supported and the distribution of the coupling constant is of bounded variation a Wegner estimate holds. The bound is polynomial in the volume of the box and thus applicable as an ingredient for a localisation proof via multiscale analysis.
We consider discrete periodic operator on $\mathbb Z^d$ with respect to lattices $Γ\subset\mathbb Z^d$ of full rank. We describe the class of lattices $Γ$ for which the operator may have a spectral gap for arbitrarily small potentials. We also show that, for a large class of lattices, the dimensions of the level sets of spectral band functions at the band edges do not exceed $d-2$.
We study location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with complex $\ell^{p}$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. In the case of $\ell^{1}$-potentials, the derived bound is shown to be optimal. For $p>1$, two different spectral bounds are obtained. The method relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle and various techniques for estimations of the norm of the Birman-Schwinger operator.
We report on recent results on the spectral statistics of the discrete Anderson model in the localized phase. Our results show, in particular, that, for the discrete Anderson Hamiltonian with smoothly distributed random potential at sufficiently large coupling, the limit of the level spacing distribution is that of i.i.d. random variables distributed according to the density of states of the random Hamiltonian. This text is a contribution to the proceedings of the conference "Spectra of Random Operators and Related Topics" held at Kyoto University, 02-04/12/09 organized by N. Minami and N. Uek…
The Schroedinger equation on the half line is considered with a real-valued, integrable potential having a finite first moment. It is shown that the potential and the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by the data containing the discrete eigenvalues for a boundary condition at the origin, the continuous part of the spectral measure for that boundary condition, and a subset of the discrete eigenvalues for a different boundary condition. This result extends the celebrated two-spectrum uniqueness theorem of Borg and Marchenko to the case where there is also a continuous spectrum
Let $H_0$ be a purely absolutely continuous selfadjoint operator acting on some separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and $V$ be a compact non-selfadjoint perturbation. We relate the regularity properties of $V$ to various spectral properties of the perturbed operator $H_0+V$. The structure of the discrete spectrum and the embedded eigenvalues are analysed jointly with the existence of limiting absorption principles in a unified framework. Our results are based on a suitable combination of complex scaling techniques, resonance theory and positive commutators methods. Various results sca…
We consider a family of one frequency discrete analytic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators which appear in [Bjer]. We show that this family provides an example of coexistence of absolutely continuous and point spectrum for some parameters as well as coexistence of absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectrum for some other parameters.
We show a norm convergence result for the Laplacian on a class of post-critically finite fractals with arbitrary Borel regular probability measure which can be approximated by a sequence of finite-dimensional graph Laplacians with corresponding discrete probability measures. As a consequence other functions of the Laplacians (heat operator, spectral projections etc.) converge as well in operator norm. One also deduces convergence of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions in energy norm.

For an arbitrary Hermitian period-$T$ Jacobi operator, we assume a perturbation by a Wigner-von Neumann type potential to devise subordinate solutions to the formal spectral equation for a (possibly infinite) real set, $S$, of the spectral parameter. We employ discrete Levinson type techniques to achieve this, which allow the analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. This enables us to construct infinitely many spectral singularities on the absolutely continuous spectrum of the periodic Jacobi operator, which are stable with respect to an $l^1$-perturbation. An analogue of the quan…
The aim of this article is to give a simple geometric condition that guarantees the existence of spectral gaps of the discrete Laplacian on periodic graphs. For proving this, we analyse the discrete magnetic Laplacian (DML) on the finite quotient and interpret the vector potential as a Floquet parameter. We develop a procedure of virtualising edges and vertices that produces matrices whose eigenvalues (written in ascending order and counting multiplicities) specify the bracketing intervals where the spectrum of the Laplacian is localised. We prove Higuchi-Shirai's conjecture for Z-periodic tre…
Our goal in this paper is to find an estimate for the spectral gap of the Laplacian on a 2-simplicial complex consisting on a triangulation of a complete graph. An upper estimate is given by generalizing the Cheeger constant. The lower estimate is obtained from the first non-zero eigenvalue of the discrete Laplacian acting on the functions of certain sub-graphs.
In this paper, a discrete form of the Kato inequality for discrete magnetic Laplacians on graphs is used to study asymptotic properties of the spectrum of discrete magnetic Schrodinger operators. We use the existence of a ground state with suitable properties for the ordinary combinatorial Laplacian and semigroup domination to relate the combinatorial Laplacian with the discrete magnetic Laplacian.
We consider a discrete Schroedinger operator whose potential is the sum of a Wigner-von Neumann term and a summable term. The essential spectrum of this operator equals to the interval [-2,2]. Inside this interval, there are two critical points where eigenvalues may be situated. We prove that, generically, the spectral density of the operator has zeroes of the power type at these points.
We study perturbations of the discrete Laplacian associated to discrete analogs of cusps and funnels. We perturb the metric and the potential in a long-range way. We establish a propagation estimate and a Limiting Absorption Principle away from the possible embedded eigenvalues. The approach is based on a positive commutator technique.
For Riemannian submersions, we establish some estimates for the spectrum of the total space in terms of the spectrum of the base space and the geometry of the fibers. In particular, for Riemannian submersions of complete manifolds with closed fibers of bounded mean curvature, we show that the spectrum of the base space is discrete if and only if the spectrum of the total space is discrete.
We study discrete Schroedinger operators with compactly supported potentials on the square lattice. Constructing spectral representations and representing S-matrices by the generalized eigenfunctions, we show that the potential is uniquely reconstructed from the S-matrix of all energies. We also study the spectral shift function for the trace class potentials, and estimate the discrete spectrum in terms of the moments of the spectral shift function and the potential.
We consider the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of discrete tori which approximate the m-dimensional torus. In the special case m=1, Friedli and Karlsson derived an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding spectral zeta function in the critical strip, as the approximation parameter goes to infinity. There, the authors have also formulated a conjecture on this asymptotics, that is equivalent to the Riemann conjecture. In this paper, inspired by the work of Friedli and Karlsson, we prove that a similar asymptotic expansion holds for m=2. Similar argument applies to higher dimensions as we…
We consider Toeplitz operators associated with the renormalized Bochner-Laplacian on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a compact symplectic manifold. We study the asymptotic behavior, in the semiclassical limit, of low-lying eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint Toeplitz operator under assumption that its principal symbol has a non-degenerate minimum with discrete wells. As an application, we prove upper bounds for low-lying eigenvalues of the Bochner-Laplacian in the semiclassical limit.
Given a measure $m$ on the real line or a finite interval, the "cubic string" is the third order ODE $-ϕ'''=zmϕ$ where $z$ is a spectral parameter. If equipped with Dirichlet-like boundary conditions this is a nonselfadjoint boundary value problem which has recently been shown to have a connection to the Degasperis-Procesi nonlinear water wave equation. In this paper we study the spectral and inverse spectral problem for the case of Neumann-like boundary conditions which appear in a high-frequency limit of the Degasperis--Procesi equation. We solve the spectral and inverse spectral problem for…
