We offer a method of correlations mapping on the full celestial sphere that allows to check the quality of reconstructed maps, their non-Gaussianity and conduct experiments in various frequency ranges. The method was evaluated on the WMAP data, both on the reconstructed maps and foreground components, and on the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data. We detected a significant shift in the correlation data of the dust component, which can be preconditioned by a more complex dust model than the one currently in use for component separation. While studying the NVSS correlation data, we demonstrated that the statistics of the coinciding spots in the microwave background and in the NVSS survey corresponds to the one expected in the $Λ$CDM model. This can testify for a chance coincidence of the spots in the NVSS and WMAP data in the CMB Cold Spot region. Our method is software-implemented in the GLESP package.
In this paper we address the challenge of extracting maps of spatially varying unknown additive biases from cosmic shear data. This is done by exploiting the isotropy of the cosmic shear field, and the anisotropy of a typical additive bias field, using an autocorrelation discrepancy map; which identifies significant non-Gaussian components of the map. We test this approach using simulations and find that the autocorrelation discrepancy map produces spatially varying features that are indicative of the additive bias field both in amplitude and spatial variation. We then apply this to the Dark E…
We investigate the prospects of measuring the cosmic magnification effect by cross-correlating neutral hydrogen intensity mapping (HI IM) maps with background optical galaxies. We forecast the signal-to-noise ratio for HI IM data from SKA1-MID and HIRAX, combined with LSST photometric galaxy samples. We find that, thanks to their different resolutions, SKA1-MID and HIRAX are highly complementary in such an analysis. We predict that SKA1-MID can achieve a detection with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim 15$ on a multipole range of $\ell \lesssim 200$, while HIRAX can reach a signal-to-noise rati…

Dark matter halos represent the highest density peaks in the matter distribution. Conversely, cosmic voids are under-dense patches of the universe. Probing the mass distribution of the universe requires various approaches, including weak gravitational lensing that subtly modifies the shape of distant sources, and Doppler lensing that changes the apparent size and magnitude of objects due to peculiar velocities. In this work, we adopt both gravitational and Doppler lensing effects to study the underlying matter distribution in and around cosmic voids/halos. We use the relativistic $N$-body code…
Gravitational lensing deflects the paths of cosmic infrared background (CIB) photons, leaving a measurable imprint on CIB maps. The resulting statistical anisotropy can be used to reconstruct the matter distribution out to the redshifts of CIB sources. To this end, we generalize the CMB lensing quadratic estimator to any weakly non-Gaussian source field, by deriving the optimal lensing weights. We point out the additional noise and bias caused by the non-Gaussianity and the `self-lensing' of the source field. We propose methods to reduce, subtract or model these non-Gaussianities. We show that…
This paper outlines the science case for line-intensity mapping with a space-borne instrument targeting the sub-millimeter (microwaves) to the far-infrared (FIR) wavelength range. Our goal is to observe and characterize the large-scale structure in the Universe from present times to the high redshift Epoch of Reionization. This is essential to constrain the cosmology of our Universe and form a better understanding of various mechanisms that drive galaxy formation and evolution. We argue that the proposed frequency range would make it possible to probe important metal cooling lines such as [CII…
We investigate the feasibility of measuring the effects of peculiar velocities in large-scale structure using the dipole of the redshift-space cross-correlation function. We combine number counts of galaxies with brightness-temperature fluctuations from 21cm intensity mapping, demonstrating that the dipole may be measured at modest significance ($\lesssim 2σ$) by combining the upcoming radio survey CHIME with the future redshift surveys of DESI and Euclid. More significant measurements ($\lesssim~10σ$) will be possible by combining intensity maps from the SKA with these of DESI or Euclid, and …
Cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are among the least explored observational eras in cosmology: a time at which the first galaxies and supermassive black holes formed and reionized the cold, neutral Universe of the post-recombination era. With current instruments, only a handful of the brightest galaxies and quasars from that time are detectable as individual objects, due to their extreme distances. Fortunately, a multitude of multi-wavelength intensity mapping measurements, ranging from the redshifted 21 cm background in the radio to the unresolved X-ray background, contain a pl…
Next-generation tests of fundamental physics and cosmology using large scale structure require measurements over large volumes of the Universe, including high redshifts inaccessible to present-day surveys. Line intensity mapping, an emerging technique that detects the integrated emission of atomic and molecular lines without resolving sources, can efficiently map cosmic structure over a wide range of redshifts. Observations at millimeter wavelengths detect far-IR emission lines such as CO/[CII], and take advantage of observational and analysis techniques developed by CMB experiments. These mea…
Intensity mapping has been attracting increasing interest as a way to study galaxy evolution and the large scale structure of the Universe. Instead of detecting individual galaxies, we measure the integrated emission from a volume of the universe. Contrary to galaxy surveys, it includes light from the faintest objects in the cosmic web. We will start this overview by introducing line intensity mapping and review its current observational status. We will enumerate the most prominent emission lines for intensity mapping and discuss how to model their observed signal. The prospects of using this …

Recent studies using New Horizons LORRI images have returned the most precise measurement of the cosmic optical background to date, yielding a flux that exceeds that expected from deep galaxy counts by roughly a factor of two. We investigate whether this excess, detected at $\sim 4σ$ significance, is due to axion-like dark matter that decays to monoenergetic photons. We compute the spectral energy distribution from such decays and the contribution to the flux measured by LORRI. Assuming that axion-like particles make up all of the dark matter, the parameter space unconstrained to date that exp…
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments that constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ are now approaching the sensitivity at which delensing---removing the $B$ modes induced by the gravitational lensing of large-scale structure---is necessary. We consider the improvement in delensing that maps of large-scale structure from tomographic line intensity mapping (IM) experiments targeting $2 < z < 10$ could provide. Compared to a nominal baseline of cosmic infrared background and internal delensing at CMB-S4 sensitivity, we find that the addition of high-redshift IM data could improve delensi…
The Cosmic Dawn and Reionization epochs remain a fundamental but challenging frontier of astrophysics and cosmology. We advocate a large-scale, multi-tracer approach to develop a comprehensive understanding of the physics that led to the formation and evolution of the first stars and galaxies. We highlight the line intensity mapping technique to trace the multi-phase reionization topology on large scales, and measure reionization history in detail. Besides 21cm, we advocate for Lya tomography mapping during the epoch of Wouthuysen-Field coupling as an additional probe of the cosmic dawn era.
We study the possibility to use line-intensity mapping (LIM) to seek photons from the radiative decay of neutrinos in the cosmic neutrino background. The Standard Model prediction for the rate for these decays is extremely small, but it can be enhanced if new physics increases the neutrino electromagnetic moments. The decay photons will appear as an interloper of astrophysical spectral lines. We propose that the neutrino-decay line can be identified with anisotropies in LIM clustering and also with the voxel intensity distribution. Ongoing and future LIM experiments will have -- depending on t…
Current and future generations of intensity mapping surveys promise dramatic improvements in our understanding of galaxy evolution and large-scale structure. An intensity map provides a census of the cumulative emission from all galaxies in a given region and redshift, including faint objects that are undetectable individually. Furthermore, cross-correlations between line intensity maps and galaxy redshift surveys are sensitive to the line intensity and clustering bias without the limitation of cosmic variance. Using the Fisher information matrix, we derive simple expressions describing sensit…
We use full sky simulations, including the effects of foreground contamination and removal, to explore multi-tracer synergies between a SKA-like 21cm intensity mapping survey and a LSST-like photometric galaxy redshift survey. In particular we study ratios of auto and cross-correlations between the two tracers as estimators of the ratio of their biases, a quantity that should benefit considerably from the cosmic variance cancellation of the multi-tracer approach. We show how well we should be able to measure the bias ratio on very large scales (down to $\ell \sim 3$), which is crucial to measu…
Line Intensity Mapping Prediction from the Cosmic Dawn (CoDa) III Simulation for H$α$ from Galaxies and the Intergalactic Medium during the Epoch of Reionization
We investigate the appropriateness of the use of different Lagrangians to describe various components of the cosmic energy budget, discussing the degeneracies between them in the absence of nonminimal couplings to gravity or other fields, and clarifying some misconceptions in the literature. We further demonstrate that these degeneracies are generally broken for nonminimal coupled fluids, in which case the identification of the appropriate on-shell Lagrangian may become essential in order characterize the overall dynamics. We then show that models with the same on-shell Lagrangian may have dif…
Maps of cosmic structure produced by galaxy surveys are one of the key tools for answering fundamental questions about the Universe. Accurate theoretical predictions for these quantities are needed to maximize the scientific return of these programs. Simulating the Universe by including gravity and hydrodynamics is one of the most powerful techniques to accomplish this; unfortunately, these simulations are very expensive computationally. Alternatively, gravity-only simulations are cheaper, but do not predict the locations and properties of galaxies in the cosmic web. In this work, we use convo…
The Millimeter-wave Intensity Mapping Experiment (mmIME) recently reported a detection of excess spatial fluctuations at a wavelength of 3 mm, which can be attributed to unresolved emission of several CO rotational transitions between $z\sim1-5$. We study the implications of this data for the high-redshift interstellar medium using a suite of state-of-the-art semianalytic simulations which have successfully reproduced many other sub-millimeter line observations across the relevant redshift range. We find that the semianalytic predictions are mildly in tension with the mmIME result, with a pred…

We investigate the possible presence of neutral hydrogen (HI) in intergalactic filaments at very low redshift ($z\sim 0.08$), by stacking a set of 274,712 2dFGRS galaxy pairs over 21-cm maps obtained with dedicated observations conducted with the Parkes radio telescope, over a total sky area of approximately 1,300 square degrees covering two patches in the northern and in the southern Galactic hemispheres. The stacking is performed by combining local maps in which each pair is brought to a common reference frame; the resulting signal from the edge galaxies is then removed to extract the filame…
The dispersion measures (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) encode the integrated electron density along the line-of-sight, which is typically dominated by the intergalactic medium (IGM) contribution in the case of extragalactic FRBs. In this paper, we show that incorporating wide-field spectroscopic galaxy survey data in the foreground of localized FRBs can significantly improve constraints on the partition of diffuse cosmic baryons. Using mock DMs and realistic lightcone galaxy catalogs derived from the Millennium simulation, we define spectroscopic surveys that can be carried out with 4m and 8…
Cosmological weak lensing has been a highly successful and rapidly developing research field since the first detection of cosmic shear in 2000. However, it has recently been pointed out in Yoo et al. that the standard weak lensing formalism yields gauge-dependent results and, hence, does not meet the level of accuracy demanded by the next generation of weak lensing surveys. Here, we show that the Jacobi mapping formalism provides a solid alternative to the standard formalism, as it accurately describes all the relativistic effects contributing to the weak lensing observables. We calculate gaug…
In modern cosmology, an important task is investigating whether there exists a signal of modified gravity in the universe. Due to the limited resolutions and sensitivities of facilities, current observations can not detect any signal of modified gravity. As a consequence, it is urgent to predict the constraining power of future cosmological surveys on modified gravity. We constrain the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity with eight future mainstream probes encompassing 21 cm intensity mapping, HI galaxy, cosmic microwave background, optical galaxy, weak lensing, galaxy clustering, type Ia supernovae and…
The power spectrum and the voxel intensity distribution (VID) are two of the main proposed summary statistics to study line-intensity maps. We reformulate the derivation of the VID in terms of the local overdensities and derive for the first time an analytic covariance between the VID and the line-intensity mapping power spectrum. We study the features of this covariance for different experimental setups and show that we can recover similar results to simulation-based covariances. With this formalism, we also compute the cosmic variance contribution the VID uncertainty, which we find to be sub…
We present the second data release of the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Tomography Observations (CLAMATO) Survey conducted with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck-I telescope. This project used Lyman-alpha forest absorption in the spectra of faint star forming galaxies and quasars at z ~ 2-3 to trace neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. In particular, we use 320 objects over a footprint of ~0.2 deg^2 to reconstruct the absorption field at 2.05 < z < 2.55 at ~2 h^{-1}Mpc resolution. We apply a Wiener filtering technique to the observed data to reconstruct three dimensional maps of the …
21 cm intensity mapping has emerged as a promising technique to map the large-scale structure of the Universe, at redshifts $z$ from 1 to 10. Unfortunately, many of the key cross-correlations with the cosmic microwave background and photo-$z$ galaxies have been thought to be impossible due to the foreground contamination for radial modes with small wave numbers. In this paper, we apply tidal reconstruction to the simulated 21 cm fields and recover the lost large-scale radial modes successfully. We estimate the detectability of the cross-correlation signals and find they can be detected at high…
We introduce the Galaxy Intensity Mapping cross-COrrelation estimator (GIMCO), which is a new tomographic estimator for the gravitational lensing potential, based on a combination of intensity mapping (IM) and galaxy number counts. The estimator can be written schematically as IM$(z_f)\times$galaxy$(z_b)$ $-$ galaxy$(z_f)\times$IM$(z_b)$ for a pair of distinct redshifts $(z_f,z_b)$; this combination allows to greatly reduce the contamination by density-density correlations, thus isolating the lensing signal. As an estimator constructed only from cross-correlations, it is additionally less susc…
We discuss the possibility of studying diffuse baryon distributions with kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations with density fluctuations from 21\,cm intensity mapping (IM). The biggest challenge for the cross-correlation is the loss of large-scale information in IM, due to foregrounds and the zero spacing problem of interferometers. We apply the tidal reconstruction algorithm to restore the lost large-scale modes, which increases the correlation by more than a factor of three. With the predicted foreground level, we …
The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method are widely used for foreground subtraction in 21 cm intensity mapping experiments. We show their equivalence, and point out that the condition for completely clean separation of foregrounds and cosmic 21 cm signal using the PCA/SVD is unrealistic. We propose a PCA-based foreground subtraction method, dubbed "Singular Vector Projection (SVP)" method, which exploits a priori information of the left and/or right singular vectors of the foregrounds. We demonstrate with simulation tests that this new, se…

We present a Bayesian hierarchical forward model for mapping the local luminosity-density field from heterogeneous redshift surveys. By dividing the survey volume into angular cells and redshift shells, we model the observed galaxy distribution directly in apparent-magnitude and redshift space. This allows us to infer cell-level luminosity functions and densities while preserving each survey's unique selection function. Simultaneously, the ensemble of cells constrains the cosmic-mean luminosity function, its redshift evolution, and the hyperparameters describing cell-to-cell variation. We appl…
The assumption of homogeneity and isotropy on large scales is one of the main hypotheses of the standard cosmological model. In this paper, we revisit a test of cosmological isotropy using type Ia supernova (SN Ia) distances provided by the latest SN Ia compilation available, namely, the Pantheon compilation. We perform a model-independent analysis by selecting low-redshift subsamples lying in two redshift intervals, i.e., z $\leq$ 0.10 and z $\leq$ 0.20. By mapping the directional asymmetry of cosmological parameters across the sky, we show that the current SN Ia data favor the hypothesis of …
The gravitational coupling of a long-wavelength tidal field with small-scale density fluctuations leads to anisotropic distortions of the locally measured small-scale matter correlation function. Since the local correlation function is known to be statistically isotropic in the absence of such tidal interactions, the tidal distortions can be used to reconstruct the long-wavelength tidal field and large-scale density field in analogy with the cosmic microwave background lensing reconstruction. In this paper we present the theoretical framework of cosmic tidal reconstruction and test the reconst…
