Partial interference cancellation (PIC) group decoding proposed by Guo and Xia is an attractive low-complexity alternative to the optimal processing for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications. It can well deal with the tradeoff among rate, diversity and complexity of space-time block codes (STBC). In this paper, a systematic design of full-diversity STBC with low-complexity PIC group decoding is proposed. The proposed code design is featured as a group-orthogonal STBC by replacing every element of an Alamouti code matrix with an elementary matrix composed of multiple diagonal layers of coded symbols. With the PIC group decoding and a particular grouping scheme, the proposed STBC can achieve full diversity, a rate of $(2M)/(M+2)$ and a low-complexity decoding for $M$ transmit antennas. Simulation results show that the proposed codes can achieve the full diversity with PIC group decoding while requiring half decoding complexity of the existing codes.
This paper investigates the error probability of several decoding methods for a source code with decoder side information, where the decoding methods are: 1) symbol-wise maximum a posteriori decoding, 2) successive-cancellation decoding, and 3) stochastic successive-cancellation decoding. The proof of the effectiveness of a decoding method is reduced to that for an arbitrary decoding method, where `effective' means that the error probability goes to zero as $n$ goes to infinity. Furthermore, we revisit the polar source code showing that stochastic successive-cancellation decoding, as well as s…
This paper introduces algorithms for the successive-cancellation decoding and the successive-cancellation list decoding of binary polar source/channel codes. By using the symmetric parametrization of conditional probability, we reduce both space and time complexity compared to the original algorithm introduced by Tal and Vardy.
Simulation results illustrating the performance and complexity of the sequential successive cancellation decoding algorithm are presented for the case of polar subcodes with Arikan and large kernels, as well as for extended BCH\ codes. Performance comparison with Arikan PAC and LDPC codes is provided. Furthermore, complete description of the decoding algorithm is presented.
The extended Golay code is shown to be representable as a chained polar subcode. This enables its decoding with the successive cancellation algorithm and its stack generalization. The decoder can be further simplified by employing fast Hadamard transform. The complexity of the obtained algorithm is comparable with that of the Vardy algorithm.
We introduce successive cancellation (SC) decoding of product codes (PCs) with single parity-check (SPC) component codes. Recursive formulas are derived, which resemble the SC decoding algorithm of polar codes. We analyze the error probability of SPC-PCs over the binary erasure channel under SC decoding. A bridge with the analysis of PCs introduced by Elias in 1954 is also established. Furthermore, bounds on the block error probability under SC decoding are provided, and compared to the bounds under the original decoding algorithm proposed by Elias. It is shown that SC decoding of SPC-PCs achi…
In this paper, we derive the exact weight distributions that emerge during each stage of successive cancellation decoding of polar codes. Though we do not compute the distance spectrum of polar codes, the results allow us to get an estimate of the decoding error probability and to show a link between the first nonzero components of the weight distribution and the partial order between the synthetic channels. Also, we establish the minimal distance between two cosets associated with two paths that differ in two positions. This can be regarded as a first step toward analyzing the weight distribu…
This work analyzes the latency of the simplified successive cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes proposed by Alamdar-Yazdi and Kschischang. It is shown that, unlike conventional successive cancellation decoding, where latency is linear in the block length, the latency of SSC decoding is sublinear. More specifically, the latency of SSC decoding is $O(N^{1-1/μ})$, where $N$ is the block length and $μ$ is the scaling exponent of the channel, which captures the speed of convergence of the rate to capacity. Numerical results demonstrate the tightness of the bound and show that most of…
BMERA or convolutional polar codes are an extension of polar codes with a provably better error exponent than polar codes. A successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm for BMERA codes similar to SC polar decoders is introduced. A pseudocode description of the SC decoder that can be extended to SC list (SCL) decoding is provided. Simulation results with and without outer CRC codes under SC and SCL decoding are presented for QAM modulation over the AWGN channel to compare the performance of polar and BMERA codes. BMERA codes outperform polar codes by more than 0.5 dB under SCL decoding with…
We study faulty successive cancellation decoding of polar codes for the binary erasure channel. To this end, we introduce a simple erasure-based fault model and we show that, under this model, polarization does not happen, meaning that fully reliable communication is not possible at any rate. Moreover, we provide numerical results for the frame erasure rate and bit erasure rate and we study an unequal error protection scheme that can significantly improve the performance of the faulty successive cancellation decoder with negligible overhead.
This letter proposes successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding of product codes with Reed--Muller (RM) component codes. SCL decoding relies on a product code description based on the $2\times 2$ Hadamard kernel, which enables interpreting the code as an RM subcode. The focus is on a class of product codes considered in wireless communication systems, based on single parity-check and extended Hamming component codes. For short product codes, it is shown that SCL decoding with a moderate list size performs as well as (and, sometimes, outperforms) belief propagation (BP) decoding. Furthermore, …
A product code with single parity-check component codes can be described via the tools of a multi-kernel polar code, where the rows of the generator matrix are chosen according to the constraints imposed by the product code construction. Following this observation, successive cancellation decoding of such codes is introduced. In particular, the error probability of single parity-check product codes over binary memoryless symmetric channels under successive cancellation decoding is characterized. A bridge with the analysis of product codes introduced by Elias is also established for the binary …
The decoding performance of polar codes strongly depends on the decoding algorithm used, while also the decoder throughput and its latency mainly depend on the decoding algorithm. In this work, we implement the powerful successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder on a GPU and identify the bottlenecks of this algorithm with respect to parallel computing and its difficulties. The inherent serial decoding property of the SCL algorithm naturally limits the achievable speed-up gains on GPUs when compared to CPU implementations. In order to increase the decoding throughput, we use a hybrid decoding s…
Polar codes under successive cancellation decoding proposed by Arıkan provably achieve the symmetric capacity of any given binary-input discrete memoryless channel. The successive cancellation list decoder for polar codes was described by Tal and Vardy as a generalization of the successive cancellation decoder of Arıkan. The performance of the successive cancellation list decoder is encouraging in practice. In this paper, we formalize the successive cancellation list decoder in our notation and prove that polar codes under successive cancellation list decoding achieve the symmetric capacity of…
A novel permuted fast successive-cancellation list decoding algorithm with fast Hadamard transform (FHT-FSCL) is presented. The proposed decoder initializes $L$ $(L\ge1)$ active decoding paths with $L$ random codeword permutations sampled from the full symmetry group of the codes. The path extension in the permutation domain is carried out until the first constituent RM code of order $1$ is visited. Conventional path extension of the successive-cancellation list decoder is then utilized in the information bit domain. The simulation results show that for a RM code of length $512$ with $46$ info…
We show that successive cancellation list decoding can be formulated exclusively using log-likelihood ratios. In addition to numerical stability, the log-likelihood ratio based formulation has useful properties which simplify the sorting step involved in successive cancellation list decoding. We propose a hardware architecture of the successive cancellation list decoder in the log-likelihood ratio domain which, compared to a log-likelihood domain implementation, requires less irregular and smaller memories. This simplification together with the gains in the metric sorter, lead to $56\%$ to $13…
A deep-learning-aided successive-cancellation list (DL-SCL) decoding algorithm for polar codes is introduced with deep-learning-aided successive-cancellation (DL-SC) decoding being a specific case of it. The DL-SCL decoder works by allowing additional rounds of SCL decoding when the first SCL decoding attempt fails, using a novel bit-flipping metric. The proposed bit-flipping metric exploits the inherent relations between the information bits in polar codes that are represented by a correlation matrix. The correlation matrix is then optimized using emerging deep-learning techniques. Performanc…
Dynamic successive cancellation flip (DSCF) decoding of polar codes is a powerful algorithm that can achieve the error correction performance of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding, with a complexity that is close to that of successive cancellation (SC) decoding at practical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. However, DSCF decoding requires costly transcendental computations which adversely affect its implementation complexity. In this paper, we first show that a direct application of common approximation schemes on the conventional DSCF decoding results in significant error-correcti…
A successive cancellation (SC) decoder with inactivations is proposed as an efficient implementation of SC list (SCL) decoding over the binary erasure channel. The proposed decoder assigns a dummy variable to an information bit whenever it is erased during SC decoding and continues with decoding. Inactivated bits are resolved using information gathered from decoding frozen bits. This decoder leverages the structure of the Hadamard matrix, but can be applied to any linear code by representing it as a polar code with dynamic frozen bits. SCL decoders are partially characterized using density evo…
Successive cancellation (SC) is the first and widely known decoder of polar codes, which has received a lot of attentions recently. However, its decoding schedule generating algorithms are still primitive, which are not only complex but also offline. This paper proposes a simple and online algorithm to generate the decoding schedule of SC decoder. Firstly, the dependencies among likelihood ratios (LR) are explored, which lead to the discovery of a sharing factor. Secondly, based on the online calculation of the sharing factor, the proposed algorithm is presented, which is neither based on the …
In this paper, faulty successive cancellation decoding of polar codes for the binary erasure channel is studied. To this end, a simple erasure-based fault model is introduced to represent errors in the decoder and it is shown that, under this model, polarization does not happen, meaning that fully reliable communication is not possible at any rate. Furthermore, a lower bound on the frame error rate of polar codes under faulty SC decoding is provided, which is then used, along with a well-known upper bound, in order to choose a blocklength that minimizes the erasure probability under faulty dec…
The successive cancellation list decoding algorithm for polar codes yields near-optimal decoding performance at the cost of high implementation complexity. The successive cancellation stack algorithm has been shown to provide similar decoding performance at a much lower computational complexity, but software implementations report a sub-par T/P performance. In this technical report, the benefits of the fast simplified successive cancellation list decoder are extended to the stack algorithm, resulting in a throughput increase by two orders of magnitude over the traditional stack decoder.
Polar codes are linear block codes that can achieve channel capacity at infinite code length. Successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding relies on a set of parallel decoders; it yields good error-correction performance at finite code length, at the cost of increased implementation complexity and power consumption. Current efforts in literature focus on design-time decoder complexity reduction, while lacking practical run-time power reduction methods. In this work, input-distribution-aware SCL (IDA-SCL) decoding is proposed, that allows to determine the parallelism to adopt by performing simpl…

Polar codes are capacity achieving error correcting codes that can be decoded through the successive-cancellation algorithm. To improve its error-correction performance, a list-based version called successive-cancellation list (SCL) has been proposed in the past, that however substantially increases the number of time-steps in the decoding process. The simplified SCL (SSCL) decoding algorithm exploits constituent codes within the polar code structure to greatly reduce the required number of time-steps without introducing any error-correction performance loss. In this paper, we propose a faster…
As a new joint source-channel coding scheme, the double polar (D-Polar) codes have been proposed recently. In this letter, a novel joint source-channel decoder, namely the joint successive cancellation list (J-SCL) decoder, is proposed to improve the decoding performance of the D-Polar codes. We merge the trellis of the source polar code and that of the channel polar code to construct a compound trellis. In this compound trellis, the joint source-channel nodes represent both of the information bits and the high-entropy bits. Based on the compound trellis, the J-SCL decoder is designed to recov…
Polar codes have emerged as the most favorable channel codes for their unique capacity-achieving property. To date, numerous works have been reported for efficient design of polar codes decoder. However, these prior efforts focused on design of polar decoders via deterministic computation, while the behavior of stochastic polar decoder, which can have potential advantages such as low complexity and strong error-resilience, has not been studied in existing literatures. This paper, for the first time, investigates polar decoding using stochastic logic. Specifically, the commonly-used successive …
Successive cancellation (SC) process is an essential component of various decoding algorithms used for polar codes and their variants. Rewinding this process seems trivial if we have access to all intermediate log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) and partial sums. However, as the block length increases, retaining all of the intermediate information becomes inefficient and impractical. Rewinding the SC process in a memory-efficient way is a problem that we address in this paper. We first explore the properties of the SC process based on the binary representation of the bit indices by introducing a new …
Polar codes have attracted a lot of attention during past few years and have been adopted as a coding scheme for 5G standard. Successive-cancellation list (SCL) decoder provides high level error-correction performance for polar codes, but the implementation complexity grows rapidly with the increase of the list size. Since the computation cost of sorting, many works focus on reducing the sorting complexity for SCL decoder. In this paper, we propose a method for SCL which directly reduce the number of input elements of sorting network without performance loss. Compared with SCL decoder, the pro…
Under successive cancellation (SC) decoding, polar codes are inferior to other codes of similar blocklength in terms of frame error rate. While more sophisticated decoding algorithms such as list- or stack-decoding partially mitigate this performance loss, they suffer from an increase in complexity. In this paper, we describe a new flavor of the SC decoder, called the SC flip decoder. Our algorithm preserves the low memory requirements of the basic SC decoder and adjusts the required decoding effort to the signal quality. In the waterfall region, its average computational complexity is almost …
Polar codes are a class of {\bf structured} channel codes proposed by Arıkan based on the principle of {\bf channel polarization}, and can {\bf achieve} the symmetric capacity of any Binary-input Discrete Memoryless Channel (B-DMC). The Soft CANcellation (SCAN) is a {\bf low-complexity} {\bf iterative} decoding algorithm of polar codes outperforming the widely-used Successive Cancellation (SC). Currently, in most cases, it is assumed that channel state is perfectly {\bf known} at the decoder and remains {\bf constant} during each codeword, which, however, is usually unrealistic. To decode pola…
Polar codes is promising because they can provably achieve the channel capacity while having an explicit construction method. Lots of work have been done for the bit-based decoding algorithm for polar codes. In this paper, generalized symbol-based successive cancellation (SC) and SC list decoding algorithms are discussed. A symbol-based recursive channel combination relationship is proposed to calculate the symbol-based channel transition probability. This proposed method needs less additions than the maximum-likelihood decoder used by the existing symbol-based polar decoding algorithm. In add…
We present in this paper a special class of unit memory convolutional codes (UMCCs), called semi-random UMCCs (SRUMCCs), where the information block is first encoded by a short block code and then transmitted in a block Markov (random) superposition manner. We propose a successive cancellation list decoding algorithm, by which a list of candidate codewords are generated serially until one passes an empirical divergence test instead of the conventional cyclic redundancy check (CRC). The threshold for testing the correctness of candidate codewords can be learned off-line based on the statistical…
Arıkan's polar coding, is by now a well studied technique that allows achieving the symmetric capacity of binary input memoryless channels with low complexity encoding and decoding, provided that the polar decoding architecture is used and the decoding metric is matched to the true channel. In this paper, we analyze communication rates that are achievable when the polar coding/decoding architecture is used with the decoder using an incorrect model of the channel. We define the `polar mismatched capacity' as an analogue of the classical mismatched capacity, give an expression for it, and derive…
This paper characterizes the latency of the simplified successive-cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes under hardware resource constraints. In particular, when the number of processing elements $P$ that can perform SSC decoding operations in parallel is limited, as is the case in practice, the latency of SSC decoding is $O\left(N^{1-1/μ}+\frac{N}{P}\log_2\log_2\frac{N}{P}\right)$, where $N$ is the block length of the code and $μ$ is the scaling exponent of the channel. Three direct consequences of this bound are presented. First, in a fully-parallel implementation where $P=\frac{…
Polar codes achieve outstanding error correction performance when using successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding with cyclic redundancy check. A larger list size brings better decoding performance and is essential for practical applications such as 5G communication networks. However, the decoding speed of SCL decreases with increased list size. Adaptive SCL (ASCL) decoding can greatly enhance the decoding speed, but the decoding latency for each codeword is different so A-SCL is not a good choice for hardware-based applications. In this paper, a hardware-friendly two-staged adaptive SCL (TA…

In this paper we propose an enhanced soft cancellation (SCAN) decoder for polar codes based on decoding stages permutation. The proposed soft cancellation list (SCANL) decoder runs $L$ independent SCAN decoders, each one relying on a different permuted factor graph. The estimated bits are selected among the $L$ candidates through a dedicated metric provided by the decoders. Furthermore, we introduce an early-termination scheme reducing decoding latency without affecting error correction performance. We investigate the error-correction performance of the proposed scheme under various combinatio…
