Based on the daily data of American and Chinese stock markets, the dynamic behavior of a financial network with static and dynamic thresholds is investigated. Compared with the static threshold, the dynamic threshold suppresses the large fluctuation induced by the cross-correlation of individual stock prices, and leads to a stable topological structure in the dynamic evolution. Long-range time-correlations are revealed for the average clustering coefficient, average degree and cross-correlation of degrees. The dynamic network shows a two-peak behavior in the degree distribution.
Inference over tails is usually performed by fitting an appropriate limiting distribution over observations that exceed a fixed threshold. However, the choice of such threshold is critical and can affect the inferential results. Extreme value mixture models have been defined to estimate the threshold using the full dataset and to give accurate tail estimates. Such models assume that the tail behavior is constant for all observations. However, the extreme behavior of financial returns often changes considerably in time and such changes occur by sudden shocks of the market. Here we extend the ex…
Development of stock networks is an important approach to explore the relationship between different stocks in the era of big-data. Although a number of methods have been designed to construct the stock correlation networks, it is still a challenge to balance the selection of prominent correlations and connectivity of networks. To address this issue, we propose a new approach to select essential edges in stock networks and also maintain the connectivity of established networks. This approach uses different threshold values for choosing the edges connecting to a particular stock, rather than em…
Over the last two decades, financial systems have been studied and analysed from the perspective of complex networks, where the nodes and edges in the network represent the various financial components and the strengths of correlations between them. Here, we adopt a similar network-based approach to analyse the daily closing prices of 69 global financial market indices across 65 countries over a period of 2000-2014. We study the correlations among the indices by constructing threshold networks superimposed over minimum spanning trees at different time frames. We investigate the effect of criti…
Although the threshold network is one of the most used tools to characterize the underlying structure of a stock market, the identification of the optimal threshold to construct a reliable stock network remains challenging. In this paper, the concept of dynamic consistence between the threshold network and the stock market is proposed. The optimal threshold is estimated by maximizing the consistence function. The application of this procedure to stocks belonging to Standard \& Pool's 500 Index from January 2006 to December 2011 yields the threshold value 0.28. In analyzing topological characte…
This research shows that under certain mathematical conditions, a threshold autoregressive model (TAR) can represent the leverage effect based on its conditional variance function. Furthermore, the analytical expressions for the third and fourth moment of the TAR model are obtained when it is weakly stationary.

News events can greatly influence equity markets. In this paper, we are interested in predicting the short-term movement of stock prices after financial news events using only the headlines of the news. To achieve this goal, we introduce a new text mining method called Fine-Tuned Contextualized-Embedding Recurrent Neural Network (FT-CE-RNN). Compared with previous approaches which use static vector representations of the news (static embedding), our model uses contextualized vector representations of the headlines (contextualized embeddings) generated from Bidirectional Encoder Representations…
Being able to predict the occurrence of extreme returns is important in financial risk management. Using the distribution of recurrence intervals---the waiting time between consecutive extremes---we show that these extreme returns are predictable on the short term. Examining a range of different types of returns and thresholds we find that recurrence intervals follow a $q$-exponential distribution, which we then use to theoretically derive the hazard probability $W(Δt |t)$. Maximizing the usefulness of extreme forecasts to define an optimized hazard threshold, we indicates a financial extreme …
