We extend the concept of galaxy environment from the local galaxy number density to the gravitational potential and its functions like the shear tensor. For this purpose we examine whether or not one can make an accurate estimation of the gravitational potential from an observational sample which is finite in volume, biased due to galaxy biasing, and subject to redshift space distortion. Dark halos in a $Λ$CDM simulation are used in this test. We find that one needs to stay away from the sample boundaries by more than 30$h^{-1}$Mpc to reduce the error within 20% of the root mean square values of the potential or the shear tensor. The error due to the galaxy biasing can be significantly reduced by using the galaxy mass density field instead of the galaxy number density field. The error caused by the redshift space distortion can be effectively removed by correcting galaxy positions for the peculiar velocity effects. We inspect the dependence of dark matter halo properties on four environmental parameters; local density, gravitational potential, and the ellipticity and prolateness of the shear tensor. We find the local density has the strongest correlation with halo properties. This is evidence that the internal physical properties of dark halos are mainly controlled by small-scale physics. In high density regions dark halos are on average more massive and spherical, and have higher spin parameter and velocity dispersion. In high density regions dark halos are on average more massive and spherical, and have higher spin parameter and velocity dispersion. We also study the relation between the environmental parameters and the subtypes of dark halos. The spin parameter of satellite halos depends only weakly on the local density for all mass ranges studied while that of isloated or central halos depends more sensitively on the local density. Gravitational waves astronomy has opened a new opportunity to study the Universe. Full exploitation of this window can especially be provided by combining data coming from gravitational waves experiments with luminous tracers of the Large Scale Structure, like galaxies. In this work we investigate the cross-correlation signal between gravitational waves resolved events, as detected by the Einstein Telescope, and actively star-forming galaxies. The galaxies distribution is computed through their UV and IR luminosity functions and the gravitational waves events, assumed to be of stellar origin, …
Evaluation of gravitational theories by means of cosmological data suffers from the fact that galaxies are biased tracers of dark matter. Current bias models focus primarily on high-density regions, whereas low-density regions carry significant amounts of information relevant to the constraint of dark energy and alternative gravity theories. Thus, proper treatment of both high and low densities is important for future surveys. Accordingly, we here present an interactionless Ising model for this bias, and we demonstrate that it exhibits a remarkably good fit to both Millennium Simulation and Sl…
The CASSOWARY spectroscopy survey: A new sample of gravitationally lensed galaxies in SDSS
19.6<r <22.3. We present a brief source-by-source discussion of the spectroscopic properties extracted from our confirmatory spectra and discuss some initial science results. With mo…
Data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Sources (SPIDERS) are searched for a detection of the gravitational redshifting of light from $\sim\!20\,000$ galaxies in $\sim\!2500$ galaxy clusters using three definitions of the cluster centre: its Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG), the redMaPPer identified Central Galaxy (CG), or the peak of X-ray emission. Distributions of velocity offsets between galaxies and their host cluster's centre, found using observed redshifts, are created. The quantity $\hatΔ$, the average of the radial velocity difference between the cluster members and the cl…
The low-redshift velocity field is a unique probe of the growth of cosmic structure and gravity. We propose to use distances from gravitational wave (GW) detections, in conjunction with the redshifts of their host galaxies from wide field spectroscopic surveys (e.g. DESI, 4MOST, TAIPAN), to measure peculiar motions within the local Universe. Such measurement has the potential to constrain the growth rate $fσ_8$ and test gravity through determination of the gravitational growth index $γ$, complementing constraints from other peculiar velocity measurements. We find that binary neutron star merge…
We detect weak gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at the location of the WISExSCOS (WxS) galaxies using the publicly available Planck lensing convergence map. By stacking the lensing convergence map at the position of 12.4 million galaxies in the redshift range $0.1\le z \le 0.345$, we find the average mass of the galaxies to be M$_{200_{\rm crit}}$ = 6.25 $\pm$ 0.6 $\times 10^{12}\ M_{\odot}$. The null hypothesis of no-lensing is rejected at a significance of $17σ$. We split the galaxy sample into three redshift slices each containing $\sim$4.1 million objects and …
We propose a novel approach to accurately pin down the systematics due to the peculiar velocities of galaxies in measuring the Hubble constant from nearby galaxies in current and future gravitational-wave (GW) standard-siren experiments. Given the precision that future GW standard-siren experiments aim to achieve, the peculiar velocities of nearby galaxies will be a major source of uncertainty. Unlike the conventional backward reconstruction that requires additional redshift-independent distance indicators to recover the peculiar velocity field, we forwardly model the peculiar velocity field b…
Gravitational redshift as a relativistic effect in cosmological objects is investigated. Possible signatures of the gravitational redshift in measurements of satellite galaxies in clusters of galaxies, intracluster gas, as well as galaxies associated with voids are investigated by developing simple theoretical models. In the analysis of the gravitational redshift of satellite galaxies, we develop a very simple analytic model for satellite galaxies virialised in halos, which enables us to evaluate the signals depending on the properties of the halo occupation distribution of galaxies. We obtain…
We investigate the merging rates of compact binaries in galaxies, and the related detection rate of gravitational wave (GW) events with AdvLIGO/Virgo and with the Einstein Telescope. To this purpose, we rely on three basic ingredients: (i) the redshift-dependent galaxy statistics provided by the latest determination of the star formation rate functions from UV+far-IR/(sub)millimeter/radio data; (ii) star formation and chemical enrichment histories for individual galaxies, modeled on the basis of observations; (iii) compact remnant mass distribution and prescriptions for merging of compact bina…
I show that gravitational scattering of dark-matter objects of 10^4 solar masses and speeds of 10 km/s, provides the cross-section per unit mass required in self-interacting dark matter models that alleviate the small-scale structure challenges to the collisionless cold dark matter model. For primordial objects of mass 10^4*(M_4) solar masses, moving at the velocity dispersion characteristic of dwarf galaxies, 10*(v_1) km/s, the cross-section per unit mass for gravitational scattering is 10*[M_4/(v_1)^4] cm^2/g. The steep decline in interaction with increasing velocity explains why self-intera…
It has been suggested that the gravitational potential can have a significant role in suppressing the star formation in the nearby galaxies. To establish observational constrains on this scenario, we investigate the connection between the dynamics, through the circular velocity curves (CVCs) as a proxy of the inner gravitational potential, and star formation quenching in 215 non-active galaxies across Hubble sequence from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. Our results show that galaxies with similar CVCs tend to have a certain star-formation quenching pattern. To explor…
We use the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation GALFORM to characterise an indirect signature of AGN feedback in the environment of radio galaxies at high redshifts. The predicted environment of radio galaxies is denser than that of radio-quiet galaxies with the same stellar mass. This is consistent with observational results from the CARLA survey. Our model shows that the differences in environment are due to radio galaxies being hosted by dark matter haloes that are ~1.5 dex more massive than those hosting radio-quiet galaxies with the same stellar mass. By running a control-simulation …
We present GLADE+, an extended version of the GLADE galaxy catalogue introduced in our previous paper for multimessenger searches with advanced gravitational-wave detectors. GLADE+ combines data from six separate but not independent astronomical catalogues: the GWGC, 2MPZ, 2MASS XSC, HyperLEDA, and WISExSCOSPZ galaxy catalogues, and the SDSS-DR16Q quasar catalogue. To allow corrections of CMB-frame redshifts for peculiar motions, we calculated peculiar velocities along with their standard deviations of all galaxies having $B$-band magnitude data within redshift $z=0.05$ using the "Bayesian Ori…
