We construct an asymmetric braneworld embedding with induced gravity on the brane, where stringy effects are taken into account by incorporation of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. We derive the effective Friedmann equation of the brane and then we investigate the possible realization of the phantom-like behavior in this setup. We show that in the absence of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action (a pure induced gravity scenario), the phantom-like behavior in asymmetric case can be realized in smaller redshift than the corresponding symmetric case. We show also that in the general case with curvature effect, the phantom-like behavior can be realized in two subcases: in a symmetric subcase and also in an asymmetric branch of the solutions. In either cases this phantom-like behavior happens without introducing any phantom fields neither on the brane nor in the bulk.
We study the phantom-like behavior of a DGP-inspired braneworld scenario where curvature correction on the brane is taken into account. We include a possible modification of the induced gravity on the brane by incorporating higher order curvature terms of Gauss-Bonnet type. We investigate the cosmological implications of the model and we show that the normal branch of the scenario self-accelerates in this modified scenario without introducing any dark energy component. Also, a phantom-like behavior can be realized in this model without introducing any phantom field that suffers from serious di…
We study the autonomous system for a scalar-tensor model of dark energy with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal couplings. The critical points describe important stable asymptotic scenarios including quintessence, phantom and de Sitter attractor solutions. Two functional forms for the coupling functions and the scalar potential were considered: power-law and exponential functions of the scalar field. For the exponential functions the existence of stable quintessence, phantom or de Sitter solutions, allows an asymptotic behavior where the effective Newtonian coupling becomes constant. The phantom sol…

The solution of dark energy problem in the models without scalars is presented. It is shown that late-time accelerating cosmology may be generated by the ideal fluid with some implicit equation of state. The universe evolution within modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered. It is demonstrated that such gravitational approach may predict the (quintessential, cosmological constant or transient phantom) acceleration of the late-time universe with natural transiton from deceleration to acceleration (or from non-phantom to phantom era in the last case).
In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of phantom black hole and wormhole solutions in the weak limit approximation. More specifically, in the first part of this work, we study the deflection of light by Garfinkle-Horowitz-Ströminger black hole and Einstein-Maxwell anti-dilaton black hole using the optical geometry and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Our calculations show that gravitational lensing is affected by the phantom scalar field (phantom dilaton). In the second part of this work, we explore the deflection of light by a class of asymptotically flat phantom wormholes. In p…
We propose the Gauss-Bonnet dark energy model inspired by string/M-theory where standard gravity with scalar contains additional scalar-dependent coupling with Gauss-Bonnet invariant. It is demonstrated that effective phantom (or quintessence) phase of late universe may occur in the presence of such term when the scalar is phantom or for non-zero potential (for canonical scalar). However, with the increase of the curvature the GB term may become dominant so that phantom phase is transient and $w=-1$ barrier may be passed. Hence, the current acceleration of the universe may be caused by mixture…

It has been shown recently that phantom-like effect can be realized on the normal branch of the DGP setup without introduction of any phantom matter neither in the bulk nor on the brane and therefore without violation of the null energy condition. It has been shown also that inclusion of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action modifies this picture via curvature effects. Here, based on the Lue-Starkman conjecture on the dynamical screening of the brane cosmological constant in the DGP setup, we extend this proposal to a general DGP-inspired $f(R,ϕ)$ model that stringy effects in the ultra-vio…
We construct a holographic dark energy model with a non-minimally coupled scalar field on the brane where Gauss-Bonnet and Induced Gravity effects are taken into account. This model provides a wide parameter space with several interesting cosmological implications. Especially, the equation of state parameter of the model crosses the phantom divide line and it is possible to realize bouncing solutions in this setup.
In the present work we investigate the cosmological implications of the entropy-corrected holographic dark energy (ECHDE) density in the Gauss-Bonnet framework. This is motivated from the loop quantum gravity corrections to the entropy-area law. Assuming the two cosmological scenarios are valid simultaneously, we show that there is a correspondence between the ECHDE scenario in flat universe and the phantom dark energy model in the framework of Gauss-Bonnet theory with a potential. This correspondence leads consistently to an accelerating universe.
An induced gravity brane-world model is considered herein. A Gauss-Bonnet term is provided for the bulk, whereas phantom matter is present on the brane. It is shown that a combination of infra-red and ultra-violet modifications to general relativity replaces a big rip singularity: A sudden singularity emerges instead. Using current observational data, we also determine a range of values for the cosmic time corresponding to the sudden singularity occurrence.
We study effects of cosmic fluids on finite-time future singularities in modified $f(R,G)$-gravity, where $R$ and $G$ are the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, respectively. We consider the fluid equation of state in the general form, $ω=ω(ρ)$, and we suppose the existence of a bulk viscosity. We investigate quintessence region ($ω>-1$) and phantom region ($ω<-1$) and the possibility to change or avoid the singularities in $f(R,G)$-gravity. Finally, we study the inclusion of quantum effects in large curvatures regime.
We consider a scalar-tensor model of dark energy with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal couplings. Exact cosmological solutions were found in absence of potential, that give equations of state of dark energy consistent with current observational constraints, but with different asymptotic behaviors depending on the couplings of the model. A detailed reconstruction procedure is given for the scalar potential and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling for any given cosmological scenario. Particularly, we consider conditions for the existence of a variety of cosmological solutions with accelerated expansion, includ…
We consider a scalar-tensor model of dark energy with kinetic and Gauss Bonnet couplings. We study the conditions for the existence of quintessential and phantom power-law expansion, and also analyze these conditions in absence of potential (closely related to string theory). A mechanism to avoid the Big Rip singularity in various asymptotic limits of the model has been studied. It was found that the kinetic and Gauss-Bonnet couplings might prevent the Big Rip singularity in a phantom scenario. The autonomous system for the model has been used to study the stability properties of the power-law…
We suggest the modified gravity where some arbitrary function of Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term is added to Einstein action as gravitational dark energy. It is shown that such theory may pass solar system tests. It is demonstrated that modified GB gravity may describe the most interesting features of late-time cosmology: the transition from deceleration to acceleration, crossing the phantom divide, current acceleration with effective (cosmological constant, quintessence or phantom) equation of state of the universe.
In the present work we study (i) charged black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory, known as Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) black hole and (ii) black hole in EGB gravity with Yang-Mills field. The thermodynamic geometry of these two black hole solutions has been investigated, using the modified entropy in Gauss-Bonnet theory.
Gauss-Bonnet gravity provides one of the most promising frameworks to study curvature corrections to the Einstein action in supersymmetric string theories, while avoiding ghosts and keeping second order field equations. Although Schwarzschild-type solutions for Gauss-Bonnet black holes have been known for long, the Kerr-Gauss-Bonnet metric is missing. In this paper, a five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet approximation is analytically derived for spinning black holes and the related thermodynamical properties are briefly outlined.
In this paper, we will generalize the Gauss-Bonnet gravity to an energy dependent Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, which we shall call as the Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow. We will also couple this theory to a Maxwell's theory. We will analyze black hole solutions in this energy dependent Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow. We will calculate the modifications to the thermodynamics of black holes in the Gauss-Bonnet's gravity's rainbow. We will demonstrate that even though the thermodynamics of the black holes get modified in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow, the first law of thermodynamics still…
Dark energy cosmologies with an equation of state parameter $w$ less than -1 are often found to violate the null energy condition and show unstable behaviour. A solution to this problem may require the existence of a consistent effective theory that violates the null energy condition only momentarily and does not develop any instabilities or other pathological features for a late time cosmology. A model which incorporates a dynamical scalar field $ϕ$ coupled to the quadratic Riemann invariant of the Gauss-Bonnet form is a viable proposal. Such an effective theory is shown to admit nonsingular …
This paper deals with five-dimensional black hole solutions in (a) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet theory and (b)Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a cosmological constant for spherically symmetric space time. The geometry of the black hole thermodynamics has been studied for both the black holes.
In this paper we investigate the strong gravitational lensing with Gauss-Bonnet gravity. By considering the logarithmic term for deflection angle, we obtain the deflection angle $\hatα$ and corresponding parameters $\bar{a}$ and $\bar{b}$. Finally, by using the relations between the observables and lensing parameters, we estimate the observables such as, $θ_{\infty}$, $s$ and $r_m$, for the relativistic images in the Gauss-Bonnet background.
We write down an anisotropic solution for a flat 5+1 dimensional Universe in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the model under investigation this solution replaces the generalized Kasner solution near a cosmological singularity.
We consider the Gauss-Bonnet corrected Bardeen black hole solution in 4-D AdS space-time. The solution is obtained by the limiting procedure adopted by Glavan and Lin in 4-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The general form of first law of black hole thermodynamics is utilized to calculate various thermodynamics variables. The solution exhibit P-v criticality and belong to the universality class of van-der Waals fluid. The effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling is investigated on critical parameters and inversion temperature.
The time delay between two relativistic images in the strong gravitational lensing governed by Gauss-Bonnet gravity is studied. We derive and calculate the expression of time delay due to the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. It is shown that the time delay for two images with larger space each other is longer. We also find that the ratio of Gauss-Bonnet coefficient and the mass of gravitational source changes in the region like $\fracα{M}\in[0,2)$. The time delay is divergent with $\fracα{M}\longrightarrow 2$.
We study the massless scalar, Dirac and electro-magnetic fields propagating on a 4D-brane, which is embedded in higher dimensional Gauss-Bonnet space-time. We calculate, in time-domain, the fundamental quasi-normal modes of a spherically symmetric black hole for such fields. We observe also a universal behavior, independent on a field and value of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, at asymptotically late time.
The influence of non-minimal coupling of a scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet term on the inflationary stage of evolution of the universe is investigated in this paper. The main cosmological effects of such a coupling were considered. The deviations between Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet inflation and standard one based on Einstein gravity were determined. The corrections of a weak GB coupling preserving the type of the scalar field potential to standard inflationary models is considered as well.
We have investigated tidal forces and geodesic deviation motion in the 4D-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet spacetime. Our results show that tidal force and geodesic deviation motion depend sharply on the sign of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. Comparing with Schwarzschild spacetime, the strength of tidal force becomes stronger for the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, but is weaker for the positive one. Moreover, tidal force behaves like those in the Schwarzschild spacetime as the coupling constant is negative, and like those in Reissner-Nordström black hole as the constant is positive. We also pr…
We consider black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) gravity in a dynamical setup and also the stationary black hole in recently discovered\cite{Glavan} $4$-dimensional novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. For dynamical EGB black hole in completely local settings we calculate the temperature associated with the horizon. For the stationary black hole in $4$-dimensional novel EGB theory we explore the thermodynamic properties including calculation of temperature and entropy.
By adopting the 5D version of the Wu-Yang Ansatz we present in closed form a black hole solution in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet (EYMGB) theory. In the EYM limit, we recover the 5D black hole solution already known.
We investigate the absorption cross section of planar scalar massless waves impinging on spherically symmetric black holes which are solutions of the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. Besides the mass of the black hole, the solution depends also on the Gauss-Bonnet constant coupling. Using the partial waves approach, we show that the absorption cross section depends on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. Our numerical results present excellent agreement with the low- and high- frequency approximations, including the so-called sinc approximation.
We study the phase space of the spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein Gauss-Bonnet system nonminimally coupled to a scalar field and show that in four dimensions the only regular black hole solutions are asymptotically flat
In this paper, we first use the optical metrics of black-bounce traversable wormholes to calculate the Gaussian curvature. Then we use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to obtain the weak deflection angle of light from the black-bounce traversable wormholes. Then we investigate the effect of dark matter medium on weak deflection angle using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We show how weak deflection angle of wormhole is affected by the bounce parameter $a$. Using the Gauss-bonnet theorem for calculating weak deflection angle shows us that light bending can be thought as a global and topological effect.
We study the cosmological model based on Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with non-minimal coupling of a scalar field to a Gauss-Bonnet term in 4D Friedmann universe. We show how constructing the exact solutions by the method based on a confrontation of the Hubble parameter in the model under consideration with that in a standard scalar field inflationary cosmology.
We study the phase space of the spherically symmetric solutions of the system obtained from the dimensional reduction of the six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet action with a cosmological constant. We show that all the physical solutions have anti-de Sitter asymptotic behavior.
We study the phase space of the spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet system nonminimally coupled to a scalar field and prove the existence of solutions with unusual asymptotics in addition to asymptotically flat ones. We also find new dyonic solutions of dilatonic Einstein-Maxwell theory.
A Vaidya-based model of a radiating black-hole is studied in a 5-dimensional Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet contribution of quadratic curvature terms. The structure and locations of the apparent and event horizons of the radiating black hole are determined.
The influence of the Maxwell field on a static, asymptotically flat and spherically-symmetric Gauss-Bonnet black hole is considered. Numerical computations suggest that if the charge increases beyond a critical value, the inner determinant singularity is replaced by an inner singular horizon.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the spherically symmetric solutions of the system obtained from the dimensional reduction of the six-dimensional Einstein- Gauss-Bonnet action. We show that in general the scalar field that parametrizes the size of the internal space is not trivial, but nevertheless the solutions depend on a single parameter. In analogy with other models containing Gauss-Bonnet terms, naked singularities are avoided if a minimal radius for the horizon is assumed.
The purpose of this Comment is to point out that there are conceptual and mathematical flaws in the analysis in "Light deflection by Damour-Solodukhin wormholes and Gauss-Bonnet theorem, Phys. Rev. D 98, 044033 (2018) by Ali Övgün".
The objective of this paper is to analyze the weak deflection angle of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of plasma medium. To attain our results, we implement the Gibbons and Werner approach and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to Einstein gravity to acquire the resulting deflection angle of photon's ray in the weak field limit. Moreover, we illustrate the behavior of plasma medium and non-plasma mediums on the deflection of photon's ray in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Similarly, we observe the graphical influences of deflection angle on Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
This paper gives a new, simple and concise derivation of brane actions and brane dynamics in general relativity and in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We present a unified treatment, applicable to timelike surface layers and spacelike transition layers, and including consideration of the more difficult lightlike case.
We study the phase space of the spherically symmetric solutions of the system obtained from the dimensional reduction of the six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss- Bonnet action. We show the existence of solutions with nonflat asymptotic behavior.
A self-interacting SU(2)-doublet of complex scalar fields, minimally coupled to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered in five space-time dimensions. The classical equations admit two families of solitons corresponding to spinning and non-spinning bosons stars. The generic solutions are constructed numerically and agree with exact results that are available in special limits of the parameters. The pattern of the boson stars is shown to be qualitatively affected by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.
We consider a Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi type space-time in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms, and present exact solution in closed form. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms alpha > 0 completely changes the causal structure of the singularities from the analogous general relativistic case. The gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust in the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet extended Einstein equations leads to formation of a massive, but weak, timelike singularity which is forbidden in general relativity…
In this paper, we have investigated the dynamics of magnetized particles around 4-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole immersed in an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field. We have shown that the magnetic interaction parameter responsible for circular orbits decreases for negative values of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $α$ and the range where magnetized particle's stable circular orbits are allowed increases for the positive values of the parameter $α$. The study of the collisions of magnetized, charged and neutral particles has shown that the center-of-mass energy of the particles increa…
In this paper, we find some new exact solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations. First, we prove a theorem which allows us to find a large family of solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in $n$-dimensions. This family of solutions represents dynamic black holes and contains, as particular cases, not only the recently found Vaidya-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole, but also other physical solutions that we think are new, such as, the Gauss-Bonnet versions of the Bonnor-Vaidya(de Sitter/anti-de Sitter) solution, a global monopole and the Husain black holes. We also present a more …
We present a model of holographic dark energy in which the Infrared cutoff is determined by both the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet invariants. Such a construction has the significant advantage that the Infrared cutoff, and consequently the holographic dark energy density, does not depend on the future or the past evolution of the universe, but only on its current features, and moreover it is determined by invariants, whose role is fundamental in gravitational theories. We extract analytical solutions for the behavior of the dark energy density and equation-of-state parameters as functions of the …
We discuss the cosmological evolution of a braneworld in five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our discussion allows the fifth (bulk) dimension to be space-like as well as time-like. The resulting equations of motion have the form of a cubic equation in the (H^2,(ρ+σ)^2) plane, where σis the brane tension and ρis the matter density. This allows us to conduct a comprehensive pictorial analysis of cosmological evolution for the Gauss-Bonnet brane. The many interesting properties of this braneworld include the possibility of accelerated expansion at late times. For a finite region in parameter s…
We study holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We consider two particular backgrounds: a $d$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole and a Gauss-Bonnet-AdS soliton. We discuss in detail the effects that the mass of the scalar field, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the dimensionality of the AdS space have on the condensation formation and conductivity. We also study the ratio $ω_g/T_c $ for various masses of the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet couplings.
In the present work, the observational consequences of a subclass of of the Horndeski theory have been investigated. In this theory a scalar field (tachyon field) non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant through an arbitrary function of the scalar field. By considering a spatially flat FRW universe, the free parameters of the model have been constrained using a joint analysis from observational data of the Type Ia supernovae and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations measurements. The best fit values obtained from these datasets are then used to reconstruct the equation of state parameter of …
We study a model of scalar field with kinetic terms non-minimally coupled to to the curvature, and the scalar field coupled to the Gauss Bonnet 4-dimensional invariant. A variety of solutions are found, giving rise to different cosmological scenarios. A unified description of early time matter (radiation) dominance with transitions to late time quintessence and phantom phases have been made. Among others, we found solutions unifying asymptotically the early power law behavior and late time cosmological constant. Solutions of Chaplygin gas and generalized Chaplygin gas cosmologies have also bee…
