We derive analytical solutions for the zero-energy states of degenerate shell obtained as a singular eigenevalue problem found in tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian of triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges. These analytical solutions are in agreement with previous TB and density functional theory (DFT) results for small graphene triangles and extend to arbitrary size. We also generalize these solutions to trapezoidal structure which allow us to study bowtie graphene devices.
The electronic properties of graphene superlattices have attracted intense interest that was further stimulated by the recent observation of novel many-body states at "magic" angles in twisted bilayer graphene (BLG). For very small ("marginal") twist angles of 0.1 deg, BLG has been shown to exhibit a strain-accompanied reconstruction that results in submicron-size triangular domains with the Bernal stacking. If the interlayer bias is applied to open an energy gap inside the domain regions making them insulating, marginally-twisted BLG is predicted to remain conductive due to a triangular netwo…
We propose a method to realize a broad class of tunable fermionic Hamiltonians in graphene bilayer. For that matter, we consider graphene bilayer functionalized with sp$^3$ defects that induce zero energy resonances hosting an individual electron each. The application of an off-plane electric field opens up a gap, so that the zero energy resonance becomes an in-gap bound state whose confinement scales inversely with the gap. Controlling both the distance among the defects and the applied electric field, we can define fermionic models, even lattices, whose hoppings and Coulomb interactions can …

We studied the surface structures of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene on Cu(103). The graphene covered Cu surface had (103) facets parallel to the Cu[010] direction, on which triangular patterns were formed. In contrast, the bare Cu surface showed no facets. Post-growth thermal annealing in an ultra-high vacuum induced surface changes on the Cu(103) facets. The reorganization of the Cu surface by the post-growth thermal annealing led to a change in the lattice strain and hole doping level of the CVD-grown graphene.
The concept of the diode is usually applied to electronic and thermal devices but very rarely for mechanical ones. A recently proposed fracture rectification effect in polymer-based structures with triangular voids defects has motivated us to test these ideas at the nanoscale using graphene membranes. Using fully-atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations we showed that robust rectification-like effects exist. The fracture can be 'guided' to easier propagate along one specific direction than its opposite. We also observed that there is an optimal value for the spacing between each void …
We theoretically study the Hofstadter butterfly of a triangular network model in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG). The band structure manifests periodicity in energy, mimicking that of Floquet systems. The butterfly diagrams provide fingerprints of the model parameters and reveal the hidden band topology. In a strong magnetic field, we establish that mTBLG realizes low-energy Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) carrying zero Chern number, while hosting chiral edge states in bulk gaps. We identify the FTIs by analyzing the nontrivial spectral flow in the Hofstadter butterfly, and by…
The geometric and electronic properties of Bi-adsorbed monolayer graphene, enriched by the strong effect of substrate, are investigated by first-principles calculations. The six-layered substrate, corrugated buffer layer, and slightly deformed monolayer graphene are all simulated. Adatom arrangements are thoroughly studied by analyzing the ground-state energies, bismuth adsorption energies, and Bi-Bi interaction energies of different adatom heights, inter-adatom distance, adsorption sites, and hexagonal positions. A hexagonal array of Bi atoms is dominated by the interactions between the buffe…
We theoretically study the lattice relaxation in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and its effect on the electronic band structure. We develop an effective continuum theory to describe the lattice relaxation in general TBGs and obtain the optimized structure to minimize the total energy. At small rotation angles $< 2^{\circ}$, in particular, we find that the relaxed lattice drastically reduces the area of AA-stacking region, and form a triangular domain structure with alternating AB and BA stacking regions. We then investigate the effect of the domain formation on the electronic band structur…
