Observations continue to support the interpretation of the anomalous microwave foreground as electric dipole radiation from spinning dust grains as proposed by Draine and Lazarian (1998ab). In this paper we present a refinement of the original model by improving the treatment of a number of physical effects. First, we consider a disk-like grain rotating with angular velocity at an arbitrary angle with respect to the grain symmetry axis and derive the rotational damping and excitation coefficients arising from infrared emission, plasma-grain interactions and electric dipole emission. The angular velocity distribution and the electric dipole emission spectrum for grains is calculated using the Langevin equation, for cases both with and without fast internal relaxation. Our results show that, the peak emissivity of spinning dust, compared to earlier studies, increases by a factor of ~2 for the Warm Neutral Medium (WNM), the Warm Ionized Medium (WIM), the Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) and the Photodissociation Region (PDR), and by a factor ~4 for Reflection Nebulae (RN). The frequency at the emission peak also increases by factors ~1.4 to ~2 for these media. The increased emission and peak frequency result from the non-sphericity of grain shape and from the anisotropy in damping and excitation along directions parallel and perpendicular to the grain symmetry axis. Second, we provide a detailed numerical study including transient spin-up of grains by single-ion collisions. The impulses broaden the emission spectrum and increase the peak emissivity for the CNM, WNM and WIM. In addition, we present an improved treatment of rotational excitation and damping by infrared emission.
Radio observations of some Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star envelopes show the excess emission at frequencies below 100 GHz which cannot be explained by thermal dust emission (hereafter anomalous microwave emission-AME). Moreover, AGB envelopes are a common place where gas molecules condense to form nanoparticles (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and large grains. In this paper, we will study whether electric dipole emission from rapidly spinning nanoparticles can reproduce the AME observed toward AGB stars. To properly model the size distribution of nanoparticles in the AGB envelope,…
Spinning dust grains in front of the bright Galactic synchrotron background can produce a weak absorption signal that could affect measurements of high redshift 21 cm absorption. At frequencies near 80 MHz where the EDGES experiment has reported 21\,cm absorption at $z \approx 17$, absorption could be produced by interstellar nanoparticles with radii $a \approx 50Å$ in the cold interstellar medium at temperature $T \approx 50$ K. Atmospheric aerosols could contribute additional absorption. The strength of the absorption depends on the abundance of such grains and on their dipole moments, which…
Context. Excess microwave emission, commonly known as anomalous microwave emission (AME), is now routinely detected in the Milky Way. Although its link with the rotation of interstellar (carbonaceous) nano-grains seems to be relatively well established at cloud scales, large-scale observations show a lack of correlation between the different tracers of nano-carbons and AME, which has led the community to question the viability of this link. Aims. Using ancillary data and spinning dust models for nano-carbons and nano-silicates, we explore the extent to which the AME that come out of the Galact…
We investigate the impact of anomalous microwave emission (AME) on the radio-millimeter spectral energy distribution for three typical interstellar medium (ISM) conditions surrounding star-forming regions -- cold neutral medium, warm neutral medium, and photodissociation region -- by comparing the emissivities of three major contributors: free-free, thermal dust emission, and AME. In particular, for spinning nanoparticles (i.e., potential carriers of AME), we consider a known grain destruction mechanism due to a centrifugal force from spin-up processes caused by collisions between dust grains …

In a previous work, Hoang and Tram discovered a new mechanism for destruction of nanoparticles due to suprathermal rotation of grains in stationary C-shocks, which is termed rotational disruption. In this paper, we extend our previous study for non-stationary shocks driven by outflows and young supernovae remnants that have dynamical ages shorter than the time required to establish a stationary C-shock, which is composed of a C-shock and a J-shock tail (referred as CJ-shock). For the C-shock component, we find that smallest nanoparticles (size $\lesssim 1$ nm) of weak materials (i.e., tensile …
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nanoparticles are expected to play an important role in many astrophysical processes due to its dominant surface area, including gas heating, chemistry, star formation , and anomalous microwave emission. In dense magnetized molecular clouds where C-shocks are present, PAHs and nanoparticles are widely believed to originate from grain shattering due to grain-grain collisions. The remaining question is whether these nanoparticles can survive in the dense and hot shocked regions, and how to constrain their size and abundance with observations. In this p…
Electric dipole emission from rapidly spinning polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is widely believed as an origin of anomalous microwave emission (AME), but recently it encounters a setback due to the non-correlation of AME with PAH abundance seen in a full-sky analysis. Microwave observations for specific regions with well-constrained PAH features would be crucial to test the spinning dust hypothesis. In this paper, we present physical modeling of microwave emission from spinning PAHs from protoplanetary disks (PPDs) around Herbig Ae/Be stars and T-Tauri stars where PAH features are well…
We study the anomalous microwave emission (AME) in the Lynds Dark Nebula (LDN) 1780 on two angular scales. Using available ancillary data at an angular resolution of 1 degree, we construct an SED between 0.408 GHz to 2997 GHz. We show that there is a significant amount of AME at these angular scales and the excess is compatible with a physical spinning dust model. We find that LDN 1780 is one of the clearest examples of AME on 1 degree scales. We detected AME with a significance > 20$σ$. We also find at these angular scales that the location of the peak of the emission at frequencies between 2…
Alignment of dust grains in astrophysical environments results in the polarization of starlight as well as the polarization of radiation emitted by dust. We demonstrate the advances in grain alignment theory allow the use of linear and circular polarization to probe not only the magnetic field, but also dust composition, the dust environment, etc. We revisit the process of grain alignment by Radiative Torques (RATs) and focus on constraining magnetic susceptibility of grains via observations. We discuss the possibility of observational testing of the magnetic properties of grains as the alignm…
The azimuthal polarization patterns observed in some protoplanetary disks by ALMA at millimeter wavelength have raised doubts about their being produced by dust grains aligned with the magnetic field lines. These conclusions were based on the calculations of dust polarized emission in the Rayleigh regime, i.e. for grain sizes much smaller than the wavelength. However, the grain size in such disks is estimated to be typically in the range 0.1 - 1 mm from independent observations. We study the dust polarization properties of aligned grains in emission in the Mie regime, i.e. when the mean grain …
The Submm and mm Excess of the SMC: Magnetic Dipole Emission from Magnetic Nanoparticles?
Rapidly spinning magnetic grains can acquire large magnetic dipole moments due to the Barnett effect. Here we study the new effect of Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction on grain-grain collisions and grain growth, assuming grains spun up by radiative torques. We find that the collision rate between grains having embedded iron inclusions can be significantly enhanced due to Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction when grains rotate suprathermally by radiative torques. We discuss the implications of enhanced collision rate for grain growth and destruction in the circumstellar envelope …
Anomalous microwave emission (AME) is a category of Galactic signals that cannot be explained by synchrotron radiation, thermal dust emission, or optically thin free-free radiation. Spinning dust is one variety of AME that could be partially polarized and therefore relevant for ongoing and future cosmic microwave background polarization studies. The Planck satellite mission identified candidate AME regions in approximately $1^\circ$ patches that were found to have spectra generally consistent with spinning dust grain models. The spectra for one of these regions, G107.2+5.2, was also consistent…
We study the effect of anisotropic radiation illumination on the alignment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and report that cross-sectional mechanism of alignment earlier considered in terms of gas-grain interactions can also be efficient for the photon-grain interaction. We demonstrate this by first calculating the angle-dependence rotational damping and excitation coefficients by photon absorption followed by infrared emission. We then calculate the degree of PAH alignment for the different environments and physical parameters, including the illumination direction, ionization fract…
The anomalous microwave emission (AME) still lacks a conclusive explanation. This excess of emission, roughly between 10 and 50 GHz, tends to defy attempts to explain it as synchrotron or free-free emission. The overlap with frequencies important for cosmic microwave background explorations, combined with a strong correlation with interstellar dust, drive cross-disciplinary collaboration between interstellar medium and observational cosmology. The apparent relationship with dust has prompted a ``spinning dust'' hypothesis. The typical peak frequency range of the AME profile implicates spinning…
Interstellar Silicon Depletion and the Ultraviolet Extinction
Spinning small silicate grains were recently invoked to account for the Galactic foreground anomalous microwave emission. These grains, if present, will absorb starlight in the far ultraviolet (UV). There is also renewed interest in attributing the enigmatic 2175 Angstrom interstellar extinction bump to small silicates. To probe the role of silicon in the UV extinction, we explore the relations between the amount of silicon required to be locked up in silicates [Si/H]_{dust} and the 2175 Angstrom bump or the far-UV extinction rise, based on an analysis of the extinction curves along 46 Galacti…
Anomalous microwave emission at 20-40 GHz has been detected across our Galactic sky. It is highly correlated with thermal dust emission and hence it is thought to be due to spinning dust grains. Alternatively, this emission could be due to synchrotron radiation with a flattening (hard) spectral index. We cross-correlate synchrotron, free-free and thermal dust templates with the WMAP 7-year maps using synchrotron templates at both 408 MHz and 2.3 GHz to assess the amount of flat synchrotron emission that is present, and the impact that this has on the correlations with the other components. We …
The anomalous microwave emission (AME) still lacks a conclusive explanation. This excess of emission, roughly between 10 and 50 GHz, correlates spatially with interstellar dust, prompting a "spinning dust" hypothesis: electric dipole emission by rapidly rotating, small dust grains. The typical peak frequency range of the AME profile implicates grains on the order of ~1 nm, suggesting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules (PAHs). We compare AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC), with its thorough PAH-band coverage, to AME intensity estimates from the Planck Collaboration, in the λ Orionis region. We …
In the evolutionary path of interstellar medium inquiry, many new species of interstellar dust have been modeled and discovered. The modes by which these species interact and evolve are beginning to be understood, but in recent years a peculiar new feature has appeared in microwave surveys. Anomalous microwave emission (AME), appearing between 10 and 90 GHz, has been correlated with thermal dust emission, leading to the popular suggestion that this anomaly is electric dipole emission from spinning dust. The observed frequencies suggest that spinning grains should be on the order of 1 nm in siz…
Cm-wavelength radio continuum emission in excess of free-free, synchrotron and Rayleigh-Jeans dust emission (excess microwave emission, EME), and often called `anomalous microwave emission', is bright in molecular cloud regions exposed to UV radiation, i.e. in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). The EME correlates with IR dust emission on degree angular scales. Resolved observations of well-studied PDRs are needed to compare the spectral variations of the cm-continuum with tracers of physical conditions and of the dust grain population. The EME is particularly bright in the regions of the rho O…
Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME) is a component of diffuse Galactic radiation observed at frequencies in the range $\approx 10$-60 GHz. AME was first detected in 1996 and recognised as an additional component of emission in 1997. Since then, AME has been observed by a range of experiments and in a variety of environments. AME is spatially correlated with far-IR thermal dust emission but cannot be explained by synchrotron or free-free emission mechanisms, and is far in excess of the emission contributed by thermal dust emission with the power-law opacity consistent with the observed emission …

Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME) is a significant component of Galactic diffuse emission in the frequency range $10$-$60\,$GHz and a new window into the properties of sub-nanometre-sized grains in the interstellar medium. We investigate the morphology of AME in the $\approx10^{\circ}$ diameter $λ$ Orionis ring by combining intensity data from the QUIJOTE experiment at $11$, $13$, $17$ and $19\,$GHz and the C-Band All Sky Survey (C-BASS) at $4.76\,$GHz, together with 19 ancillary datasets between $1.42$ and $3000\,$GHz. Maps of physical parameters at $1^{\circ}$ resolution are produced throug…
IR-correlated 31 GHz radio emission from Orion East
对4.85 GHz的GB 6测量图的分析得出自由-自由发射的$3σ$上限为7.2 mJ光束$^{-1}$($\la 30 per cent of the observed flux) at the CBI resolution. The bulk of the 31 GHz flux therefore appears to be mostly due to dust radiation. Aperture photometry, at an angular resolution of 13 arcmin and with an aperture of diameter 30 arcmin, all…
