A local convergence analysis of Newton's method for solving nonlinear equations, under a majorant condition, is presented in this paper. Without assuming convexity of the derivative of the majorant function, which relaxes the Lipschitz condition on the operator under consideration, convergence, the biggest range for uniqueness of the solution, the optimal convergence radius and results on the convergence rate are established. Besides, two special cases of the general theory are presented as an application.
As a follow-up of a previous work of the authors, this work considers {\em uniform global time-renormalization functions} for the {\em gravitational} $N$-body problem. It improves on the estimates of the radii of convergence obtained therein by using a completely different technique, both for the solution to the original equations and for the solution of the renormalized ones. The aforementioned technique which the new estimates are built upon is known as {\em majorants} and allows for an easy application of simple operations on power series. The new radii of convergence so-obtained are approx…
This paper studies the performance Newton's iteration applied with Anderson acceleration for solving the incompressible steady Navier-Stokes equations. We manifest that this method converges superlinearly with a good initial guess, and moreover, a large Anderson depth decelerates the convergence speed comparing to a small Anderson depth. We observe that the numerical tests confirm these analytical convergence results, and in addition, Anderson acceleration sometimes enlarges the domain of convergence for Newton's method.
This paper primarily presents numerical results for the Anderson accelerated Newton method on a set of benchmark problems. The results demonstrate superlinear convergence to solutions of both degenerate and nondegenerate problems. The convergence for nondegenerate problems is also justified theoretically. For degenerate problems, those whose Jacobians are singular at a solution, the domain of convergence is studied. It is observed in that setting that Newton-Anderson has a domain of convergence similar to Newton, but it may be attracted to a different solution than Newton if the problems are s…
The motive of this paper is to discuss the local convergence of a two-step Newton type method of convergence rate three for solving nonlinear equations in Banach spaces. It is assumed that the first order derivative of nonlinear operator satisfies the generalized Lipschitz i.e. $L$-average condition. Also, some results on convergence of the same method in Banach spaces are established under the assumption that the derivative of the operators satisfies the radius or center Lipschitz condition with a weak $L$-average particularly it is assumed that $L$ is positive integrable function but not nec…
In this paper, we consider the Newton-Schur method in Hilbert space and obtain quadratic convergence. For the symmetric elliptic eigenvalue problem discretized by the standard finite element method and non-overlapping domain decomposition method, we use the Steklov-Poincaré operator to reduce the eigenvalue problem on the domain $Ω$ into the nonlinear eigenvalue subproblem on $Γ$, which is the union of subdomain boundaries. We prove that the convergence rate for the Newton-Schur method is $ε_{N}\leq CH^{2}(1+\ln(H/h))^{2}ε^{2}$, where the constant $C$ is independent of the fine mesh size $h$ a…
We propose a new modification of Newton iteration for finding some nonnegative Z-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor. The method has local quadratic convergence to a nonnegative eigenpair of a nonnegative tensor, under the usual assumption guaranteeing the local quadratic convergence of the original Newton iteration.
Some fractional Newton methods have been proposed in order to find roots of nonlinear equations using fractional derivatives. In this paper we introduce a fractional Newton method with order $α+1$ and compare with another fractional Newton method with order $2α$. We also introduce a fractional Traub method with order $2α+1$ and compare with its first step (fractional Newton method with order $α+1$). Some tests and analysis of the dependence on the initial estimations are made for each case.

Newton method is one of the most powerful methods for finding solutions of nonlinear equations and for proving their existence. In its "pure" form it has fast convergence near the solution, but small convergence domain. On the other hand damped Newton method has slower convergence rate, but weaker conditions on the initial point. We provide new versions of Newton-like algorithms, resulting in combinations of Newton and damped Newton method with special step-size choice, and estimate its convergence domain. Under some assumptions the convergence is global. Explicit complexity results are also a…
In this paper, applying the Newton method, we transform the complex continuous-time algebraic Riccati matrix equation into a Lyapunov equation. Then, we introduce an efficient general alternating-direction implicit (GADI) method to solve the Lyapunov equation. The inexact Newton-GADI method is presented to save computational amount effectively. Moreover, we analyze the convergence of the Newton-GADI method. The convergence rate of the Newton-GADI and Newton-ADI methods is compared by analyzing their spectral radii. Furthermore, we give a way to select the quasi-optimal parameter. Corresponding…
The nonlinear eigen-problem $ Ax+F(x)=λx$ is studied where $A$ is an $n\times n$ irreducible Stieltjes matrix. Under certain conditions, this problem has a unique positive solution. We show that, starting from a multiple of the positive eigenvector of $A$, the Newton-like iteration for this problem converges monotonically. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of this Newton-like method.
Fast convergent, accurate, computationally efficient, parallelizable, and robust matrix inversion and parameter estimation algorithms are required in many time-critical and accuracy-critical applications such as system identification, signal and image processing, network and big data analysis, machine learning and in many others. This paper introduces new composite power series expansion with optionally chosen rates (which can be calculated simultaneously on parallel units with different computational capacities) for further convergence rate improvement of high order Newton-Schulz iteration. The renewed interest in Steepest Descent (SD) methods following the work of Barzilai and Borwein [IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, 8 (1988)] has driven us to consider a globalization strategy based on SD, which is applicable to any line-search method. In particular, we combine Newton-type directions with scaled SD steps to have suitable descent directions. Scaling the SD directions with a suitable step length makes a significant difference with respect to similar globalization approaches, in terms of both theoretical features and computational behavior. We apply our strategy to Newton's meth…
In a recent joint work, the author has developed a modification of Newton's method, named New Q-Newton's method, which can avoid saddle points and has quadratic rate of convergence. While good theoretical convergence guarantee has not been established for this method, experiments on small scale problems show that the method works very competitively against other well known modifications of Newton's method such as Adaptive Cubic Regularization and BFGS, as well as first order methods such as Unbounded Two-way Backtracking Gradient Descent. In this paper, we resolve the convergence guarantee iss…

Stochastic variance reduction algorithms have recently become popular for minimizing the average of a large, but finite number of loss functions. The present paper proposes a Riemannian stochastic quasi-Newton algorithm with variance reduction (R-SQN-VR). The key challenges of averaging, adding, and subtracting multiple gradients are addressed with notions of retraction and vector transport. We present convergence analyses of R-SQN-VR on both non-convex and retraction-convex functions under retraction and vector transport operators. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on the Karcher mean compu…
