Elemental bismuth provides a rare opportunity to explore the fate of a three-dimensional gas of highly mobile electrons confined to their lowest Landau level. Coulomb interaction, neglected in the band picture, is expected to become significant in this extreme quantum limit with poorly understood consequences. Here, we present a study of the angular-dependent Nernst effect in bismuth, which establishes the existence of ultraquantum field scales on top of its complex single-particle spectrum. Each time a Landau level crosses the Fermi level, the Nernst response sharply peaks. All such peaks are resolved by the experiment and their complex angular-dependence is in very good agreement with the theory. Beyond the quantum limit, we resolve additional Nernst peaks signaling a cascade of additional Landau sub-levels caused by electron interaction.
The Landau spectrum of bismuth is complex and includes many angle-dependent lines in the extreme quantum limit. The adequacy of single-particle theory to describe this spectrum in detail has been an open issue. Here, we present a study of angle-resolved Nernst effect in bismuth, which maps the angle-resolved Landau spectrum for the entire solid angle up to 28 T. The experimental map is in good agreement with the results of a theoretical model with parabolic dispersion for holes and an extended Dirac Hamiltonian for electrons. The angular dependence of additional lines in the Landau spectrum al…
We develop a theory describing a parameter based phase diagram to be associated with materials incorporating skipped valence ions\cite{Varma}. We use a recently developed tight-binding approach for the bismuthates to study the phase diagram exhibiting the crossover from a bond disproportionated (BD) to a charge disproportionated (CD) system in addition to the presence of a new metallic phase. We argue that three parameters determine the underlying physics of the BD-CD crossover when electron correlation effects are small: the hybridization between O-2$p_σ$ and Bi-6$s$ orbitals ($t_{spσ}$), the…
Several decades after the discovery of superconductivity in bismuthates, the strength of their electron-phonon coupling and its evolution with doping remain puzzling. To clarify these issues, polycrystalline hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ ($0.1 \le x \le 0.6$) samples were systematically synthesized and their bulk- and microscopic superconducting properties were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR), respectively. The phase diagram of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ was reliably extended up to $x = 0.6$, which is still found to be a bulk super…
Electrons are offered a valley degree of freedom in presence of particular lattice structures. Manipulating valley degeneracy is the subject matter of an emerging field of investigation, mostly focused on charge transport in graphene. In bulk bismuth, electrons are known to present a threefold valley degeneracy and a Dirac dispersion in each valley. Here we show that because of their huge in-plane mass anisotropy, a flow of Dirac electrons along the trigonal axis is extremely sensitive to the orientation of in-plane magnetic field. Thus, a rotatable magnetic field can be used as a valley valve…
Recently, Prakash et. al. have discovered bulk superconductivity in single crystals of bismuth, which is a semi metal with extremely low carrier density. At such low density, we argue that conventional electron-phonon coupling is too weak to be responsible for the binding of electrons into Cooper pairs. We study a dynamically screened Coulomb interaction with effective attraction generated on the scale of the collective plasma modes. We model the electronic states in bismuth to include three Dirac pockets with high velocity and one hole pocket with a significantly smaller velocity. We find a w…
Bismuth perovskites ABiO$_3$ (A = Sr, Ba) host a variety of peculiar phenomena including bond-disproportionated insulating phases and high-temperature superconductivity upon hole doping. While the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are still debated, off-diagonal electron-phonon ($e$-ph) coupling originating from the modulation of the orbital overlaps has emerged as a promising candidate. Here, we employ classical Monte Carlo simulations to study a semiclassical three-orbital model with off-diagonal $e$-ph interactions. We demonstrate the existence of a (bi)polaron correlations that persist…
With the aim to reveal universal features of hadronic matter and correlated Dirac insulators in strong AC-electric fields, we study the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with a finite quark mass driven by a rotating electric field $\mathcal{E}_x+i\mathcal{E}_y= E e^{iΩt}$. The analysis is done in the holographically dual D3/D7 system in the co-rotating frame, effectively. The nonequilibrium phase diagram is determined from the threshold electric field at which the insulator phase breaks down to a conductive phase due to the AC version of the Schwinger mechanism. The external field induces a r…
Motivated by the intriguing properties of the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)2 under pressure, with a still debated intermediate plaquette phase appearing at around 20 kbar and a possible deconfined critical point at higher pressure upon entering the antiferromagnetic phase, we have investigated its high-field properties in this pressure range using tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurements. The two main new phases revealed by these measurements are fully consistent with those identified by infinite Projected Entangled Pair states (iPEPS) calculations of the Shastry-Sutherland model, a…
Using novel instrumentation to combine extreme conditions of intense pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T and high pressure up to 4~GPa, we have established the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field - pressure - temperature phase diagram of a pure stoichiometric heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (CeRh$_2$Si$_2$). We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range…
The Condon domain phase diagram for beryllium is determined in magnetic fields up to 10 T and at temperatures down to 1.3 K using a standard ac pick-up coil method to measure the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. The detection of the transition point from the homogeneous state to the Condon domain state (CDS) is based on the extremely non-linear response to the modulation field resulting from a small irreversibility in the dHvA magnetization. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions calculated from the Fermi surface (FS) of beryllium. The width h_m of the hysteresis l…
We present the Condon domain phase diagram for a silver single crystal measured in magnetic fields up to 28 T and temperatures down to 1.3 K. A standard ac method with a pickup coil system is used at low frequency for the measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect (dHvA). The transition point from the state of homogeneous magnetization to the inhomogeneous Condon domain state (CDS) is found as the point where a small irreversibility in the dHvA magnetization arises, as manifested by an extremely nonlinear response in the pickup voltage showing threshold character. The third harmonic content…
The strong coupling phase diagram of the spinless fermions on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half-filling is presented. The geometry of inter-site Coulomb interactions rules the phase diagram. Unconventional charge ordered phases are detected which are the recently reported pinball liquid and the striped chains. Both are induced by the quantum dynamics out of classical disordered states and afford extremely correlated metallic states and the particular domain wall-type of excitations, respectively. The disorder once killed by the quantum effect revives at the finite temperature, which i…
The structure of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ solid solutions (x=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.67, 1) under high pressure (up to 40-45 GPa) has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) in order to characterize their volume \emph{vs.} pressure (P-V) equation of state. All the members of the solid solution, except the extreme compounds: LaMnO$_3$ and CaMnO$_{3}$, present low pressure orthorhombic P$nma$ phase evolving toward an high pressure tetragonal (I$4/mcm$) symmetry. The details of this transition are related to the Ca doping: on increasing the Ca content, the critical pressure of…
Spin-orbital entanglement in quantum spin-orbital systems is quantified by a reduced von Neumann entropy, and is calculated for the ground state of a coupled spin-orbital chain with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ symmetry. By analyzing the discontinuity and local extreme of the reduced entropy as functions of the model parameters, we deduce a rich phase diagram to describe the quantum phase transitions in the model. Our approach provides an efficient and powerful method to identify phase boundaries in a system with complex correlation between multiply degrees of freedom.
Perturbative corrections to the mean field theory for particle-hole instabilities of interacting electron systems are computed within a scheme which is equivalent to the recently developed variational approach to the Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity. This enables an unbiased comparison of particle-particle and particle-hole instabilities within the same approximation scheme. A spin-rotation invariant formulation for the particle-hole instabilities in the triplet channel is developed. The method is applied to the phase diagram of the t-t' Hubbard model on the square lattice. At the Van Hove den…
Recently there has been a resurgence of intense experimental and theoretical interest on the Kondo physics of nanoscopic and mesoscopic systems due to the possibility of making experiments in extremely small samples. We have carried out exact diagonalization calculations to study the effect of the energy spacing $Δ$ of the conduction band on the ground-state properties of a dense Anderson model nanochain. The calculations reveal for the first time that the energy spacing tunes the interplay between the Kondo and RKKY interactions, giving rise to a zero-temperature $Δ$ versus hybridization phas…
We show that the topological Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice is extremely fragile against the second-neighbor Kitaev coupling $K_2$, which has recently been shown to be the dominant perturbation away from the nearest-neighbor model in iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$, and may also play a role in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$. This coupling naturally explains the zigzag ordering (without introducing unrealistically large longer-range Heisenberg exchange terms) and the special entanglement between real and spin space observed recently in Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Moreover, the minimal $K_1$-$K_2$ model t…
We report a thorough theoretical study of the low temperature phase diagram of Cs_2CuCl_4, a spatially anisotropic spin S=1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet, in a magnetic field. Our results, obtained in a quasi-one-dimensional limit in which the system is regarded as a set of weakly coupled Heisenberg chains, are in excellent agreement with experiment. The analysis reveals some surprising physics. First, we find that, when the magnetic field is oriented within the triangular layer, spins are actually most strongly correlated within planes perpendicular to the triangular layers. This is de…
