Geometric programming problems occur frequently in engineering design and management. In multiobjective optimization, the trade-off information between different objective functions is probably the most important piece of information in a solution process to reach the most preferred solution. In this paper we have discussed the basic concepts and principles of multiple objective optimization problems and developed a solution procedure to solve this optimization problem where the cost coefficients are continuous functions using weighted method to obtain the non-inferior solutions.
We study approximation algorithms for scheduling problems with the objective of minimizing total weighted completion time, under identical and related machine models with job precedence constraints. We give algorithms that improve upon many previous 15 to 20-year-old state-of-art results. A major theme in these results is the use of time-indexed linear programming relaxations. These are natural relaxations for their respective problems, but surprisingly are not studied in the literature. We also consider the scheduling problem of minimizing total weighted completion time on unrelated machines.…
We propose a unifying dynamic-programming framework to compute exact literal-weighted model counts of formulas in conjunctive normal form. At the center of our framework are project-join trees, which specify efficient project-join orders to apply additive projections (variable eliminations) and joins (clause multiplications). In this framework, model counting is performed in two phases. First, the planning phase constructs a project-join tree from a formula. Second, the execution phase computes the model count of the formula, employing dynamic programming as guided by the project-join tree. We…
We propose an optimal algorithm for solving the longest path problem in undirected weighted graphs. By using graph partitioning and dynamic programming, we obtain an algorithm that is significantly faster than other state-of-the-art methods. This enables us to solve instances that have previously been unsolved.
In Bayesian inference, the maximum a posteriori (MAP) problem combines the most probable explanation (MPE) and marginalization (MAR) problems. The counterpart in propositional logic is the exist-random stochastic satisfiability (ER-SSAT) problem, which combines the satisfiability (SAT) and weighted model counting (WMC) problems. Both MAP and ER-SSAT have the form $\operatorname{argmax}_X \sum_Y f(X, Y)$, where $f$ is a real-valued function over disjoint sets $X$ and $Y$ of variables. These two optimization problems request a value assignment for the $X$ variables that maximizes the weighted su…
We propose an exact algorithm for solving the longest simple path problem between two given vertices in undirected weighted graphs. By using graph partitioning and dynamic programming, we obtain an algorithm that is significantly faster than other state-of-the-art methods. This enables us to solve instances that were previously unsolved and solve hard instances significantly faster. Lastly, we present a scalable parallelization which yields the first efficient parallel algorithm for the problem.
An isomorphism between two graphs is a bijection between their vertices that preserves the edges. We consider the problem of determining whether two finite undirected weighted graphs are isomorphic, and finding an isomorphism relating them if the answer is positive. In this paper we introduce effective probabilistic linear programming (LP) heuristics to solve the graph isomorphism problem. We motivate our heuristics by showing guarantees under some conditions, and present numerical experiments that show effectiveness of these heuristics in the general case.
We develop faster approximation algorithms for Metric-TSP building on recent, nearly linear time approximation schemes for the LP relaxation [Chekuri and Quanrud, 2017]. We show that the LP solution can be sparsified via cut-sparsification techniques such as those of Benczur and Karger [2015]. Given a weighted graph $G$ with $m$ edges and $n$ vertices, and $ε> 0$, our randomized algorithm outputs with high probability a $(1+ε)$-approximate solution to the LP relaxation whose support has $\operatorname{O}(n \log n /ε^2)$ edges. The running time of the algorithm is $\operatorname{Õ}(m/ε^2)$. Thi…
In the weighted flow-time problem on a single machine, we are given a set of n jobs, where each job has a processing requirement p_j, release date r_j and weight w_j. The goal is to find a preemptive schedule which minimizes the sum of weighted flow-time of jobs, where the flow-time of a job is the difference between its completion time and its released date. We give the first pseudo-polynomial time constant approximation algorithm for this problem. The running time of our algorithm is polynomial in n, the number of jobs, and P, which is the ratio of the largest to the smallest processing requ…
We are proposing two greedy and a new linear programming based approximation algorithm for the total positive influence dominating set problem in weighted networks. Applications of this problem in weighted settings include finding: a minimum cost set of nodes to broadcast a message in social networks, such that each node has majority of neighbours broadcasting that message; a maximum trusted set in bitcoin network; an optimal set of hosts when running distributed apps etc. Extensive experiments on different generated and real networks highlight advantages and potential issues for each algorith…
Minimum flow decomposition (MFD) -- the problem of finding a minimum set of weighted source-to-sink paths that perfectly decomposes a flow -- is a classical problem in Computer Science, and variants of it are powerful models in different fields such as Bioinformatics and Transportation. Even on acyclic graphs, the problem is NP-hard, and most practical solutions have been via heuristics or approximations. While there is an extensive body of research on acyclic graphs, currently, there is no \emph{exact} solution on graphs with cycles. In this paper, we present the first ILP formulation for thr…
In Bayesian inference, the most probable explanation (MPE) problem requests a variable instantiation with the highest probability given some evidence. Since a Bayesian network can be encoded as a literal-weighted CNF formula $φ$, we study Boolean MPE, a more general problem that requests a model $τ$ of $φ$ with the highest weight, where the weight of $τ$ is the product of weights of literals satisfied by $τ$. It is known that Boolean MPE can be solved via reduction to (weighted partial) MaxSAT. Recent work proposed DPMC, a dynamic-programming model counter that leverages graph-decomposition te…
A classic result of Lenstra [Math.~Oper.~Res.~1983] says that an integer linear program can be solved in fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) time for the parameter being the number of variables. We extend this result by incorporating non-decreasing piecewise linear convex or concave functions to our (mixed) integer programs. This general technique allows us to establish parameterized complexity of a number of classic computational problems. In particular, we prove that Weighted Set Multicover is in FPT when parameterized by the number of elements to cover, and that there exists an FPT-time approxi…
In this paper we consider the classic scheduling problem of minimizing total weighted completion time on unrelated machines when jobs have release times, i.e, $R | r_{ij} | \sum_j w_j C_j$ using the three-field notation. For this problem, a 2-approximation is known based on a novel convex programming (J. ACM 2001 by Skutella). It has been a long standing open problem if one can improve upon this 2-approximation (Open Problem 8 in J. of Sched. 1999 by Schuurman and Woeginger). We answer this question in the affirmative by giving a 1.8786-approximation. We achieve this via a surprisingly simple …
We consider the problem of scheduling jobs on unrelated machines so as to minimize the sum of weighted completion times. Our main result is a $(3/2-c)$-approximation algorithm for some fixed $c>0$, improving upon the long-standing bound of 3/2 (independently due to Skutella, Journal of the ACM, 2001, and Sethuraman & Squillante, SODA, 1999). To do this, we first introduce a new lift-and-project based SDP relaxation for the problem. This is necessary as the previous convex programming relaxations have an integrality gap of $3/2$. Second, we give a new general bipartite-rounding procedure that p…
This paper discusses the graph covering problem in which a set of edges in an edge- and node-weighted graph is chosen to satisfy some covering constraints while minimizing the sum of the weights. In this problem, because of the large integrality gap of a natural linear programming (LP) relaxation, LP rounding algorithms based on the relaxation yield poor performance. Here we propose a stronger LP relaxation for the graph covering problem. The proposed relaxation is applied to designing primal-dual algorithms for two fundamental graph covering problems: the prize-collecting edge dominating set …
Finding large or heavy matchings in graphs is a ubiquitous combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper, we engineer the first non-trivial implementations for approximating the dynamic weighted matching problem. Our first algorithm is based on random walks/paths combined with dynamic programming. The second algorithm has been introduced by Stubbs and Williams without an implementation. Roughly speaking, their algorithm uses dynamic unweighted matching algorithms as a subroutine (within a multilevel approach); this allows us to use previous work on dynamic unweighted matching algorithms as…
In a graph $G = (V,E)$, a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. A dominating set $S$ of $G$ is called a paired-dominating set of $G$ if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we propose an $O(n+m)$-time algorithm for the weighted paired-domination problem on block graphs using dynamic programming, which strengthens the results in [Theoret. Comput. Sci., 410(47--49):5063--5071, 2009] and [J. Comb. Optim., 19(4):457--470, 2010]. Moreover, the algorithm can be completed in $…
We present a new combinatorial model for identifying regulatory modules in gene co-expression data using a decomposition into weighted cliques. To capture complex interaction effects, we generalize the previously-studied weighted edge clique partition problem. As a first step, we restrict ourselves to the noise-free setting, and show that the problem is fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by the number of modules (cliques). We present two new algorithms for finding these decompositions, using linear programming and integer partitioning to determine the clique weights. Further, we impl…
Kondo et al. (DS 2014) proposed methods for computing distances between unordered rooted trees by transforming an instance of the distance computing problem into an instance of the integer programming problem. They showed that the tree edit distance, segmental distance, and bottom-up segmental distance problem can be respectively transformed into an integer program which has $O(nm)$ variables and $O(n^2m^2)$ constraints, where $n$ and $m$ are the number of nodes of input trees. In this work, we propose new integer programming formulations for these three distances and the bottom-up distance by…
It is well known that many local graph problems, like Vertex Cover and Dominating Set, can be solved in 2^{O(tw)}|V|^{O(1)} time for graphs G=(V,E) with a given tree decomposition of width tw. However, for nonlocal problems, like the fundamental class of connectivity problems, for a long time we did not know how to do this faster than tw^{O(tw)}|V|^{O(1)}. Recently, Cygan et al. (FOCS 2011) presented Monte Carlo algorithms for a wide range of connectivity problems running in time $c^{tw}|V|^{O(1)} for a small constant c, e.g., for Hamiltonian Cycle and Steiner tree. Naturally, this raises the …
In this paper, we present a quantum algorithm for dynamic programming approach for problems on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). The running time of the algorithm is $O(\sqrt{\hat{n}m}\log \hat{n})$, and the running time of the best known deterministic algorithm is $O(n+m)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices, $\hat{n}$ is the number of vertices with at least one outgoing edge; $m$ is the number of edges. We show that we can solve problems that use OR, AND, NAND, MAX and MIN functions as the main transition steps. The approach is useful for a couple of problems. One of them is computing a Boole…

Belief Propagation (BP) is a popular, distributed heuristic for performing MAP computations in Graphical Models. BP can be interpreted, from a variational perspective, as minimizing the Bethe Free Energy (BFE). BP can also be used to solve a special class of Linear Programming (LP) problems. For this class of problems, MAP inference can be stated as an integer LP with an LP relaxation that coincides with minimization of the BFE at ``zero temperature". We generalize these prior results and establish a tight characterization of the LP problems that can be formulated as an equivalent LP relaxatio…
We consider the multiple traveling salesman problem on a weighted tree. In this problem there are $m$ salesmen located at the root initially. Each of them will visit a subset of vertices and return to the root. The goal is to assign a tour to every salesman such that every vertex is visited and the longest tour among all salesmen is minimized. The problem is equivalent to the subtree cover problem, in which we cover a tree with rooted subtrees such that the weight of the maximum weighted subtree is minimized. The classical machine scheduling problem can be viewed as a special case of our probl…
Both weighted and unweighted Borda manipulation problems have been proved $\mathcal{NP}$-hard. However, there is no exact combinatorial algorithm known for these problems. In this paper, we initiate the study of exact combinatorial algorithms for both weighted and unweighted Borda manipulation problems. More precisely, we propose $O^*((m\cdot 2^m)^{t+1})$time and $O^*(t^{2m})$time\footnote{$O^*()$ is the $O()$ notation with suppressed factors polynomial in the size of the input.} combinatorial algorithms for weighted and unweighted Borda manipulation problems, respectively, where $t$ is the nu…
We propose a Boolean Linear Programming model for the preemptive single machine scheduling problem with equal processing times, arbitrary release dates and weights(priorities) minimizing the total weighted completion time. Almost always an optimal solution of the Linear Programming relaxation is integral and can be straightforwardly converted into an optimal schedule. To deal with the fractional solutions we present two heuristics. Very often our heuristics find solutions with objective function values equal to the lower bound found by the Linear Programming relaxation. For the cases when uppe…
In this paper we address the problem of electing a committee among a set of $m$ candidates and on the basis of the preferences of a set of $n$ voters. We consider the approval voting method in which each voter can approve as many candidates as she/he likes by expressing a preference profile (boolean $m$-vector). In order to elect a committee, a voting rule must be established to `transform' the $n$ voters' profiles into a winning committee. The problem is widely studied in voting theory; for a variety of voting rules the problem was shown to be computationally difficult and approximation algor…
