Topological or deconfined phases of matter exhibit emergent gauge fields and quasiparticles that carry a corresponding gauge charge. In systems with an intrinsic conserved U(1) charge, such as all electronic systems where the Coulombic charge plays this role, these quasiparticles are also characterized by their intrinsic charge. We show that one can take advantage of the topological order fairly generally to produce periodic Hamiltonians which endow the quasiparticles with continuously variable, generically irrational, intrinsic charges. Examples include various topologically ordered lattice models, the three dimensional RVB liquid on bipartite lattices as well as water and spin ice. By contrast, the gauge charges of the quasiparticles retain their quantized values.
Topological properties of energy spectra of general one-dimensional quasiperiodic systems, describing also Bloch electrons in magnetic fields, are studied for an infinity of irrational modulation frequencies corresponding to irrational numbers of flux quanta per unit cell. These frequencies include well-known ones considered in works on Fibonacci quasicrystals. It is shown that the spectrum for any such frequency exhibits a self-similar hierarchy of clusters characterized by universal (system-independent) values of Chern topological integers which are exactly determined. The cluster hierarchy …

The spin ice compounds {\dys} and {\holm} are highly unusual magnets which epitomize a set of concepts of great interest in modern condensed matter physics: their low-energy physics exhibits an emergent gauge field and their excitations are magnetic monopoles which arise from the fractionalization of the microscopic magnetic spin degrees of freedom. In this review, we provide an elementary introduction to these concepts and we survey the thermodynamics, statics and dynamics---in and out of equilibrium---of spin ice from these vantage points. Along the way, we touch on topics such as emergent C…
A charged entanglement entropy is a new measure which probes quantum entanglement between different charge sectors. We study symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in 2+1 dimensional space-time by using this charged entanglement entropy. SPT phases are short range entangled states without topological order and hence cannot be detected by the topological entanglement entropy. We demonstrate that the universal part of the charged entanglement entropy is non-zero for non-trivial SPT phases and therefore it is a useful measure to detect short range entangled topological phases. We also discus…
We address the question of different representation of Bloch states for lattices with a basis, with a focus on topological systems. The representations differ in the relative phase of the Wannier functions corresponding to the diffferent basis members. We show that the phase can be chosen in such a way that the Wannier functions for the different sites in the basis both become eigenstates of the position operator in a particular band. A key step in showing this is the extension of the Brillouin zone. When the distance between sites within a unit cell is a rational number, $p/q$, the Brillouin …
We discuss a current dynamics on the surface of a 3-dimensional topological insulator induced by magnetization precession of a ferromagnet attached. It is found that the magnetization dynamics generates a direct charge current when the precession axis is within the surface plane. This rectification effect is due to a quantum anomaly and is topologically protected. The robustness of the rectification effect against first-varying exchange field and impurities is confirmed by explicit calculation.
We provide a systematic study of non-Hermitian topologically charged systems. Starting from a Hermitian Hamiltonian supporting Weyl points with arbitrary topological charge, adding a non-Hermitian perturbation transforms the Weyl points to one-dimensional exceptional contours. We analytical prove that the topological charge is preserved on the exceptional contours. In contrast to Hermitian systems, the addition of gain and loss allows for a new class of topological phase transition: when two oppositely charged exceptional contours touch, the topological charge can dissipate without opening a g…
In this paper, we found a new type of insulator - composite spin liquid which can be regarded as a short range B-type topological spin-density-wave. Composite spin liquid is topological ordered state beyond the classification of traditional spin liquid states. The elementary excitations are the "composite electrons" with both spin degree of freedom and charge degree of freedom, together with topological spin texture. This topological state supports chiral edge mode but no topological degeneracy.
We show that (3+1)-dimensional topological phases of matter generically support loop excitations with topological degeneracy. The loops carry "Cheshire charge": topological charge that is not the integral of a locally-defined topological charge density. Cheshire charge has previously been discussed in non-Abelian gauge theories, but we show that it is a generic feature of all (3+1)-D topological phases (even those constructed from an Abelian gauge group). Indeed, Cheshire charge is closely related to non-trivial three-loop braiding. We use a dimensional reduction argument to compute the topolo…
We propose a generic scheme to characterize topological phases via detecting topological charges by quench dynamics. A topological charge is defined as the chirality of a monopole at Dirac or Weyl point of spin-orbit field, and topological phases can be classified by total charges in the region enclosed by the so-called band-inversion surfaces (BISs). We show that both the topological monopoles and BISs can be identified by non-equilibrium spin dynamics caused by a sequence of quenches. From an emergent dynamical field given by time-averaged spin textures, the topological charges, as well as t…
We present a theory on the quantum phase diagram of AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation performed in the plane-wave basis, motivated by the observation of topological states in this system. At filling factor $ν=2$ (two holes per moiré unit cell), Coulomb interaction can stabilize a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator by opening a charge gap. At $ν=1$, the interaction induces three classes of competing states, spin density wave states, an in-plane ferromagnetic state, and a valley polarized state, which undergo first-order phase transitions tuned by an …
We investigate a second-order topological quantum transition of a modified Kane-Mele model driven by electron-phonon interaction. The results show that the system parameters of the bare modified Kane-Mele model are renormalized by the electron-phonon interaction. Starting from the second-order topological phase for the bare model, the increasing electron-phonon coupling strength can drive the second-order topological insulator into a semimetal phase. Such a secondorder topological phase transition is characterized by the band-gap closing, discontinuity of averaged ferminoic number and topologi…
Haldane model is a noninteracting model for spinless fermions showing nontrivial topological properties. Effect of the electron-electron interaction on the topological phase poses an intriguing question. By means of the Hartree-Fock mean field, the exact diagonalization and the constrained-path Monte Carlo methods we mapped out the phase diagram of the interacting Haldane model. It is found that interaction breaks down the topological phase and drives the system into the charge-density-wave state. Sequence of the two transitions depends on the strength of next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Many-bo…
In the framework of the Cartan classification of Hamiltonians, a kind of topological classification of Fermi surfaces is established in terms of topological charges. The topological charge of a Fermi surface depends on its codimension and the class to which its Hamiltonian belongs. It is revealed that six types of topological charges exist, and they form two groups with respect to the chiral symmetry, with each group consisting of one original charge and two descendants. It is these nontrivial topological charges which lead to the robust topological protection of the corresponding Fermi surfac…
Based on a topological transition of the symmetry protected topological phase (SPT), an interaction induced topological charge pump (iTCP) is proposed with the symmetry breaking parameter as a synthetic dimension. It implies that the phase boundary of the SPT is the topological obstruction although iTCP and the gap closing singularity is stable for symmetry breaking perturbations. We have confirmed the bulk-edge correspondence for this iTCP using DMRG for the Rice-Mele model with nearest-neighbor interactions. As for a realization in optical lattices, an interaction sweeping pump protocol is p…
