We show how a single, harmonically trapped atom in a tailored magnetic field can be used for simulating the effects of a broad class of non-abelian gauge potentials. We demonstrate how to implement Rashba or Linear-Dresselhaus couplings, or observe {\em Zitterbewegung} of a Dirac particle.
To explore the possibilities of a near-term intermediate-scale quantum algorithm and long-term fault-tolerant quantum computing, a fast and versatile quantum circuit simulator is needed. Here, we introduce Qulacs, a fast simulator for quantum circuits intended for research purpose. We show the main concepts of Qulacs, explain how to use its features via examples, describe numerical techniques to speed-up simulation, and demonstrate its performance with numerical benchmarks.
The transversely confined propagating light modes of a nano-photonic optical waveguide or nanofiber can mediate effectively infinite-range forces. We show that for a linear chain of particles trapped within the waveguide's evanescent field, transverse illumination with a suitable set of laser frequencies should allow the implementation of a coupled-oscillator quantum simulator with time-dependent and widely controllable all-to-all interactions. At the example of the energy spectrum of oscillators with simulated Coulomb interactions we show that different effective coupling geometries can be em…
Using trapped atomic ions we demonstrate a tailored and versatile effective spin-system suitable for quantum simulations and universal quantum computation. By simply applying microwave pulses, selected spins can be decoupled from the remaining system and thus can serve as a quantum memory, while simultaneously, other coupled spins perform conditional quantum dynamics. Also, microwave pulses can change the sign of spin-spin couplings, as well as their effective strength, even during the course of a quantum algorithm. Taking advantage of the simultaneous long-range coupling between three spins a…
Supersymmetry (SUSY) helps solve the hierarchy problem in high-energy physics and provides a natural groundwork for unifying gravity with other fundamental interactions. While being one of the most promising frameworks for theories beyond the Standard Model, its direct experimental evidence in nature still remains to be discovered. Here we report experimental realization of a supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) model, a reduction of the SUSY quantum field theory for studying its fundamental properties, using a trapped ion quantum simulator. We demonstrate the energy degeneracy caused by…
Trapped ions are a versatile platform for the investigation of quantum many-body phenomena, in particular for the study of scenarios where long-range interactions are mediated by phonons. Recent experiments have shown that the trapped ion platform can be augmented by exciting high-lying Rydberg states. This introduces controllable state-dependent interactions that are independent from the phonon structure. However, the many-body physics in this newly accessible regime is largely unexplored. We show that this system grants access to generalized Dicke model physics, where dipolar interactions be…
Atomtronics is an emerging field in quantum technology that promises to realize 'atomic circuit' architectures exploiting ultra-cold atoms manipulated in versatile micro-optical circuits generated by laser fields of different shapes and intensities or micro-magnetic circuits known as atom chips. Although devising new applications for computation and information transfer is a defining goal of the field, Atomtronics wants to enlarge the scope of quantum simulators and to access new physical regimes with novel fundamental science. With this focus issue we want to survey the state of the art of At…
Laser cooled and quantum degenerate atoms are widely being pursued as quantum simulators that may explain the behavior of strongly correlated material systems, and as the basis of today's most precise sensors. A key challenge towards these goals is to understand and control coherent interactions between the atoms. Here, we observe long-range exchange interactions mediated by an optical cavity, which manifest as tunable spin-spin interactions on the pseudo spin-1/2 system composed of the millihertz linewidth clock transition in strontium. We observe the so-called one axis twisting dynamics, the…
We show that ultra-cold atoms with synthetic spin-orbit coupling in Raman lattices can be used as versatile quantum simulators to explore the connections between correlated Chern insulators and strongly-coupled four-Fermi field theories related to the Gross-Neveu model in (2+1) dimensions. Exploiting this multidisciplinary perspective, we identify a large-$N$ quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in absence of any external magnetic field, and use it to delimit regions in parameter space where these correlated topological phases appear, the boundaries of which are controlled by strongly-coupled f…
