We present here the preliminary results of the study of the fluorescent iron line emission from X-ray pulsars with Be companions. We propose to use properties of this emission to investigate the spatial distribution and physical conditions of the matter around the compact object as well as in the binary system as a whole. Using data of the RXTE observatory the iron line behavior in the transient X-ray pulsar V 0332+53 spectrum was studied during the powerful type II outburst in 2004-2005. Particularly, we investigated a variability of the iron line equivalent width on different time scales (pulse period, orbital period, outburst phase) and searched for its correlation with the continuum flux, spectral parameters, etc.
We present results of phase- and time-resolved study of iron spectral features in the emission of the Be/X-ray transient pulsar V0332+53, during its type II outburst in 2004 using archival RXTE/PCA data. Coherent pulsations of both fluorescent iron line at {\approx}6.4 keV and neutral iron K-edge at {\approx}7.1 keV have been detected throughout the entire outburst. The pulsating iron K-edge is reported for the first time for this object. Near the peak of the outburst, the 3-12 keV pulse profile shows two deep, F_max / F_min ~ 2, and narrow dips of nearly identical shape, separated by exactly …
We report the first discovery of pulse phase modulating optical depths at the iron K-edge in accretion-powered X-ray pulsars, from Suzaku observations. A significant modulating optical depth of the iron K-edge is detected for Vela X-1 and GX 1+4. Similar trends are seen in GX 301-2 and OAO 1657-415, though with poor statistical significance. The observed iron K-edge exhibits a maximum optical depth, when the X-ray continuum dims, and there is no significant pulse phase variation in the ionization state of iron. The revealed changes in the optical depth with pulse phase can be explained as bein…
We present the results obtained from timing and spectral studies of high mass X-ray binary pulsar OAO 1657-415 using a Suzaku observations in 2011 September. X-ray pulsations were detected in the light curves up to $\sim$70 keV. The continuum spectra during the high- and low-flux regions in light curves were well described by high energy cutoff power-law model along with a blackbody component and iron fluorescent lines at 6.4 keV and 7.06 keV. Time resolved spectroscopy was carried out by dividing the entire observations into 18 narrow segments. Presence of additional dense matter at various o…
We present results obtained from a Suzaku observation of the accretion powered X-ray pulsar GX 1+4. Broad-band continuum spectrum of the pulsar was found to be better described by a simple model consisting of a blackbody component and an exponential cutoff power-law than the previously used compTT continuum model. Though the pulse profile had a sharp dip in soft X-rays ($<$10 keV), phase-resolved spectroscopy confirmed that the dimming was not due to increase in photoelectric absorption. Phase-sliced spectral analysis showed the presence of a significant spectral modulation beyond 10 keV excep…
We present results of the spectral and timing analysis of the X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 with the NuSTAR observatory in the broad energy range 3-79 keV. Along with the detailed analysis of the averaged source spectrum, the high-precision pulse phased-resolved spectra were obtained for the first time. It has been shown that the comptonization model gives the best approximation of the obtained spectra. The evolution of its parameters was traced depending on the pulse phase as well. The search for the possible cyclotron absorption line was performed for all energy spectra in the 5-55 keV energy range. …
The double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039A/B is a double neutron star binary, with a 2.4-hour orbital period, which has allowed measurement of relativistic orbital perturbations to high precision. The low mass of the second-formed neutron star, as well as the low system eccentricity and proper motion, point to a different evolutionary scenario compared to most other known double neutron star systems. We describe analysis of the pulse profile shape over 6 years of observations, and present the resulting constraints on the system geometry. We find the recycled pulsar in this system, PSR J0737-3039…
This paper provides analyses of the emission beam structure of 76 ``B''-named pulsars within the Arecibo sky. Most of these objects are included in both the Gould & Lyne and LOFAR High Band surveys and thus complement our other works treating various parts of these populations. These comprise a further group of mostly well studied pulsars within the Arecibo sky that we here treat similarly to those in Olszanski et.al. and extend our overall efforts to study all of the pulsars in both surveys. The analyses are based on observations made with the Arecibo Telescope at 327 MHz and 1.4 GHz. Many ha…
We demonstrate a method for quantitatively comparing gamma-ray pulsar light curves with magnetosphere beaming models. With the Fermi LAT providing many pulsar discoveries and high quality pulsar light curves for the brighter objects, such comparison allows greatly improved constraints on the emission zone geometry and the magnetospheric physics. Here we apply the method to Fermi LAT light curves of a set of bright pulsars known since EGRET or before. We test three approximate models for the magnetosphere structure and two popular schemes for the location of the emission zone, the Two Pole Caus…
We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The ot…
Recent studies have shown that gamma-ray pulsar light curves are very sensitive to the geometry of the pulsar magnetic field. Pulsar magnetic field geometries, such as the retarded vacuum dipole and force-free magnetospheres have distorted polar caps that are offset from the magnetic axis in the direction opposite to rotation. Since this effect is due to the sweepback of field lines near the light cylinder, offset polar caps are a generic property of pulsar magnetospheres and their effects should be included in gamma-ray pulsar light curve modeling. In slot gap models (having two-pole caustic …
We present a timing and spectral analysis of the X-ray pulsar XTE J1946+274 observed with Suzaku during an outburst decline in 2010 October and compare with previous results. XTE J1946+274 is a transient X-ray binary consisting of a Be-type star and a neutron star with a 15.75 s pulse period in a 172 d orbit with 2-3 outbursts per orbit during phases of activity. We improve the orbital solution using data from multiple instruments. The X-ray spectrum can be described by an absorbed Fermi-Dirac cutoff power law model along with a narrow Fe K line at 6.4 keV and a weak Cyclotron Resonance Scatte…
We applied a decomposition method to the energy dependent pulse profiles of the accreting binary pulsar A 0535+26, in order to identify the contribution of the two magnetic poles of the neutron star and to obtain constraints on the geometry of the system and on the beam pattern. We analyzed pulse profiles obtained from RXTE observations in the X-ray regime. Basic assumptions of the method are that the asymmetry observed in the pulse profiles is caused by non-antipodal magnetic poles and that the emission regions have axisymmetric beam patterns. Constraints on the geometry of the pulsar and a p…
We present radio pulsar emission beam analyses and models with the primary intent of examining pulsar beam geometry and physics over the broadest band of radio frequencies reasonably obtainable. We consider a set of well-studied pulsars that lie within the Arecibo sky. These pulsars stand out for the broad frequency range over which emission is detectable, and have been extensively observed at frequencies up to 4.5 GHz and down to below 100 MHz. We utilize published profiles to quantify a more complete picture of the frequency evolution of these pulsars using the core/double-cone emission beam…
The Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi spacecraft has detected more than 200 $γ$-ray pulsars since its launch in 2008. By concurrently fitting standard geometric model light curves onto Fermi and radio data, researchers have constrained the inclination and observer angles of a number of pulsars. At first this was done by comparing observed and modelled light curves by eye, and later via statistical approaches. We fit modelled light curves of 16 pulsars to radio and $γ$-ray data by optimising a custom test statistic that we have developed for combining light curves across the two wavebands, …
If cooled-down neutron stars have a thin atomic crystalline-iron crust, they must diffract X-rays of appropriate wavelength. If the diffracted beam is to be visible from Earth, the illuminating source must be very intense and near the reflecting star. An example is a binary system composed of two neutron stars in close orbit, one of them inert, the other an X-ray pulsar (perhaps an "anomalous" X-ray pulsar or magnetar, not powered by gas absorption from the companion or surrounding space, would be the cleanest example). The observable to be searched for is a secondary peak added (quasi-) perio…
We report on an X-ray observation of the Be X-ray Binary Pulsar RX J0059.2-7138, performed by XMM-Newton in March 2014. The 19 ks long observation was carried out about three months after the discovery of the latest outburst from this Small Magellanic Cloud transient, when the source luminosity was Lx ~ 10$^{38}$ erg/s. A spin period of P=2.762383(5) s was derived, corresponding to an average spin-up of $\dot{P}_{\mathrm{spin}} = -(1.27\pm0.01)\times10^{-12}$ s $s^{-1}$ from the only previous period measurement, obtained more than 20 years earlier. The time-averaged continuum spectrum (0.2-12 …
We present pulsar emission beam analyses and models in an effort to examine pulsar geometry and physics at the lowest frequencies scattering permits. We consider two populations of well-studied pulsars that lie outside the Arecibo sky, the first drawing on the Jodrell Bank Gould & Lyne survey down to -35° declination and a second using Parkes surveys in the far south. These assemble the full sky population of 487 pulsars known before the late 1990s which conveniently all have "B" names. We make full use of the core/double-cone emission beam model to assess its efficacy at lower frequencies, an…
We present the results of our study of X-ray pulsar Cen X-3 using XMM-Newton observations. The light curve and the spectrum for this observations were built and Fe triplet within 6.5-7 keV region was detected. The geometric model of relativistic accretion disk for iron emission lines Fe I K alpha, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in 6.4-7.0 keV region was applied. The values of disc inclination, inner and outer radii of the disc and mass of the central compact object (neutron star) were obtained. Intensity variations of these lines during orbital motion were also detected. The largest variation was detected…
There is a growing new class of young spin-down powered pulsars called GeV-quiet soft gamma-ray pulsar; (1) spectral turnover appears around~10MeV, (2) the X-ray spectra of below 20 keV can be described by power law with photon index around 1.2 and (3) the light curve in X-ray/soft gamma-ray bands shows single broad pulse. Their emission properties are distinct from the normal gamma-ray pulsars, for which the spectral peak in $νF_ν$ appears in GeV energy bands and the X-ray/gamma-ray light curves show sharp and double (or more) peaks. In this paper, we discuss that X-ray/soft gamma-ray emissio…
We have performed a Monte-Calro simulation for Galactic population of pulsars and for the $γ$-ray observations. We apply outer gap model for the $γ$-ray emission process, and study the radiation characteristics as a function of the magnetic inclination angle $(α)$ and the Earth viewing angle ($ζ$). In our model, the $γ$-ray flux and the spectral cut-off energy tend to decrease as the inclination and viewing angles deviate from $90^{\circ}$. The emerging spectrum above 100 MeV becomes soft with a photon index $p\sim 1.8-2$ for $ζ\rightarrow 90^{\circ}$ and $p\sim 1.2-1.3$ for $ζ\ll 90^{\circ}$.…
We present a spectral study of the ultraluminous Be/X-ray transient pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations during the system's 2017--2018 giant outburst. The 1.2--10~keV energy spectrum of the source can be approximated with an absorbed cut-off power law model. We detect strong, luminosity-dependent emission lines in the 6--7 keV energy range. A narrow 6.42 keV line, observed in the sub-Eddington regime, is seen to evolve into a broad Fe-line profile in the super-Eddington regime. Other features are found at 6.67 and 6.97 keV in the Fe-l…
In this work, we introduce the use of the differential geometry Frenet-Serret equations to describe a magnetic line in a pulsar magnetosphere. These equations, which need to be solved numerically, fix the magnetic line in terms of their tangent, normal, and binormal vectors at each position, given assumptions on the radius of curvature and torsion. Once the representation of the magnetic line is defined, we provide the relevant set of transformations between reference frames; the ultimate aim is to express the map of the emission directions in the star co-rotating frame. In this frame, an emis…
Taxonomy of radio pulsar profiles is mostly based on a system of Ptolemaic artificiality, consisting of separated rings and a core, arbitrarily located at disparate altitudes in the magnetosphere. Diversity of observed profile shapes clearly exceeds the interpretive capability of such conal model. Moreover, bifurcated features observed in pulsar profiles imply a system of fan beams radially extending away from the dipole axis. The bifurcations can be understood as the imprint of the elementary radiation pattern of the long-sought radio emission mechanism, thus identifying the latter. Their siz…
Aims: PSR J0855-4644 is a fast-spinning, energetic pulsar discovered at radio wavelengths near the south-eastern rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622. A follow-up observation revealed the pulsar's X-ray counterpart and a slightly asymmetric PWN suggesting possible jet structures. PSR J0855-4644 is a pulsar with one of the highest \dot{E}/d^{2} from which no GeV γ-ray pulsations have been detected. Methods: With a dedicated Chandra observation, we perform detailed spatial modelling to constrain the geometry of the PWN, in particular the pulsar's line of sight ζ_{\rm PSR}. We also perfor…
Since the launch of the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, several hundred gamma-ray pulsars have been discovered, some being radio-loud and some radio-quiet with time-aligned radio and gamma-ray light curves. In the second Fermi Pulsar Catalogue, 117 new gamma-ray pulsars have been reported based on three years of data collected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi satellite, providing a wealth of information such as the peak separation~$Δ$ of the gamma-ray pulsations and the radio lag~$δ$ between the gamma-ray and radio pulses. We selected several radio-loud millisecond gamma-ray pulsars w…
We present the results obtained from a study of the variability of iron emission lines in the high mass X-ray binary pulsar Cen X-3 during the eclipse, eclipse-egress and out-of-eclipse phases using XMM-Newton observations. Three iron emission lines at 6.4 keV, 6.7 keV, and 6.97 keV are clearly detected in the spectrum of the pulsar during the entire observations, irrespective of different binary phases. The properties of these emission lines are investigated at different intensity levels. The flux level and equivalent width of the emission lines change during the eclipse, eclipse-egress and o…
The high-quality Fermi LAT observations of gamma-ray pulsars have opened a new window to understanding the generation mechanisms of high-energy emission from these systems. The high statistics allow for careful modeling of the light curve features as well as for phase resolved spectral modeling. We modeled the LAT light curves of the Vela and CTA 1 pulsars with simulated high-energy light curves generated from geometrical representations of the outer gap and slot gap emission models, within the vacuum retarded dipole and force-free fields. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo maximum likelihood method w…
The extremely high brightness temperatures of pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs) require their radiation mechanisms to be coherent. Coherent curvature radiation by bunches has been long discussed as the mechanism for radio pulsars and recently for FRBs. Assuming that bunches are already generated in pulsar magnetospheres, we calculate the spectrum of coherent curvature radiation under a three-dimensional magnetic field geometry. Different from previous works assuming parallel trajectories and a mono-energetic energy distribution of electrons, we consider a bunch characterized by its length, …
For many years it has been considered puzzling how pulsar radio emission, supposedly created by a circulating carousel of sub-beams, can produce the driftbands demonstrated by PSR J0815+09, and more recently PSR B1839-04, which simultaneously drift in opposing directions. Here we suggest that the carousels of these pulsars, and hence their beams, are not circular but elliptical with axes tilted with respect to the fiducial plane. We show that certain relatively unusual lines of sight can cause bi-drifting to be observed, and a simulation of the two known exemplars is presented. Although bi-dri…
The light curves and spectral properties of more than 200 $γ$-ray pulsars have been measured in unsurpassed detail in the eight years since the launch of the hugely successful Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) $γ$-ray mission. We performed geometric pulsar light curve modelling using static, retarded vacuum, and offset polar cap (PC) dipole $B$-fields (the latter is characterized by a parameter $ε$), in conjunction with standard two-pole caustic (TPC) and outer gap (OG) emission geometries. In addition to constant-emissivity geometric models, we also considered a slot gap (SG) $E$-field associa…
Chandra images of the Crab Nebula resolve the detailed structure of its "inner ring", possibly a termination shock where pulsar-accelerated relativistic particles begin to emit X radiation. Analysis of these images finds that the center of the ellipse-presumably a circular ring in projection-lies about 0.9" (10 light-days at 2 kpc) from the pulsar's image, at a position angle of about 300° (East of North). This analysis also measures properties of the ellipse: The position angle of the semi-major axis is about 210° (East of North); the aspect ratio, 0.49. In a simple-albeit, not unique-de-proj…
The nine millisecond pulsars (MSPs) that have now been detected by Fermi-LAT are providing an excellent opportunity to probe the emission geometry of these ancient compact objects. As they are radio-loud, one may use the relative phase lags across wavebands to obtain constraints on the orientation, size, and location of their radio and gamma-ray beams. We model the gamma-ray light curves using geometric outer gap (OG) and two-pole caustic (TPC) models, in addition to a pair-starved polar cap (PSPC) model which incorporates the full General Relativistic E-field. We find that most MSP light curv…
We have developed a model for pulsar polarization by taking into account of viewing geometry, rotation and modulation of the emission region. By solving for the plasma dynamics, we deduced the expressions for curvature radiation electric field in time as well as frequency domains. We show that both the 'antisymmetric' and 'symmetric' types of circular polarization are possible due to the combined effect of aberration, viewing geometry and modulation. We argue that aberration combined with modulation can introduce 'kinky' pattern into the PPA traverses.
We present a long-term spectral monitoring of the unique Double Pulsar binary PSR J0737-3039 corresponding to two "Large Programs" performed by XMM-Newton in 2006 and 2011. Spectral variability of pulsar emission in soft X-rays is not evident over 5 years, despite the significant relativistic spin precession in the considered time span (about 25deg). We provide, for the first time, evidence of hard X-ray emission from the system in the 5-8 keV energy band. The standard spectral analysis was coupled to the energy dependent spatial analysis to confirm this excess, most likely ascribed to iron li…
The X-ray line diagnostic method is a powerful tool for an investigation of plasma around accretion-powered X-ray pulsars. We point out an apparent intensity modulation of emission lines with their rotation period of neutron stars, due to the finite speed of light (we call this effect "finite light speed effect"), if the line emission mechanism is a kind of reprocessing, such as fluorescence or recombination after ionization by X-ray irradiation from pulsars. The modulation amplitude is determined by the size of the emission region, in competition with the smearing effect by the light crossing…
Context: Theoretical modelling of time-lags between variations in the Fe K$α$ emission and the X-ray continuum might shed light on the physics and geometry of the X-ray emitting region in active galaxies (AGN) and X-ray binaries. We here present the results from a systematic analysis of time-lags between variations in two energy bands ($5-7$ vs $2-4\,\mathrm{keV}$) for seven X-ray bright and variable AGN. Aims: We estimate time-lags as accurately as possible and fit them with theoretical models in the context of the lamp-post geometry. We also constrain the geometry of the X-ray emitting regio…

In order to examine the pulse profile from a pulsar, we derive the formula for describing the flux from antipodal hot spots with any static, spherically symmetric spacetime. We find that the pulse profiles are almost independent of the gravitational geometry outside the star when the compactness of neutron stars is low enough, e.g., the stellar mass and radius are $1.4M_\odot$ and 14 km, respectively. On the other hand, the pulse profiles depend strongly on the gravitational geometry when the compactness of neutron stars is so high, e.g., the stellar mass and radius are $1.8M_\odot$ and 10 km,…
An interesting new high-energy pulsar sub-population is emerging following early discoveries of gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). We present results from 3D emission modeling, including the Special Relativistic effects of aberration and time-of-flight delays and also rotational sweepback of B-field lines, in the geometric context of polar cap (PC), outer gap (OG), and two-pole caustic (TPC) pulsar models. In contrast to the general belief that these very old, rapidly-rotating neutron stars (NSs) should have largely pair-starved magnetospheres due to …
We compare radio profile widths of young, energetic gamma-ray-detected and non-gamma-ray-detected pulsars. We find that the latter typically have wider radio profiles, with the boundary between the two samples exhibiting a dependence on the rate of rotational energy loss. We also find that within the sample of gamma-ray-detected pulsars, radio profile width is correlated with both the separation of the main gamma-ray peaks and the presence of narrow gamma-ray components. These findings lead us to propose that these pulsars form a single population where the main factors determining gamma ray d…
Observations suggest that coherent radio emission from pulsars is excited in a dense pulsar plasma by curvature radiation from charge bunches. Numerous studies propose that these charge bunches are relativistic charge solitons which are solutions of the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with a group velocity dispersion ($G$), cubic-nonlinearity($q$) and non-linear Landau damping ($s$). The formation of stable solitons crucially depends on the parameters $G, q$ and $s$ and the particle distribution function. In this work, we use realistic pulsar plasma parameters obtained from observationa…
The pulse profiles of the transient Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 show strong dependence on energy, as well as on its luminosity state, and are asymmetric in shape. We want to identify the emission components of the two magnetic poles in the pulsed emission to understand the geometry of the neutron star and its beam pattern. We utilize a pulse-profile decomposition method that enables us to find two symmetric pulse profiles from the magnetic poles of the neutron star. The symmetry characteristics of these single-pole pulse profiles give information about the position of the magnetic poles of th…
Observing simultaneously pulsed radio and gamma-ray emission from these stars helps to constrain the geometry and radiation mechanisms within their magnetosphere and to localize the multiple photon production sites. In this paper, we fit the time-aligned gamma-ray light-curves of young radio-loud gamma-ray pulsars. We assume a dipole force-free magnetosphere where radio photons emanate from high altitude above the polar caps and gamma-rays originate from outside the light-cylinder, within the striped wind current sheet. We compute a full atlas of radio and gamma-ray pulse profiles depending on…
We have analyzed archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the gamma-ray radio-quiet pulsar J1826-1256 and its pulsar wind nebula. The pulsar spectrum can be described by a power-law model with a photon index $Γ\approx1$. We find that the nebular spectrum softens with increasing distance from the pulsar, implying synchrotron cooling. The empirical interstellar absorption-distance relation gives a distance of $\approx3.5$ kpc to J1826-1256. We also discuss the nebula geometry and association between the pulsar, the very high energy source HESS J1826-130, the supernova remnant candidate G1…
We report on pulse profile decomposition analysis of a bright transient X-ray pulsar 1A 0535+262 using the broadband Insight-HXMT observations during a giant outburst of the source in 2020. We show that the observed pulse profile shape can be described in terms of a combination of two symmetric single-pole contributions for wide range of energies and luminosities for a fixed geometry defining basic geometry of the pulsar. This corresponds to a slightly distorted dipole magnetic field, i.e., one pole has to be offset by $\sim 12^{\circ}$ from the antipodal position of the other pole. We reconst…
The second pulsar catalogue of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) will contain in excess of 100 gamma-ray pulsars. The light curves (LCs) of these pulsars exhibit a variety of shapes, and also different relative phase lags with respect to their radio pulses, hinting at distinct underlying emission properties (e.g., inclination and observer angles) for the individual pulsars. Detailed geometric modelling of the radio and gamma-ray LCs may provide constraints on the B-field structure and emission geometry. We used different B-field solutions, including the static vacuum dipole and the retarded…
We have developed a relativistic model for pulsar radio emission and polarization by taking into account of detailed geometry of emission region, rotation and modulation. The sparks activity on the polar cap leads to plasma columns in the emission region and modulated emission. By considering relativistic plasma bunches streaming out along the rotating dipolar field lines as source of curvature radiation, deduced the polarization state of the radiation field in terms of the Stokes parameters. We have simulated a set of typical pulse profiles, and analyzed the role of viewing geometry, rotation…
We present a high resolution X-ray spectrum of the accreting X-ray pulsar, OAO 1657--415 with HETG+ACIS-S onboard \emph{Chandra},revealing the presence of a broad line component around $\sim$ 6.3 keV associated with the neutral iron K$_α$ line at 6.4 \rm{keV}. This is interpreted as Compton shoulder arising from the Compton scattering of the 6.4 \rm{keV} fluorescence photons making OAO 1657--415 the second accreting neutron star where such a feature is detected. A Compton shoulder reveals the presence of dense matter surrounding the X-ray source. We did not detect any periodicity in the lightc…
Spin evolution of X-ray pulsars in High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) is discussed under various assumptions about the geometry and physical parameters of the accretion flow. The torque applied to the neutron star from the accretion flow and equilibrium period of the pulsars are evaluated. We show that the observed spin evolution of the pulsars can be explained in terms of a scenario in which the neutron star accretes material from a magnetized stellar wind.
