Magnetic and phonon excitations in the antiferromagnet CoO with an unquenched orbital angular momentum are studied by neutron scattering. Results of energy scans in several Brillouin zones in the (HHL) plane for energy transfers up to 16 THz are presented. The measurements were performed in the antiferromagnetic ordered state at 6 K (well below TN~290 K) as well as in the paramagnetic state at 450 K. Several magnetic excitation modes are identified from the dependence of their intensity on wavevector and temperature. Within a Hund's rule model the excitations correspond to fluctuations of coupled orbital and spin degrees of freedom whose bandwidth is controlled by interionic superexchange. The different <111> ordering domains give rise to several magnetic peaks at each wavevector transfer.
The novel spin-chain cobalt oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12 [P-62m, a = 10.1093(2) A and c = 3.562 51(9) A at 295 K] is reported. Polycrystalline sample of the compound was studied by neutron diffraction (at 6 and 295 K) and magnetic susceptibility measurements (5 to 390 K). The cobalt oxide was found to be analogous to the copper oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12, which is comprised of magnetic-linear chains at inter-chain distance of 10 A. Although the cobalt oxide chains (mu_eff of 3.64 mu_B per Co) are substantially antiferromagnetic (theta_W = -38.8 K), neither low-dimensional magnetism nor long-range ordering has bee…
We investigate the low temperature magnetic field dependence of the resistivity in the thermoelectric misfit cobalt oxide [Bi1.7Ca2O4]0.59CoO2 from 60 K down to 3 K. The scaling of the negative magnetoresistance demonstrates a spin dependent transport mechanism due to a strong Hund's coupling. The inferred microscopic description implies dual electronic states which explain the coexistence between localized and itinerant electrons both contributing to the thermopower. By shedding a new light on the electronic states which lead to a high thermopower, this result likely provides a new potential …
To shed new light on the mechanism of superconductivity in sodium cobalt oxide bilayer-hydrate (BLH), we perform a density functional calculation with full structure optimization for BLH and its related nonsuperconducting phase, monolayer hydrate (MLH). We find that these hydrates have similar band structures, but a notable difference can be seen in the $a_{1g}$ band around the Fermi level. While its dispersion in the $z$ direction is negligibly small for BLH, it is of the order of 0.1 eV for MLH. This result implies that the three dimensional feature of the $a_{1g}$ band may be the origin for…
We report infrared spectroscopic properties of the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa$_{0.66}$K$_{0.36}$O$_2$]CoO$_2$. These measurements performed on single crystals allow us to determine the optical conductivity as a function of temperature. In addition to a large temperature dependent transfer of spectral weight, an unconventional low energy mode is found. We show that both its frequency and damping scale as the temperature itself. In fact, a basic analysis demonstrates that this mode fully scales onto a function of $ω$/T up to room temperature. This behavior suggests low energy…
We investigate both thermoelectric and thermodynamic properties of the misfit cobalt oxide [Bi$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Ca$_{2}$O$_{4}$]$^{RS}_{0.6}$CoO$_{2}$. A large negative magnetothermopower is found to scale with both magnetic field and temperature revealing a significant spin entropy contribution to thermoelectric properties giving rise to a constant S$_0\approx$ 60 $μ$V K$^{-1}$ equal to the high temperature asymptotic value of the spin 1/2 entropy. Low temperature specific heat measurements allow us to determine an enhanced electronic part with $γ\approx$ 50 mJ (mol K$^{2}$)$^{-1}$ attesting …
We report on susceptibility measurements in the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa0.66K0.36O2]CoO2, which demonstrate the existence of a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) governing the electronic properties. The investigated low frequency susceptibility displays a scaling behavior with both the temperature T and the magnetic field B ranging from the high-T non-Fermi liquid down to the low-T Fermi liquid. Whereas the inferred scaling form can be discussed within the standard framework of the quantum critical phenomena, the determined critical exponents suggest an unconventional …
We study the excitonic phase and low-energy excitation spectra of perovskite cobalt oxides. Constructing the five-orbital Hubbard model defined on the three-dimensional cubic lattice for the $3d$ bands of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$, we calculate the excitonic susceptibility in the normal state in the random-phase approximation (RPA) to show the presence of the instability toward excitonic condensation. Based on the excitonic ground state with a magnetic multipole obtained in the mean-field approximation, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility of the excitonic phase in the RPA and find that…
By means of neutron scattering we have determined new branches of magnetic excitations in orbitally active CoO (TN=290 K) up to 15 THz and for temperatures from 6 K to 450 K. Data were taken in the (111) direction in six single-crystal zones. From the dependence on temperature and Q we have identified several branches of magnetic excitation. We describe a model for the coupled orbital and spin states of Co2+ subject to a crystal field and tetragonal distortion.
We have investigated the low temperature specific heat properties as a function of magnetic field in the strongly correlated layered cobalt oxide [BiBa$_{0.66}$K$_{0.36}$O$_2$]CoO$_2$. These measurements reveal two kinds of magnetic field dependent contributions in qualitative agreement with the presence of a previously inferred magnetic Quantum Critical Point (QCP). First, the coefficient of the low temperature T$^3$ behavior of the specific heat turns out to sizeably decrease near a magnetic field consistent with the critical value reported in a recent paper. In addition, a moderate but sign…
The surprise discovery of superconductivity below 5K in sodium cobalt oxides when hydrated with water has caught the attention of experimentalists and theorists alike. Most explanations for its occurence have focused heavily on the properties of some small elliptically shaped pockets predicted to be the electronically dominant Fermi surface sheet, but direct attempts to look for them have instead cast serious doubts over their existence. Here we present evidence that these pockets do indeed exist, based on bulk measurements of the electron momentum distribution in unhydrated and hydrated sodiu…
A general spin-state model and a qualitative physical picture have been proposed for a class of lately synthesized layered cobalt oxides (LCOs) by means of density functional calculations. As the plane corrugation of the cobalt-oxygen layer decreases, the LCOs evolve from a high-spin (HS) superexchange-coupled antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator to an almost-HS AFM/ferromagnetic (FM) competing system where the FM coupling is mediated via the p-d exchange by an increasing amount of delocalized pdσholes having mainly the planar O 2p character. It is tentatively suggested that the delocalized holes…
A fully ab initio scheme based on quantum chemical wavefunction methods is used to investigate the correlated multiorbital electronic structure of a 3d-metal compound, LaCoO3. The strong short-range electron correlations, involving both Co and O orbitals, are treated by multireference techniques. The use of effective parameters like the Hubbard U and interorbital U', J terms and the problems associated with their explicit calculation are avoided with this approach. We provide new insight into the spin-state transition at about 90 K and the nature of charge carriers in the doped material. Our r…
Recent experiments indicate that static stripe-like charge order is generic to the hole-doped copper oxide superconductors and competes with superconductivity. Here we show that a similar type of charge order is present in La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$CoO$_4$, an insulating analogue of the copper oxide superconductors containing cobalt in place of copper. The stripe phase we have detected is accompanied by short-range, quasi-one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic order, and provides a natural explanation for the distinctive hourglass shape of the magnetic spectrum previously observed in neutron scattering …
We obtain the electronic states and structures of two-dimensional cobalt oxides, Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ (x=0, 0.35, 0.5 and 0.75) by utilizing the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbitals (FP-LMTO) methods, from which some essential electronic interaction parameters are estimated: the bare on-site Coulomb interaction of cobalt U$_{dd}$=7.5 eV renormalizes to 5 eV for x=0.35, the $pd$ hybridizations t$_{pdσ}$ and t$_{pdπ}$ are -1.40 and 0.70 eV, respectively. The density of states at E$_{F}$ decreases from 6-7 states/eV in the local density approximation (LDA) to about 1.0 states/eV in the LDA+U sc…
The electronic state in layered cobalt oxides with hexagonal structure is examined. We find that the electronic structure reflects the nature of the Kagomé lattice hidden in the CoO_2 layer which consists of stacked triangular lattices of oxygen ions and of cobalt ions. A fundamental model for the electron system is proposed and the mechanism of the unique transport and magnetic properties of the cobalt oxides are discussed in the light of the model.
We report the measurements of thermopower, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity in a complex cobalt oxide Li$_{0.48}$Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$, whose crystal structure can be viewed as an intergrowth of the O3 phase of Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ and the P2 phase of Na$_{y}$CoO$_{2}$ along the c axis. The compound shows large room-temperature thermopower of $\sim$180 $μ$V/K, which is substantially higher than those of Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ and Na$_{y}$CoO$_{2}$. The figure of merit for the polycrystalline sample increases rapidly with increasing temperature, and it achieves nearly 10$^{-4}$ K$^{-1}$ a…
A wide family of cobalt oxides of formulation (Pr,Ln,Ca)CoO3 (Ln being a lanthanide) exhibits a coupled valence and spin-state transition (VSST) at a temperature T*, which involves two concomitant modifications: (i) a change in the spin state of Co3+ from low-spin (T < T*) to a higher spin-state (T > T*), and (ii) a change in the valence state of Pr, from a mixed Pr4+/Pr3+ state (T < T*) to a purely trivalent state (T > T*), accompanied by an equivalent charge transfer within the Co3+/Co4+ subsystem. In the present paper, the VSST taking place in (Pr0.7Sm0.3)0.7Ca0.3CoO3 at T* = about 90 K is …
We report on strong dipole transitions to 3d orbitals of neighboring Co atoms in the Co 1s x-ray absorption pre-edge. They are revealed by applying high-resolution resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) to compounds containing CoO6 clusters. When contrasted to quadrupole local 1s3d excitations, these non-local 1s3d transitions are identified by their energy dispersion and angular dependence, their sensitivity to second-shell effects (i.e. the connection mode of the CoO6 octahedra and the bond lengths), and an upwards energy shift of 2.5 eV due to the poorer screening of the core hole. The…
We present a numerical treatment of a spin-orbital polaron model for Na_xCoO_2 at small hole concentration (0.7 < x < 1). We demonstrate how the polarons account for the peculiar magnetic properties of this layered compound: They explain the large susceptibility; their internal degrees of freedom lead both to a negative Curie-Weiss temperature and yet to a ferromagnetic intra-layer interaction, thereby resolving a puzzling contradiction between these observations. We make specific predictions on the momentum and energy location of excitations resulting from the internal degrees of freedom of t…
Misfit-layered (ML) cobalt oxides of the general formula of [MmA2Om+2]qCoO2 have been proven to be efficient thermoelectric materials as the structure is capable in accommodating the two seemingly contradictory characteristics of high electrical conductivity and large thermo-electric power. They are also potential hosts for other oxymoron-like functions. The known phases all contain one or two square-planar MO (M = Co, Bi, Pb, Tl, etc.) layers sandwiched together with AO (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, etc.) planes of square symmetry and CoO2 layers of hexagonal symmetry. Here we report realization of the si…
We study a Co-benzene sandwich molecule bridging the tips of a Cu nanocontact as a realistic model of correlated molecular transport. To this end we employ a recently developed method for calculating the correlated electronic structure and transport properties of nanoscopic conductors. When the molecule is slightly compressed by the tips of the nanocontact the dynamic correlations originating from the strongly interacting Co 3d shell give rise to an orbital Kondo effect while the usual spin Kondo effect is suppressed due to Hund's rule coupling. This non-trivial Kondo effect produces a sharp a…
We report 59Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies of bilayer water intercalated sodium cobalt oxides NaxCoO2.yH2O (BLH) with the superconducting transition temperatures, 2 K < T_c <= 4.6 K, as well as a magnetic BLH sample without superconductivity. We obtained a magnetic phase diagram of T_c and the magnetic ordering temperature T_M against the peak frequency nu_3 59Co NQR transition I_z = +- 5/2 <=> +-7/2 and found a dome shape superconducting phase. The 59Co NQR spectrum of the non-superconducting BLH shows a broadening below T_M without the critical divergence of 1/T_1 and 1/T_2, s…
We have investigated the orbital states of the orbital-glassy (short-range orbital ordered) spinel vanadate Co$_{1.21}$V$_{1.79}$O$_{4}$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and subsequent configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. From the sign of the XMCD spectra, it was found that the spin magnetic moment of the Co ion is aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field and that of the V ion anti-parallel to it, consistent with neutron scattering studies. It was revealed that the excess Co ions at the octahedral site take the trivalent…
We found a new cobalt oxide (CaOH)1.14CoO2 by utilizing the high-pressure technique. X-ray and electron diffraction studies revealed that the compound has layer structure which consists of CdI2-type CoO2 layers and rock-salt-type double CaOH atomic layers. The two subcells have incommensurate periodicity along the a-axis, resulting in modulated crystal structure due to the inter-subcell interaction. The structural modulation affects carrier conduction through the potential randomness. We found that the two-dimensional (2-D) variable-range hopping (VRH) regime with hole conduction is dominant a…
We claim that for calculations of the electronic structure of 3d oxides very strong electron correlations have to be taken into account similarly to those assumed in many-electron crystal field approach. For Co3+ ions in NaxCoO2.yH2O there are 15 low lying many-electron states within 0.1 eV as can be obtained in the many-electron CEF approach with taking into account the spin-orbit coupling. We claim, that the used by us Hamiltonian for the trigonal distortion is correct.
We have performed both in-plane resistivity, Hall effect and specific heat measurements on the thermoelectric cobalt oxide Ca$_{3}$Co$_{4}$O$_{9}$. Four distinct transport regimes are found as a function of temperature, corresponding to a low temperature insulating one up to $T_{min}\approx $63 K, a strongly correlated Fermi liquid up to $T^*\approx $140 K, with $ρ=ρ_0+AT^2$ and $A\approx 3.63$ $10^{-2} μΩcm/K^{2}$, followed by an incoherent metal with $k_Fl\leq 1$ and a high temperature insulator above T$^{**}\approx $510 K . Specific heat Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= 93$ mJ/(mol.K$^{2}$) confi…
(Pr0.7Sm0.3)0.7Ca0.3CoO3 belongs to a class of cobalt oxides undergoing a first-order transition (T* close to 90 K) associated to a coupled change in the valence and spin-state degrees of freedom. The Curie-Weiss regime present around room temperature (T >> T*) was analysed in detail to address the controversial issue of the cobalt spin states above the transition. This magnetic investigation indicates that the Co4+ are in an intermediate spin-state, while the Co3+ are in a mixed state combining low-spin and high-spin states. These results are discussed with respect to the literature on relate…
Thermoelectric properties of the layered cobalt oxide system LixCoO2 were investigated in a wide range of Li composition, 0.98 >= x >= 0.35. Single-phase bulk samples of LixCoO2 were successfully obtained through electrochemical deintercalation of Li from the pristine LiCoO2 phase. While LixCoO2 with x >= 0.94 is semiconductive, the highly Li-deficient phase (0.75 >= x >= 0.35) exhibits metallic conductivity. The magnitude of Seebeck coefficient at 293 K (S293K) significantly depends on the Li content (x). The S293K value is as large as +70 ~ +100 uV/K for x >= 0.94, and it rapidly decreases f…
Here we report the magnetic properties of the layered cobalt oxide system, LixCoO2, in the whole range of Li composition, 0 <= x <= 1. Based on dc-magnetic susceptibility data, combined with results of 59Co-NMR/NQR observations, the electronic phase diagram of LixCoO2 has been established. As in the related material NaxCoO2, a magnetic critical point is found to exist between x = 0.35 and 0.40, which separates a Pauli-paramagnetic and a Curie-Weiss metals. In the Pauli-paramagnetic regime (x <= 0.35), the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing x. Neverthele…
By means of muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ^+$SR) techniques, we have investigated the magnetism of quasi one-dimensional (1D) cobalt oxides $AE_{n+2}$Co$_{n+1}$O$_{3n+3}$ ($AE$=Ca, Sr and Ba, $n$=1, 2, 3, 5 and $\infty$), in which the 1D CoO$_3$ chain is surrounded by six equally spaced chains forming a triangular lattice in the $ab$-plane, using polycrystalline samples, from room temperature down to 1.8 K. For the compounds with $n$=1 - 5, transverse field $μ^+$SR experiments showed the existence of a magnetic transition below $\sim$100 K. The onset temperature of the transition ($T_{\…
We posit that there exist deep and fundamental relationships between the above seemingly very different materials. The carrier concentration-dependences of the electronic behavior in the conducting organic charge-transfer solids and layered cobaltates are very similar. These dependences can be explained within a single theoretical model, - the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with significant nearest neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Interestingly, superconductivity in the cobaltates seems to be restricted to bandfilling exactly or close to one-quarter, as in the organics. We show that dynamic Jahn-Tell…
The magnetic excitations in the cuprate superconductors might be essential for an understanding of high-temperature superconductivity. In these cuprate superconductors the magnetic excitation spectrum resembles an hour-glass and certain resonant magnetic excitations within are believed to be connected to the pairing mechanism which is corroborated by the observation of a universal linear scaling of superconducting gap and magnetic resonance energy. So far, charge stripes are widely believed to be involved in the physics of hour-glass spectra. Here we study an isostructural cobaltate that also …
An hour-glass shaped magnetic excitation spectrum appears to be an universal characteristic of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Fluctuating charge stripes or alternative band structure approaches are able to explain the origin of these spectra. Recently, an hour- glass spectrum has been observed in an insulating cobaltate, thus, favouring the charge stripe scenario. Here we show that neither charge stripes nor band structure effects are responsible for the hour-glass dispersion in a cobaltate within the checkerboard charge ordered regime of La2-xSrxCoO4. The search for charge str…
The results of DC magnetization measurements under hydrostatic (helium-gas) pressure are reported for an ambient pressure superconductor Na0.35CoO2.1.4D2O and its precursor compound, the gamma-phase Na0.75CoO2 that is known to combine a metallic conductivity with an unusual magnetic state below ~22K. The obtained data allowed us to present for the first time the pressure dependence of the magnetic transition in a metallic sodium cobaltate system. This dependence appears to be positive, with the magnetic transition rapidly shifting towards higher temperatures when an applied pressure increases.…
The structure of the low-energy electronic states in layered cobaltates is considered starting from the Mott insulating limit. We argue that the coherent part of the wave-functions and the Fermi-surface topology at low doping are strongly influenced by spin-orbit coupling of the correlated electrons on the $t_{2g}$ level. An effective t-J model based on mixed spin-orbital states is radically different from that for the cuprates, and supports unconventional, pseudospin-triplet pairing.
We have performed non-resonant x-ray diffraction, resonant soft and hard x-ray magnetic diffraction, soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements to clarify the electronic and magnetic states of the Co3+ ions in GdBaCo2O5.5. Our data are consistent with a 3+ Py Co HS state at the pyramidal sites and a 3+ Oc Co LS state at the octahedral sites. The structural distortion, with a doubling of the a axis (2ap x 2ap x 2ap cell), shows alternating elongations and contractions of the pyramids and indicates that the metal-insulator transition is associated with orbital order…
Resistivity and dc magnetization measurements were performed for the polycrystalline Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$O$_{3-δ}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15) samples. The as-fabricated samples exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) transition and the transition temperature increases with increasing the iron doping level. Annealing under high oxygen pressure induces a spin-state transition of Co ions in the \emph{iron-free} sample and such transition is reinforced with increasing the annealing oxygen pressure, while the annealing under high oxygen pressure suppresses the ferromagnetic ordering. Contr…
Orbital-related physics attracts growing interest in condensed matter research, but direct real-space access of the orbital degree of freedom is challenging. Here we report a first, real-space, imaging of a surface- assisted orbital ordered structure on a cobalt-terminated surface of the well-studied heavy fermion compound CeCoIn5. Within small tip-sample distances, the cobalt atoms on a cleaved (001) surface take on dumbbell shapes alternatingly aligned in the [100] and [010] directions in scanning tunneling microscopy topographies. First- principles calculations reveal that this structure is…
Ferromagnetism is observed at and above room temperature in pulsed laser deposited epitaxial films of Co-doped Ti-based oxide perovskite (La1-xSrxTiO3-d). The system has the characteristics of an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor (metal) at low concentrations (<~ 2 %), but develops inhomogeneity at higher cobalt concentrations. The films range from being opaque metallic to transparent semiconducting depending on the oxygen pressure during growth and are yet ferromagnetic.
Studies of the NMR Knight shift K of Na0.3CoO2.yH2O have been carried out in detail. The suppression of K by the occurrence of the superconductivity reported previously by the present authors in both magnetic field directions perpendicular and parallel to the c axis has been confirmed, indicating that the Cooper pairs are in the singlet state. The anisotropy of the suppression amplitudes is consistent with the anisotropy of the hyperfine coupling constant Aspin estimated by the K-kai plot. It has also been found that even samples, which do not exhibit a significant amount of the Curie-Weiss-li…
We summarize some characteristic features of the frustrated magnetic interactions in spin-orbital models adequate for cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. A generic tendency towards dimerization, found already in the degenerate Hubbard model, is confirmed for $t_{2g}$ but not for $e_g$ systems. In the $t_{2g}$ case the quantum orbital fluctuations are more pronounced and contribute to a stronger competition between different magnetic and orbital states. Therefore the orbital liquid states exist in some undoped $t_{2g}$ systems, while in the manganites such states can be trigg…
We observe quasi-static incommensurate magnetic peaks in neutron scattering experiments on layered cobalt oxides La2-xSrxCoO4 with high Co oxidation states that have been reported to be paramagnetic. This enables us to measure the magnetic excitations in this highly hole-doped incommensurate regime and compare our results with those found in the low-doped incommensurate regime that exhibit hourglass magnetic spectra. The hourglass shape of magnetic excitations completely disappears given a high Sr doping. Moreover, broad low-energy excitations are found, which are not centered at the incommens…
We present a theory of the Raman scattering from the orbital wave excitations in manganese oxides. Two excitation processes of the Raman scattering are proposed. The Raman scattering cross section is formulated by using the pseudospin operator for orbital degree of freedom in a Mn ion. The Raman spectra from the orbital wave excitations are calculated and their implications in the recent experimental results reported in LaMnO$_3$ are discussed.
We present an extension of Cluster Perturbation Theory to include many body correlations associated to local e-e repulsion in real materials. We show that this approach can describe the physics of complex correlated materials where different atomic species and different orbitals coexist. The prototypical case of MnO is considered.
We argue that the 3A2 state considered by Oles in Phys. Stat. Sol. (b) 236 (2003) 281 for the d2 system occurring in the V3+ ion in V2O3 and LaVO3 as well as in Ti2+ ion in TiO and in many other oxides is wrong. The proper ground state is 3T1g - its 9-fold degeneracy is further split in a crystal by intra-atomic spin-orbit interactions and lattice distortions.
We report $^{23}$Na and $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic (NMR) and quadrupolar resonance (NQR) studies for the $x=2/3$ phase of the lamellar oxide Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, which allowed us to establish reliably the atomic order of the Na layers and their stacking between the CoO$_{2}$ slabs. We evidence that the Na$^{+}$ order stabilizes filled non magnetic Co$^{3+}$ ions on 25% of the cobalt sites arranged in a triangular sublattice. The transferred holes are delocalized on the 75% complementary cobalt sites which unexpectedly display a planar cobalt kagomé structure. These experimental results resolve a…
The study of strong electron correlations in transition metal oxides with modern microscopy and diffraction techniques unveiled a fascinating world of nanosize textures in the spin, charge, and crystal structure. Examples range from high $T_c$ superconducting cuprates and nickelates, to hole doped manganites and cobaltites. However, in many cases the appearance of these textures is accompanied with "glassiness" and multiscale/multiphase effects, which complicate significantly their experimental verification. Here, we demonstrate how nuclear magnetic resonance may be uniquely used to probe nano…
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, we investigated the evolution of the local atomic structure and lattice dynamics of La(1-x)Sr(x)CoO3 (x=0-0.5) as it crosses over with x from an insulator to a ferromagnetic metal (FMM). Our pair density function analysis indicates that in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) phase for all x, spin activation of Co3+ ions induces local static Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions. The size of the JT lattice increases almost linearly with x. However, in the FMM phase, static JT distortions are absent for x <= 30 %. This coincides with narrowing of hw=22 and 24…
We derived simple rules for the sign of superexchange interaction based on the multielectron calculations of the superexchange interaction in the transition metal oxides that are valid both below and above spin crossover under high pressure. The superexchange interaction between two cations in d$^n$ configurations is given by a sum of individual contributions related to the electron-hole virtual excitations to the different states of the d$^{n + 1}$ and d$^{n - 1}$ configurations. Using these rules, we have analyzed the sign of the superexchange interaction of a number of oxides with magnetic …
Recent studies exposed many remarkable properties of layered cobaltates NaxCoO2. Surprisingly, many-body effects have been found to increase at sodium-rich compositions of NaxCoO2 where one expects a simple, nearly free motion of the dilute S=1/2 holes doped into a band insulator NaCoO2. Here we discuss the origin of enigmatic correlations that turn a doped NaCoO2 into a strongly correlated electronic system. A minimal model including orbital degeneracy is proposed and its predictions are discussed. The model is based on a key property of cobalt oxides - the spin-state quasidegeneracy of CoO6 …
The class of transition metal compounds shows an enormous richness of physical properties, such as metal-insulator transitions, colossal magneto-resistance, super-conductivity, magneto-optics and spin-depend transport. It now becomes more and more clear that in order to describe transition metal compounds the charge, orbital, spin and lattice degrees of freedom should all be taken into account. With the recognition that the local orbital occupation plays an important role in many of the transition metal compounds there is a need for experimental techniques that can measure the orbital occupati…
We discuss the notions of spin-orbital polarization and ordering in paramagnetic materials, and address their consequences in transition metal oxides. Extending the combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory scheme to the case of materials with large spin-orbit interactions, we investigate the electronic excitations of the paramagnetic phases of Sr2IrO4 and Sr2RhO4. We show that the interplay of spin-orbit interactions, structural distortions and Coulomb interactions suppresses spin-orbital fluctuations. As a result, the room temperature phase of Sr2IrO4 is a paramagnetic spin…
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting e_g electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund's exchange coupling J_H and by the crystal field orbital splitting E_z in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.
The collective behavior of correlated electrons in the VO$_2-$interface layer of LaVO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructure is studied within a quarter-filled $t_{2g}$-orbital Hubbard model on a square lattice. We argue that the ground state is ferromagnetic driven by the double exchange mechanism, and is orbitally and charge ordered due to a confined geometry and electron correlations. The orbital and charge density waves open gaps on the entire Fermi surfaces of all orbitals. The theory explains the observed insulating behavior of the $p$-type interface between LaVO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$.
Single crystals of the layered perovskite GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} (GBCO) have been grown by the floating-zone method, and their transport, magnetic, and structural properties have been studied in detail over a wide range of oxygen contents. The obtained data are used to establish a rich phase diagram centered at the "parent'' compound GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} -- an insulator with Co ions in the 3+ state. An attractive feature of GBCO is that it allows a precise and continuous doping of CoO_{2} planes with either electrons or holes, spanning a wide range from the charge-ordered insulator at 50% electron dop…
