We carry out the molecular statics simulations of depinning of an edge dislocation at voids of diameters of the order of ~1 nm. We show that the dislocation-void interactions are non-trivial as the applied shear load is found to enhance the pinning strength of the nanovoid itself. This leads to the surprising observation of multiple CRSS values for a given nanovoid.
Quantitative behaviors of shock-induced dislocation nucleation are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations on fcc Lennard-Jones solids: a model Argon. In perfect crystals, it is found that Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) is a linearly decreasing function of temperature: from near-zero to melting temperatures. In a defective crystal with a void, dislocations are found to nucleate on the void surface. Also HEL drastically decreases to 15 percent of the perfect crystal when a void radius is 3.4 nanometer. The decrease of HEL becomes larger as the void radius increases, but HEL become…
Interactions between an edge dislocation and a void in copper are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. The depinning stresses of the leading partial and of the trailing partial show qualitatively different behaviors. The depinning stress of the trailing partial increases logarithmically with the void radius, while that of the leading partial shows a crossover at 1 nm above which two partials are simultaneously trapped by the void. The pinning angle, which characterizes the obstacle strength, approaches zero when the void radius exceeds 3 nm. No temperature dependence is foun…
We clarify via molecular dynamic simulations and theoretical analysis the origin of dislocation creation and void nucleation during uniaxial tensile process in face-centered-cubic (FCC) ductile metals. We show that the dislocations are created through three distinguished stages: (i) Flattened octahedral structures (FOSs) are randomly activated by thermal fluctuations; (ii) The double-layer defect clusters are formed by self-organized stacking of FOSs on the close-packed plane; (iii) The stacking faults surrounded by the Shockley partial dislocations are created from the double-layer defect clu…
Pinning interaction between a screw dislocation and a void in fcc copper is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. A screw dislocation bows out to undergo depinning on the original glide plane at low temperatures, where the behavior of the depinning stress is consistent with that obtained by a continuum model. If the temperature is higher than 300 K, the motion of a screw dislocation is no longer restricted to a single glide plane due to cross slip on the void surface. Several depinning mechanisms that involve multiple glide planes are found. In particular, a depinning mechani…
We employ the methods of atomistic simulation to investigate the climb of edge dislocation at nanovoids by analyzing the energetics of the underlying mechanism. A novel simulation strategy has been demonstrated to estimate the release of surface energy of the nanovoid during the void induced climb. The curvature of the pinned dislocation segment is found to play a key role in mediating this unique mechanism of dislocation climb. Our study reveals that the kinetics of void-induced climb process is fundamentally distinct from the conventional diffusion-mediated climb.
A predictive model for the evolution of porous Ge layer upon thermal treatment is reported. We represent an idealized etched dislocation core as an axially symmetric elongated hole and computed its dynamics during annealing. Numerical simulations of the shape change of a completely spherical void via surface diffusion have been performed. Simulations and experiments show individual large spherical voids, aligned along the dislocation core. The creation of voids could facilitate interactions between dislocations, enabling the dislocation network to change its connectivity in a way that facilita…
The process of fracture in ductile metals involves the nucleation, growth, and linking of voids. This process takes place both at the low rates involved in typical engineering applications and at the high rates associated with dynamic fracture processes such as spallation. Here we study the growth of a void in a single crystal at high rates using molecular dynamics (MD) based on Finnis-Sinclair interatomic potentials for the body-centred cubic (bcc) metals V, Nb, Mo, Ta, and W. The use of the Finnis-Sinclair potential enables the study of plasticity associated with void growth at the atomic le…
The interaction between edge dislocations and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded into an Al matrix is investigated. Both pristine and Ni-coated CNTs are considered. It is demonstrated that the embedded CNTs lead to a flow stress contribution equivalent to that of an array of non-shearable inclusions that are by-passed via the Orowan mechanism. The strain hardening mechanism associated with multiple dislocation passes shows, however, characteristic differences from the Orowan picture that indicate that the embedded CNTs behave analogous to embedded voids.
Ni-based superalloy Inconel-718 is ubiquitous in metal 3D printing where high cooling rate and thermal gradient are present. These manufacturing conditions are conducive to high initial dislocation density and porosity or void in the material. This work proposes a molecular dynamics (MD) analysis method that can examine the role of dislocations, cooling rates, void, and their interactions governing the material properties and failure mechanism in Inconel-718 using Embedded Atom Method (EAM) potential. Three different structures: nanowire (NW), nanopillar, and nanoplate are used throughout this…
Ductile failure is studied in a bcc HfNbTaZr High Entropy Alloy (HEA) with a pre-existing void. Using molecular dynamics simulations of uniaxial tensile tests, we explore the effect of void radius on the elastic modulus and yield stress. The elastic modulus scales with porosity as in closed-cell foams. The critical stress for dislocation nucleation as a function of the void radius is very well described by a model designed after pure bcc metals, taking into account a larger core radius for the HEA. Twinning takes place as a complementary deformation mechanism, and some detwinning occurs at lar…
Pinning of dislocations at nanosized obstacles like precipitates, voids and bubbles, is a crucial mechanism in the context of phenomena like hardening and creep. The interaction between such an obstacle and a dislocation is often explored at fundamental level by means of analytical tools, atomistic simulations and finite element methods. Nevertheless, the information extracted from such studies has not been utilized to its maximum extent on account of insufficient information about the underlying statistics of this process comprising a large number of dislocations and obstacles in a system. He…
From their birth in the manufacturing process, materials inherently contain defects that affect the mechanical behavior across multiple length and time-scales, including vacancies, dislocations, voids and cracks. Understanding, modeling, and real-time simulation of the underlying stochastic micro-structure defect evolution is therefore vital towards multi-scale coupling and propagating numerous sources of uncertainty from atomistic to eventually aging continuum mechanics. We develop a graph-based surrogate model of dislocation glide for computation of dislocation mobility. We model an edge dis…
We report results of large-scale molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of dynamic deformation under biaxial tensile strain of pre-strained single-crystalline nanometer-scale-thick face-centered cubic (fcc) copper films. Our results show that stacking faults, which are abundantly present in fcc metals, may play a significant role in the dissociation, cross-slip, and eventual annihilation of dislocations in small-volume structures of fcc metals. The underlying mechanisms are mediated by interactions within and between extended dislocations that lead to annihilation of Shockley partial dislocations…
In this paper we present experimental data of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation obtained in a high purity crystalline sample of cooper hydrogenated by gaseous charge. The sample is oriented in the <111> crystallographic direction and aged for this work in three stages between 64 and 97 days. The results indicate that the hydrogen is mainly segregated at the dislocation core, inhibiting the Hydrogen Snoek-Köster relaxations verified at earlier aging stages. Despite of this, a contribution to viscosity in the kink-chain resonance is provided by the mobile hydrogen in the dislocations core by i…
The mechanical properties of Mg-Al alloys are greatly influenced by the complex intermetallic phase Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$, which is the most dominant precipitate found in this alloy system. The interaction of basal edge and 30$^\text{o}$ dislocations with Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitates is studied by molecular dynamics and statics simulations, varying the inter-precipitate spacing ($L$), and size ($D$), shape and orientation of the precipitates. The critical resolved shear stress $τ_c$ to pass an array of precipitates follows the usual $\ln((1/D + 1/L)^{-1})$ proportionality. In all cases but the…
The presence and evolution of defects that appear in the manufacturing process play a vital role in the failure mechanisms of engineering materials. In particular, the collective behavior of dislocation dynamics at the mesoscale leads to avalanche, strain bursts, intermittent energy spikes, and nonlocal interactions producing anomalous features across different time- and length-scales, directly affecting plasticity, void and crack nucleation. Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) simulations are often used at the meso-level, but the cost and complexity increase dramatically with simulation time.…
We present systematic investigations on the shock responses of nanoporous aluminum (np-Al) by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The dislocation nucleation sites are found to concentrate in low latitude region near the equator of the spherical void surfaces. We propose a continuum wave reflection theory and a resolved shear stress model to explain the distribution of dislocation nucleation sites. The simulations reveals two mechanisms of void collapse: the plasticity mechanism and the internal jetting mechanism. The plasticity mechanism, which leads to transverse collapse of voids,…
A recently presented model is adapted to predict the effects of strain path change on the strain aging (bake hardening) behaviour of an ultra low carbon (ULC) steel. Samples pre-deformed by rolling were aged and then tested in uniaxial tension at 0, 45 and 90$^\circ$ degrees to the prior rolling direction. The results show that aging changes not only the yield strength of the material but also the work hardening rate. The increase in yield strength is interpreted to be dominated by a reduction in mobile dislocation density, this reflecting the classic ideas of Hahn and others. The change in wo…

We present a computational study of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in amorphous silicon ($a$-Si) with particular emphasis on the morphology and microstructure of voids. The relationship between the scattering intensity in SAXS and the three-dimensional structure of nanoscale inhomogeneities or voids is addressed by generating ultra-large high-quality $a$-Si networks with 0.1-0.3% volume concentration of voids, as observed in experiments using SAXS and positron annihilation spectroscopy. A systematic study of the variation of the scattering intensity in the small-angle scattering region wi…
