The structure of the neutron rich sodium isotopes 31,32,33Na was investigated by means of in-beam gammaray spectroscopy following one-neutron knockout and inelastic scattering of radioactive beams provided by the RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. The secondary beams were selected and separated by the fragment separator BigRIPS and incident at ~240 meV/u on a natural carbon (secondary) target, which was surrounded by the DALI2 array to detect coincident de-excitation gammarays. Scattered particles were identified by the spectrometer ZeroDegree. In 31Na, a new decay gammaray was observed in coincidence with the known (5/2+)-> 3/2(+) transition, while for 32,33Na excited states are reported for the first time. From a comparison to state-of-the-art shell model calculations it is concluded that the newly observed excited state in 31Na belongs to a rotational band formed by a 2p2h intruder configuration within the "Island of Inversion".
A systematic analysis of nuclear deformation is made for neutron-rich Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopes to explore the nuclear structure in the island of inversion near N = 40, where strong nuclear deformation is predicted. The nuclear ground states are obtained by the Skyrme Hartree-Fock method in three-dimensional coordinate space, which properly describes any nuclear shape. Three types of Skyrme interactions are employed to generate various deformed states in its isotopic chain. We find that in the island of inversion the occupation of highly elongated intruder orbits induces not only large quadrupol…
Investigation of Neutron Characteristics for Salt Blanket Models; Integral Fission Cross Section Measurements of Neptunium, Plutonium, Americium and Curium Isotopes
Mass measurements continue to provide invaluable information for elucidating nuclear structure and scenarios of astrophysical interest. The transition region between the $Z = 20$ and $28$ proton shell closures is particularly interesting due to the onset and evolution of nuclear deformation as nuclei become more neutron rich. This provides a critical testing ground for emerging ab-initio nuclear structure models. Here, we present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich chromium isotopes using the sensitive electrostatic Multiple-Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) …

Nuclear properties across the chart of nuclides are key to improving and validating our understanding of the strong interaction in nuclear physics. We present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Fe isotopes performed at the TITAN facility. The multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS), achieving a resolving power greater than $600\,000$ for the first time, enabled the measurement of $^{63-70}$Fe, including first-time high-precision direct measurements ($δm/m \sim 10^{-7}$) of $^{68-70}$Fe, as well as the discovery of a long-lived isomeric state in $^{69}$Fe.…
Recent experiments have confirmed that the neutron-rich isotopes $^{28,29}$F belong to the so-called island of inversion (IOI), a region of the nuclear chart around $Z=10$ and $N=20$ where nuclear structure deviates from the standard shell model predictions due to deformation and continuum effects. However, while the general principles leading to the IOI are relatively well understood, the details of the low-lying structure of the exotic fluorine isotopes $^{28-33}$F are basically unknown. In this work, we perform large-scale shell model calculations including continuum states to investigate t…
The N=20 and N=28 "islands of inversion" are described by large scale shell model calculations with an extension of the interaction sdpf-u that makes it possible to mix configurations with different Nhw or equivalently with different number of particles promoted from the sd-shell to the pf-shell. It allows to connect the classical sd-shell calculations below N=18 with the sd(protons)-pf(neutrons) calculations beyond N=24-26, for all the isotopes from Oxygen to Calcium, using the same interaction. For some isotopes this range contains all the nuclei between the proton and the neutron drip lines…
Large Scale Shell Model calculations (SM-CI) predict that the region of deformation which comprises the heaviest Chromium and Iron isotopes at and beyond N=40 will merge with a new one at N=50 in an astonishing parallel to the N=20 and N=28 case in the Neon and Magnesium isotopes. We propose a valence space including the full pf-shell for the protons and the full sdg shell for the neutrons; which represents a comeback of the the harmonic oscillator shells in the very neutron rich regime. The onset of deformation is understood in the framework of the algebraic SU3-like structures linked to quad…
The neutron-rich isotopes $^{58-63}$Cr were produced for the first time at the ISOLDE facility and their masses were measured with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. The new values are up to 300 times more precise than those in the literature and indicate significantly different nuclear structure from the new mass-surface trend. A gradual onset of deformation is found in this proton and neutron mid-shell region, which is a gateway to the second island of inversion around \emph{N}=40. In addition to comparisons with density-functional theory and large-scale shell-model calculations, we present predicti…
A recent experimental breakthrough identified the last bound neutron-rich nuclei in fluorine and neon isotopes. Based on this finding, we perform a theoretical study of $Z=9, 10, 11, 12$ isotopes in the relativistic mean field (RMF) model. The mean field parameters are assumed from the PK1 parameterization, and the pairing correlation is described by the particle number conservation BCS (FBCS) method recently formulated in the RMF model. We show that the FBCS approach plays an essential role in reproducing experimental results of fluorine and neon isotopes. Furthermore, we predict $^{39}$Na an…
The production of radioactive isotopes by interactions of cosmic-ray particles with sodium iodide (NaI) crystals can produce radioactive backgrounds in detectors used to search for rare events. Through controlled irradiation of NaI crystals with a neutron beam that matches the cosmic-ray neutron spectrum, followed by direct counting and fitting the resulting spectrum across a broad range of energies, we determined the integrated production rate of several long-lived radioisotopes. The measurements were then extrapolated to determine the sea-level cosmogenic neutron activation rate, including t…
The exotic, neutron-rich and weakly-bound isotope $^{29}$F stands out as a waymarker on the southern shore of the island of inversion, a portion of the nuclear chart where the effects of nuclear forces lead to a reshuffling of the single particle levels and to a reorganization of the nuclear structure far from stability. This nucleus has become very popular, as new measurements allow to refine theoretical models. We review the latest developments and suggest how to further assess the structure by proposing predictions on electromagnetic transitions that new experiments of Relativistic Coulomb …
Isomeric states in 59,61Ti have been populated in the projectile fragmentation of a 345 AMeV 238U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The decay lifetimes and delayed gamma-ray transitions were measured with the EURICA array. Besides the known isomeric state in 59Ti, two isomeric states in 61Ti are observed for the first time. Based on the measured lifetimes, transition multipolarities as well as tentative spins and parities are assigned. Large-scale shell model calculations based on the modified LNPS interaction show that both 59Ti and 61Ti belong to the Island of Inversion at N=40 w…
First results are reported on the ground state configurations of the neutron-rich $^{29,30}$Na isotopes, obtained via Coulomb dissociation (CD) measurements as a method of the direct probe. The invariant mass spectra of those nuclei have been obtained through measurement of the four-momentum of all decay products after Coulomb excitation on a $^{208}Pb$ target at energies of 400-430 MeV/nucleon using FRS-ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI, Darmstadt. Integrated Coulomb-dissociation cross-sections (CD) of 89 $(7)$ mb and 167 $(13)$ mb up to excitation energy of 10 MeV for one neutron removal from $^{29}$…
We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the N…
We predict the limits of existence of atomic nuclei, the proton and neutron drip lines, from the light through medium-mass regions. Starting from a chiral two- and three-nucleon interaction with good saturation properties, we use the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group to calculate ground-state and separation energies from helium to iron, nearly 700 isotopes in total. We use the available experimental data to quantify the theoretical uncertainties for our ab initio calculations towards the drip lines. Where the drip lines are known experimentally, our predictions are consi…
We present the mass excesses of 59-64Cr, obtained from recent time-of-flight nuclear mass measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The mass of 64Cr is determined for the first time, with an atomic mass excess of -33.48(44) MeV. We find a significantly different two-neutron separation energy S2n trend for neutron-rich isotopes of chromium, removing the previously observed enhancement in binding at N=38. Additionally, we extend the S2n trend for chromium to N=40, revealing behavior consistent with the previously identified island of inversio…
We describe the "islands of inversion" that occur when approaching the neutron drip line around the magic numbers N=20, N=28 and N=40 in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model in very large valence spaces. We explain these configuration inversions (and the associated shape transitions) as the result of the competition between the spherical mean field (monopole) which favors magicity and the correlations (multipole) which favor deformed intruder states. We also show that the N=20 and N=28 islands are in reallity a single one, which for the Magnesium isotopes is limited by N=18 and N=32.
Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of $^{82}$Zr and $^{84}$Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of $\sim 10$ keV, and the masses of $^{79}$Y, $^{81}$Zr, and $^{83}$Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. %The latter differ significantly from their literature values. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced lo…
Background: In the "island of inversion", ground states of neutron-rich $sd$-shell nuclei exhibit strong admixtures of intruder configurations from the $fp$ shell. The nucleus $^{30}$Mg, located at the boundary of the island of inversion, serves as a cornerstone to track the structural evolution as one approaches this region. Purpose: Spin-parity assignments for excited states in $^{30}$Mg, especially negative-parity levels, have yet to be established. In the present work, the nuclear structure of $^{30}$Mg was investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy mainly focusing on firm spin-parity de…
Low values of the fusion cross sections and very short half-lives of nuclei with Z$>$120 put obstacles in synthesis of new elements. Different nuclear reactions (fusion of stable and radioactive nuclei, multi-nucleon transfers and neutron capture), which could be used for the production of new isotopes of superheavy (SH) elements, are discussed in the paper. The gap of unknown SH nuclei, located between the isotopes which were produced earlier in the cold and hot fusion reactions, can be filled in fusion reactions of $^{48}$Ca with available lighter isotopes of Pu, Am, and Cm. Cross sections f…
The $^{22}$Ne(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Na reaction takes part in the neon-sodium cycle of hydrogen burning. This cycle is active in asymptotic giant branch stars as well as in novae and contributes to the nucleosythesis of neon and sodium isotopes. In order to reduce the uncertainties in the predicted nucleosynthesis yields, new experimental efforts to measure the $^{22}$Ne(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Na cross section directly at the astrophysically relevant energies are needed. In the present work, a feasibility study for a $^{22}$Ne(p,$γ$)$^{23}$Na experiment at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUN…
Lying at the lower edge of the `island of inversion', neutron-rich Fluorine isotopes ($^{29-31}$F) provide a curious case to study the configuration mixing in this part of the nuclear landscape. Recent studies have suggested that a prospective two-neutron halo in the dripline nucleus $^{31}$F could be linked to the occupancy of the $pf$ intruder configurations. Focusing on configuration mixing, matter radii and neutron-neutron ($nn$) correlations in the ground-state of $^{31}$F, we explore various scenarios to analyze its possible halo nature as well as the low-lying electric dipole ($E$1) res…
Excited states in the $N=40$ isotone $^{62}$Ti were populated via the $^{63}$V$(p,2p)$$^{62}$Ti reaction at $\sim$200~MeV/u at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using $γ$-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^{+}_{\mathrm{gs}}$ and $4^+_1 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed $^{62}$Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring $^{64}$Cr and $^{66}$Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-mode…
