Next generation surveys will observe the large-scale structure of the Universe with unprecedented accuracy. This will enable us to test the relationships between matter over-densities, the curvature perturbation and the Newtonian potential. Any large-distance modification of gravity or exotic nature of dark energy modifies these relationships as compared to those predicted in the standard smooth dark energy model based on General Relativity. In linear theory of structure growth such modifications are often parameterised by virtue of two functions of space and time that enter the relation of the curvature perturbation to, first, the matter over-density, and second, the Newtonian potential. We investigate the predictions for these functions in Brans-Dicke theory, clustering dark energy models and interacting dark energy models. We find that each theory has a distinct path in the parameter space of modified growth. Understanding these theoretical priors on the parameterisations of modified growth is essential to reveal the nature of cosmic acceleration with the help of upcoming observations of structure formations.
We embed linear and nonlinear parametrisations of beyond standard cosmological physics in the halo model reaction framework, providing a model-independent prescription for the nonlinear matter power spectrum. As an application, we focus on Horndeski theories, using the Effective Field Theory of Dark Energy (EFTofDE) to parameterise linear and quasi-nonlinear perturbations. In the nonlinear regime we investigate both a nonlinear parameterised-post Friedmannian (nPPF) approach as well as a physically motivated and approximate phenomenological model based on the error function (Erf). We compare t…

Searches for modified gravity in the large-scale structure try to detect the enhanced amplitude of density fluctuations caused by the fifth force present in many of these theories. Neutrinos, on the other hand, suppress structure growth below their free-streaming length. Both effects take place on comparable scales, and uncertainty in the neutrino mass leads to a degeneracy with modified gravity parameters for probes that are measuring the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. We explore the possibility to break the degeneracy between modified gravity and neutrino effects in the growth of st…
We use growth of structure data to constrain the effective field theory of dark energy. Considering as case study Horndeski theories with the speed of gravitational waves equal to that of light, we show how constraints on the free parameters and the large-scale structure phenomenological functions can be improved by two ingredients: firstly by complementing the set of redshift-space distortions data with the three recent measurements of the growth rate $f$ and the amplitude of matter fluctuations $σ_8$ from the VIPERS and SDSS collaborations; secondly by applying a local Solar System bound on …
In the context of modified gravity, at linear level, the growth of structure in the Universe will be affected by modifications to the Poisson equation and by the background expansion rate of the Universe. It has been shown that these two effects lead to a degeneracy which must be properly accounted for if one is to place reliable constraints on new forces on large scales or, equivalently, modifications to General Relativity. In this paper we show that current constraints are such that assumptions about the background expansion have little impact on constraints on modifications to gravity. We d…
It has been shown by \textit{Scherrer and Putter et.al} that, when dynamics of dark energy is driven by a homogeneous $k-$essence scalar field $ϕ$, with a Lagrangian of the form $L = V_0F(X)$ with a constant potential $V_0$ and $X = \frac{1}{2}\nabla^μϕ\nabla_μϕ= \frac{1}{2}\dotϕ^2$, one obtains a scaling relation $X(dF/dX)^2 = Ca^{-6}$ , where $C$ is a constant and $a$ is the FRW scale factor of the universe. The separate energy conservation in the dark energy sector and the constancy of $k-$essence potential are instrumental in obtaining such a scaling. In this paper, we have shown that even…
We present a methodology for constructing modified gravity (MG) constrained simulations of the local Universe using positions and peculiar velocities from the CosmicFlows data set. Our analysis focuses on the following MG models: the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) model and Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model. We develop a model independent methodology for constructing constrained simulations with any given power spectra and numerically calculated linear growth functions. Initial conditions (ICs) for a set of constrained simulations are constructed for the standard cosmological model …
We systematically assess several limiting cases of modified gravity, where particular theoretical or observational conditions hold. This framework includes the well known scalar-tensor gravity and No Slip Gravity and No Run Gravity, and we extend it to three new limits: Only Run, Only Light, and Only Growth Gravities. These limits give simplifications that allow deeper understanding of modified gravity, including demonstration that gravitational effects on light and matter can have opposite signs in their deviation from general relativity. We also show observational predictions for the differe…
We investigate the formation of the large scale structures in the present accelerated era in $f(R)$ gravity background. This is done by considering the linear growth of matter perturbations at low redshift $z<1$. The effect of $f(R)$ alters the behaviour of the matter density perturbations from the matter dominated universe to the late-time accelerated universe which is encoded in the Newtonian gravitational constant as $G\rightarrow G_{eff}$. The modified gravitational constant ($G_{eff}$) depends on the form of $f(R)$. The late-time accelerated expansion affects the formation of large scale …
We present a method to introduce relativistic corrections including linear dark energy perturbations in Horndeski theory into Newtonian simulations based on the N-body gauge approach. We assume that standard matter species (cold dark matter, baryons, photons and neutrinos) are only gravitationally-coupled with the scalar field and we then use the fact that one can include modified gravity effects as an effective dark energy fluid in the total energy-momentum tensor. In order to compute the scalar field perturbations, as well as the cosmological background and metric perturbations, we use the E…
There is a well known degeneracy between the enhancement of the growth of large-scale structure produced by modified gravity models and the suppression due to the free-streaming of massive neutrinos at late times. This makes the matter power-spectrum alone a poor probe to distinguish between modified gravity and the concordance $Λ$CDM model when neutrino masses are not strongly constrained. In this work, we investigate the potential of using redshift-space distortions (RSD) to break this degeneracy when the modification to gravity is scale-dependent in the form of Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$. We find th…
