We re-visit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing inter-chain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling J_\perp and diagonal coupling J_\times. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal inter-chain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line J_\perp = 2J_\times. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing inter-chain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic J_\perp and J_\times is determined.
In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 156603 (2002); cond-mat/0201300], Alvarez and Gros have numerically analyzed the Drude weight for thermal transport in spin ladders and frustrated chains of up to 14 sites and have proposed that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. In this comment, we argue that this conclusion cannot be sustained if the finite-size analysis is taken to larger system sizes.
We study, at T=0, the anomalies in the magnetization curve of the S=1 two-leg ladder with frustrated interactions. We focus mainly on the existence of the $M=\Ms/2$ plateau, where $\Ms$ is the saturation magnetization. We use analytical methods (degenerate perturbation theory and non-Abelian bosonization) as well as numerical methods (level spectroscopy and density matrix renormalization group), which lead to the consistent conclusion with each other. We also touch on the $M=\Ms/4$ and $M=(3/4)\Ms$ plateaux and cusps.
A two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with diagonal interactions is investigated numerically. We focus our attention on the possibility of columnar dimer phase, which was recently predicted based on a reformulated bosonization theory. By using density matrix renormalization group technique and exact diagonalization method, we calculate columnar dimer order parameter, spin correlation on a rung, string order parameters, and scaled excitation gaps. Carefully using various finite-size scaling techniques, our results show no support for the existence of columnar dimer phase in the spin ladder under considerat…
Low temperature properties of the spin-1/2 frustrated ladder with ferromagnetic rungs and legs, and two different antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interaction are investigated using the modified spin wave approximation in the region with ferromagnetic ground state. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic structure factors is calculated. The results are consistent with the numerical exact diagonalization results in the intermediate temperature range. Below this temperature range, the finite size effect is significant in the numerical diagonalization results…
We study hardcore bosons on a triangular ladder at half filling in the presence of a frustrating hopping term and a competing nearest neighbor repulsion $V$ which promotes crystallization. Using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method, we obtain the phase diagram which contains three phases: a uniform superfluid (SF), an insulating charge density wave (CDW) crystal and a bond ordered insulator (BO). We find that the transitions from SF to CDW and SF to BO are continuous in nature, with critical exponents varying continously along the phase boundaries, while the transition f…
Developing a theoretical framework to access quantum phases of itinerant bosons or fermions in two dimensions (2D) that exhibit singular structure along surfaces in momentum space but have no quasi-particle description remains as a central challenge in the field of strongly correlated physics. In this paper we propose that distinctive signatures of such 2D strongly correlated phases will be manifest in quasi-one-dimensional "N-leg ladder" systems. Characteristic of each parent 2D quantum liquid would be a precise pattern of 1D gapless modes on the N-leg ladder. These signatures could be potent…
The entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial Heisenberg dimers in the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-XXZ double sawtooth ladder is investigated at low temperature. Here, we consider a cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block, and investigate the effects of this amazing interaction on the bipartite entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial dimers. Interestingly, we observe a remarkable difference in concurrence behavior with respect to the cyclic four-spin exchange interaction and magnetic field. Also, the critical points at which the concurrence vanishes are changed…
The mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder containing mixture of both spin-1 and spin-1/2 nodal atoms, and the spin-1/2 interstitial dimers is approximately solved by the transfer-matrix method. Here, we study in detail the ground-state phase diagrams, also influences of the bilinear exchange coupling on the rungs and cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block on the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the suggested ladder at low temperature. Such a double sawtooth ladder may be found in a Shastry-Sutherland Lattice-type. In spite of od…
We consider low-energy excitation structures of N-leg integer-spin ladder and tube systems with an antiferromagnetic (AF) intrachain coupling and a uniform external field. The tube means the ladder with the periodic boundary condition along the interchain (rung) direction. Odd-leg AF-rung tubes have the frustration. In order to analyze all systems including frustrated tubes, we apply a field-theoretical method based on the nonlinear sigma model. We mainly focus on the systems without any external fields. In this case, it is shown that the lowest bands of frustrated tubes always consist of six-…
We show how to realize a ``protected'' qubit by using a fully frustrated Josephson Junction ladder (JJL) with Mobius boundary conditions. Such a system has been recently studied within a twisted conformal field theory (CFT) approach (Mod. Phys. Lett. A 15 (2000) 1679; Nucl. Phys. B 641 (2002) 547) and shown to develop the phenomenon of flux fractionalization (Eur. Phys. J. B 49 (2006) 83). The relevance of a ``closed'' geometry has been fully exploited in relating the topological properties of the ground state of the system to the presence of half flux quanta and the emergence of a topological…
The role of nonstoquasticity in the field of quantum annealing and adiabatic quantum computing is an actively debated topic. We study a strongly-frustrated quasi-one-dimensional quantum Ising model on a two-leg ladder to elucidate how a first-order phase transition with a topological origin is affected by interactions of the $\pm XX$-type. Such interactions are sometimes known as stoquastic (negative sign) and nonstoquastic (positive sign) "catalysts". Carrying out a symmetry-preserving real-space renormalization group analysis and extensive density-matrix renormalization group computations, w…
We investigate the ground state phase diagram of the S=1/2 two-leg $XXZ$ spin ladder system with an isotropic interchain coupling. In this model, there is the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition which occurs at the XY-Haldane and the XY-rung singlet phase boundaries. It was difficult to determine the transition line using traditional methods. We overcome this difficulty using the level spectroscopy method combined with the twisted boundary condition method, and we check the consistency. We find out that the phase boundary between XY phase and Haldane phase lies on the $Δ=0$ line. And we…
In this publication I discuss the phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg model suggested in A. A. Nersesyan and A. M. Tsvelik, Phys. Rev. B{\bf 67}, 024422 (2003). The phase diagram contains $(π,0)$ and $(π,π)$ antiferromagnetic phases separated by the Valence Bond Crystal (VBC) state. I argue that the point of the phase diagram with deconfined spinons, predicted in the aforementioned work, is situated in the middle of VBC state, at the point where the dimerization order parameter changes sign.
Motivated by experiments on Josephson junction arrays in a magnetic field and ultracold interacting atoms in an optical lattice in the presence of synthetic orbital magnetic fields, we study the "fully frustrated" Bose-Hubbard model and quantum XY model with half a flux quantum per lattice plaquette. Using Monte Carlo simulations and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that the phase diagram of such kinetically frustrated bosons displays three phases on a two-leg ladder: a weakly interacting chiral superfluid phase with staggered loop currents which spontaneously br…
We study a bosonic ladder with two coupled chains using the finite size density matrix renormalisation group method. We show that in a commensurate bosonic ladder the critical on-site interaction ($U_C$) for the superfluid to Mott insulator transition becomes larger as the inter-chain hopping ($t_\bot$)increases. We analyze this quantum phase transition and obtain the phase diagram in the $t_\bot -U$ plane.
Ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices is examined using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is devoted to the comparison of the ground-state properties of the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model and its semi-classical Ising analogue.
Magnetic phase diagram of a spatially anisotropic, frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a stacked square lattice is investigated using second-order spin-wave expansion. The effects of interlayer coupling and the spatial anisotropy on the magnetic ordering of two ordered ground states are explicitly studied. It is shown that with increase in next nearest neighbor frustration the second-order corrections play a significant role in stabilizing the magnetization. We obtain two ordered magnetic phases (Neel and stripe) separated by a paramagnetic disordered phase. Within second-order s…
We investigate the phase diagram of hard-core bosons in two-leg ladders in the presence of soft-shoulder potentials. We show how the competition between local and non-local terms gives rise to a phase diagram with liquid phases with dominant cluster, spin-, and density-wave quasi-long-range ordering. These phases are separated by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless, Gaussian, and supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum critical transitions. For the latter, we provide a phenomenological description of coupled SUSY conformal field theories, whose predictions are confirmed by matrix-product state simulations. …
It is shown that the phase diagram of the two-dimensional generalized fully-frustrated XY model on a square lattice contains a crossing of the chirality transition and the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition, as well as a stable phase characterized by a finite helicity modulus $Υ$ and an unbroken chirality symmetry. The crossing point itself is consistent with a critical point without any jump in $Υ$, with the size ($L$) scaling $% Υ\sim L^{-0.63}$ and the critical index $ν\approx0.77$. The KT transition line remains continuous beyond the crossing but eventually turns into a first-order line. …
