The cumulative luminosity distribution functions (CLFs) of radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in globular clusters (GCs) and in the Galactic field at a frequency of 1.4 GHz have been examined. Assuming a functional form, $N \propto L^q$ where $N$ is the number of MSPs and $L$ is the luminosity at 1.4 GHz, it is found that the CLFs significantly differ with a steeper slope, $q=-0.83 \pm 0.05$, in GCs than in the Galactic field ($q=-0.48 \pm 0.04$), suggesting a different formation or evolutionary history of MSPs in these two regions of the Galaxy. To probe the production mechanism of MSPs in clusters, a search of the possible relationships between the MSP population and cluster properties was carried out. The results of an investigation of 9 GCs indicate positive correlations between the MSP population and the stellar encounter rate and metallicity. This provides additional evidence suggesting that stellar dynamical interactions are important in the formation of the MSP population in GCs.
We construct a relativistic model for the newly discovered millisecond pulsar PSR J0514 - 4002A located in the globular cluster NGC 1851 (A. Ridolfi, P.C.C. Freire, Y. Gupta, S.M. Ransom, MNRAS 490, 3860 (2019)) by using Tolman VII spacetime. We have obtained central density ($ρ_{0}$), central pressure ($p_{0}$), probable radius, compactness ($u$) and surface redshift ($Z_{s}$) of the above mentioned newly discovered millisecond pulsar, which is very much consistent with reported data. Equation of State (EoS) of the millisecond pulsar has comes out as stiff in nature which is physically accept…
This chapter provides a phenomenological appraisal of the high-energy emission of millisecond pulsars. We comment on some of their properties as a population, as well as consider the especial cases of transitional pulsars, other redbacks, and black widow systems.
A simple and natural explanation for the minimum period of millisecond pulsars follows from a correlation between the accretion rate and the frozen surface dipole magnetic field resulting from Ohmic diffusion through the neutron star crust in initial stages of accretion in low mass X-ray binaries.
Millisecond pulsars in tight binaries have recently opened new challenges in our understanding of physical processes governing the evolution of binaries and the interaction between astrophysical plasma and electromagnetic fields. Transitional systems that showed changes from rotation-powered to accretion powered states and vice versa have bridged the populations of radio and accreting millisecond pulsars, eventually demonstrating the tight evolutionary link envisaged by the recycling scenario. A decade of discoveries and theoretical efforts have just grasped the complex phenomenology of transi…
Constraining the Bulk Properties of Dense Matter by Measuring Millisecond Pulsar Masses - A White Paper for the Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, CFP Panel
We summarize the state of the art and future directions in using millisecond radio pulsars to test gravitation and measure intrinsic, fundamental parameters of the pulsar systems. As discussed below, such measurements continue to yield high-impact constraints on viable nuclear processes that govern the theoretically-elusive interior of neutron stars, and place the most stringent limits on the validity of general relativity in extreme environments. Ongoing and planned pulsar-timing measurements provide the greatest opportunities for measurements of compact-object masses and new general-relativi…
We report optical modulation of the companion to the X-ray source U18 in the globular cluster NGC 6397. U18, with combined evidence from radio and X-ray measurements, is a strong candidate as the second redback in this cluster, initially missed in pulsar searches. This object is a bright variable star with an anomalous red color and optical variability (\sim 0.2 mag in amplitude) with a periodicity \sim 1.96 days that can be interpreted as the orbital period. This value corresponds to the longest orbital period for known redback candidates and confirmed systems in Galactic globular clusters an…
We investigate the spin dynamics of a millisecond pulsar (MSP) in compact orbit around a Kerr-like massive black hole with an general mass quadrupole. We use the Mathisson-Papetrou-Dixon formulation to compute the orbital and spin evolution of the MSP, accounting for the non-linear interaction of the pulsar's energy-momentum tensor on the background spacetime metric. We investigate how the MSP spin and BH quadrupole moment manifest in the pulsar spin-orbital dynamics. We discuss the astrophysical observational implications of these spin and orbital dynamics on the timing of a radio pulsar in a…
In this paper we present a coherent timing analysis of the 401 Hz pulsations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2019 outburst. Using observations collected with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), we establish the pulsar spin frequency and orbital phase during its latest epoch. We find that the 2019 outburst shows a pronounced evolution in pulse phase over the course of the outburst. These phase shifts are found to correlate with the source flux, and are interpreted in terms of hot-spot drift on the stellar surface, driven by changes in th…
Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. When mass transfer is much reduced or ceases altogether, pulsed emission generated by particle acceleration in the magnetosphere and powered by the rotation of the neutron star is observed, prefer…
Observations of short-duration gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows show that a good fraction (perhaps $\gtrsim50\%$) of binary neutron star mergers lead to strongly magnetized, rapidly rotating pulsars (including millisecond magnetars), no matter whether the pulsar remnants are short- or long-lived. Such compact objects are very likely to have significant radial oscillations and high interior temperatures, as indicated in recent numerical simulations. In this paper, we have investigated rotation-induced gravitational radiation from possibly existing, radially oscillating pulsars after binary…
The maximum mass of a neutron star has important implications across multiple research fields, including astrophysics, nuclear physics and gravitational wave astronomy. Compact binary millisecond pulsars (with orbital periods shorter than about a day) are a rapidly-growing pulsar population, and provide a good opportunity to search for the most massive neutron stars. Applying a new method to measure the velocity of both sides of the companion star, we previously found that the compact binary millisecond pulsar PSR J2215+5135 hosts one of the most massive neutron stars known to date, with a mas…
We report on gamma-ray orbital modulation of the transitioning millisecond pulsar binary XSS J12270-4859 detected in the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data. We use long-term optical data taken with the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor and the Swift UltraViolet Optical Telescope to inspect radio timing solutions that are limited to relatively short time intervals, and find that extrapolation of the solutions aligns well the phasing of the optical data over 15 years. The Fermi-LAT data folded on the timing solutions exhibit significant modulation (p = 5x10^-6) with a gamma-ray minimum at the inferi…
This paper investigates the progenitors of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) with a distribution of long orbital periods (P_orb > 2 d), to show the link between white dwarf (WD) binaries and long orbits for some binary MSPs through the Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of a WD. For this purpose, a model is presented to turn binary MSPs into wide binaries and highly circular orbits (e < 0.1) through the asymmetric kick imparted to the pulsar during the AIC process, which may indicate a sizeable kick velocity along the rotation of the proto-neutron star. The results show the effects of shock wave, bindi…
The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey: VII. Timing of four millisecond pulsars and the underlying spin period distribution of the Galactic millisecond pulsar population
It is believed that millisecond pulsars attain their fast spins by accreting matter and angular momentum from companion stars. Theoretical modelling of the accretion process suggests a spin-up line in the period-period derivative ($P$-$\dot{P}$) diagram of millisecond pulsars, which plays an important role in population studies of radio millisecond pulsars and accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries. Here we present observational evidence for such a spin-up line using a sample of 143 radio pulsars with $P$ < 30 ms. We also find that PSRs~J1823$-$3021A and J1824$-$2452A, located near the clas…
We present the discovery of 24 pulsars in 15 Globular Clusters (GCs) using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). These include the first pulsar discoveries in M2, M10, and M14. Most of the new systems are either confirmed or likely members of binary systems. M53C, NGC6517H and I are the only three pulsars confirmed to be isolated. M14A is a black widow pulsar with an orbital period of 5.5 hours and a minimum companion mass of 0.016 \Ms. M14E is an eclipsing binary pulsar with an orbital period of 20.3 hours. With the other 8 discoveries that have been reported elsew…
In this paper, we have investigated the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, which are rapidly rotating neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries. These systems show coherent X-ray pulsations that arise when the accretion flow is magnetically channeled to the stellar surface. Here, we have developed the fundamental equations for an accretion disc around accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars in the presence of a dynamo generated magnetic fields in the inner part of the disc and we have also formulated the numerical method for the structure equations in the inner region of the disc and the highest …
Globular clusters may host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) at their centres. Here we propose a new method for their identification using millisecond pulsars (MSPs) as probes. We show that measuring the first (jerk) and second (jounce) derivatives of the accelerations of an ensemble of MSPs will let us infer the presence of an IMBH in a globular cluster better than measuring the sole accelerations. We test this concept by simulating a set of star clusters with and without a central IMBH to extract the distributions of the stellar jerks and jounces. We then apply this technique to the ense…
