Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [-5, +1) s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test, we find no evidence for an excess of weak gravitational-wave signals in our sample of GRBs. We exclude neutron star-black hole progenitors to a median 90% CL exclusion distance of 6.7 Mpc.
Searches for inspiral gravitational waves associated with short gamma-ray bursts in LIGO's fifth and Virgo's first science run
Observations by LIGO--Virgo of binary black hole mergers suggest a possible anti-correlation between black hole mass ratio ($q=m_{2}/m_{1}$) and the effective inspiral spin parameter $χ_{\rm eff}$, the mass-weighted spin projection onto the binary orbital angular momentum (Callister et al. 2021). We show that such an anti-correlation can naturally occur for binary black holes assembled in active galactic nuclei (AGN) due to spherical and planar symmetry-breaking effects. We describe a phenomenological model in which: 1) heavier black holes live in the AGN disk and tend to spin up into alignmen…
The dozens of compact object mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo raise a key theoretical question: how do initially wide binaries shrink sufficiently quickly that they are able to merge via gravitational wave (GW) radiation within a Hubble time? One promising class of answers involves secular driving of binary eccentricity by some external tidal perturbation. This perturbation can arise due to the presence of a tertiary point mass, in which case the system exhibits Lidov-Kozai (LK) dynamics, or it can stem from the tidal field of the stellar cluster in which the binary orbits. While these secular t…
In a recent paper, we determined the measurement accuracy of physical parameters for eccentric, precessing, non-spinning, inspiraling, stellar-mass black hole - black hole (BH-BH) binaries for the upcoming second-generation LIGO/VIRGO/KAGRA detector network at design sensitivity using the Fisher matrix method. Here we extend that study to a wide range of binary masses including neutron star - neutron star (NS-NS), NS-BH, and BH-BH binaries with BH masses up to $110 \, M_{\odot}$. The measurement error of eccentricity $e_{10 \,\rm Hz}$ at a gravitational-wave (GW) frequency of $10 \, {\rm Hz}$ …
Results of an all-sky high-frequency Einstein@Home search for continuous gravitational waves in LIGO's fifth science run
External Attention Transformer: A Robust AI Model for Identifying Initial Eccentricity Signatures in Binary Black Hole Events in Simulated Advanced LIGO Data
The common envelope phase is a likely formation channel for close binary systems containing compact objects. Neutron stars in common envelopes accrete at a fraction of the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion rate, since the stellar envelope is inhomogeneous, but may still be able to accrete at hyper-critical rates (though not enough to become black holes). We show that common envelope systems consisting of a neutron star with a massive primary may be gravitational wave sources detectable in the Advanced LIGO band as far away as the Magellanic Clouds. To characterize their evolution, we perform orb…
When binary black holes form in the field, it is expected that their orbits typically circularize before coalescence. In galactic nuclei and globular clusters, binary black holes can form dynamically. Recent results suggest that $\approx5\%$ of mergers in globular clusters result from three-body interactions. These three-body interactions are expected to induce significant orbital eccentricity $\gtrsim 0.1$ when they enter the Advanced LIGO band at a gravitational-wave frequency of 10 Hz. Measurements of binary black hole eccentricity therefore provide a means for determining whether or not dy…
The detection of a gravitational capture of a stellar-mass compact object by a massive black hole (MBH) will allow us to test gravity in the strong regime. These sources form via two-body relaxation, by exchanging energy and angular momentum, and inspiral in a slow, progressive way down to the final merger. The range of frequencies is localised in the range of millihertz in the case of MBH of masses $\sim 10^6\,M_{\odot}$, i.e. that of space-borne gravitational-wave observatories such as LISA. In this article I show that, depending on their orbital parameters, intermediate-mass ratios (IMRIs) …
We study whether binary black hole template banks can be used to search for the gravitational waves emitted by general binary coalescences. To recover binary signals from noisy data, matched-filtering techniques are typically required. This is especially true for low-mass systems, with total mass $M \lesssim 10 \, M_\odot$, which can inspiral in the LIGO and Virgo frequency bands for thousands of cycles. In this paper, we focus on the detectability of low-mass binary systems whose individual components can have large spin-induced quadrupole moments and small compactness. The quadrupole contrib…
Thanks to recent measurements of tidal deformability and radius, the nuclear equation of state and structure of neutron stars are now better understood. Here, we show that through resonant tidal excitations in a binary inspiral, the neutron crust generically undergoes elastic-to-plastic transition, which leads to crust heating and eventually meltdown. This process could induce $\sim \mathcal{O}(0.1)$ phase shift in the gravitational waveform. Detecting the timing and induced phase shift of this crust meltdown will shed light on the crust structure, such as the core-crust transition density, wh…
Neutron star (NS) binaries formed dynamically may have significant eccentricities while emitting gravitational waves (GWs) in the LIGO/VIRGO band. We study tidal effects in such eccentric inspiralling NS binaries using a set of hybrid equations. The NS is modelled as a compressible ellipsoid, which can deform nonlinearly due to tidal forces, while the orbit evolution is treated with the post-Newtonian (PN) theory up to 2.5-PN order. We find that in general, the tidal interaction can accelerate the inspiral, and cause orbital frequency and phase shifts. For circular inspirals, our calculations …
We present three-dimensional local hydrodynamic simulations of flows around objects embedded within stellar envelopes using a "wind tunnel" formalism. Our simulations model the common envelope dynamical inspiral phase in binary star systems in terms of dimensionless flow characteristics. We present suites of simulations that study the effects of varying the binary mass ratio, stellar structure, equation of state, relative Mach number of the object's motion through the gas, and density gradients across the gravitational focusing scale. For each model, we measure coefficients of accretion and dr…
A compact object with a mass $\mathcal{O}(1 \sim 1000) M_{\odot}$, such as a black hole of stellar or primordial origin or a neutron star, and a much lighter exotic compact object with a subsolar mass could form a non-standard mini extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) and emit gravitational waves within the frequency band of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. These systems are extremely interesting because detecting them would definitively point to new physics. We study the capability of using LIGO/Virgo to search for mini-EMRIs and find that a large class of exotic compact objects can b…
Primordial black holes of planetary masses captured by compact stars are widely studied to constrain their composition fraction of dark matter. Such a capture may lead to an inspiral process and be detected through gravitational wave signals. In this Letter, we study the post-capture inspiral process by considering two different kinds of compact stars, i.e., strange stars and neutron stars. The dynamical equations are numerically solved and the gravitational wave emission is calculated. It is found that the Advanced LIGO can detect the inspiraling of a $10^{-5}$ solar mass primordial black hol…
The observation of the inspiral and merger of compact binaries by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration ushered in a new era in the study of strong-field gravity. We review current and future tests of strong gravity and of the Kerr paradigm with gravitational-wave interferometers, both within a theory-agnostic framework (the parametrized post-Einsteinian formalism) and in the context of specific modified theories of gravity (scalar-tensor, Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet, dynamical Chern-Simons, Lorentz-violating, and extra dimensional theories). In this contribution we focus on (i) the information carri…
The early inspiral of massive stellar-mass black-hole binaries merging in LIGO's sensitivity band will be detectable at low frequencies by the upcoming space mission LISA. LISA will predict, with years of forewarning, the time and frequency with which binaries will be observed by LIGO. We will, therefore, find ourselves in the position of knowing that a binary is about to merge, with the unprecedented opportunity to optimize ground-based operations to increase their scientific payoff. We apply this idea to detections of multiple ringdown modes, or black-hole spectroscopy. Narrowband tunings ca…
Now that LIGO has revealed the existence of a large number of binary black holes, identifying their origin becomes an important challenge. They might originate in more isolated regions of the galaxy or alternatively they might reside in dense environments such as galactic centers or globular clusters. In the latter case, their center of mass motion as well as their orbital parameters should lead to observable changes in the waveforms, which would reflect their gravitational interactions with the surrounding matter. This would be reflected in the gravitational wave signal by a net phase change …
Gravitational waves from extreme gravity events such as the coalescence of two black holes in a binary system fill our observable universe, bearing with them the underlying theory of gravity driving their process. One compelling alternative theory of gravity -- known as Einstein-dilaton Gauss-Bonnet gravity motivated by string theory -- describes the presence of an additional dilaton scalar field coupled directly to higher orders of the curvature, effectively describing a "fifth force" interaction and the emission of scalar dipole radiation between two scalarized black holes. Most previous stu…
The Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors opened a new era to study black holes (BHs) in our Universe. A population of stellar-mass binary BHs (BBHs) are discovered to be heavier than previously expected. These heavy BBHs provide us an opportunity to achieve multiband observation with ground-based and space-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. In this work, we use BBHs discovered by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration as indubitable examples, and study in great detail the prospects for multiband observation with GW detectors in the near future. We apply the Fisher matrix to spinning, non-precessing i…
Spherical harmonic modes of gravitational waveforms for inspiraling compact binaries in eccentric orbits from post-Newtonian (PN) theory accurate to third post-Newtonian order, and those extracted from numerical relativity (NR) simulations for binary black holes (BBHs) are compared. We combine results from the two approaches (PN and NR) to construct time-domain hybrid waveforms that describe the complete evolution of BBH mergers through inspiral-merger-ringdown (IMR) stages. These hybrids are then used in constructing a fully analytical dominant mode ($\ell$=2, $|m|$=2) eccentric IMR model. A …
Using the effective field theory framework for extended objects we describe the evolution of spinning compact objects in the late inspiral of the coalescence of a binary, before the plunge and merger, by including leading order corrections due to spin, tides, dissipation and gravitational wave radiation. Our implementation is of particular relevance for probing the stellar structure of compact objects with gravitational wave observations. A spinning compact object in the effective field theory framework is described as a spinning point particle, with its finite size effects encoded in higher o…
