We present results of the Suzaku observation of the dipping, periodically bursting low mass X-ray binary XB 1323-619 in which we concentrate of the spectral evolution in dipping in the energy range 0.8 - 70 keV. It is shown that spectral evolution in dipping is well-described by absorption on the bulge in the outer accretion disk of two continuum components: emission of the neutron star plus the dominant, extended Comptonized emission of the accretion disk corona (ADC). This model is further supported by detection of a relatively small, energy-independent decrease of flux above 20 keV due to Thomson scattering. It is shown that this is consistent with the electron scattering expected of the bulge plasma. We address the recent proposal that the dip sources may be explained by an ionized absorber model giving a number of physical arguments against this model. In particular, that model is inconsistent with the extended nature of the ADC for which the evidence is now overwhelming.
In magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (mCVs), X-ray radiation originates from the shock heated multi-temperature plasma in the post-shock region near the white dwarf surface. These X-rays are modified by a complex distribution of absorbers in the pre-shock region. The presence of photo-ionized lines and warm absorber features in the soft X-ray spectra of these mCVs suggests that these absorbers are ionized. We developed the ionized complex absorber model zxipab, which is represented by a power-law distribution of ionized absorbers in the pre-shock flow. Using the ionized absorber model zxipab alon…
We have performed several simulations in order to test the scientific capabilities of the IXO calorimeter, with particular emphasis on the detection of absorption lines in the 3-11keV band. We derived the flux limits for their detection on several time-scales, compared different response matrices available and simulated realistic spectra from photo-ionized warm absorbers in AGNs. This study illustrates the considerable improvements that this instrument will bring to high resolution spectroscopy, especially related to the study of accretion and outflows in the central regions of AGNs.
We present a reanalysis of XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer data of the classical nova V2491 Cyg obtained from two different pointings, 40 d and 50 d after outburst utilizing the SRON software SPEX version 2.05.04. We aim to model absorption components using hot collisionally ionized absorber models along with interstellar absorption (of gas and dust origin separately). We find blackbody temperatures in a range 61-91 eV for the continuum yielding a white dwarf mass of 1.15-1.3 M_sun. We derive two different hot absorber components with blueshifts yielding 2900-3800 km/s for the first…
The Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 is known to exhibit significant X-ray spectral/flux variations and have a number of emission/absorption features. X-ray observations have revealed that these absorption features are blueshifted, which indicates that NGC 4051 has warm absorber outflow. In order to constrain physical parameters of the warm absorber outflow, we analyze the archival data with the longest exposure taken by XMM-Newton in 2009. We calculate the root-mean-square (RMS) spectra with the grating spectral resolution for the first time. The RMS spectra have a sharp peak and several…

We extend our modeling of the ionization structure of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds, previously applied to Seyfert galaxies, to a population of quasi-stellar-objects (QSOs) of much lower X-ray-to-UV flux ratios, i.e. smaller $α_{\rm ox}$ index, motivated by UV/X-ray ionized absorbers with extremely high outflow velocities in UV-luminous QSOs. We demonstrate that magnetically-driven winds ionized by a spectrum with $α_{\rm ox} \simeq -2$ can produce the charge states responsible for \civ ~and \fexxv/\fexxvi ~absorption in wind regions with corresponding maximum velocities of $v…
AX J1745.6-2901 is a Low Mass X-ray Binary with an accreting neutron star, showing clear evidence for highly ionized absorption. Strong ionized Fe K$α$ and K$β$ absorption lines are always observed during the soft state, whereas they disappear during the hard states. We computed photoionization stability curves for the hard and the soft state, under different assumptions on the adopted spectral energy distributions and the physical parameters of the plasma. We observe that the ionized absorber lies always on a stable branch of the photoionization stability curve during the soft state, while it…
Photoionized absorbers of outflowing gas are commonly found in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). While most of these absorbers are seldom significantly variable, some ionized obscurers have been increasingly found to substantially change their column density on a wide range of time scales. These $N_\text{H}$ variations are often considered as the signature of the clumpy nature of the absorbers. Here we present the analysis of a new Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory campaign of the type-1 quasar PG 1114+445, which was observed to investigate the time evolution of the multiphase ou…
We analyze the \textit{Chandra} High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation of the Seyfert $2$ AGN IRAS\,18325-5926. We detect a $v=-360^{+41}_{-66}$~km~s$^{-1}$ blueshifted ionized absorber in the X-ray spectrum, with photoionization parameter $\logξ=2.0^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ and hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H}=1.55^{+0.75}_{-0.38}\times10^{21}$~cm$^{-2}$. The absorber may be a photoionized wind originating in the obscuring torus/global covering around the black hole or outer edge of the accretion disk. The estimated mass outflow rate suggests that the supermassive black hol…
We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionised. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM-Newton (2002) observations we find variability of the X-ray spectral curvature. We suggest that the variability can be explained through the change of column density of both the neutral and one of the ionised absorbers, together with a variation of the ionisation level of the s…
We re-analyzed the 9 observations performed on 2006 by XMM-Newton and Chandra in the 0.3 to 10 keV energy band of NGC 3516 (Seyfert 1.5). The best fit model of these observations consists of a continuum emission absorbed by four ionized components and ten narrow emission lines. Three ionized absorbing components produce features in the soft X-ray band. The fourth ionization component produces FeXXV-XXVI in the hard- energy band. We study the absorbers time response to well detect changes in the X-ray luminosity of this source, only two components show clear opacity changes consistent with gas …
We present here the results of a 180 ks Chandra-LETGS observation as part of a large multi-wavelength campaign on Mrk 509. We study the warm absorber in Mrk 509 and use the data from a simultaneous HST-COS observation in order to assess whether the gas responsible for the UV and X-ray absorption are the same. We analyzed the LETGS X-ray spectrum of Mrk 509 using the SPEX fitting package. We detect several absorption features originating in the ionized absorber of the source, along with resolved emission lines and radiative recombination continua. The absorption features belong to ions with, at…
X-ray observations of the Galactic X-ray binaries (XRB) revealed numerous highly ionized metal absorption lines. However, it is unclear whether such lines are produced by the hot interstellar medium (ISM) or the circumstellar medium (CSM) intrinsic to the binaries. Here we present a Chandra X-ray absorption line study of 28 observations on 12 X-ray binaries, with a focus on the NeIX and FeXVII lines. We report the first detections of these lines in a significant amount of observations. We do not find significant dependence of the line equivalent width on the distance of the XRBs, but we do see…
(abridged) We analyzed the archived XMM-Newton observation of the poorly studied low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1710-281 performed in 2004 that covered one orbital period of the system (3.8 hr). The source shows dips as well as eclipses, hence it is viewed close to edge-on. We modeled the spectral changes between persistent and dips in the framework of the partial covering model and the ionized absorber approach. The persistent spectrum can be fit by a power law with a photon index of 1.94(+-0.02) affected by absorption from cool material with a hydrogen column density of 0.401(+-0.007)*10^22 cm^-…
We report the results from X-ray studies of the newly discovered black hole candidate MAXI J1305-704 based on Suzaku and Swift observations in the low/hard and high/soft states, respectively. The long Suzaku observation shows two types of clear absorption dips, both of which recur on a dip interval of 9.74 +- 0.04 hours, which we identify with the orbital period. There is also partially ionized absorption in the non-dip (persistent) emission in both the high/soft state and, very unusually, the low/hard state. However, this absorption (in both states) has substantially lower ionization than tha…
In this paper we present the results obtained with a monitoring programme (23 days long) performed with Swift-XRT on the local Seyfert galaxy Mrk 915. The light-curve analysis shows a significant count rate variation (about a factor of 2-3) on a time-scale of a few days, while the X-ray colours show a change in the spectral curvature below 2 keV and the presence of two main spectral states. From the spectral analysis we find that the observed variations can be explained by the change of the intrinsic nuclear power (about a factor of 1.5) coupled with a change of the properties of an ionized ab…
We present the time-resolved spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton data of NGC 1365, collected during one XMM-Newton observation, which caught this "changing-look" AGN in a high flux state characterized also by a low column density ($N_{\mathrm{H}}\sim 10^{22}$ cm $^{-2}$) of the X-ray absorber. During this observation the low energy photoelectric cut-off is at about $\sim 1$ keV and the primary continuum can be investigated with the XMM-Newton-RGS data, which show strong spectral variability that can be explained as a variable low $N_{\mathrm{H}}$, which decreased from $N_{\mathrm{H}} \sim10^{2…
We report on the X-ray monitoring programme (covering slightly more than 11 days) carried out jointly by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR on the intermediate Seyfert galaxy Mrk 915. The light curves extracted in different energy ranges show a variation in intensity but not a significant change in spectral shape. The X-ray spectra reveal the presence of a two-phase warm absorber: a fully covering mildly ionized structure [log xi/(erg cm/s)~2.3, NH~1.3x10^21 cm-2] and a partial covering (~90 per cent) lower ionized one [log xi/(erg cm/s)~0.6, NH~2x10^22 cm-2]. A reflection component from distant matter is …
We present results from a coordinated IR-to-X-ray spectral campaign of the QSO IRAS 13349+2438. Optical spectra reveal extreme Eigenvector-1 characteristics, but the H-beta line width argues against a NLS1 classification; we refine z=0.10853 based on [O III]. We estimate a BH mass=10^9 Msun using 2 independent methods (H-beta line width & SED fits). Blue-shifted absorption (-950km/s & -75km/s) is seen for the 1st time in STIS UV spectra from Ly-alpha, NV, & CIV. The higher velocity UV lines are coincident with the lower-ionisation (xi~1.6) X-ray warm absorber lines. A dusty multiple ionization…
We propose a simple spectral model for the Seyfert 1 Galaxy MCG-6-30-15 that can explain most of the 1 - 40 keV spectral variation by change of the partial covering fraction, similar to the one proposed by Miller et al. (2008). Our spectral model is composed of three continuum components; (1) a direct power-law component, (2) a heavily absorbed power-law component by mildly ionized intervening matter, and (3) a cold disk reflection component far from the black hole with moderate solid-angle (Ω/2π \approx 0.3) accompanying a narrow fluorescent iron line. The first two components are affected by…
We present new XMM-Newton observations of the intriguing warm absorber in I Zwicky 1. This luminous and nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy shows ionized absorption by two components of outflowing gas; a low and a high-ionization phase with log $ξ$~0 and log $ξ$~2 respectively. Detailed modelling of these data reveal a complex and variable multi-phase warm absorber. However, we find the changes in the ionization state of the gas not to be straightforwardly correlated with the variability of the intrinsic continuum source, in apparent contrast with photoionization equilibrium. The observed vari…
We present a detailed analysis of three XMM-Newton observations of the black hole low-mass X-ray binary IGR~J17091-3624 taken during its 2016 outburst. Radio observations obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) indicate the presence of a compact jet during all observations. From the best X-ray data fit results we concluded that the observations were taken during a transition from a hard accretion state to a hard-intermediate accretion state. For Observations 1 and 2 a local absorber can be identified in the EPIC-pn spectra but not in the RGS spectra, preventing us from disti…
We present the results of recent Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 which shows a strong, non-varying X-ray warm absorber and physically related and kinematically varying UV absorption. We compare our new observations to high-resolution, high signal-to-noise archival data from 2001, allowing a unique investigation into the long-term variations of the absorption over a 12 yr period. We find no statistically significant changes in the physical properties of the X-ray abs…
We present results of an observation with Suzaku of the dipping, periodic bursting low mass X-ray binary XB 1323-619. Using the energy band 0.8 - 70 keV, we show that the source spectrum is well-described as the emission of an extended accretion disk corona, plus a small contribution of blackbody emission from the neutron star. The dip spectrum is well-fitted by the progressive covering model in which the extended ADC is progressively overlapped by the absorbing bulge of low ionization state in the outer accretion disk and that dipping is basically due to photoelectric absorption in the bulge.…
We disentangle X-ray disk reflection from complex line-of-sight absorption in the nearby Seyfert NGC 4151, using a suite of Suzaku, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton observations. Extending upon earlier published work, we pursue a physically motivated model using the latest angle-resolved version of the lamp-post geometry reflection model relxillCp_lp together with a Comptonization continuum. We use the long-look simultaneous Suzaku/NuSTAR observation to develop a baseline model wherein we model reflected emission as a combination of lamp-post components at the heights of 1.2 and 15.0 gravitational radii…

A recent observation of the nearby (z=0.042) narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396 on 2007 May 31 showed strong quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the 0.3-10 keV X-ray flux. We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of this observation, using data obtained by the EPIC PN detector onboard XMM. The "low" phase spectrum, associated with the troughs in the light curve, shows (at >4 sigma confidence level) an absorption edge at 0.86+/-0.05 keV with an absorption depth of 0.3+/-0.1. Ionized oxygen edges are hallmarks of X-ray warm absorbers in Seyfert active galactic nuclei (AGN); the observed e…
We present an investigation of the ultraviolet and X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 817. The ultraviolet analysis includes two recent observations taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph in August and December 2009, as well as archival spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer and the Hubble Space Telescope. Twelve Ly-alpha absorption features are detected in the 1997 GHRS and 2009 COS spectra - of these, four are associated with high-velocity clouds in the interstellar medium, four are at low-significance, and the remaining four are intrinsic features, which vary…

We report the first detection of highly ionized Fe species in the X-ray spectrum of the eclipsing and dipping Low Mass X-ray Binary XTE J1710-281. Using archival Chandra and Suzaku observations, we have carried out a spectro-timing analysis of the source during three different epochs. We compare the average orbital profile and obtain differences in pre-eclipse dip morphologies between different observation epochs. We observe an orbit to orbit evolution of the dips for the first time in this source in both the Chandra observations, reflecting changes in the structure of the accretion disc in ti…
We present evidence for X-ray line emitting and absorbing gas in the nucleus of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG), 3C 445. A 200ks Chandra LETG observation of 3C 445 reveals the presence of several highly ionized emission lines in the soft X-ray spectrum, primarily from the He and H-like ions of O, Ne, Mg and Si. Radiative recombination emission is detected from O VII and O VIII, indicating that the emitting gas is photoionized. The He-like emission appears to be resolved into forbidden and intercombination line components, which implies a high density of >10^{10} cm^{-3}, while the Oxygen li…
The radiation from the central regions of active galactic nuclei, including that from the accretion disk surrounding the black hole, is likely to peak in the extreme ultraviolet $\sim 13 -100$ eV. However, due to Galactic absorption, we are limited to constrain the physical properties, i.e. the black hole mass and the accretion rate, from what observations we have below $\sim 10$ eV or above $\sim 100$ eV. In this paper we predict the thermal and ionization states of warm absorbers as a function of the shape of the unobservable continuum. In particular we model an accretion disk at $kT_{in} \s…
The existence of ionized X-ray absorbing layers of gas along the line of sight to the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies is a well established observational fact. This material is systematically outflowing and shows a large range in parameters. However, its actual nature and dynamics are still not clear. In order to gain insights into these important issues we performed a literature search for papers reporting the parameters of the soft X-ray warm absorbers (WAs) in 35 type 1 Seyferts and compared their properties to those of the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) detected in the same sample. The fraction of …
In this paper we analyze the X-ray, UV and optical data of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy 1H0419-577, with the aim of detecting and studying an ionized-gas outflow. The source was observed simultaneously in the X-rays with XMM and in the UV with HST-COS. Optical data were also acquired with the XMM Optical Monitor. We detected a thin, lowly ionized warm absorber (log xi ~ 0.03, log NH ~19.9 cm^-2) in the X-ray spectrum, consistent to be produced by the same outflow already detected in the UV. Provided the gas density estimated in the UV, the outflow is consistent to be located in the host galaxy, at ~…
We present the discovery of an outflowing ionized wind in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk 335. Despite having been extensively observed by most of the largest X-ray observatories in the last decade, this bright source was not known to host warm absorber gas until recent XMM-Newton observations in combination with a long-term Swift monitoring program have shown extreme flux and spectral variability. High resolution spectra obtained by the XMM-Newton RGS detector reveal that the wind consists of three distinct ionization components, all outflowing at a velocity of 5000 km/s. This wind is clearly reveal…
We report on the performance of the statistical, X-ray absorption lines identification procedure XLINE-ID. As illustration, it is used to estimate the time averaged gas density $n_H(r)$ of a representative AGN's warm absorber ($T\approx 10^5$~K) X-ray simulated spectrum. The method relies on three key ingredients: (1) a well established emission continuum level; (2) a robust grid of photoionisation models spanning several orders of magnitude in gas density ($n_H$), plasma column density ($N_H$), and in ionization states; (3) theoretical curves of growth for a large set of atomic lines. By comp…
We present the results of a multi-epoch observational campaign on the mini-broad absorption line quasar (mini-BAL QSO) PG 1126-041 performed with XMM-Newton from 2004 to 2009. Time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy and simultaneous UV and X-ray photometry were performed on the most complete set of observations and on the deepest X-ray exposure of a mini-BAL QSO to date. Complex X-ray spectral variability, found on time scales of both months and hours, is best reproduced by means of variable and massive ionized absorbers along the line of sight. In the highest signal-to-noise observation, highly-ioni…
We present results from an analysis of the broad-band, 0.3-195 keV, X-ray spectra of 48 Seyfert 1-1.5 sources detected in the very hard X-rays with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). This sample is selected in an all-sky survey conducted in the 14-195 keV band. Therefore, our sources are largely unbiased towards both obscuration and host galaxy properties. Our detailed and uniform model fits to Suzaku/BAT and XMM-Newton/BAT spectra include the neutral absorption, direct power-law, reflected emission, soft excess, warm absorption, and narrow Fe K-alpha emission properties for the entire sam…
We present results from a study of broadband timing and spectral properties of EXO 2030+375 using a Suzaku observation. Pulsations with a period of 41.41 s and strong energy dependent pulse profiles were clearly detected up to ~100 keV. Narrow dips are seen in the profiles up to ~70 keV. Presence of prominent dips at several phases in the profiles up to such high energy ranges were not seen before. At higher energies, these dips gradually disappeared and the profile appeared single-peaked. The 1.0-200.0 keV broad-band spectrum is found to be well described by a partial covering high energy cut…
We present the analysis of grating spectra of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544 observed by XMM-Newton in 2004 and 2014. In a previous work on these data, we reported the discovery of a multi-component ultra-fast outflow that is capable of producing feedback in the host galaxy. We also reported the presence of a slow, multi-phase warm absorber. In this follow-up paper, we confirm that this low velocity absorber can be modeled by four layers of ionized gas. When crossing our line-of-sight, this gas presents peculiar changes along the 10-yr time scale elapsed between the two obser…
(Abridged) We present a two month Suzaku X-ray monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The campaign consists of 7 observations. We analyze the response in the opacity of the gas that forms the ionized absorber to ionizing flux variations. Despite variations by a factor of 4 in the impinging continuum, the soft X-ray spectra of the source show little spectral variations, suggesting no response from the ionized absorber. A detailed time modeling confirms the lack of opacity variations for an absorbing component with high ionization. Instead, the models tentatively suggest that the ionizatio…
We present the results from a detailed analysis of the 2007 Swift monitoring campaign of the quasar PG1211+143. We constructed broad-band, optical/UV/X-ray spectral energy distributions over three X-ray flux intervals. We fitted them with a model which accounts for the disc and the X-ray coronal emission and the warm absorber (well established in this source). The three flux spectra are well fitted by the model we considered. The disc inner temperature remains constant at ~2 eV, while X-rays are variable both in spectral slope and normalization. The absorber covers almost 90% of the central so…
Simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and HST observations, performed in March 2017, of the nearby ($z=0.184$) luminous quasar PDS 456 are presented. PDS 456 had a low X-ray flux compared to past observations, where the first of the two new XMM-Newton observations occurred during a pronounced dip in the X-ray lightcurve. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, attenuated by a soft X-ray absorber of column density $N_{\rm H}=6\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. An increase in obscuration occurs during the dip, which may be due to an X-ray eclipse. In addition, the persistent, fast Fe K outflow is pre…
We investigated, using spectral-timing analysis, the characterization of highly ionized outflows in Seyfert galaxies, the so-called warm absorbers. Here, we present our results on the extensive ~ 600 ks of XMM-Newton archival observations of the bright and highly variable Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051, whose spectrum has revealed a complex multicomponent wind. Making use of both RGS and EPIC-pn data, we performed a detailed analysis through a time-dependent photoionization code in combination with spectral and Fourier spectral-timing techniques. The source light curves and the warm absorber parame…
