We investigate pattern speeds in spiral galaxies where the structure is induced by an interaction with a companion galaxy. We perform calculations modeling the response of the stellar and/or gaseous components of a disc. Generally we do not find a unique pattern speed in these simulations, rather the pattern speed decreases with radius, and the pattern speed for individual spiral arms differ. The maximum pattern speed is ~20 km/s/kpc for the discs with a live stellar component, decreasing to 5 km/s/kpc at the edge of the spiral perturbation. When only the gas is modeled, Omega_p is typically very low (5 km/s/kpc) at all radii.
We complement a recent ApJ Letter by Luo et al. by comparing the fraction of starburst galaxies which are interacting with the overall fraction of interacting galaxies in the nearby galaxy population (within 40 Mpc). We confirm that in starburst galaxies the fraction of interacting galaxies is enhanced, by a factor of around 2, but crucially we do so by studying a sample of almost 1500 of the nearest galaxies, including many dwarfs and irregulars. We discuss how adjusting the starburst definition influences the final result and conclude that our result is stable. We find significantly lower fr…
We use the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on galaxies as they fall into clusters. We find that SIDM galaxies follow similar orbits to their Cold Dark Matter (CDM) counterparts, but end up with ${\sim}$25 per cent less mass by the present day. One in three SIDM galaxies are entirely disrupted, compared to one in five CDM galaxies. However, the excess stripping will be harder to observe than suggested by previous DM-only simulations because the most stripped galaxies form cores and also lose stars: the most dis…
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
A recent study shows that bars can be induced via interaction of galaxy clusters, but it has been unclear if the bar formation by the interaction between clusters is related to the enhancement of star formation. We study galaxies in 105 galaxy clusters at $0.015<z<0.060$ detected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, in order to examine whether the fraction of star-forming galaxies ($f_\mathrm{sf}$) in 16 interacting clusters is enhanced compared with that of the other non-interacting clusters and to investigate the possible connection between the $f_\mathrm{sf}$ enhancement and the bar formatio…
We use optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data from 103 nearby galaxies at different stages of the merging event, from close pairs to merger remnants provided by the CALIFA survey, to study the impact of the interaction in the specific star formation and oxygen abundance on different galactic scales. To disentangle the effect of the interaction and merger from internal processes, we compared our results with a control sample of 80 non-interacting galaxies. We confirm the moderate enhancement (2-3 times) of specific star formation for interacting galaxies in central regions as reported …
I show that gravitational scattering of dark-matter objects of 10^4 solar masses and speeds of 10 km/s, provides the cross-section per unit mass required in self-interacting dark matter models that alleviate the small-scale structure challenges to the collisionless cold dark matter model. For primordial objects of mass 10^4*(M_4) solar masses, moving at the velocity dispersion characteristic of dwarf galaxies, 10*(v_1) km/s, the cross-section per unit mass for gravitational scattering is 10*[M_4/(v_1)^4] cm^2/g. The steep decline in interaction with increasing velocity explains why self-intera…
Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models offer one way to reconcile inconsistencies between observations and predictions from collisionless cold dark matter (CDM) models on dwarf-galaxy scales. In order to incorporate the effects of both baryonic and SIDM interactions, we study a suite of cosmological-baryonic simulations of Milky-Way (MW)-mass galaxies from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE-2) project where we vary the SIDM self-interaction cross-section $σ/m$. We compare the shape of the main dark matter (DM) halo at redshift $z=0$ predicted by SIDM simulations (at $σ/m=0.1$, $1…
There are indications that the magnetic field evolution in galaxies might be massively shaped by tidal interactions and mergers between galaxies. The details of the connection between the evolution of magnetic fields and that of their host galaxies is still a field of research. We use a combined approach of magnetohydrodynamics for the baryons and an N-body scheme for the dark matter to investigate magnetic field amplification and evolution in interacting galaxies. We find that, for two colliding equal-mass galaxies and for varying initial relative spatial orientations, magnetic fields are amp…
Far-infrared (FIR)--radio correlation is a well-established empirical connection between continuum radio and dust emission of star-forming galaxies, often used as a tool in determining star-formation rates. Here we expand the point made by Murphy (2013) that in the case of some interacting star-forming galaxies there is a non-thermal emission from the gas bridge in between them, which might cause a dispersion in this correlation. Galactic interactions and mergers have been known to give rise to tidal shocks and disrupt morphologies especially in the smaller of the interacting components. Here …
Interacting galaxies are known to have higher global rates of star formation on average than normal galaxies, relative to their stellar masses. Using UV and IR photometry combined with new and published H-alpha images, we have compared the star formation rates of ~700 star forming complexes in 46 nearby interacting galaxy pairs with those of regions in 39 normal spiral galaxies. The interacting galaxies have proportionally more regions with high star formation rates than the spirals. The most extreme regions in the interacting systems lie at the intersections of spiral/tidal structures, where …
Late-type galaxies falling into a cluster would evolve being influenced by the interactions with both the cluster and the nearby cluster member galaxies. Most numerical studies, however, tend to focus on the effects of the former with little work done on those of the latter. We thus perform a numerical study on the evolution of a late-type galaxy interacting with neighboring early-type galaxies at high speed, using hydrodynamic simulations. Based on the information obtained from the Coma cluster, we set up the simulations for the case where a Milky Way-like late-type galaxy experiences six con…
We investigate the influence of interactions on the star formation by studying a sample of almost 1500 of the nearest galaxies, all within a distance of ~45 Mpc. We define the massive star formation rate (SFR), as measured from far-IR emission, and the specific star formation rate (SSFR), which is the former quantity normalised by the stellar mass of the galaxy, and explore their distribution with morphological type and with stellar mass. We then calculate the relative enhancement of these quantities for each galaxy by normalising them by the median SFR and SSFR values of individual control po…
Dark matter self interactions can leave distinctive signatures on the properties of satellite galaxies around Milky Way--like hosts through their impact on tidal stripping, ram pressure, and gravothermal collapse. We delineate the regions of self-interacting dark matter parameter space -- specified by interaction cross section and a velocity scale -- where each of these effects dominates, and show how the relative mass loss depends on the satellite's initial mass, density profile and orbit. We obtain novel, conservative constraints in this parameter space using Milky Way satellite galaxies wit…
Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) has long been proposed as a solution to small scale problems posed by standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM). We use numerical simulations to study the effect of dark matter interactions on the morphology of disk galaxies falling into galaxy clusters. The effective drag force on dark matter leads to offsets of the stellar disk with respect to the surrounding halo, causing distortions in the disk. For anisotropic scattering cross-sections of 0.5 and 1.0$\,\textrm{cm}^{2}\textrm{g}^{-1}$, we show that potentially observable warps, asymmetries, and thickening of the d…

We study the atomic gas content and the central stellar mass concentration for a sample of almost 1500 nearby galaxies to investigate the nature of starbursts and the influence of galaxy-galaxy interactions on star formation (SF). We used a sample of catalogued interacting and non-interacting galaxies in the S$^4$G survey - along with archival HI gas masses, stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$), and SF rates from $IRAS$ far-infrared fluxes - and calculate depletion times and gas fractions. We traced the central stellar mass concentration from the inner slope of the stellar component of the rotation cur…
We have investigated properties of the interstellar medium in interacting galaxies in early and mid-stage using mapping data of 12CO(1-0) and HI.Assuming the standard CO-H2 conversion factor, we found no difference in molecular gas mass, atomic gas mass, and total gas mass (a sum of atomic and molecular gas mass) between interacting galaxies and isolated galaxies. However, interacting galaxies have a higher global molecular gas fraction, global fmol (a ratio of molecular gas mass to total gas mass averaged over a whole galaxy), than isolated galaxies. The distribution of local molecular gas fr…
Two mathematical models of three bodies of variable masses are used to obtain a qualitative description of two interacting galaxies with mass exchange and mass loss. The reference system is centred on the largest body (the most massive galaxy), and the other two bodies are allowed to move around this one under the laws of gravity. The third body, which simulated the mass lost by the second galaxy in the form of a tail, increases its mass due to the mass lost by the second body and follows its trajectory. We are interested in knowing the time evolution of the separation of the two bulges of the…
We present a fit to observational data in an asymmetric self-interacting dark matter model using our recently calculated cross sections that incorporate both $t$-channel and $u$-channel exchanges in the scattering of identical particles. We find good fits to the data ranging from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters, and equivalent relative velocities from $\sim 20$ km/sec to $\gtrsim 10^3$ km/s. We compare our results with previous fits that used only $t$-channel exchange contributions to the scattering.

The dynamical history of most merging galaxies is not well understood. Correlations between galaxy interaction and star formation have been found in previous studies, but require the context of the physical history of merging systems for full insight into the processes that lead to enhanced star formation. We present the results of simulations that reconstruct the orbit trajectories and disturbed morphologies of pairs of interacting galaxies. With the use of a restricted three-body simulation code and the help of Citizen Scientists, we sample 10^5 points in parameter space for each system. We …
The rotation curves of spiral galaxies exhibit a diversity that has been difficult to understand in the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm. We show that the self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model provides excellent fits to the rotation curves of a sample of galaxies with asymptotic velocities in the 25 to 300 km/s range that exemplify the full range of diversity. We only assume the halo concentration-mass relation predicted by the CDM model and a fixed value of the self-interaction cross section. In dark matter dominated galaxies, thermalization due to self-interactions creates large cores and …
Spectral data cubes of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 2535 and NGC 2536 (the Arp 82 system) targeting bright emission lines in the visible band, obtained with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (iFTS) SITELLE attached to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), are presented. Analysis of H$\upalpha$ velocity maps reveals a bar in $\rm NGC\,2536$. In $\rm NGC\,2535$, we find strong non-circular motions outside the ocular ring, in the elliptical arc and tidal tails of $\rm NGC\,2535$ and a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric position angles. We detect 155 HII regio…
We have identified 1027 star forming complexes in a sample of 46 galaxies from the Spirals, Bridges, and Tails (SB&T) sample of interacting galaxies, and 693 star forming complexes in a sample of 38 non-interacting spiral (NIS) galaxies in $8\rm{μm}$ observations from the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We have used archival multi-wavelength UV-to IR observations to fit the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of our clumps with the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE) using a double exponentially declined star formation history (SFH). We derive SFRs, stellar masses, ages and frac…
We investigate the relations between the properties of bars and their host galaxies in a sample of 77 nearby barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types and luminosities, with 34 SB0-SBa and 43 SBab-SBc galaxies. The sample includes all the galaxies with reliable direct measurement of their bar pattern speed based on long-slit or integral-field stellar spectroscopy using the Tremaine-Weinberg method. We limited our analysis to the galaxies with a relatively small relative error on the bar pattern speed (smaller than 50 per cent) and not hosting an ultrafast bar. For each gala…
Restricted three-body codes have a proven ability to recreate much of the disturbed morphology of actual interacting galaxies. As more sophisticated n-body models were developed and computer speed increased, restricted three-body codes fell out of favor. However, their supporting role for performing wide searches of parameter space when fitting orbits to real systems demonstrates a continuing need for their use. Here we present the model and algorithm used in the JSPAM code. A precursor of this code was originally described in 1990, and was called SPAM. We have recently updated the software wi…
CO observations of the interacting galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207 are combined with HI, Halpha and 24 microns to study the star formation rate (SFR) surface density as a function of the gas surface density. More than half of the high SFR regions are HI dominated. When compared to other galaxies, these HI-dominated regions have excess SFRs relative to their molecular gas surface densities but normal SFRs relative to their total gas surface densities. The HI-dominated regions are mostly located in the outer part of NGC 2207, where the HI velocity dispersion is high, 40 - 50 km/s. We suggest that …
Using the GADGET-2 N-body code, we make a study of the galaxy morphology and merging time due to two interacting galaxies (for the same types and different sizes and masses, $1:1$ and $1:10$ ratio masses) merging due to gravity interaction. This is done for different initial relative orientation and rotation of these galaxies (modes of interaction) but with the same relative bulge separation and the same relative initial velocities. It was found that the resulting galaxy morphology resemble many of the observed galaxies in our Universe, and that, in general, a binary galaxy system with 1:10 ma…
Several proposed models for dark matter posit the existence of self-interaction processes that can impact the shape of dark matter halos, making them more spherical than the ellipsoidal halos of collisionless dark matter. One method of probing the halo shapes, and thus the strength of the dark matter self-interaction, is by measuring the shape of the X-ray gas that traces the gravitational potential in relaxed elliptical galaxies. In this work we identify a sample of 11 relaxed, isolated elliptical galaxies and measure the ellipticity of the gravitating matter using X-ray images from the XMM-N…
We have observed three luminous infrared galaxy systems (LIRGS) which are pairs of interacting galaxies, with the Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system (GH$α$FaS) mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and combined the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of these systems in CO emission to compare the physical properties of the star formation regions and the molecular gas clouds, and specifically the internal kinematics of the star forming regions. We identified 88 star forming regions in the H$α$ emission data-cub…
We have observed 10 interacting galaxy pairs using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system) on the $4.2\rm{m}$ William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma. We present here the H$α$ surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps for the 10 systems we have not previously observed using this technique, as well as the physical properties (sizes, H$α$ luminosities and velocity dispersion) of 1259 HII regions from the full sample. We also derive the physical properties of 1054 HII regions in a sample of 28 isola…
We present a study of the effect of bulge mass on the evolution of bar pattern speed in isolated disk galaxies using N-body simulations. Earlier studies have shown that disk stars at the inner resonances can transfer a significant amount of angular momentum to the dark matter halo and this results in the slow down of the bar pattern speed. In this paper we investigate how the mass of the other spheroidal component, the bulge, affects bar pattern speeds. In our galaxy models the initial bars are all rotating fast as the R parameter, which is the ratio of the corotation radius to bar radius is l…
ALMA observations of CO(1-0) emission in the interacting galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207 are used to determine the properties of molecular clouds and their association with star-forming regions observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. Half of the CO mass is in 249 clouds each more massive than 4.0x10^5Mo. The mass distribution functions for the CO clouds and star complexes in a galactic-scale shock front in IC 2163 both have a slope on a log-log plot of -0.7, similar to what is observed in Milky Way clouds. The molecular cloud mass function is steeper in NGC 2207. The CO distribution in NGC 220…
The classification of galaxy mergers and isolated disks is key for understanding the relative importance of galaxy interactions and secular evolution during the assembly of galaxies. The kinematic properties of galaxies as traced by emission lines have been used to suggest the existence of a significant population of high-z star-forming galaxies consistent with isolated rotating disks. However, recent studies have cautioned that post-coalescence mergers may also display disk-like kinematics. To further investigate the robustness of merger/disk classifications based on kinematic properties, we …
