We propose a scheme of "$R$-type" photoassociative adiabatic passage (PAP) to create polar molecular condensates from two different species of ultracold atoms. Due to the presence of a quasi-coherent population trapping state in the scheme, it is possible to associate atoms into molecules with a \textit{low-power} photoassociation (PA) laser. One remarkable advantage of our scheme is that a tunable atom-molecule coupling strength can be achieved by using a time-dependent PA field, which exhibits larger flexibility than using a tunable magnetic field. In addition, our results show that the PA intensity required in the "$R$-type" PAP could be greatly reduced compared to that in a conventional "$Λ$-type" one.
We study the process of nonlinear stimulated Raman adiabatic passage within a classical mean-fieldframework. Depending on the sign of interaction, the breakdown of adiabaticity in the interactingnonintegrable system is not related to bifurcations in the energy landscape, but rather to the emergence ofquasistochastic motion that drains the followed quasistationary state. Consequently, faster sweep rate, rather than quasistatic variation of parameters, is better for adiabaticity
We generalize the idea of chainwise stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) [Kuznetsova \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. A \textbf{78}, 021402(R) (2008)] to a photoassociation-based chainwise atom-molecule system, with the goal of directly converting two-species atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) into a ground polar molecular BEC. We pay particular attention to the intermediate Raman laser fields, a control knob inaccessible to the usual three-level model. We find that an appropriate exploration of both the intermediate laser fields and the stability property of the atom-molecule STIRAP can …
We apply the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to a three-well system and show analytically that coherent transport via adiabatic passage (CTAP) of $N$ non-interacting particles across the chain is possible. We investigate the effect of detuning the middle well to recover CTAP when on-site interparticle interactions would otherwise disrupt the transport. The case of small interactions is restated using first-order perturbation theory to develop criteria for adibaticity that define the regime where CTAP is possible. Within this regime we investigate restricting the Hilbert space to the minimum necessary…
We develop a multi-photon adiabatic passage to realize a highly efficient Rydberg excitation in a four-level ladder-type atomic system. The adiabatic passage is based on the existence of a novel quasi-dark state in the cascade excitation system where the frequencies of the lasers are appropriately chirped with time. We also investigate the influence of the interatomic Rydberg interaction on the passage and extend its application to the preparation of anti-blockade Rydberg atom pairs in the Rydberg blockade regime.
We theoretically examine three-well interferometry in Bose-Einstein condensates using adiabatic passage. Specifically, we demonstrate that a fractional coherent transport adiabatic passage protocol enables stable spatial splitting in the presence of nonlinear interactions. A reversal of this protocol produces a coherent recombination of the BEC with a phase-dependent population of the three wells. The effect of nonlinear interactions on the interferometric measurement is quantified and found to lead to an enhancement in sensitivity for moderate interaction strengths.
By adiabatically manipulating tunneling amplitudes of cold atoms in a periodic potential with a multiple sublattice structure, we are able to coherently transfer atoms from a sublattice to another without populating the intermediate sublattice, which can be regarded as a spatial analogue of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. A key is the existence of dark eigenstates forming a flat band in a Lieb-type optical lattice. We also successfully observe a matter-wave analogue of Autler-Townes doublet using the same setup. This work shed light on a novel kind of coherent control of cold atoms in opti…
Spatial adiabatic passage processes for ultracold atoms trapped in tunnel-coupled cylindrically symmetric concentric potentials are investigated. Specifically, we discuss the matter-wave analogue of the rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) technique for a high fidelity and robust loading of a single atom into a harmonic ring potential from a harmonic trap, and for its transport between two concentric rings. We also consider a system of three concentric rings and investigate the transport of a single atom between the innermost and the outermost rings making use of the matter-wave analogue of the stimu…
We study the effect of interactions on the conversion of atomic -to molecular Bose-Einstein condensates via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Both energetic instability during avoided crossings and dynamical instability during chaotic intervals limit adiabaticity and impose {\em low} sweep-rate boundaries on the efficiency of the process. For the diabatic traverse of avoided crossings, we find a reciprocal power-law dependence of the final unconverted population on sweep rate. For the traverse of chaos, we find a sharp low-rate boundary determined by the dynamical instability parameters. The…
We propose the use of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) to offer a fast high fidelity method of performing SU(2) rotations on spinor Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). Past demonstrations of BEC optical control suffer from difficulties arising from collective enhancement of spontaneous emission and inefficient two-photon transitions originating from selection rules. We present here a novel scheme which allows for arbitrary coherent rotations of two-component BECs while overcoming these issues. Numerical tests of the method show that for BECs of \ce{^{87}Rb} with up to $ 10^4 $ atoms an…
We study the many-body dynamics of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in the presence of on-site interactions. In the classical mean-field limit, explored in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 250405 (2018), interaction-induced chaos leads to the breakdown of adiabaticity under the quasi-static variation of the parameters, thus producing {\em low} sweep rate boundaries on efficient population transfer. We show that for the corresponding many-body system, alternative quantum pathways from the initial to the target state, open up at even slower sweep rates. These quantum detours avoid the chaotic class…
We investigate spatial adiabatic passage of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a triple well potential within the three-mode approximation. By rewriting the dynamics in the so-called time-dependent dark/dressed basis, we analytically derive the optimal conditions for the non-linear parameter and the on-site energies of each well to achieve a highly efficient condensate transport. We show that the non-linearity yields a high-efficiency plateau for the condensate transport as a function of the on-site energy difference between the outermost wells, favoring the robustness of the transport. We also ana…
Adiabatic techniques offer some of the most promising tools to achieve high-fidelity control of the centre-of-mass degree of freedom of single atoms. As their main requirement is to follow an eigenstate of the system, constraints on timing and field strength stability are usually low, especially for trapped systems. In this paper we present a detailed example of a technique to adiabatically transport a single atom between different waveguides on an atom chip. To ensure that all conditions are fulfilled, we carry out fully three dimensional simulations of the system, using experimentally realis…
We develop a scheme for deterministic generation of an entangled state between two atoms on different Rydberg states via a chirped adiabatic passage, which directly connects the initial ground and target entangled states and also does not request the normally needed blockade effect. The occupancy of intermediate states suffers from a strong reduction via two pulses with proper time-dependent detunings and the electromagnetically induced transparency condition. By solving the analytical expressions of eigenvalues and eigenstates of a two-atom system, we investigate the optimal parameters for gu…
We report on sawtooth wave adiabatic passage (SWAP) slowing of bosonic and fermionic dysprosium isotopes by using a 136 kHz wide transition at 626 nm. A beam of precooled atoms is further decelerated in one dimension by the SWAP force and the amount of atoms at near zero velocity is measured. We demonstrate that the SWAP slowing can be twice as fast as in a conventional optical molasses operated on the same transition. In addition, we investigate the parameter range for which the SWAP force is efficiently usable in our set-up, and relate the results to the adiabaticity condition. Furthermore, …
We propose to use adiabatic rapid passage with a chirped laser pulse in the strong dipole blockade regime to deterministically excite only one Rydberg atom from randomly loaded optical dipole traps or optical lattices. The chirped laser excitation is shown to be insensitive to the random number \textit{N} of the atoms in the traps. Our method overcomes the problem of the $\sqrt {N} $ dependence of the collective Rabi frequency, which was the main obstacle for deterministic single-atom excitation in the ensembles with unknown \textit{N}, and can be applied for single-atom loading of dipole trap…
High-fidelity entangled Bell states are of great interest in quantum physics. Entanglement of ultracold neutral atoms in two spatially separated optical dipole traps is promising for implementation of quantum computing and quantum simulation and for investigation of Bell states of material objects. We propose a new method to entangle two atoms via long-range Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. Alternatively to previous approaches, based on Rydberg blockade, we consider radiofrequency-assisted Stark-tuned Förster resonances in Rb Rydberg atoms. To reduce the sensitivity of the fidelity of Bell states …
We present a new and efficient implementation of Raman cooling of trapped atoms. It uses Raman pulses with an appropriate frequency chirp to realize a velocity selective excitation through a rapid adiabatic passage. This method allows to address in a single pulse a large number of non zero atomic velocity classes and it produces a nearly unity transfer efficiency. We demonstrate this cooling method using cesium atoms in a far-detuned crossed dipole trap. Three-dimensional cooling of $1 \times 10^{5}$ atoms down to $2 μ$K is performed in 100 ms. In this preliminary experiment the final atomic d…
