We present high-resolution 345 GHz interferometric observations of two extreme luminous (L_{IR}>10^{13} L_sun), submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS field with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Both targets were previously detected as unresolved point-sources by the SMA in its compact configuration, also at 345 GHz. These new data, which provide a factor of ~3 improvement in resolution, allow us to measure the physical scale of the far-infrared in the submillimetre directly. The visibility functions of both targets show significant evidence for structure on 0.5-1 arcsec scales, which at z=1.5 translates into a physical scale of 5-8 kpc. Our results are consistent with the angular and physical scales of two comparably luminous objects with high-resolution SMA followup, as well as radio continuum and CO sizes. These relatively compact sizes (<5-10 kpc) argue strongly for merger-driven starbursts, rather than extended gas-rich disks, as the preferred channel for forming SMGs. For the most luminous objects, the derived sizes may also have important physical consequences; under a series of simplifying assumptions, we find that these two objects in particular are forming stars close to or at the Eddington limit for a starburst.
It is widely believed that ultraluminous infrared (IR) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity are triggered by galaxy interactions and merging, with the peak of activity occurring at z~2, where submillimetre galaxies are thousands of times more numerous than local ULIRGs. In this evolutionary picture, submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) would host an AGN, which would eventually grow a black hole (BH) strong enough to blow off all of the gas and dust leaving an optically luminous QSO. To probe this evolutionary sequence we have focussed on the 'missing link' sources, which demonstrate bot…
Using the observed submillimetre source counts, from 250-1200 microns (including the most recent 250, 350 and 500 micron counts from BLAST), we present a model capable of reproducing these results, which is used as a basis to make predictions for upcoming surveys with the SPIRE instrument aboard the Herschel Space Observatory. The model successfully fits both the integral and differential source counts of submillimetre galaxies in all wavebands, predicting that while ultra-luminous infrared galaxies dominate at the brightest flux densities, the bulk of the infrared background is due to the les…
We analyse subarcsecond resolution interferometric CO line data for twelve sub-millimetre-luminous (S850um > 5mJy) galaxies with redshifts between 1 and 3, presenting new data for four of them. Morphologically and kinematically most of the twelve systems appear to be major mergers. Five of them are well-resolved binary systems, and seven are compact or poorly resolved. Of the four binary systems for which mass measurements for both separate components can be made, all have mass ratios of 1:3 or closer. Furthermore, comparison of the ratio of compact to binary systems with that observed in loca…
We present tentative H-alpha emission line detections of four submillimetre-detected galaxies at z>3.5: the radio galaxies 8C1909+722 and 4C60.07 at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of 3.1 and 2.5, and two submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs) near the first of these at SNRs of 10.0 and 2.4, made with the AKARI Space Telescope as part of the FUHYU mission program. These are the highest-redshift H-alpha detections in such galaxies, made possible by AKARI's unique near-infrared spectroscopic capability. The two radio galaxies had known redshifts and surrounding structure, and we have detected broa…
Submillimetre-luminous galaxies at high-redshift are the most luminous, heavily star-forming galaxies in the Universe, and are characterised by prodigious emission in the far-infrared at 850 microns (S850 > 5 mJy). They reside in halos ~ 10^13Msun, have low gas fractions compared to main sequence disks at a comparable redshift, trace complex environments, and are not easily observable at optical wavelengths. Their physical origin remains unclear. Simulations have been able to form galaxies with the requisite luminosities, but have otherwise been unable to simultaneously match the stellar masse…
Many theoretical models require powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to suppress star formation in distant galaxies and reproduce the observed properties of today's massive galaxies. A recent study based on Herschel-SPIRE submillimetre observations claimed to provide direct support for this picture, reporting a significant decrease in the mean star-formation rates (SFRs) of the most luminous AGNs (Lx>10^44 erg/s) at z=1-3 in the Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N). In this letter we extend these results using Herschel-SPIRE 250um data in the COSMOS and CDF-S fields to achieve an order of magnit…
We study the role of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the galaxy formation process in the Lambda Cold Dark Matter cosmology. We use the Baugh et al. (2005) semi-analytical model, which matches the observed SMG number counts and redshift distribution by assuming a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) in bursts triggered by galaxy mergers. We build galaxy merger trees and follow the evolution and properties of SMGs and their descendants. Our primary sample of model SMGs consists of galaxies which had 850 mu fluxes brighter than 5 mJy at some redshift z>1. Our model predicts that the present-day…
Over the last decade observations at submillimetre (submm) and millimetre (mm) wavelengths, with their unique ability to trace molecular gas and dust, have attained a central role in our exploration of galaxies at all redshifts. Due to the limited sensitivities and angular resolutions of current submm/mm telescopes, however, only the most luminous objects have been uncovered at high redshifts, with interferometric follow-up observations succeeding in resolving the dust and gas reservoirs in only a handful of cases. The coming years will witness a drastic improvement in the current situation, t…
We combine the GALFORM semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, which predicts the star formation and merger histories of galaxies, the GRASIL spectro-photometric code, which calculates the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies self-consistently including reprocessing of radiation by dust, and artificial neural networks (ANN), to investigate the clustering properties of galaxies selected by their emission at submillimetre wavelengths (SMGs). We use the Millennium Simulation to predict the spatial and angular distribution of SMGs. At redshift z = 2, we find that these galaxies are …
In recent work (arXiv:1101.0002) we have suggested that the high-redshift (z ~ 2-4) bright submillimetre galaxy (SMG) population is heterogeneous, with major mergers contributing both at early stages, where quiescently star-forming discs are blended into one submm source (`galaxy-pair SMGs'), and late stages, where mutual tidal torques drive gas inflows and cause strong starbursts. Here we combine hydrodynamic simulations of major mergers with 3-D dust radiative transfer calculations to determine observational diagnostics that can distinguish between quiescently star-forming SMGs and starburst…
We present continent-scale VLBI - obtained with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at a wavelength of 18cm - of six distant, luminous submm-selected galaxies (SMGs). Our images have a synthesized beam width of ~30 milliarcsec FWHM - three orders of magnitude smaller in area than the highest resolution VLA imaging at this wavelength - and are capable of separating radio emission from ultra-compact radio cores (associated with active super-massive black holes - SMBHs) from that due to starburst activity. Despite targeting compact sources - as judged by earlier observations with the VLA and MERLIN -…
We have made a careful selection of a large complete volume-limited sample (1209) of projected close pairs (7<r_p<50 kpc) of luminous early-type galaxies (M_r<-21.5) in the local universe (z<0.12) from the SDSS data. 249 (21%) of them show interaction features, which suggests that about 0.8% of the galaxies are merging. We derived a comoving volume merger rate of ~(1.0+/-0.4)\times 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} Gyr^{-1} for luminous early-type galaxies. This is a direct observational determination of the merger rate of luminous galaxies in the local universe. We also obtained the chirp mass distribution of…
Using multiwavelength surveys of active galactic nuclei across a wide range of bolometric luminosities (10^{43}<L_{bol}(erg/s<5x10^{46}) and redshifts (0<z<3), we find a strong, redshift-independent correlation between the AGN luminosity and the fraction of host galaxies undergoing a major merger. That is, only the most luminous AGN phases are connected to major mergers, while less luminous AGN appear to be driven by secular processes. Combining this trend with AGN luminosity functions to assess the overall cosmic growth of black holes, we find that ~50% by mass is associated with major merger…
We study a sample of 61 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected from ground-based surveys, with known spectroscopic redshifts and observed with Herschel as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) key programmes. We use the broad far-infrared wavelength coverage (100-600um) provided by the combination of PACS and SPIRE observations. Using a power-law temperature distribution model to derive infrared luminosities and dust temperatures, we measure a dust emissivity spectral index for SMGs of beta=2.0+/-0.2. Our results unveil the divers…
We investigate the fraction of starbursts, starburst-AGN composites, Seyferts, and LINERs as a function of infrared luminosity (L_IR) and merger progress for ~500 infrared-selected galaxies. Using the new optical classifications afforded by the extremely large data set of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we find that the fraction of LINERs in IR-selected samples is rare (< 5%) compared with other spectral types. The lack of strong infrared emission in LINERs is consistent with recent optical studies suggesting that LINERs contain AGN with lower accretion rates than in Seyfert galaxies. Most previ…
We investigate the contribution made by active galactic nuclei (AGN) to the high-redshift, luminous, submillimetre (submm) source population using deep (< 2 mJy/beam) Large Apex Bolometer Camera (LABOCA) 870 um observations within the William Herschel Deep Field (WHDF). This submm data complements previously obtained Chandra X-ray data of the field, from which AGN have been identified with the aid of follow-up optical spectra. From the LABOCA data, we detect 11 submm sources (based on a detection threshold of 3.2 sigma) with estimated fluxes of > 3 mJy/beam. Of the 11 identified submm sources,…
We present a submillimetre survey of seven high-z galaxy clusters (0.64<z<1.0) using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at 850 and 450 um. The targets, of similar richness and redshift, are selected from the Red-sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). We use this sample to investigate the apparent excess of submillimetre source counts in the direction of cluster fields compared to blank fields. The sample consists of three galaxy clusters that exhibit multiple optical arcs due to strong gravitational lensing, and a control group of four clusters with no apparent strong lensing. A ten…
We present a spectroscopic catalogue of 40 luminous starburst galaxies at z=0.7--1.7 (median z=1.3). 19 of these are submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and 21 are submillimetre-faint radio galaxies (SFRGs). This sample helps to fill in the redshift desert at z=1.2--1.7 in previous studies as well as probing a lower luminosity population of galaxies. Radio fluxes are used to determine star-formation rates for our sample which range from around 50 to 500 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and are generally lower than those in z$\sim$2 SMGs. We identify nebular [OII] 3727 emission in the rest-UV spectra and use the …
High-redshift submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most rapidly star-forming galaxies in the Universe. Historically, galaxy formation models have had difficulty explaining the observed number counts of SMGs. We combine a semi-empirical model with 3-D hydrodynamical simulations and 3-D dust radiative transfer to predict the number counts of unlensed SMGs. Because the stellar mass functions, gas and dust masses, and sizes of our galaxies are constrained to match observations, we can isolate uncertainties related to the dynamical evolution of galaxy mergers and the dust radiative transfe…
We introduce a novel technique for empirically understanding galaxy evolution. We use empirically determined stellar evolution models to predict the past evolution of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-II) Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample without any a-priori assumption about galaxy evolution. By carefully contrasting the evolution of the predicted and observed number and luminosity densities we test the passive evolution scenario for galaxies of different luminosity, and determine minimum merger rates. We find that the LRG population is not purely coeval, with some of galaxies targeted at z<0…
Mergers in the local universe present a unique opportunity for studying the transformations of galaxies in detail. Presented here are recent results, based on multi-wavelength, high-resolution imaging and medium resolution spectroscopy, which demonstrate how star-formation and the presence of Red Supergiants and/or Asymptotic Giant Branch stars has lead to a serious underestimation of the dynamical masses of infrared-bright galaxies. The dominance of a nuclear disk of young stars in the near-infrared bands, where dust obscuration does not block their signatures, can severely bias the global pr…
We present a merger-driven evolutionary model for the production of luminous (LIRGs) and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with warm IR colours. Our results show that simulations of gas--rich major mergers including star formation, black hole growth, and feedback can produce warm (U)LIRGs. We also find that while the warm evolutionary phase is associated with increased AGN activity, star formation alone may be sufficient to produce warm IR colours. However, the transition can be suppressed entirely - even when there is a significant AGN contribution - when we assume a single-phase ISM, …
Luminous infrared galaxies ($L_{\rm{IR}}>10^{11} L_{\odot}$) are often associated with interacting galactic systems and are thought to be powered by merger--induced starbursts and/or dust--enshrouded AGN. In such systems, the evolution of the dense, star forming molecular gas as a function of merger separation is of particular interest. Here, we present observations of the CO(3-2) emission from a sample of luminous infrared galaxy mergers that span a range of galaxy-galaxy separations. The excitation of the molecular gas is studied by examining the CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) line ratio, $r_{31}$, as a fu…
We report on new sensitive CO J=6-5 line observations of several luminous infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: L$_{\rm IR}$(8-1000$μ$m$)\ga 10^{11}$ L$_{\odot}$), 36% (8/22) of them ULIRGs (L$_{\rm IR}$$>10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$), and two powerful local AGN: the optically luminous QSO PG 1119+120, and the powerful radio galaxy 3C 293 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. We combine these observations with existing low-J CO data and dust emission Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) in the far-infrared - submillimetre from the literature to constrain the properties of the star…
[abridged] We present interferometric CO observations of twelve z~2 submillimetre-faint, star-forming radio galaxies (SFRGs) which are thought to be ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) possibly dominated by warmer dust (T_dust ~> 40 K) than submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) of similar luminosities. Four other CO-observed SFRGs are included from the literature, and all observations are taken at the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) in the compact configuration. Ten of the sixteen SFRGs observed in CO (63%) are detected at >4sigma with a mean inferred molecular gas mass of ~2*10^10 M_sun. S…
We present deep, intermediate resolution, long slit Gemini GMOS-S optical spectra of the SDSS type II quasar J002531-104022, which is a highly disturbed system currently undergoing a major merger event. We use these data to model the ages and reddenings of the stellar populations in three distinct spatial regions and find a remarkable uniformity in the properties of the young stellar populations (YSP) that dominate the optical spectra. The YSPs are all found to have relatively young ages (tysp < 40$ Myr), strongly implying that the latest episode of star formation and quasar activity have been…
I present recent high-resolution submillimeter and millimeter observations of molecular gas and dust in some mergers, luminous galaxy nuclei, and possible mergers. Such observations tell us the behavior and properties of interstellar medium in merger nuclei. For example, the gas sometimes makes a mini disk around the remnant nucleus, feeds starburst and/or a massive black hole there, hides such a power source(s) by enveloping it, and is blown out by the embedded power source. Even when the power source is completely enveloped and hidden we can still constrain its physical parameters and nature…
We show that the far-IR properties of distant Luminous and Ultraluminous InfraRed Galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) are on average divergent from analogous sources in the local Universe. Our analysis is based on Spitzer MIPS and IRAC data of L_IR>10^10 L_solar, 70um-selected objects in the 0.1<z<2 redshift range and supported by a comparison with the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. The majority of the objects in our sample are described by Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) which peak at longer wavelengths than local sources of equivalent total infrared luminosity. This shift in SED peak wavelength imp…
We use a sample of 9397 low z galaxies with a close companion to investigate the connection between mergers and luminous infra-red (IR) galaxies (LIRGs). The pairs are selected from the SDSS and have projected separations rp < 80 kpc, relative velocities dv < 300 km/s and stellar mass ratios within a factor 1:10. The IR luminosities (LIR) of galaxies in the pair and (mass, z and environment-matched) control samples are determined from the SDSS -- IRAS matched catalog of Hwang et al. (2010). We find a trend for increasing LIRG fraction towards smaller pair separations, peaking at a factor of ~ …
We have detected the CO(2-1) transition from the submillimetre galaxy (SMG) LESSJ033229.4-275619 at z=4.755 using the new Compact Array Broadband Backend system on the Australian Telescope Compact Array. These data have identified a massive gas reservoir available for star formation for the first time in an SMG at z~5. We use the luminosity and velocity width (FWHM of 160 km/s) of the CO(2--1) line emission to constrain the gas and dynamical mass of Mgas~1.6x10^10 Msun and Mdyn(<2kpc)~5x10^10 (0.25/sin^2(i)) Msun, respectively, similar to that observed for SMGs at lower redshifts of z~2-4, alt…
We present a quantitative morphological analysis using HST NICMOS H160- and ACS I775- band imaging of 25 spectroscopically confirmed submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) which have redshifts between z=0.7-3.4. Our analysis also employs a comparison sample of more typical star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts (such as LBGs) which have lower far-infrared luminosities. This is the first large-scale study of the morphologies of SMGs in the near-infrared at ~0.1" resolution (<1kpc). We find that the half light radii of the SMGs (r_h=2.3+/-0.3 and 2.8+/-0.4kpc in the observed I- and H-bands respective…
We present the results of SCUBA observations of a complete sample of local ULIRGs. Twenty of the initial sample of 23 sources are detected at 850 um and nearly half of the objects are also detected at 450 um. This data is combined with existing observations of a further seven ULIRGs to produce the largest sample of submm observations of ULIRGs currently available. We use similar techniques to the SLUGS survey to fit dust spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to their far-IR emission. We find that ULIRGs have a higher dust temperature than lower luminosity objects (42K compared to 35K) and a ste…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of two nearby Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) that exhibit evidence of widespread shock excitation induced by ongoing merger activity, IC 1623 and NGC 3256. We show the importance of carefully separating excitation due to shocks vs. excitation by HII regions and the usefulness of IFU data in interpreting the complex processes in LIRGs. Our analysis focuses primarily on the emission line gas which is extensive in both systems and is a result of the abundant ongoing star formation as well as widespread LINER-like excitation from shocks. We use …
A primary goal of the SCUBA-2 Web survey is to perform tomography of the early inter-galactic medium by studying systems containing some of the brightest quasi-stellar objects (QSOs; 2.5<z<3.0) and nearby submillimetre galaxies. As a first step, this paper aims to characterize the galaxies that host the QSOs. To achieve this, a sample of 13 hyper-luminous (L_AGN>10^14 L_odot) QSOs with previous submillimetre continuum detections were followed up with CO(3-2) observations using the NOEMA interferometer. All but two of the QSOs are detected in CO(3-2); for one non-detection, our observations sho…
We identify eight z>1 radio sources undetected at 850um but robustly detected at 70um, confirming that they represent ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with hotter dust temperatures (T_dust=52+-10 K) than Submillimetre Galaxies (SMGs) at similar luminosities and redshifts. These galaxies share many properties with SMGs: ultra-violet (UV) spectra consistent with starbursts, high stellar masses and radio luminosities. We can attribute their radio emission to star formation since high-resolution MERLIN radio maps show extended emission regions (with half light radii of 2-3kpc), which are u…
We present a new, detailed analysis of the morphologies and molecular gas fractions for a complete sample of 65 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) using high resolution $I$-band images from The Hubble Space Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m Telescope and the Pan-STARRS1 Survey. Our classification scheme includes single undisturbed galaxies, minor mergers, and major mergers, with the latter divided into five distinct stages from pre-first pericenter passage to final nuclear coalescence. We find that major mergers of molecular…
Abell 2146 ($z$ = 0.232) consists of two galaxy clusters undergoing a major merger. The system was discovered in previous work, where two large shock fronts were detected using the $\textit{Chandra X-ray Observatory}$, consistent with a merger close to the plane of the sky, caught soon after first core passage. A weak gravitational lensing analysis of the total gravitating mass in the system, using the distorted shapes of distant galaxies seen with ACS-WFC on $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$, is presented. The highest peak in the reconstruction of the projected mass is centred on the Brightes…
Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are among the most luminous dusty galaxies in the Universe, but their true nature remains unclear; are SMGs the progenitors of the massive elliptical galaxies we see in the local Universe, or are they just a short-lived phase among more typical star-forming galaxies? To explore this problem further, we investigate the clustering of SMGs identified in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We use a catalogue of submillimetre ($850μ$m) source identifications derived using a combination of radio counterparts and colour/IR selection to analyse a sample of 914 SMGs in th…
It is often claimed that overdensities of (or even individual bright) submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs) trace the assembly of the most-massive dark matter structures in the Universe. We test this claim by performing a counts-in-cells analysis of mock SMG catalogues derived from the Bolshoi cosmological simulation to investigate how well SMG associations trace the underlying dark matter structure. We find that SMGs exhibit a relatively complex bias: some regions of high SMG overdensity are underdense in terms of dark matter mass, and some regions of high dark matter overdensity contain no …
We present VIMOS integral field spectroscopy of the brightest radio-quiet QSO on the southern sky HE 1029-1401 at a redshift of z=0.086. Standard decomposition techniques for broad-band imaging are extended to integral field data in order to deblend the QSO and host emission. We perform a tentative analysis of the stellar continuum finding a young stellar population (<100Myr) or a featureless continuum embedded in an old stellar population (10Gyr) typical for a massive elliptical galaxy. The stellar velocity dispersion of sigma_*=320\pm90 km/s and the estimated black hole mass log(M_BH/M_sun)=…
We present results of Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS H-band imaging of 73 of most luminous (i.e., log[L_IR/L_0]>11.4) Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). This dataset combines multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic data from space (Spitzer, HST, GALEX, and Chandra) and ground-based telescopes. In this paper we use the high-resolution near-infrared data to recover nuclear structure that is obscured by dust at optical wavelengths and measure the evolution in this structure along the merger sequence. A large fraction of all galaxies in our sample p…
We exploit ALMA 870um (345GHz) observations of submillimetre sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South to investigate the far-infrared properties of high-redshift submillimetre galaxies (SMGs). Using the precisely located 870um ALMA positions of 99 SMGs, together with 24um and radio imaging of this field, we deblend the Herschel/SPIRE imaging of this region to extract their far-infrared fluxes and colours. The median photometric redshifts for ALMA LESS (ALESS) SMGs which are detected in at least two SPIRE bands increases with wavelength of the peak in their SEDs, with z=2.3+/-0.2, 2.5+/…
We present Herschel-PACS spectroscopy of the [OI]63um far-infrared cooling line from a sample of six unlensed and spectroscopically-confirmed 870um-selected submillimetre (submm) galaxies (SMGs) at 1.1<z<1.6 from the LABOCA Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) Submm Survey (LESS). This is the first survey of [OI]63um, one of the main photodissociation region (PDR) cooling lines, in SMGs. New high-resolution ALMA interferometric 870um continuum imaging confirms that these six Herschel-targeted SMG counterparts are bona fide sources of submm emission. We detect [OI]63um in two SMGs with a S…
It is not yet clear what triggers the activity of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), but galaxy merging has been suspected to be one of the main mechanisms fuelling the activity. Using deep optical images taken at various ground-based telescopes, we investigate the fraction of galaxy mergers in 39 luminous AGNs (M$_{R}\, \lesssim$ -22.6 mag) at $z \leq$ 0.3 (a median redshift of 0.155), of which the host galaxies are generally considered as early-type galaxies. Through visual inspection of the images, we find that 17 of 39 AGN host galaxies (43.6%) show the evidence for current or past mergers lik…
We present simulations of dry-merger encounters between pairs of elliptical galaxies with dark matter halos. The aim of these simulations is to study the intergalactic stellar populations produced in both parabolic and hyperbolic encounters. We model progenitor galaxies with total-to-luminous mass ratios M_T/M_L 3 and 11. The initial mass of the colliding galaxies are chosen so that M_1/M_2 and 10. The model galaxies are populated by particles representing stars, as in Stanghellini et al. (2006), and dark matter. Merger remnants resulting from these encounters display a population of unbounded…
The phase transition between galaxies and quasars is often identified with the rare population of hyper-luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies. Galaxy formation models predict these systems to grow via mergers, that can deliver large amounts of gas toward their centers, induce intense bursts of star formation and feed their supermassive black holes. Here we report the detection of 24 galaxies emitting Lyman-alpha emission on projected physical scales of about 400 kpc around the hyper-luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-0913, at redshift z = 3.631, using Very Large Telescope observations. Whi…
We present an analysis of the complex gas hydrodynamics in the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster RXJ1347.5-1145 caught in the act of merging with a subcluster to its southeast using a combined $186$ ks Chandra exposure, $2.5$ times greater than previous analyses. The primary cluster hosts a sloshing cold front spiral traced by four surface brightness edges $5.^{\prime \prime}85^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$ west, $7.^{\prime \prime}10^{+0.07}_{-0.03}$ southeast, $11.^{\prime \prime}5^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ east, and $16.^{\prime \prime}7^{+0.3}_{-0.5}$ northeast from the primary central dominant galaxy, suggesting the…
We present the results of a multiwavelength investigation of the very X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MACSJ0553.4-3342 ($z = 0.4270$; hereafter MACSJ0553). Combining high-resolution data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based galaxy spectroscopy, our analysis establishes the system unambiguously as a binary, post-collision merger of massive clusters. Key characteristics include perfect alignment of luminous and dark matter for one component, a separation of almost 650 kpc (in projection) between the dark-matter peak of the other subcluster an…
Interferometric observations have demonstrated that a significant fraction of single-dish submillimetre (submm) sources are blends of multiple submm galaxies (SMGs), but the nature of this multiplicity, i.e. whether the galaxies are physically associated or chance projections, has not been determined. We performed spectroscopy of 11 SMGs in six multi-component submm sources, obtaining spectroscopic redshifts for nine of them. For an additional two component SMGs, we detected continuum emission but no obvious features. We supplement our observed sources with four sources from the literature. Th…
Gravitational waves (GWs) in the nano-hertz band are great tools for understanding the cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei. We consider SMBH binaries in high-$z$ ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) as sources of a stochastic GW background (GWB). ULIRGs are likely associated with gas-rich galaxy mergers containing SMBHs that possibly occur at most once in the life of galaxies, unlike multiple dry mergers at low redshift. Adopting a well-established sample of ULIRGs, we study the properties of the GWB due to coalescing binary SMBHs in these galaxie…
We compared the total mass density profiles of three different types of galaxies using weak gravitational lensing: (i) 29 galaxies that host quasars at z~0.32 that are in a post-starburst (PSQ) phase with high star formation indicating recent merger activity, (ii) 22 large elliptical galaxies from the SLACS sample that do not host a quasar at z~0.23, and (iii) 17 galaxies that host moderately luminous quasars at z~0.36 powered by disk instabilities, but with no intense star formation. On an initial test we found no evidence for a connection between the merger state of a galaxy and the profile …
We present a statistical study of the luminosity functions of galaxies surrounding luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at average redshifts <z>=0.34 and <z>=0.65. The luminosity functions are derived by extracting source photometry around more than 40,000 LRGs and subtracting foreground and background contamination using randomly selected control fields. We show that at both studied redshifts the average luminosity functions of the LRGs and their satellite galaxies are poorly fitted by a Schechter function due to a luminosity gap between the centrals and their most luminous satellites. We utilize a t…
