We study transport properties of anisotropic Heisenberg model in a disordered magnetic field experiencing dephasing due to external degrees of freedom. In the absence of dephasing the model can display, depending on parameter values, the whole range of possible transport regimes: ideal ballistic conduction, diffusive, or ideal insulating behavior. We show that the presence of dephasing induces normal diffusive transport in a wide range of parameters. We also analyze the dependence of spin conductivity on the dephasing strength. In addition, by analyzing the decay of spin-spin correlation function we discover a presence of long-range order for finite chain sizes. All our results for a one-dimensional spin chain at infinite temperature can be equivalently rephrased for strongly-interacting disordered spinless fermions.
As a potential window on transitions out of the ergodic, many-body-delocalized phase, we study the dephasing of weakly disordered, quasi-one-dimensional fermion systems due to a diffusive, non-Markovian noise bath. Such a bath is self-generated by the fermions, via inelastic scattering mediated by short-ranged interactions. We calculate the dephasing of weak localization perturbatively through second order in the bath coupling. However, the expansion breaks down at long times, and is not stabilized by including a mean-field decay rate, signaling a failure of the self-consistent Born approximat…
The spin transport in isotropic Heisenberg model in the sector with zero magnetization is generically super-diffusive. Despite that, we here demonstrate that for a specific set of domain-wall-like initial product states it can instead be diffusive. We theoretically explain the time evolution of such states by showing that in the limiting regime of weak spatial modulation they are approximately product states for very long times, and demonstrate that even in the case of larger spatial modulation the bipartite entanglement entropy grows only logarithmically in time. In the limiting regime we der…
In two dimensions (2D), dephasing by a bath cuts off Anderson localization that would otherwise occur at any energy density for fermions with disorder. For an isolated system with short-range interactions, the system can be its own bath, exhibiting diffusive (non-Markovian) thermal density fluctuations. We recast the dephasing of weak localization due to a diffusive bath as a self-interacting polymer loop. We investigate the critical behavior of the loop in $d=4-ε$ dimensions, and find a nontrivial fixed point corresponding to a temperature $T^* \sim ε>0$ where the dephasing time diverges. Ass…
We study transport in a one-dimensional boundary-driven Anderson insulator (the XX spin chain with onsite disorder) with randomly positioned onsite dephasing, observing a transition from diffusive to subdiffusive spin transport below a critical density of sites with dephasing. This model is intended to mimic the passage of an excitation through (many-body) insulating regions or ergodic bubbles, therefore providing a toy model for the diffusion-subdiffusion transition observed in the disordered Heisenberg model [1]. We also present the exact solution of a semiclassical model of conductors and i…
We study high temperature spin transport in a disordered Heisenberg chain in the ergodic regime. By employing a density matrix renormalization group technique for the study of the stationary states of the boundary-driven Lindblad equation we are able to study extremely large systems (400 spins). We find both a diffusive and a subdiffusive phase depending on the strength of the disorder and on the anisotropy parameter of the Heisenberg chain. Studying finite-size effects we show numerically and theoretically that a very large crossover length exists that controls the passage of a clean-system d…
We study the dynamics of an isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain starting in a domain-wall initial condition, where the spins are initially up on the left half-line and down on the right half-line. We focus on the long-time behavior of the magnetization profile. We perform extensive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group simulations (up to t=350) and find that the data are compatible with a diffusive behavior. Subleading corrections decay slowly blurring the emergence of the diffusive behavior. We also compare our results with two alternative scenarios: superdiffusive behavior and …
We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C \sim t^{-β}$, while the conductivity exhibits a low frequency power law $σ\sim ω^α$. The exponents depict sub-diffusive behavior $ β< 1/2, α> 0 $ at all finite disorders, and convergence to the scaling result, $…
We investigate the Heisenberg XXZ-chain with long-range interactions in the Z-dimension. By applying two magnetic boundary reservoirs we drive the system out of equilibrium and induce a non-zero steady state current. The long-range coupled chain shows nearly ballistic transport and linear response for all potential differences of the external reservoirs. In contrast, the common isotropic nearest-neighbor coupling shows negative differential conductivity and a transition from diffusive to subdiffusive transport for a far from equilibrium driving. Adding disorder, the change in the transport for…
We study an open Heisenberg XXZ spin chain with long-range Ising-type interaction, which is incoherently driven at its boundaries and therefore a far-from-equilibrium steady state current is induced. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques make a regime accessible, where the system size is large enough to examine the transition from a diffusive to a ballistic transport regime. We find that the chain lengths for this transition are increasing with decreasing range of the Ising-type interactions between distant spins, while the strength of the incoherent driving does not have a relevant effect on the tra…
We study the microscopic dynamics of competing ordered phases in a two-dimensional correlated electron model, which is driven with a pulsed electric field of finite duration. In order to go beyond a mean-field treatment of the electronic interactions we adopt a large-$N$ generalization of the Hubbard model and combine it with the semiclassical fermionic truncated Wigner approximation as a time evolution method. This allows us to calculate dephasing corrections to the mean-field dynamics and to obtain stationary states, which we interpret as prethermal order. We use this framework to simulate t…
The search for departures from standard hydrodynamics in many-body systems has yielded a number of promising leads, especially in low dimension. Here we study one of the simplest classical interacting lattice models, the nearest-neighbour Heisenberg chain, with temperature as tuning parameter. Our numerics expose strikingly different spin dynamics between the antiferromagnet, where it is largely diffusive, and the ferromagnet, where we observe strong evidence either of spin super-diffusion or an extremely slow crossover to diffusion. This difference also governs the equilibration after a quenc…
We study the low-temperature physics of the $SU(2)$-symmetric spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice and find fingerprint evidence for the thermal spin-ice state in this frustrated quantum magnet. Our conclusions are based on the results of bold diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, with good convergence of the skeleton series down to the temperature $T/J=1/6$. The identification of the spin-ice state is done through a remarkably accurate microscopic correspondence for the static structure factor between the quantum Heisenberg, classical Heisenberg, and Ising models at a…
The large-scale dynamics of quantum integrable systems is often dominated by ballistic modes due to the existence of stable quasi-particles. We here consider as an archetypical example for such a system the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX Heisenberg chain that features magnons and their bound states. An interesting question, which we here investigate numerically, arises with respect to the fate of ballistic modes at finite temperatures in the limit of zero magnetization $m{=}0$. At a finite magnetization density $m$, the spin autocorrelation function $Π(x,t)$ (at high temperatures) typically exhibits a…
We establish a general connection between ballistic and diffusive transport in systems where the ballistic contribution in canonical ensemble vanishes. A lower bound on the Green-Kubo diffusion constant is derived in terms of the curvature of the ideal transport coefficient, the Drude weight, with respect to the filling parameter. As an application, we explicitly determine the lower bound on the high temperature diffusion constant in the anisotropic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain for anisotropy parameters $Δ\geq 1$, thus settling the question whether the transport is sub-diffusive or not. Addi- tio…
We study the spin dynamics of classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest neighbor interactions on a quasi-two-dimensional kagome bilayer. This geometrically frustrated lattice consists of two kagome layers connected by a triangular-lattice linking layer. By combining Monte Carlo with precessional spin dynamics simulations, we compute the dynamical structure factor of the classical spin liquid in kagome bilayer and investigate the thermal and dilution effects. While the low frequency and long wavelength dynamics of the cooperative paramagnetic phase is dominated by spin diffusion, weak m…
