We have investigated the odd-parity preference of the WMAP 7 year power spectrum. Comparison with simulation shows the odd-parity preference of WMAP data (2<= l <=22) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We have investigated its origins, and ruled out some of non-cosmological origins such as asymmetric beams, noise and cut-sky effect. We also find primordial origin requires |Re[Φ(\mathbf k)]|\ll|Im[Φ(\mathbf k)]| for k\lesssim 22/η_0, where η_0 is the present conformal time. Multipoles associated with the odd-parity preference happen to coincide with some of other CMB anomalies. Therefore, there may exist a common origin, whether cosmological or not. Besides, we find it likely that low quadrupole power is the part of this odd-parity preference anomaly rather than an isolated one. The Planck surveyor, which possesses wide frequency coverage and systematics distinct from the WMAP, may allow us to resolve the mystery of the anomalous odd-parity preference.
The Parity symmetry of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) pattern as seen by WMAP 7 is tested jointly in temperature and polarization at large angular scale. A Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator is applied to the WMAP 7 year low resolution maps to compute all polarized CMB angular power spectra. The analysis is supported by 10000 realistic Monte-Carlo realizations. We confirm the previously reported Parity anomaly for TT in the range $δ\ell=[2,22]$ at $> 99.5%$ C.L.. No anomalies have been detected in TT for a wider $\ell$ range (up to $\ell_{max}=40$). No violations have been fou…
We have investigated non-Gaussianity of our early Universe by comparing the parity asymmetry of the WMAP power spectrum with simulations. We find that odd-parity preference of the WMAP data (2<= l <=18) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We find it likely that low quadrupole power is part of this parity asymmetry rather than an isolated anomaly. Futher investigation is required to find out whether the origin of this anomaly is cosmological or systematic effect. The data from Planck surveyor, which has systematics distinct from the WMAP, will help us to resolve the origin of the anomalous odd-par…
The anomaly against the Gaussianity in the WMAP data was alleged to be due to insufficient handling of beam asymmetries. In this paper we investigate this issue and develop a method to estimate the shape of the inflight effective beam, particularly the asymmetry and azimuthal orientation. We divide the whole map into square patches and exploit the information in the Fourier space. For patches containing bright extra-galactic point sources, we can directly estimate their shapes, from which the inflight effective beam manifests itself. For those without, we estimate the pattern via perturbing th…
We test the hemispherical power asymmetry of the WMAP 7-year low-resolution temperature and polarization maps. We consider two natural estimators for such an asymmetry and exploit our implementation of an optimal angular power spectrum estimator for all the six CMB spectra. By scanning the whole sky through a sample of 24 directions, we search for asymmetries in the power spectra of the two hemispheres, comparing the results with Monte Carlo simulations drawn from the WMAP 7-year best-fit model. Our analysis extends previous results to the polarization sector. The level of asymmetry on the ILC…
Non-commutative geometry at inflation can give arise to parity violating modulations of the primordial power spectrum. We develop the statistical tools needed for investigating whether these modulations are evident in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The free parameters of the models are two directional parameters (theta, phi), the signal amplitude A*, and a tilt parameter n* that modulates correlation power on different scales. The signature of the model corresponds to a kind of hemispherical power asymmetry. When analyzing the 7-year WMAP data we find a weak signature for a preferred di…
We revisit the question of hemispherical power asymmetry in the WMAP and Planck temperature sky maps by measuring the local variance over the sky and on disks of various sizes. For the 2013 Planck sky map we find that none of the 1000 available isotropic Planck "Full Focal Plane" simulations have a larger variance asymmetry than that estimated from the data, suggesting the presence of an anisotropic signature formally significant at least at the $3.3σ$ level. For the WMAP 9-year data we find that 5 out of 1000 simulations have a larger asymmetry. The preferred direction for the asymmetry from …
(Abridged)Motivated by the recent results of Hansen et al. (2008) concerning a noticeable hemispherical power asymmetry in the WMAP data on small angular scales, we revisit the dipole modulated signal model introduced by Gordon et al. (2005). This model assumes that the true CMB signal consists of a Gaussian isotropic random field modulated by a dipole, and is characterized by an overall modulation amplitude, A, and a preferred direction, p. Previous analyses of this model has been restricted to very low resolution due to computational cost. In this paper, we double the angular resolution, and…
We have investigated the angular correlation in the recent CMB data. In addition to the known large-angle correlation anomaly, we find the lack of correlation at small angles with high statistical significance. We have investigated various non-cosmological contamination and additionally WMAP team's simulated data. However, we have not found a definite cause. In the angular power spectrum of WMAP data, there exist anomalous odd-parity preference at low multipoles. Noting the equivalence between the power spectrum and the correlation, we have investigated the association between the lack of larg…
Data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) had a profound impact on the understanding of a variety of physical processes in the early phases of the Universe and on the estimation of the cosmological parameters. Here, the 7-year WMAP data are used to trace the disk and the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We analyzed the temperature excess in three WMAP bands (W, V, and Q) by dividing the region of the sky around M31 into several concentric circular areas. We studied the robustness of the detected temperature excess by c…
We study the power asymmetry between even and odd multipoles in the multipolar expansion of CMB temperature data from WMAP, recently reported in the literature. We introduce an alternate statistic which probes this effect more sensitively. We find that the data is highly anomalous and consistently outside $2σ$ significance level in the whole multipole range $l=[2,101]$. We examine the possibility that this asymmetry may be caused by the foreground cleaning procedure or by residual foregrounds. By direct simulations, using the Planck Sky Model for foregrounds we rule out this possibility. We al…
We propose a framework of Finsler space-time to explain the observed parity asymmetry and the power deficit in the low-$\ell$ ($2\leqslant \ell \leqslant 29$) multipole range of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. In the $3+1$ dimensional space-time, the three-dimensional space is described by a Randers-Finsler space, which is spatially irreversible, inducing the parity asymmetry in the CMB angular power spectrum. We estimate the constraints on the two parameters introduced by Finsler space-time via analyzing the low-$\ell$ angular power spectrum in PLANCK 2015 CMB temp…
The observed pattern of linear polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons is a sensitive probe of physics violating parity symmetry under inversion of spatial coordinates. A new parity-violating interaction might have rotated the plane of linear polarization by an angle $β$ as the CMB photons have been traveling for more than 13 billion years. This effect is known as "cosmic birefringence." In this paper, we present new measurements of cosmic birefringence from a joint analysis of polarization data from two space missions, Planck and WMAP. This dataset covers a wide range of…
Parity violation in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation has been confirmed by recent Planck observation. In this paper, we extend our previous work [P. Naselsky et al. Astrophys. J. {\bf 749}, 31 (2012)] on the directional properties of CMB parity asymmetry by considering the Planck data of the CMB temperature anisotropy. We define six kinds of the directional statistics and find that they all indicate the odd-parity preference of CMB data. In addition, we find the preferred axes of all these statistics strongly correlate with the preferred axes of the CMB kinematic dipole, quadrup…
The temperature fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) are supposed to be distributed randomly in both magnitude and phase, following to the simplest model of inflation. In this paper, we look at the odd and even multipoles of the spherical harmonic decomposition of the CMB, and the different characteristics of these, giving rise to a parity asymmetry. We compare the even and odd multipoles in the CMB power spectrum, and also the even and odd mean angles. We find for the multipoles of the power spectrum, that there is power excess in odd multipoles, compared to even ones, meanin…
The cosmic microwave background radiation is supposed to be Gaussian and this hypothesis is in good agreement with the recent very accurate measurements. Nonetheless a tiny amount of non-Gaussianity is predicted by the standard inflation scenario, while more exotic models suggest a higher degree of non-Gaussianity. Tightly constraining the level of Gaussianity in the CMB data represents then a fundamental handle to understand the physics and the origin of our universe. By means of needlets, a novel rendition of wavelets, characterised by excellent properties of localisations both in harmonic a…
Parity violation found in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation is a crucial clue for the non-standard cosmological model or the possible contamination of various foreground residuals and/or calibration of the CMB data sets. In this paper, we study the directional properties of the CMB parity asymmetry by excluding the $m=0$ modes in the definition of parity parameters. We find that the preferred directions of the parity parameters coincide with the CMB kinematic dipole, which implies that the CMB parity asymmetry may be connected with the possible contamination of the residual dipol…
We apply the needlet formalism to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year data, looking for evidence of non-Gaussianity in the bispectrum of the needlet amplitudes. We confirm earlier findings of an asymmetry in the non-Gaussianity between the northern and southern galactic hemispheres. We attempt to isolate which scales and geometrical configurations are most anomalous, and find the bispectrum is most significant on large scales and in the more co-linear configurations, and also in the `squeezed' configurations. However, these anomalies do not appear to affect the estimate of the non-…

(Abridged) A simple six-parameter LCDM model provides a successful fit to WMAP data, both when the data are analyzed alone and in combination with other cosmological data. Even so, it is appropriate to search for any hints of deviations from the now standard model of cosmology, which includes inflation, dark energy, dark matter, baryons, and neutrinos. The cosmological community has subjected the WMAP data to extensive and varied analyses. While there is widespread agreement as to the overall success of the six-parameter LCDM model, various "anomalies" have been reported relative to that model…
The largest anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is the 3 mK kinematic dipole reflecting our motion with respect to the CMB frame and pointed in the direction $(l, b) = (264^\circ, +48^\circ)$ in Galactic coordinates. We introduce the concept of the ring of attraction (RA), which is orthogonal to the axis of the kinematic dipole. These directions overlap with the zone of percolation for the kinematic dipole, where its amplitude almost vanishes. We show that along this ring are oriented the directions of the dipole modulation of the CMB, and positions of the peaks responsible for…
A remarkable similarity between the large-scale non-Gaussian pattern of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperatures obtained by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission and the distribution feature of observation numbers is noted. Motivated from such a similarity, in this work we check the WMAP data for the correlation between pixel temperature t and observation number N. Systematic effect of imbalance differential observation and significant t-N correlation in magnitude, distribution non-Gaussianity and north-south asymmetry are found. Our results indicate that, for precision co…
If a primordial magnetic field in the universe has non-zero helicity, the violation of parity symmetry results in non-zero correlations between cosmic microwave background temperature and B-mode polarization. In this paper we derive approximations to the relevant microwave background power spectra arising from a helical magnetic field. Using the cross-power spectrum between temperature and B-mode polarization from the WMAP nine-year data, we set a 95\% confidence level upper limit on the helicity amplitude to be 10 nG$^2$ Gpc for helicity spectral index $n_H = -1.9$, for a cosmological magneti…
A dataset of 126,501 spiral galaxies taken from Sloan Digital Sky Survey was used to analyze the large-scale galaxy handedness in different regions of the local universe. The analysis was automated by using a transformation of the galaxy images to their radial intensity plots, which allows automatic analysis of the galaxy spin and can therefore be used to analyze a large galaxy dataset. The results show that the local universe (z<0.3) is not isotropic in terms of galaxy spin, with probability P<5.8*10^-6 of such asymmetry to occur by chance. The handedness asymmetries exhibit an approximate co…
We investigate the sources of parity asymmetry in the CMB temperature maps using a pixel domain approach. We demonstrate that this anomaly is mainly associated with the presence of two pairs of high asymmetry regions. The first pair of peaks with Galactic coordinates $(l, b) = (212^\circ, -21^\circ)$ and $(32^\circ, 21^\circ)$ is associated with the Northern Galactic Spur and the direction of the dipole modulation of the power spectrum of the CMB anisotropy. The other pair ($(l, b)=(332^\circ, -8^\circ)$ and $(152^\circ, 8^\circ)$) is located within the Galactic plane (the Galactic Cold Spot a…
A Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator is applied to the WMAP 5 year low resolution maps to compute the CMB angular power spectra at large scales for both temperature and polarization. Estimates and error bars for the six angular power spectra are provided and compared, when possible, to those obtained by the WMAP team, without finding any inconsistency. The conditional likelihood slices are also computed for the $C_{\ell}$ of all the six power spectra from $\ell =2$ to 10 through a pixel based likelihood code. Both the codes treat the covariance for $(T,Q,U)$ in a single matrix withou…
There is currently a debate over the existence of claimed statistical anomalies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), recently confirmed in Planck data. Recent work has focussed on methods for measuring statistical significance, on masks and on secondary anisotropies as potential causes of the anomalies. We investigate simultaneously the method for accounting for masked regions and the foreground integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signal. We search for trends in different years of WMAP CMB data with different mask treatments. We reconstruct the ISW field due to the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS…
We consider the possible detection of parity violation at the linear level in gravity using polarized anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. Since such a parity violation would lead to non-zero TB and EB correlations, this makes those odd-parity angular power spectra a potential probe of parity violation in the gravitational sector. These spectra are modeled incorporating the impact of lensing and we explore their possible detection in the context of small-scale (balloon-borne or ground-based) experiments and a future satellite mission dedicated to B-mode detection. We assess the sta…
We discuss exploration for isotropic gravitational wave backgrounds around 1 mHz by correlation analysis, targeting both parity odd and even polarization modes. Even though the space interferometer LISA alone cannot probe the two modes due to cancellations, the outlook is being changed drastically by the strong development of other space detectors such as Taiji. In fact, a heliocentric interferometer network holds a preferable geometrical symmetry {illuminated by a virtual sphere off-center from the Sun}. By utilizing an internal symmetry of data streams, we can optimally decompose the odd and…
For the simplest inflation models, the recent detection of a large primordial B-mode polarization signal by the BICEP2 experiment indicates a slight tension with the upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, from the Planck satellite. Here, we discuss spatially varying $r$ as a possible explanation for this discrepancy. This idea seems attractive since it may also explain part of the hemispherical temperature power asymmetry seen by WMAP and Planck at large angular scales. If these two aspects are indeed connected, the model suggests that in the Northern hemisphere $r$ should be much sma…
Both WMAP and Planck data show a significant odd-multipole preference in the large scales of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. If this pattern originates from cosmological effects, then it can be considered a crucial clue for a violation in the cosmological principle. By defining various direction dependent statistics in the full-sky Planck 2015 maps (see, for instance, Naselsky et al. (2012); W. Zhao (2014)), we found that the CMB parity asymmetry has a preferred direction, which is independent of the choices of the statistics. In particular, this preferred axis …
We investigate the baryon asymmetry in the supersymmetry Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky axion model without R-parity. It turns out that the R-parity violating terms economically explain the atmospheric mass-squared difference of neutrinos and the appropriate amount of baryon asymmetry through the Affleck-Dine mechanism. In this model, the axion is a promising candidate for the dark matter and the axion isocurvature perturbation is suppressed due to the large field values of Peccei-Quinn fields. Remarkably, in some parameter regions explaining the baryon asymmetry and the axion dark matter …
A Chern-Simons coupling of a new scalar field to electromagnetism may give rise to cosmological birefringence, a rotation of the linear polarization of electromagnetic waves as they propagate over cosmological distances. Prior work has sought this rotation, assuming the rotation angle to be uniform across the sky, by looking for the parity-violating TB and EB correlations a uniform rotation produces in the CMB temperature/polarization. However, if the scalar field that gives rise to cosmological birefringence has spatial fluctuations, then the rotation angle may vary across the sky. Here we se…
Parity-odd non-Gaussianities create a variety of temperature bispectra in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), defined in the domain: $\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm odd}$. These models are yet unconstrained in the literature, that so far focused exclusively on the more common parity-even scenarios. In this work, we provide the first experimental constraints on parity-odd bispectrum signals in WMAP 9-year temperature data, using a separable modal parity-odd estimator. Comparing theoretical bispectrum templates to the observed bispectrum, we place constraints on the so-called nonlineality pa…
A well-tested and validated Gibbs sampling code, that performs component separation and CMB power spectrum estimation, was applied to the {\it WMAP} 5-yr data. Using a simple model consisting of CMB, noise, monopoles and dipoles, a ``per pixel'' low-frequency power-law (fitting for both amplitude and spectral index), and a thermal dust template with fixed spectral index, we found that the low-$\ell$ ($\ell < 50$) CMB power spectrum is in good agreement with the published {\it WMAP}5 results. Residual monopoles and dipoles were found to be small ($\lesssim 3 μ$K) or negligible in the 5-yr data.…
We investigate whether the baryon asymmetry of the universe is explained in the framework of the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with R-parity violating interactions. It is shown that the Affleck-Dine mechanism naturally works via a trilinear interaction $LLE^c$, $LQD^c$, or $U^cD^cD^c$, if the magnitude of the coupling corresponding to the operator $λ$, $λ'$, or $λ''$ is sufficiently small. The formation of Q-balls and their subsequent evolution are also discussed. The present baryon asymmetry can be explained in the parameter region where R-parity is mildly violated $10^{-9}\l…
New data from WMAP have appeared, related to both the fractional energy density in relativistic species at decoupling and also the primordial helium abundance, at the same time as other independent observational estimates suggest a higher value of the latter than previously estimated. All the data are consistent with the possibility that the effective number of relativistic species in the radiation gas at the time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis may exceed the value of 3, as expected from a CP-symmetric population of the known neutrino species. Here we explore the possibility that new neutrino phy…
The hemispherical power asymmetry observed by Planck and WMAP can be interpreted as due to a spatially-varying and scale-dependent component of the adiabatic power spectrum. We derive general constraints on the magnitude and scale-dependence of a component with a dipole spatial variation. The spectral index and the running of the spectral index can be significantly shifted from their inflation model values, resulting in a smaller spectral index and a more positive running. A key prediction is a hemispherical asymmetry of the spectral index and of its running. Measurement of these asymmetries c…
We explore here a new mechanism by which the out of equilibrium decay of heavy gravitinos, followed by possible R-parity violating decays in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) can generate the baryon asymmetry of the universe. In this mechanism, gravitino decay produces a CP-asymmetry that is carried by squarks or sleptons. These particles then decay through R-parity violating operators generating a lepton asymmetry. The lepton asymmetry is converted into a baryon asymmetry by weak sphalerons, as in the familiar case of leptogenesis by Majorana neutrino decays. To ensure that the…
Erickcek, Kamionkowski and Carroll proposed in 2008 that the dipole modulation of the CMB could be due to a very large scale perturbation of the field $ϕ$ causing the primordial curvature perturbation. We repeat their calculation using weaker assumptions and the current data. If $ϕ$ is the inflaton of {\em any} single-field inflation with the attractor behaviour, the asymmetry is almosy certainly too small. If instead $ϕ$ is {\em any} curvaton-type field (ie.\ one with the canonical kinetic term and a negligible effect during inflation) the asymmetry can agree with observation if $|\fnl|$ in t…
