We investigate the properties of norm-conserving pseudopotentials (effective core potentials) generated by inversion of the Hartree-Fock equations. In particular we investigate the asymptotic behaviour as $\mathbf{r} \to \infty$ and find that such pseudopotentials are non-local over all space, apart from a few special special cases such H and He. Such extreme non-locality leads to a lack of transferability and, within periodic boundary conditions, an undefined total energy. The extreme non-locality must therefore be removed, and we argue that the best way to accomplish this is a minor relaxation of the norm-conservation condition. This is implemented, and pseudopotentials for the atoms H$-$Ar are constructed and tested.
Fully-nonlocal two-projector norm-conserving pseudopotentials are shown to be compatible with a systematic approach to the optimization of convergence with the size of the plane-wave basis. A new formulation of the optimization is developed, including the ability to apply it to positive-energy atomic scattering states, and to enforce greater continuity in the pseudopotential. The generalization of norm-conservation to multiple projectors is reviewed and recast for the present purposes. Comparisons among the results of all-electron and one- and two-projector norm-conserving pseudopotential calc…
The accuracy of two widely used scalar-relativistic Hartree-Fock pseudopotentials, the Trail-Needs-Dirac-Fock (TNDF) and the Burkatzki-Filippi-Dolg (BFD) pseudopotentials, is assessed. The performance of the pseudopotentials is tested for a chemically representative set of 34 first-row molecules. All comparisons are made at the Hartree-Fock level of theory, and both sets of pseudopotentials give good results. The all-electron equilibrium geometries, molecular dissociation energies, and zero-point vibrational energies are reproduced a little more accurately by the TNDF pseudopotentials than the…
We report Hartree-Fock (HF) based pseudopotentials suitable for plane-wave calculations. Unlike typical effective core potentials, the present pseudopotentials are finite at the origin and exhibit rapid convergence in a plane-wave basis; the optimized pseudopotential method [A. M. Rappe et. al, Phys. Rev. B 41 1227--30 (1990)] improves plane-wave convergence. Norm-conserving HF pseudopotentials are found to develop long-range non-Coulombic behavior which does not decay faster than 1/r, and is non-local. This behavior, which stems from the nonlocality of the exchange potential, is remedied usin…
First-principles calculations in crystalline structures are often performed with a planewave basis set. To make the number of basis functions tractable two approximations are usually introduced: core electrons are frozen and the diverging Coulomb potential near the nucleus is replaced by a smoother expression. The norm-conserving pseudopotential was the first successful method to apply these approximations in a fully ab initio way. Later on, more efficient and more exact approaches were developed based on the ultrasoft and the projector augmented wave formalisms. These formalisms are however m…
Density functional theory (DFT) can run into serious difficulties with localized states in elements such as transition metals with occupied-d states and oxygen. In contrast, Hartree-Fock (HF) method can be a better approach for such localized states. Here, we develop HF pseudopotentials to be used alongside with DFT for solids. The computation cost is on par with standard DFT. Calculations for a range of II-VI, III-V and group-IV semiconductors with diverse physical properties show observably improved band gap for systems containing d-electrons, whereby pointing to a new direction in electroni…
We report smooth relativistic Hartree-Fock pseudopotentials (also known as averaged relativistic effective potentials or AREPs) and spin-orbit operators for the atoms H to Ba and Lu to Hg. We remove the unphysical extremely non-local behaviour resulting from the exchange interaction in a controlled manner, and represent the resulting pseudopotentials in an analytic form suitable for use within standard quantum chemistry codes. These pseudopotentials are suitable for use within Hartree-Fock and correlated wave function methods, including diffusion quantum Monte Carlo calculations.
Norm-conserving pseudopotentials are used by a significant number of electronic-structure packages, but the practical differences among codes in the handling of the associated data hinder their interoperability and make it difficult to compare their results. At the same time, existing formats lack provenance data, which makes it difficult to track and document computational workflows. To address these problems, we first propose a file format (PSML) that maps the basic concepts of the norm-conserving pseudopotential domain in a flexible form and supports the inclusion of provenance information …
We show that efficient norm-conserving pseudopotentials for electronic structure calculations can be obtained from a polynomial Ansatz for the potential. Our pseudopotential is a polynomial of degree ten in the radial variable and fulfills the same smoothness conditions imposed by the Troullier-Martins method [Phys. Rev. B 43, 1993 (1991)] where pseudopotentials are represented by a polynomial of degree twenty-two. We compare our method to the Troullier-Martins approach in electronic structure calculations for diamond and iron in the bcc structure and find that the two methods perform equally …
By adding a non-linear core correction to the well established Dual Space Gaussian type pseudopotentials for the chemical elements up to the third period, we construct improved pseudopotentials for the Perdew Burke Ernzerhof (PBE) functional and demonstrate that they exhibit excellent accuracy. Our benchmarks for the G2-1 test set show average atomization energy errors of only half a kcal/mol. The pseudopotentials also remain highly reliable for high pressure phases of crystalline solids. When supplemented by empirical dispersion corrections the average error in the interaction energy between …

In this paper, we show how to calculate analytical atomic forces within self-consistent density functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) approach in the case when ultra-soft or norm-conserving pseudopotentials are used. We show how to treat the non-local projection terms arising within the pseudopotential formalism and circumvent the problem of non-orthogonality of the Kohn-Sham eigenvectors. Our approach is, in principle, independent of the DMFT solver employed, and here was tested with the Hubbard I solver. We benchmark our formalism by comparing against the forces calculat…
We compare the behavior of the finite-temperature Hartree-Fock model with that of thermal density functional theory using both ground-state and temperature-dependent approximate exchange functionals. The test system is bcc Li in the temperature-density regime of warm dense matter (WDM). In this exchange-only case, there are significant qualitative differences in results from the three approaches. Those differences may be important for Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics studies of WDM with ground-state approximate density functionals and thermal occupancies. Such calculations require reliable …

We report diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations on MgO in the rock-salt and CsCl structures. The calculations are based on Hartree-Fock pseudopotentials, with the single-particle orbitals entering the correlated wave function being represented by a systematically convergeable cubic-spline basis. Systematic tests are presented on system-size errors using periodically repeating cells of up to over 600 atoms. The equilibrium lattice parameter of the rock-salt structure obtained within DMC is almost identical to the Hartree-Fock result, which is close to the experimental value. The DMC result f…
