Strong meridional mixing induced by rapid rotation is one reason why all hot main-sequence stars are not chemically peculiar. However, the finding that the He-strong CP star HR 7355 is a rapid rotator complicates this concept. Our goal is to explain the observed behaviour of HR 7355 based on period analysis of all available photometry. Over two years, we acquired 114 new BV observations of HR 7355 at observatories in Arizona, U.S.A and Cape Town, South Africa. We performed period analyses of the new observations along with new analyses of 732 archival measurements from the Hipparcos and ASAS projects. We find that the light curves of HR 7355 in various filters are quite similar, with amplitudes 0.035(4), 0.036(4), and 0.038(3) mag in B, Hp and V, respectively. The light curves are double-peaked, with unevenly deep minima. We substantially refine the rotational period to be P=0.5214410(4) d, indicating that HR 7355 is the most rapidly rotating CP star known. Our period analyses reveal a possible lengthening of the rotational period with dP/dt/P = 2.4(8)x 10^-6/yr. We conclude that the shape and amplitude of HR 7355 light curves are typical of magnetic He-strong CP stars, for which light variations are the result of photospheric spots on the surface of a rotating star. We hypothesise that the light variations are caused mainly by an uneven distribution of overabundant helium on the star's surface. We briefly describe and discuss the cause of the rapid rotational braking of the star.
Two magnetic braking models are implemented in MESA for use in the MIST stellar model grids. Stars less than about 1.3 $M_{\odot}$ are observed to spin down over time through interaction with their magnetized stellar winds (i.e., magnetic braking). This is the basis for gyrochronology, and fundamental to the evolution of lower mass stars. The detailed physics behind magnetic braking are uncertain, as are 1D stellar evolution models. Thus, we calibrate our models and compare to data from open clusters. Each braking model tested here is capable of reproducing the data, albeit with some important…
The color-magnitude diagrams of many Magellanic Cloud clusters (with ages up to 2 billion years) display extended turnoff regions where the stars leave the main sequence, suggesting the presence of multiple stellar populations with ages which may differ even by hundreds million years (Mackey et al. 2008, Milone et al. 2009, Girardi et al. 2011). A strongly debated question is whether such an extended turnoff is instead due to populations with different stellar rotations (Girardi et al. 2011, Goudfrooij et al. 2011, Rubele et al. 2013, Li et al. 2014). The recent discovery of a `split' main seq…

We demonstrate that rapidly rotating bipolytropic (composite polytropic) stars and toroidal disks can be obtained using Hachisu's self consistent field technique. The core and the envelope in such a structure can have different polytropic indices and also different average molecular weights. The models converge for high $T/|W|$ cases, where T is the kinetic energy and W is the gravitational energy of the system. The agreement between our numerical solutions with known analytical as well as previously calculated numerical results is excellent. We show that the uniform rotation lowers the maximu…

The importance of stellar rotation in setting the observed properties of young star clusters has become clearer over the past decade, with rotation being identified as the main cause of the observed extended main sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon and split main-sequences. Additionally, young star clusters are observed to host large fractions of rapidly rotating Be stars, many of which are seen nearly equator-on through decretion disks that cause self-extinction (the so called "shell stars"). Recently, a new phenomenon has been reported in the $\sim1.5$ Gyr star cluster NGC 1783, where a fra…
We constrain the orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$) distribution of low-mass detached main-sequence eclipsing binaries (EBs) with light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which provides a well-understood selection function and sensitivity to faint stars. At short periods ($P_{\rm orb}\lesssim 2$ days), binaries are predicted to evolve significantly due to magnetic braking (MB), which shrinks orbits and ultimately brings detached binaries into contact. The period distribution is thus a sensitive probe of MB. We find that the intrinsic period distribution of low-mass ($0.1\lesssim M_1/…
The neutron star low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) AX J1745.6-2901 was detected an anomalously fast decrease of orbital period. The decreasing rate of orbital period exceeds the contribution of all processes extracting angular momentum from the binary star in standard model. Using SCENARIO MACHINE code we conducted a population synthesis study of X-ray novae with neutron stars to investigate a possible formation and evolution of such binaries. Such close LMXBs should experience a preceding common envelope stage, in which the magnetic fields of the low mass main-sequence donor stars can be dramatica…
One of the most important problems in the context of cataclysmic variables (CVs) is the lack of observations of systems with periods between 2 and 3.12 hours, known as the period gap. The orbital evolution of CVs with periods shorter than those in the gap is dominated by gravitational radiation while for periods exceeding those of the gap it is dominated by magnetic braking of the secondary star. Spruit & Ritter (1983) showed that as periods approach 3 hours and secondary stars become fully convective a sharp decline in magnetic dynamo and braking efficiency would result in such a gap. Recent …
HD 142990 (V 913 Sco; B5 V) is a He-weak star with a strong surface magnetic field and a short rotation period ($P_{\rm rot} \sim 1$ d). While it is clearly a rapid rotator, recent determinations of $P_{\rm rot}$ are in formal disagreement. In this paper we collect magnetic and photometric data with a combined 40-year baseline in order to re-evaluate $P_{\rm rot}$ and examine its stability. Both period analysis of individual datasets and $O-C$ analysis of the photometric data demonstrate that $P_{\rm rot}$ has decreased over the past 30 years, violating expectations from magnetospheric braking…
We analyze {\it K2} light curves for 794 low-mass ($1 > M_* > 0.1$ $M_{\odot}$) members of the $\approx$650-Myr-old open cluster Praesepe, and measure rotation periods ($P_{rot}$) for 677 of these stars. We find that half of the rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars are confirmed or candidate binary systems. The remaining $>0.3$ $M_{\odot}$ fast rotators have not been searched for companions, and are therefore not confirmed single stars. We found previously that nearly all rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars in the Hyades are binaries, but we require deeper binary searches in Praesep…
To fully understand the Be star phenomenon, one must have a reasonable degree of knowledge about the star beneath the disk, which is often found to be rapidly rotating. Rapid rotation complicates modelling because fundamental properties like the stellar luminosity and effective temperature require knowledge of the angle of inclina- tion at which the star is observed. Furthermore our knowledge of the structure of rapidly rotating stars is on a less sure foundation than for non-rotating stars. The uncertainties in the inclination and the surface properties of a few rapidly rotating stars have be…
Matching the Spectral Energy Distribution and p Mode Oscillation Frequencies of the Rapidly Rotating Delta Scuti Star ? Ophiuchi with a 2D Rotating Stellar Model
Radial-velocities for the early-type stars in the Pleiades cluster have always been challenging to measure because of the significant rotational broadening of the spectral lines. The large scatter in published velocities has led to claims that many are spectroscopic binaries, and in several cases preliminary orbital solutions have been proposed. To investigate these claims, we obtained and report here velocity measurements for 33 rapidly-rotating B, A, and early F stars in the Pleiades region, improving significantly on the precision of the historical velocities for most objects. With one or t…
Using K2 data, we have identified 23 very low mass members of the $ρ$ Oph and Upper Scorpius star-forming region as having periodic photometric variability not easily explained by well-established physical mechanisms such as star spots, eclipsing binaries, or pulsation. All of these unusual stars are mid-to-late M dwarfs without evidence of active accretion, and with photometric periods generally $<$1 day. Often the unusual light curve signature takes the form of narrow flux dips; when we also have rotation periods from star spots, the two periods agree, suggesting that the flux dips are due t…
Magnetic confinement of stellar winds leads to the formation of magnetospheres, which can be sculpted into Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs) by rotational support of the corotating plasma. The conditions required for the CMs of magnetic early B-type stars to yield detectable emission in H$α$ -- the principal diagnostic of these structures -- are poorly constrained. A key reason is that no detailed study of the magnetic and rotational evolution of this population has yet been performed. Using newly determined rotational periods, modern magnetic measurements, and atmospheric parameters determined…
As the closest open cluster to the Sun, the Hyades is an important benchmark for many stellar properties, but its members are also scattered widely over the sky. Previous studies of stellar rotation in the Hyades relied on targeted observations of single stars or data from shallower all-sky variability surveys. The re-purposed Kepler mission, K2, is the first opportunity to measure rotation periods ($P_{rot}$) for many Hyads simultaneously while also being sensitive to fully convective M dwarf members. We analyze K2 data for 65 Hyads and present $P_{rot}$ values for 48. Thirty-seven of these a…
While stellar rotation periods $P_\mathrm{rot}$ may be measured from broadband photometry, the photometric modulation becomes harder to detect for slower rotators, which could bias measurements of the long-period tail of the $P_\mathrm{rot}$ distribution. Alternatively, the $P_\mathrm{rot}$ distribution of stars can be inferred from their projected rotation velocities $v\sin i$ and radii $R$, without being biased against photometrically quiet stars. We solve this inference problem using a hierarchical Bayesian framework, which (i) is applicable to heteroscedastic measurements of $v\sin i$ and …
