The stability of two quantum counter-streaming electron beams is investigated within the quantum plasma fluid equations for arbitrarily oriented wave vectors. The analysis reveals that the two quantum two-stream unstable branches are indeed connected by a continuum of unstable modes with oblique wave vectors. Using the longitudinal approximation, the stability domain for any k is analytically explained, together with the growth rate.
We investigate the branching of positive streamers in air and present the first systematic investigation of splitting into more than two branches. We study discharges in 100 mbar artificial air that is exposed to voltage pulses of 10 kV applied to a needle electrode 160 mm above a grounded plate. By imaging the discharge with two cameras from three angles, we establish that about every 200th branching event is a branching into three. Branching into three occurs more frequently for the relatively thicker streamers. In fact, we find that the surface of the total streamer cross-sections before an…
In this paper we study the lateral instability of streamer discharges using a continuum discharge model. We observe similarities to Kelvin-Helmholz instability in fluids. In strong electric fields, lateral long wave length perturbations can grow while small wave length perturbations diminish during the discharge evolution. We perform numerical simulations and carry out asymptotic analysis of the instability. Our results could explain the growth observed in experimental discharges.
Plasma instabilities are the non-linear processes occurring in plasmas when excess energy gets accumulated in a plasma system which is unable to hold it. There are almost 60 known plasma instabilities in nature.
The unexpected features of the two-stream instability in electrostatic quantum plasmas are interpreted in terms of the coupling of approximate fast and slow waves. This is accomplished thanks to the factorization of the dispersion relation into different sectors carrying positive or negative energy. The concept of negative and positive energy waves, therefore, is useful not only for classical, but for quantum plasmas as well.
The transition between kinetic and hydrodynamic regimes of the one-dimensional two-stream instability is numerically analyzed, and the correction coefficients to the well-known textbook formulae are calculated. The approximate expressions are shown to overestimate the growth rate several times in a wide parameter area.
A new transverse mode in a two-stream magnetized quantum plasma is studied by means of a quantum hydrodynamic model, under non-relativistic and ideal Fermi gas assumptions. It is found that Fermi pressure effects induce a minimum cutoff wavelength for instability, unlike the classical case which is unstable for larger wavenumbers. The external magnetic field is also shown to produce a stabilizing effect. Conditions for the applicability of the model and specific parameters for experimental observations are thoroughly discussed.
A multi-stream instability is observed experimentally in a longitudinally expanding electron beam in a storage ring. The instability is observed when the beam expands such that its length is several times the circumference of the ring, and portions of the beam overlap. While portions of the beam overlap in physical space, due to the nature of the expansion process, the portions form multiple streams and remain separate in velocity space. The streams become unstable as their number increases and their separation in velocity decreases. An analytical theory predicts the onset of the instability, …
Filamentation due to the growth of a Weibel-type instability was observed in the interaction of a pair of counter-streaming, ablatively-driven plasma flows, in a supersonic, collisionless regime relevant to astrophysical collisionless shocks. The flows were created by irradiating a pair of opposing plastic (CH) foils with 1.8 kJ, 2-ns laser pulses on the OMEGA EP laser system. Ultrafast laser-driven proton radiography was used to image the Weibel-generated electromagnetic fields. The experimental observations are in good agreement with the analytical theory of the Weibel instability and with p…
Propagation of charged particle beams in background plasma as a method of space charge neutralization has been shown to achieve a high degree of charge and current neutralization and therefore enables nearly ballistic propagation and focusing of charged particle beams. Correspondingly, use of plasmas for propagation of charged particle beams has important applications for transport and focusing of intense particle beams in inertial fusion and high energy density laboratory plasma physics. However, the streaming of beam ions through a background plasma can lead to development of the two-stream …
The two-stream instability is probably the most important elementary example of collective instabilities in plasma physics and beam-plasma systems. For a warm plasma with two charged particle species based on a 1D warm-fluid model, the instability diagram of the two-stream instability exhibits an interesting band structure that has not been explained. We show that the band structure for this instability is the consequence of the Hamiltonian nature of the warm two-fluid system. Interestingly, the Hamiltonian nature manifests as a complex G-Hamiltonian structure in wave-number space, which direc…
The instability of a monoenergetic electron beam in a collisional one-dimensional plasma bounded between grounded walls is considered both analytically and numerically. Collisions between electrons and neutrals are accounted for the plasma electrons only. Solution of a dispersion equation shows that the temporal growth rate of the instability is a decreasing linear function of the collision frequency which becomes zero when the collision frequency is two times the collisionless growth rate. This result is confirmed by fluid simulations. Practical formulas are given for the estimate of the thre…
A relativistic electron beam propagating through plasma induces a return current in the system. Such a system of counterstreaming forward and return current is susceptible to host of instabilities out of which Weibel remains a dominant mode for destabilizing the system. Weibel instability has been widely investigated in simulations, experiments, as well as, analytically using fluid and kinetic treatments. A purely growing mode like Weibel instability can also be understood by using conservation theorems and energy principle analysis. An electrostatic analog to the Weibel instability, two strea…
In this work we investigate the possibility of two-stream instability in the Venusian atmosphere to lead to momentum transfer to subsequent escape of Hydrogen and Oxygen ions from the ionosphere. We employ the hydrodynamic model and obtain the linear dispersion relation from which the two-stream instability is studied. Further the interaction of solar wind with the ions of Venus ionosphere from which the instability sets in, has been studied with the data from ASPERA-4 of Venus Express (VEX). The data supports the fact that the two-stream instability can provide sufficient energy to accelerate…
The Weibel instability driven by two symmetric counter-streaming relativistic electron plasmas, also referred to as current-filamentation instability, is studied in a constant and uniform external magnetic field aligned with the plasma flows. Both the linear and non linear stages of the instability are investigated using analytical modeling and Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. While previous studies have already described the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field, we show here that the saturation stage is only weakly affected. The different mechanisms responsible for the saturation are d…

The nonlinear evolution of the quantum two-stream instability in a plasma with counter-streaming electron beams is studied. It is shown that in the long-wave limit the nonlinear stage of the instability can be described by the elliptic nonlinear string equation. We present two types of the nonlinear solutions. The first one is an unstable nonlinear mode that is continuously related with the growing linear solution and the second one is a pulsating soliton. We show that both of these solutions blow up in a finite time.
A new scheme of the THz light source is proposed. The excitation of the Langmuir wave in a moderately relativistic electron beam via the two-stream instability and the subsequent interaction of the excited Langmuir wave with the visible light laser results in THz ligh via the Raman scattering. The cost of the current scheme could be cheaper than the conventional technologies by using the electron beam from cathodes and low-intensity infra-red laser.
A non-resonant streaming instability driven by cosmic-ray currents, also called Bell's instability, is proposed as a candidate for providing the required magnetic turbulence of efficient diffusive shock accelerations. To demonstrate the saturation level and mechanism of the non-resonant streaming instability in a laboratory environment, we attempt to develop an experiment at the Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ). As an electron beam is used to replace the proton beam to carry the cosmic-ray current in our experiment, the polarization of the non-resonant streaming instab…
This paper presents a study of the two-stream instability of an electron beam propagating in a finite-size plasma placed between two electrodes. It is shown that the growth rate in such a system is much smaller than that of an infinite plasma or a finite size plasma with periodic boundary conditions. Even if the width of the plasma matches the resonance condition for a standing wave, a spatially growing wave is excited instead with the growth rate small compared to that of the standing wave in a periodic system. The approximate expression for this growth rate is $γ\approx (1/13)ω_{pe}(n_{b}/n_…
Using fully-kinetic plasma simulations, we study the non-resonant (Bell) streaming instability driven by energetic leptons. We identify the necessary conditions to drive it and the differences from the standard proton-driven case in both linear and saturated stages. A simple analytic theory is presented to explain simulations. Our findings are crucial for understanding the phenomenology of astrophysical environments where only electrons may be accelerated (e.g., oblique shocks) or where relativistic pairs are produced (e.g., around pulsar wind nebulae).
In plasmas where the thermal energy density exceeds the magnetic energy density ($β_\parallel > 1$), the aperiodic ordinary mode (O-mode) instability is driven by an excess of parallel temperature $A = T_\perp /T_\parallel < 1$ (where $\parallel$ and $\perp$ denote directions relative to the uniform magnetic field). When stimulated by parallel plasma streams the instability conditions extend to low beta states, i.e., $β_\parallel <1$, and recent studies have proven the existence of a new regime, where the anisotropy threshold decreases steeply with lowering $β_\parallel \to 0$ if the streaming…
It is well known that electron beams accelerated in solar flares can drive two-stream instability and produce radio bursts in the solar corona as well as in the interplanetary medium. Recent observations show that the solar wind likely originates from nanoflare-like events near the surface of the Sun where locally heated plasma escapes along open field lines into space. Recent numerical simulations and theoretical studies show that electron two-stream instability (ETSI) driven by nanoflare-accelerated electron beams can produce the observed nanoflare-type radio bursts, the non-Maxwellian elect…
The dispersion relation of kinetic Alfvén wave in inertial regime is studied in a three component non-degenerate streaming plasma. A lin- ear dispersion relation using fluid- Vlasov equation for quantum plasma is also derived. The quantum correction CQ raised due to the insertion of Bohm potential in Vlasov model causes the suppression in the Alfven wave frequency and the growth rates of instability. A number of analytical expressions are derived for various modes of propagation. It is also found that many system parameters, i.e, streaming velocity, dust charge, num- ber density and quantum co…
Magnetic field amplification by relativistic streaming plasma instabilities is central to a wide variety of high-energy astrophysical environments as well as to laboratory scenarios associated with intense lasers and electron beams. We report on a new secondary nonlinear instability which arises for relativistic dilute electron beams after the saturation of the linear Weibel instability. This instability grows due to the transverse magnetic pressure associated with the beam current filaments, which cannot be quickly neutralized due to the inertia of background ions. We show that it can amplify…
Using hybrid simulations (kinetic ions--fluid electrons), we test the linear theory predictions of the cosmic ray (CR) streaming instability. We consider two types of CR distribution functions: a "hot" distribution where CRs are represented by a drifting power law in momentum and an anisotropic "beam" of monochromatic particles. Additionally, for each CR distribution we scan over different CR densities to transition from triggering the resonant to the non-resonant (Bell) streaming instability. We determine the growth rates of these instabilities in simulations by fitting an exponential curve d…
A strong super-Alfvénic drift of energetic particles (or cosmic rays, CRs) in a magnetized plasma can amplify the magnetic field significantly through non-resonant streaming instability (NRSI). While the traditional analysis is done for an ion current, here we use kinetic particle-in-cell simulations to study how the NRSI behaves when it is driven by electrons or by a mixture of electrons and positrons. In particular, we characterize growth rate, spectrum, and helicity of the unstable modes, as well the level of magnetic field at saturation. Our results are potentially relevant for several spa…
Alfvénic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfvénic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We a…
Continuous plasma coherent emission is maintained by repetitive Langmuir collapse driven by the nonlinear evolution of a strong electron two-stream instability. The Langmuir waves are modulated by solitary waves in the linear stage, and by electrostatic whistler waves in the nonlinear stage. Modulational instability leads to Langmuir collapse and electron heating that fills in cavitons. The high pressure is released via excitation of a short wavelength ion acoustic mode that is damped by electrons and that re-excites small-scale Langmuir waves---this process closes a feedback loop that maintai…
We investigate the electron-hole two-stream instability (or Coulomb drag) in intrinsic bilayer graphene in the hydrodynamic regime, accounting for the effects of temperature, initial drift velocity, magnetic field, and collisions. The threshold drift speed for the onset of instabilities is of the order of the thermal velocity of the carriers. We put in evidence an unprecedented purely electrostatic mechanism leading to current relaxation, giving rise to a well-defined dc longitudinal conductivity $\propto T^{3/2}$. Due to competition between electrostatic and collisional processes, two distinc…
A Raman compression scheme suitable for x-rays, where the Langmuir wave is created by an intense beam rather than the pondermotive potential between the seed and pump pulses, is proposed. The required intensity of the seed and pump pulses enabling the compression could be mitigated by more than a factor of 100, compared to conventionally available other Raman compression schemes. The relevant wavelength of x-rays ranges from 1 to 10 nm.
We consider the quantum electrodynamic corrections to the two-stream instability. We find these corrections vanish at first order unless a guiding magnetic field $\mathbf{B}_0$ is considered. With respect to the classical version of the instability, quantum electrodynamic effects reduce the most unstable wave vector and its growth rate by a factor $\sqrt{1+ξ}$, with $ξ= \fracα{9π} (B_0/B_{cr})^2$, where $α$ is the fine-structure constant and $B_{cr}$ the Schwinger critical magnetic field. Although derived for a cold system, these results are valid for the kinetic case. The results are valid in…
Streaming cosmic rays can power the exponential growth of a seed magnetic field by exciting a non-resonant instability that feeds on their bulk kinetic energy. By generating the necessary turbulent magnetic field, it is thought to play a key role in the confinement and acceleration of cosmic rays at shocks. In this work we present hybrid-Particle-In-Cell simulations of the non-resonant mode including Monte Carlo collisions, and investigate the interplay between the pressure anisotropies produced by the instability and particle collisions in the background plasma. Simulations of poorly ionized …
A dynamic mitigation mechanism of the two-stream instability is discussed based on a phase control for plasma and fluid instabilities. The basic idea for the dynamic mitigation mechanism by the phase control was proposed in the paper [Phys. Plasmas 19, 024503(2012)]. The mitigation method is applied to the two-stream instability in this paper. In general, instabilities appear from the perturbations, and normally the perturbation phase is unknown. Therefore, the instability growth rate is discussed in fluids and plasmas. However, if the perturbation phase is known, the instability growth can be…
The nonlinear development of streaming instabilities in the current layers formed during magnetic reconnection with a guide field is explored. Theory and 3-D particle-in-cell simulations reveal two distinct phases. First, the parallel Buneman instability grows and traps low velocity electrons. The remaining electrons then drive two forms of turbulence: the parallel electron-electron two-stream instability and the nearly-perpendicular lower hybrid instability. The high velocity electrons resonate with the turbulence and transfer momentum to the ions and low velocity electrons.
A new scheme of hard x-ray or gamma ray light is considered. The excitation of the Langmuir wave in an ultra dense electron beamm via the two-stream instabilities and the interaction of the excited Langmuir wave with the visible light-laser results in hard x-ray or gamma ray via three-wave interaction. The analysis suggests that the hard x-ray with the wave-lenght as small as 0.03 nm can be achieved. The plausible parameter for the practical use is proposed and the comparison with the conventional methods are provided.
We study the streaming instability of GeV$-100~$GeV cosmic rays (CRs) and its damping in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the damping of streaming instability is dominated by ion-neutral collisional damping in weakly ionized molecular clouds, turbulent damping in the highly ionized warm medium, and nonlinear Landau damping in the Galactic halo. Only in the Galactic halo, is the streaming speed of CRs close to the Alfvén speed. Alfvénic turbulence plays an important role in both suppressing the streaming instability and regulating the diffusion of streaming CRs via magnetic…
Firehose-like instabilities (FIs) are cited in multiple astrophysical applications. Of particular interest are the kinetic manifestations in weakly-collisional or even collisionless plasmas, where these instabilities are expected to contribute to the evolution of macroscopic parameters. Relatively recent studies have initiated a realistic description of FIs, as induced by the interplay of both species, electrons and protons, dominant in the solar wind plasma. This work complements the current knowledge with new insights from linear theory and the first disclosures from 2D PIC simulations, iden…
In a recent work [Bret, EPL \textbf{135} (2021) 35001], quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects were evaluated for the two-stream instability. It pertains to the growth of perturbations with a wave vector oriented along the flow in a collisionless counter-streaming system. Here, the analysis is extended to every possible orientation of the wave vector. The previous result for the two-stream instability is recovered, and it is proved that even within the framework of a 3D analysis, this instability remains fundamentally 1D even when accounting for QED effects. The filamentation instability, found …
We theoretically and numerically investigate the ion-acoustic features of collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream plasmas. When the electron distribution functions of two (stationary and moving) components overlap with each other at the phase velocities corresponding to the two resonant peaks of the ion-acoustic feature, the theoretical spectrum shows asymmetry because the rate of electron Landau damping is different for the two peaks. The results of numerical simulations agree well with the theoretical spectra. We also demonstrate the effect of a two-stream-type instability in the i…
We explore the physics of the gyro-resonant cosmic ray streaming instability (CRSI) including the effects of ion-neutral (IN) damping. This is the main damping mechanism in (partially-ionized) atomic and molecular gas, which are the primary components of the interstellar medium (ISM) by mass. Limitation of CRSI by IN damping is important in setting the amplitude of Alfvén waves that scatter cosmic rays and control galactic-scale transport. Our study employs the MHD-PIC hybrid fluid-kinetic numerical technique to follow linear growth as well as post-linear and saturation phases. During the line…
Two coupled, interpenetrating fluids suffer instabilities beyond certain critical counterflows. For ideal fluids, an energetic instability occurs at the point where a sound mode inverts its direction due to the counterflow, while dynamical instabilities only occur at larger relative velocities. Here we discuss two relativistic fluids, one of which is dissipative. Using linearized hydrodynamics, we show that in this case the energetic instability turns dynamical, i.e., there is an exponentially growing mode, and this exponential growth only occurs in the presence of dissipation. This result is …
We show that grains streaming through a fluid are generically unstable if their velocity, projected along some direction, matches the phase velocity of a fluid wave (linear oscillation). This can occur whenever grains stream faster than any fluid wave. The wave itself can be quite general--sound waves, magnetosonic waves, epicyclic oscillations, and Brunt-Väisälä oscillations each generate instabilities, for example. We derive a simple expression for the growth rates of these "resonant drag instabilities" (RDI). This expression (i) illustrates why such instabilities are so virulent and generic…
