We investigate the dynamics of a circumbinary disc that responds to the loss of mass and to the recoil velocity of the black hole produced by the merger of a binary system of supermassive black holes. We perform the first two-dimensional general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations of \textit{extended} non-Keplerian discs and employ a new technique to construct a "shock detector", thus determining the precise location of the shocks produced in the accreting disc by the recoiling black hole. In this way we can study how the properties of the system, such as the spin, mass and recoil velocity of the black hole, affect the mass accretion rate and are imprinted on the electromagnetic emission from these sources. We argue that the estimates of the bremsstrahlung luminosity computed without properly taking into account the radiation transfer yield cooling times that are unrealistically short. At the same time we show, through an approximation based on the relativistic isothermal evolution, that the luminosity produced can reach a peak value above $L \simeq 10^{43} \ {\rm erg/s} $ at about $\sim 30\,{\rm d}$ after the merger of a binary with total mass $M\simeq 10^6 M_\odot$ and persist for several days at values which are a factor of a few smaller. If confirmed by more sophisticated calculations such a signal could indeed lead to an electromagnetic counterpart of the merger of binary black-hole system.
In this Paper we report the discovery of CXO J122518.6+144545; a peculiar X-ray source with a position 3.6+-0.2",off-nuclear from an SDSS DR7 z=0.0447 galaxy. The 3.6" offset corresponds to 3.2 kpc at the distance of the galaxy. The 0.3-8 keV X-ray flux of this source is 5x10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and its 0.3-8 keV luminosity is 2.2x10^41 erg/s (2.7x10^41 erg/s; 0.5-10 keV) assuming the source belongs to the associated galaxy. We find a candidate optical counterpart in archival HST/ACS g'-band observations of the field containing the galaxy obtained on June 16, 2003. The observed magnitude of g'=…
Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are the products of frequent galaxy mergers. The coalescence of the SMBHBs is a distinct source of gravitational wave (GW) radiation. The detections of the strong GW radiation and their possible electromagnetic counterparts are essential. Numerical relativity suggests that the post-merger supermassive black hole (SMBH) gets a kick velocity up to 4000 km/s due to the anisotropic GW radiations. Here we investigate the dynamical co-evolution and interaction of the recoiling SMBHs and their galactic stellar environments with one million direct N-body simul…
(Abridged) We here continue our effort to model the behaviour of matter when orbiting or accreting onto a generic black hole by developing a new numerical code employing advanced techniques geared solve the equations of in general-relativistic hydrodynamics. The new code employs a number of high-resolution shock-capturing Riemann-solvers and reconstruction algorithms, exploiting the enhanced accuracy and the reduced computational cost of AMR techniques. In addition, the code makes use of sophisticated ray-tracing libraries that, coupled with general-relativistic radiation-transfer calculations…
A supermassive black hole (SMBH) ejected from the potential well of its host galaxy via gravitational wave recoil carries important information about the mass ratio and spin alignment of the pre-merger SMBH binary. Such a recoiling SMBH may be detectable as an active galactic nucleus (AGN) broad line region offset by up to 10\,kpc from a disturbed host galaxy. We describe a novel methodology using forward modeling with \texttt{The Tractor} to search for such offset AGN in a sample of 5493 optically variable AGN detected with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). We present the discovery of 9 AG…
A black hole accretion is necessarily transonic. In presence of sufficiently high viscosity and cooling effects, a low-angular momentum transonic flow can become a standard Keplerian disc except close to the where hole where it must pass through the inner sonic point. However, if the viscosity is not high everywhere and cooling is not efficient everywhere, the flow cannot completely become a Keplerian disc. In this paper, we show results of rigorous numerical simulations of a transonic flow having vertically varying viscosity parameter (being highest on the equatorial plane) and optical depth …
Detection of electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of pre-coalescence binaries has very important implications for our understanding of the evolution of these systems as well as the associated accretion physics. In addition, a combination of EM and gravitational wave signatures observed from coalescing supermassive black hole binaries (SBHBs) would provide independent measurements of redshift and luminosity distance, thus allowing for high precision cosmological measurements. However, a statistically significant sample of these objects is yet to be attained and finding them observationally has pro…
We present here a simple hydrodynamic model based on a sequence of steady states of the inner sub-Keplerian accretion disc to model its spectral states. Correlations between different hydrodynamic steady states are studied with a goal to understand the origin of, e.g., the aperiodic variabilities. The plausible source of corona/outflow close to the central compact object is shown to be a consequence of steady state transition in the underlying accretion flow. We envisage that this phenomenological model can give insight on the influence of environment on the inner sub-Keplerian accretion disc.
Many accretion discs are thought to be warped. Recent hydrodynamical simulations show that (i) discs can break into distinct planes when the amplitude of an imposed warp is sufficiently high and the viscosity sufficiently low, and that (ii) discs can tear up into discrete rings when an initially planar disc is subject to a forced precession. Previously, we investigated the local stability of isolated, Keplerian, warped discs in order to understand the physics causing an accretion disc to break into distinct planes, finding that anti-diffusion of the warp amplitude is the underlying cause. Here…
We use Chandra X-ray observations to look for evidence of a recoiling black hole from the brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 2261 (A2261-BCG). A2261-BCG is a strong candidate for a recoiling black hole because of its large, flat stellar core, revealed by Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations. We took 100-ksec observations with Chandra and combined it with 35 ksec of archival observations to look for low-level accretion onto a black hole of expected mass $M\sim10^{10}\ M_{\scriptscriptstyle \odot}$ that could possibly be located in one of four off-center stellar knots near the galaxy's cen…
We demonstrate possible optical signatures of the Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularity spacetimes representing spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the modified Hořava gravity. In such spacetimes, accretion structures significantly different from those present in the standard black hole spacetimes occur due to the "antigravity" effect causing existence of an internal static sphere surrounded by Keplerian discs. We focus our attention on the optical effects related to the Keplerian accretion discs, constructing the optical appearance of the Keplerian discs, the spectral continuum due to their…
Using the anelastic approximation of linearized hydrodynamic equations, we investigate the development of axially symmetric small perturbations in thin Keplerian discs. Dispersion relation is found as a solution of general Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem for different values of relevant physical parameters (viscosity, heat conductivity, disc semithickness). The analysis reveals the appearance of overstable mode for Prandtl parameter higher than some critical value. These modes have a viscous-convective nature and can serve as a seed for turbulence in astrophysical discs even in the absence …
Exchange of dominance between twin kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in some low-mass-X-ray-binaries (LMXB) suggests the possibility of a resonance between two oscillatory modes. We study the behaviour of the effective gravitational potential around specific resonant radii, and estimate the role of the higher-order terms governing the non-linear, anharmonic forcing. We discuss the impact it has on the mode amplitude in the linear and non--linear regimes. We also discuss a related possibility of lowering of the neutron star mass estimates from the highest observed QPO frequencies.
Using the anelastic approximation of linearised hydrodynamic equations, we investigate the development of axially symmetric small perturbations in thin Keplerian discs. The sixth-order dispersion equation is derived and numerically solved for different values of relevant physical parameters (viscosity, heat conductivity, disc semi-thickness and vertical structure). The analysis reveals the appearance of two overstable modes which split out from the classical Rayleigh inertial modes in a wide range of the parameters in both ionized and neutral gases. These modes have a viscous-convective nature…
At low redshift, the majority of supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass estimates are obtained from modeling stellar kinematics or ionized gas dynamics in the vicinity of the galaxy nucleus. For large early type galaxies, stellar kinematics models predict higher masses than gas-dynamical models. In the case of M87, this discrepancy is larger than 2 $σ$. Critical to gas-dynamical modeling is the assumed underlying dynamical state of the gas: that it lies on circular Keplerian orbits, potentially with some additional turbulent pressure support. This is inconsistent with models of the gas flow about…
We study the ejection of winds from thin accretion discs around stellar mass black holes and the time evolution of these winds in presence of radiation field generated by the accretion disc. Winds are produced by radiation, thermal pressure and the centrifugal force of the disc. The winds are found to be mildly relativistic, with speeds reaching up to terminal speeds $0.1$ for accretion rate $4$ in Eddington units. We show that the ejected matter gets its rotation by transporting angular momentum from the disc to the wind. We also show that the radiation drag affects the accretion disc winds i…
We study linear transient dynamics in a thin Keplerian disc employing a method based on variational formulation of optimisation problem. It is shown that in a shearing sheet approximation due to a prominent excitation of density waves by vortices the most rapidly growing shearing harmonic has azimuthal wavelength, $λ_y$, of order of the disc thickness, $H$, and its initial shape is always nearly identical to a vortex having the same potential vorticity. Also, in the limit $λ_y\gg H$ the optimal growth $G\propto (Ω/κ)^4$, where $Ω$ and $κ$ stand for local rotational and epicyclic frequencies, r…
In this paper, we present the time evolution of a rotationally axisymmetric gas ring around a non rotating black hole using two dimensional grid-based hydrodynamic simulation. We show the way in which angular momentum transport is included in simulations of non-self-gravitating accretion of matter towards a black hole. We use the Shakura-Sunyaev α viscosity prescription to estimate the turbulent viscosity for all major viscous stress tensors. We investigate how a gas ring which is initially assumed to rotate with Keplerian angular velocity is accreted on to a black hole and hence forms accreti…
The fact that self-confined jets are observed around black holes, neutron stars and young forming stars points to a jet launching mechanism independent of the nature of the central object, namely the surrounding accretion disc. The properties of Jet Emitting Discs (JEDs) are briefly reviewed. It is argued that, within an alpha prescription for the turbulence (anomalous viscosity and diffusivity), the steady-state problem has been solved. Conditions for launching jets are very stringent and require a large scale magnetic field $B_z$ close to equipartition with the total (gas and radiation) pres…
Origin of hydrodynamical instability and turbulence in the Keplerian accretion disc as well as similar laboratory shear flows, e.g. plane Couette flow, is a long standing puzzle. These flows are linearly stable. Here we explore the evolution of perturbation in such flows in the presence of an additional force. Such a force, which is expected to be stochastic in nature hence behaving as noise, could be result of thermal fluctuations (however small be), Brownian ratchet, grain-fluid interactions and feedback from outflows in astrophysical discs etc. We essentially establish the evolution of nonl…
We study several Galactic black hole candidates using long-time RXTE/ASM X-ray data to search for telltale signatures of differences in viscous timescales in the two components used in the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) paradigm. In high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) mainly winds are accreted. This nearly inviscid and dominant sub-Keplerian flow falls almost freely towards the black hole. A standard Keplerian disc can form out of this sub-Keplerian matter in presence of a significant viscosity and could be small in size. However, in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), highly viscous and larger…
We perform global two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of Keplerian discs with free eccentricity over thousands of orbital periods. Our aim is to determine the validity of secular theory in describing the evolution of eccentric discs, and to explore their nonlinear evolution for moderate eccentricities. Linear secular theory is found to correctly predict the structure and precession rates of discs with small eccentricities. However, discs with larger eccentricities (and eccentricity gradients) are observed to precess faster (retrograde relative to the orbital motion), at a rate that depe…
We investigate under which conditions cold, fan-shaped winds can be steadily launched from thin (Keplerian) accretion discs. Such winds are magneto-centrifugal winds launched from a thin annulus in the disc, along open magnetic field lines that fan out above the disc. In principle, such winds could be found in two situations: (1) at the interface between an inner Jet Emitting Disc, which is itself powering magneto-centrifugally driven winds, and an outer standard accretion disc; (2) at the interface between an inner closed stellar magnetosphere and the outer standard accretion disc. We refer t…
Numerous studies on hydrodynamics of the Keplerian as well as the sub-Keplerian accretion disc around a compact object (e.g., white dwarf (WD), neutron star (NS), or a black hole (BH)) attempted to explain the observed UV, soft and hard X-ray spectra. Although, when the compact object (e.g., a WD or an NS) has a finite surface, its rapid rotation, the stellar magnetic field could cause deformation of the spherical symmetry. Earlier studies for Keplerian disc showed that a deviation from the spherical symmetry of the compact object could affect the observed light curve and spectra at high frequ…

We study the accretion processes on a black hole by numerical simulation. We use a grid based finite difference code for this purpose. We scan the parameter space spanned by the specific energy and the angular momentum and compare the time-dependent solutions with those obtained from theoretical considerations. We found several important results (a) The time dependent flow behaves close to a constant height model flow in the pre-shock region and a flow with vertical equilibrium in the post-shock region. (c) The infall time scale in the post-shock region is several times higher than the free-fa…
In this review we shall comment on a few recent findings which strengthen the view that the black hole accretion has substantial amount of sub-Keplerian component. The manifestation of this component is many fold. We discuss some of them. A general outline of the complex structure that emerges from the multitude of observations is presented. A detailed outline of what might be going on in outburst sources is also discussed. The relationship amount the spectral and timing properties can be best understood by this picture. We claim that the sub-Keplerian advective disk paradigm is a complete pac…

We explore spectral properties of a Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) around a neutron star. We compute the effects of thermal Comptonization of soft photons emitted from a Keplerian disc and the boundary layer of the neutron star by the post-shock region of a sub-Keplerian flow, formed due to the centrifugal barrier. The shock location $X_s$ is also the inner edge of the Keplerian disc. We compute a series of realistic spectra assuming a set of electron temperatures of the post-shock region $T_{CE}$, the temperature of the normal boundary layer (NBOL) $T_{NS}$ of the neutron star and the sh…
We analyze several outbursts of a few transient sources using Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data (2.5-25 keV) as well as All Sky Monitor (ASM) data (1.5-12 keV) of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. We find a time delay between the arrival times of the Keplerian disc component and the halo of the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) when the spectral data is fitted with TCAF solution. We compare this time delay from the spectral fits with the TCAF solution of the transient low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) e.g., GX 339-4, H 1743-322 and MAXI J1836-194 with that of the high mass X-ra…
Using black body and power-law photon counts of All Sky Monitor (ASM) in Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite it has been established recently by us that there is a significant time lag between the infall timescales of two components in the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) paradigm, where a standard slow moving Keplerian disc is surrounded by a fast moving halo. The time lag is clearly due to the difference in viscosity in the flow components and the size of the Keplerian disc may be considered to be proportional to the arrival time lag. In this paper, using RXTE/ASM (1.5-12 keV) da…
The Event Horizon Telescope mass estimate for M87* is consistent with the stellar dynamics mass estimate, and inconsistent with the gas dynamics mass estimates by up to $2σ$. We have previously explored a new gas dynamics model that incorporated sub-Keplerian gas velocities that could in principle explain the discrepancy in the stellar and gas dynamics mass estimate. In this paper, we extend this gas dynamical model to also include non-trivial disk heights, which may also resolve the mass discrepancy independent of sub-Keplerian velocity components. By combining the existing velocity measureme…
