Observation of Zeeman shift in the rubidium D2 line using an optical nanofiber in vapor

We report on the observation of a Zeeman shift (order of 100 MHz) of the Doppler-broadened D2 transition of both 85Rb and 87Rb isotopes via transmission through a tapered optical nanofiber in the presence of a DC magnetic field. Linearly-polarized light propagating in the nanofiber is analyzed as a superposition of two orthogonally circularly-polarized orientations, σ+ and σ-. In the absence of the magnetic field, the absorption of these polarizations by the atomic vapor, via the evanescent field at the waist of the nanofiber, is degenerate. Measuring the Stokes parameters for light transmitted by a high-density rubidium vapour in large magnetic fields

Here we report on measurements of the absolute absorption and dispersion of light in a dense rubidium vapour on the D2 line in the weak-probe regime with an applied magnetic field. A model for the electric susceptibility of the vapour is presented which includes both dipole-dipole interactions and the Zeeman effect. The predicted susceptibility is comprehensively tested by comparison to experimental spectra for fields up to 800 G. Production of long-lived atomic vapor inside high-density buffer gas

Atomic vapor of four different paramagnetic species: gold, silver, lithium, and rubidium, is produced and studied inside several buffer gases: helium, nitrogen, neon, and argon. The paramagnetic atoms are injected into the buffer gas using laser ablation. Wires with diameters 25 $μ$m, 50 $μ$m, and 100 $μ$m are used as ablation targets for gold and silver, bulk targets are used for lithium and rubidium. A High Flux Source of Cold Rubidium

We report the production of a continuous, slow, and cold beam of 87-Rb atoms with an unprecedented flux of 3.2 x 10^12 atoms/s and a temperature of a few milliKelvin. Hot atoms are emitted from a Rb candlestick atomic beam source and transversely cooled and collimated by a 20 cm long atomic collimator section, augmenting overall beam flux by a factor of 50. The atomic beam is then decelerated and longitudinally cooled by Zeeman slowing.
