An amalgam of groups can be viewed as a Sudoku game inside a group. You are given a set of subgroups and their intersections and you need to decide what the largest group containing such a structure can be. In a recent paper (0907.1388v1) we used Bass-Serre theory of graphs of groups to classify all possible amalgams of Curtis-Tits shape with a given diagram. This note describes the method for general rank two amalgams.
A well known theorem of Burns and Romanovskii states that a free product of subgroup separable groups is itself subgroup separable. We provide a proof using the language of immersions and coverings of graphs of groups, due to Bass.
We develop a version of the Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras (over a field $k$) via a homological approach. We define the notion of fundamental Lie algebra of a graph of Lie algebras and show that this construction yields Mayer-Vietoris sequences. We extend some well known results in group theory to $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras: for example, we show that one relator $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras are iterated HNN extensions with free bases which can be used for cohomology computations and apply the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to give some results about coherence of Lie algebras.
The word problem of a finitely generated group is the formal language of words over the generators which are equal to the identity in the group. If this language happens to be context-free, then the group is called context-free. Finitely generated virtually free groups are context-free. In a seminal paper Muller and Schupp showed the converse: A context-free group is virtually free. Over the past decades a wide range of other characterizations of context-free groups have been found. The present notes survey most of these characterizations. Our aim is to show how the different characterizations…
This paper addresses questions of quasi-isometric rigidity and classification for fundamental groups of finite graphs of groups, under the assumption that the Bass-Serre tree of the graph of groups has finite depth. The main example of a finite depth graph of groups is one whose vertex and edge groups are coarse Poincare duality groups. The main theorem says that, under certain hypotheses, if G is a finite graph of coarse Poincare duality groups then any finitely generated group quasi-isometric to the fundamental group of G is also the fundamental group of a finite graph of coarse Poincare dua…
A fundamental result of Bass-Serre theory is the following theorem: an abstract group is a free product with amalgamation if and only if it acts on a tree with a segment as fundamental domain. In this article, an analogous result for profinite groups wi…
Serre in "Trees" laid down the fundamentals of the theory of groups acting on simplicial trees. In particular, Bass-Serre theory makes it possible to extract information about the structure of a group from its action on a simplicial tree. Serre's original motivation was to understand the structure of certain algebraic groups whose Bruhat--Tits buildings are trees. In this survey we will discuss the following generalizations of ideas from "Trees": the theory of isometric group actions on $Λ$-trees and the theory of lattices in the product of trees where we describe in more detail results on ari…

In 2003 Bieri and Geoghegan generalized the Bieri-Neuman-Strebel invariant $Σ^1$ by defining $Σ^1(ρ)$, $ρ$ an isometric action by a finitely generated group $G$ on a proper CAT(0) space $M$. In this paper, we show how the natural and well-known connection between Bass-Serre theory and covering space theory provides a framework for the calculation of $Σ^1(ρ)$ when $ρ$ is a cocompact action by $G = B \rtimes A$, $A$ a finitely generated group, on a locally finite Bass-Serre tree $T$ for $A$. This framework leads to a theorem providing conditions for including an endpoint in, or excluding an endp…
We construct total orders on the vertex set of an oriented tree. The orders are based only on up-down counts at the interior vertices and the edges along the unique geodesic from a given vertex to another. As an application, we provide a short proof (modulo Bass-Serre theory) of Vinogradov's result that the free product of left-orderable groups is left-orderable.
Given a graph of groups $\mathcal{G} = (Γ, \{G_v\}, \{G_e\})$ with certain conditions on vertex groups and $G$ acts acylindrically on its Bass-Serre tree $T$. Let $H$ be a finitely generated subgroup of $G$. We prove the following statements equivalence: $H$ has finite height, $(G, T, H)$ is a $A/QI$--triple, $H$ is strongly quasiconvex and virtually free in $G$. We also give a condition to determine whether strong quasiconvexity in a group is preserved under amalgams.
We describe the structure of the automorphism groups of algebras Morita equivalent to the first Weyl algebra $ A_1 $. In particular, we give a geometric presentation for these groups in terms of amalgamated products, using the Bass-Serre theory of groups acting on graphs. A key rôle in our approach is played by a transitive action of the automorphism group of the free algebra $ \c < x, y > $ on the Calogero-Moser varieties $ \CC_n $ defined in \cite{BW}. Our results generalize well-known theorems of Dixmier and Makar-Limanov on automorphisms of $ A_1 $, answering an old question of Stafford (s…
We prove that the reduced Kurosh rank of the intersection of two subgroups $H$ and $K$ of a free product of right-orderable groups is bounded above by the product of the reduced Kurosh ranks of $H$ and $K$. In particular, taking the fundamental group of a graph of groups with trivial vertex and edge groups, and its Bass-Serre tree, our Theorem becomes the desired inequality of the usual Strengthened Hanna Neumann conjecture for free groups.
A celebrated theorem of Curtis and Tits on groups with finite BN-pair shows that roughly speaking these groups are determined by their local structure. This result was later extended to Kac-Moody groups by P.~Abramenko and B.~Mühlherr. Their theorem states that a Kac-Moody group $G$ is the universal completion of an amalgam of rank two (Levi) subgroups, as they are arranged inside $G$ itself. Taking this result as a starting point, we define a Curtis-Tits structure over a given diagram to be an amalgam of groups such that the sub-amalgam corresponding to a two-vertex sub-diagram is the Curtis-…
A group $G$ splits over a subgroup $C$ if $G$ is either a free product with amalgamation $A \underset{C}{\ast} B$ or an HNN-extension $G=A \underset{C}{\ast} (t)$. We invoke Bass-Serre theory and classify all infinite groups which admit cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity two in terms of splittings over a subgroup.
Let C be a smooth, projective and geometrically integral curve defined over a finite field F. For each closed point P of C, let R be the ring of functions that are regular outside P, and let K be the completion at P of the function field of C. In order to study groups of the form GL2(R), Serre describes the quotient graph GL2(R)\t, where t is the Bruhat-Tits tree defined from SL2(K). In particular, Serre shows that GL2(R)\t is the union of a finite graph and a finite number of ray shaped subgraphs, which are called cusps. It is not hard to see that finite index subgroups inherit this property.…
We study ascending HNN-extensions $G$ of finitely generated free abelian groups: examples of such $G$ include soluble Baumslag-Solitar groups and fundamental groups of orientable prime $3$-manifolds modelled on Sol geometry. In particular, we study the elliptic subgroup $A \leq G$, consisting of all elements that stabilise a point in the Bass-Serre tree of $G$. We consider the density of $A$ with respect to ball counting measures corresponding to finite generating sets of $G$, and we show that $A$ is exponentially negligible in $G$ with respect to such sequences of measures. As a consequence, …
Let $F$ be a finite-rank free group and $H$ be a finite-rank subgroup of $F$. We discuss proofs of two algorithms that sandwich $H$ between an upper-layer free-product factor of $F$ that contains $H$ and a lower-layer free-product factor of $F$ that is contained in $H$. Richard Stong showed that the unique smallest-possible upper layer, denoted $\operatorname{Cl}(H)$, is visible in the output of the polynomial-time cut-vertex algorithm of J. H. C. Whitehead. Stong's proof used bi-infinite paths in a Cayley tree and sub-surfaces of a three-manifold. We give a variant of his proof that uses edge…
We give an example of a subgroup of SL(2,C) which is a strictly ascending HNN extension of a non-abelian finitely generated free group F. In particular, we exhibit a free group F in SL(2,C) of rank 6 which is conjugate to a proper subgroup of itself. This answers positively a question of Drutu and Sapir. The main ingredient in our construction is a specific finite volume (noncompact) hyperbolic 3-manifold M which is a surface bundle over the circle. In particular, most of F comes from the fundamental group of a surface fiber. A key feature of M is that there is an element of its fundamental gr…
