I consider the question of possible observability of the total number of e-folds accumulated during the epoch of inflation. The total number of observable e-folds has been previously constrained by the de Sitter entropy after inflation, assuming that the null energy condition (NEC) holds. The NEC is violated by upward fluctuations of the local Hubble rate, which occur with high probability in the fluctuation-dominated regime of inflation. These fluctuations lead at late times to the formation of black holes and thus limit the observability of inflationary evolution. I compute the maximum number <Delta N> of e-folds that can be observed in principle through measurements of the CMB at arbitrarily late times (if the dark energy disappears). The calculation also provides a reasonably precise definition of the boundary of the fluctuation-dominated regime, with an uncertainty of a few percent. In simple models of single-field inflation compatible with current CMB observations, I find <Delta N> of order 10^5. This upper bound on the observable e-folds, although model-dependent, is much smaller than the de Sitter entropy after inflation. The method of calculation can be used in other models of single-field inflation.
We explore a cosmological model in which the time scale is variable with the expansion of the universe and the effective spacetime is driven by the inflaton field. An example is considered and their predictions are contrasted between Planck 2018 data. We calculate the spectrum indices and the slow-rolling parameters of the effective potential. The results are in very good agreement with observations.
We elaborate on the functional integral describing the stochastic dynamics of a spectator field during inflation, comparing its diagrammatic expansion to that obtained directly from a perturbative solution of the corresponding Langevin equation. We state Feynman rules for computing arbitrary temporal $n$-point functions and perform some illustrative computations for a $λϕ^4$ interaction, paying attention to the role played by a functional Jacobian determinant in the path integral. We also briefly consider the case when the field contributes to the expansion rate, making the noise multiplicativ…
According to the common wisdom, between a fraction of the mHz and few Hz the spectral energy density of the inflationary gravitons can be safely disregarded even assuming the most optimistic sensitivities of the space-borne detectors. In this analysis we show that this conclusion is evaded if, prior to nucleosynthesis, the post-inflationary evolution includes a sequence of stages expanding either faster or slower than radiation. As a consequence, contrary to the conventional lore, it is shown that below a fraction of the Hz the spectral energy density of the relic gravitons may exceed (even by…
Purely geometrical arguments show that there exist classes of homospectral inflationary cosmologies, i.e. different expansion histories producing the same spectrum of comoving curvature perturbations. We develop a general algorithm to reconstruct the potential of minimally-coupled single scalar fields from an arbitrary expansion history. We apply it to homospectral expansion histories to obtain the corresponding potentials, providing numerical and analytical examples. The infinite class of homospectral potentials depends on two free parameters, the initial energy scale and the initial value of…
Inflationary cosmology and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe in non-minimal Yang-Mills-$F(R)$ gravity and non-minimal vector-$F(R)$ gravity
We analytically study the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped trap with an increasing central radius. The evolution of the ground state is described using a scaling transform. Additionally, the dynamics of excited azimuthal modes over the varying ground state is analyzed through a generalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. Our results explain some of the features observed in recent experiments focused on testing the applicability of the system as a parallel of cosmological inflationary models. The radial dynamics, which corresponds to the inflaton field of the co…
Due to the accelerated expansion of the universe, the possibility of formation of singularities has changed from the classical Big Bang and Big Crunch singularities to include a number of new scenarios. In recent papers it has been shown that such singularities may appear in inflationary cosmological models with a fractional power scalar field potential. In this paper we enlarge the analysis of singularities in scalar field cosmological models by the use of generalised power expansions of their Hubble scalar and their scalar field in order to describe all possible models leading to a singulari…
We develop a method for computing series expansions for solutions to ordinary differential equations when the asymptotic form contains both linear and logarithmic terms. Such situations are common in primordial cosmology when considering series expansions out of a singularity in the equations arising from a pre-inflationary phase of the universe. We develop mathematical techniques for generating these series expansions, and apply them to polynomial and Starobinsky inflationary potentials with kinetic initial conditions. Code for analytic and numerical computation of logolinear series is provid…
We introduce the concept of inflationary twin models, that is, a class of generalized (kinetic or "K-inflation") field theories which lead exactly to the same cosmological evolution during the inflationary period as a given standard scalar field theory of inflation. The twin concept permits to introduce generalized, K-inflation theories in a controlled manner, maintaining some inflationary predictions unaltered. Further, this concept allows to extend analytical tools like the slow-roll expansion to the realm of K-inflation theories, facilitating their investigation. Twins of a standard scalar …
Matching Scherrer's k essence argument with alterations of Di Quark scalar fields permitting an eventual comological constant dominated inflationary expansion
We propose a mechanism for generating an inflationary phase in the early universe without resorting to any type of scalar field(s). Instead, this accelerated expansion is driven by a dynamical "cosmological constant" in the framework of unimodular gravity. The time dependent cosmological constant can be related to an energy diffusion term that arises naturally in unimodular gravity due to its restrictive diffeomorphism invariance. We derive the generic conditions required for any type of diffusion to generate a realistic inflationary epoch. Furthermore, for a given parameterization of inflatio…
Cosmic inflation, which describes an accelerated expansion of the early Universe, yields the most successful predictions regarding temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Nevertheless, the precise origin of the primordial perturbations and their quantum-to-classical transition is still an open issue. The continuous spontaneous localization model (CSL), in the cosmological context, might be used to provide a solution to the mentioned puzzles by considering an objective reduction of the inflaton wave function. In this work, we calculate the primordial power spectrum at…
