We present the results of unfiltered and UBVR_cI_c band CCD photometry fast nova V2467Cyg. Our analysis of the data gives two distinct frequencies corresponding to periods of ~3.8h and ~35 min. The observed light curve of V2467 Cyg is typical for an intermediate polar.
We present fast timing photometric observations of the intermediate polar V2069 Cygni (RX J2123.7+4217) using the Optical Timing Analyzer (OPTIMA) at the 1.3 m telescope of Skinakas Observatory. The optical (450-950 nm) light curve of V2069 Cygni was measured with sub-second resolution for the first time during July 2009 and revealed a double-peaked pulsation with a period of 743.38 +0.25. A similar double-peaked modulation was found in the simultaneous Swift satellite observations. We suggest that this period represents the spin of the white dwarf accretor. Moreover, we present the results fr…
Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binaries which consist of a compact object - a white dwarf - and a red dwarf filling its Roche Lobe. Such systems are physical laboratories which enable study of the influence of magnetic fields on matter flows. They often exhibit spin-up or spin-down of the white dwarf, while some systems exhibit more complex behaviour of the spin period change. We monitor changes of the spin periods of white dwarfs in a sample of close binary systems to study interaction of the magnetic field and accretion processes as well as evolution of intermediate polars. Within …
We have obtained phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the old nova, and asynchronous polar V1500 Cyg. These new data reveal discrete cyclotron humps from two different strength magnetic fields. One region has B = 72 MG, while the other has B ~ 105 MG. With the detection of these features, we revisit the optical/near-IR light curves presented in Harrison & Campbell (2016), and find that the large photometric excesses observed in those data are fully reconcilable with cyclotron emission. These results, when combined with the X-ray observations that appeared to have maxima that repeated on the …
We present a high time resolution, multi-frequency linear polarization analysis of Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations during some of the brightest radio flaring (~1 Jy) activity of the 2015 outburst of V404 Cygni. The VLA simultaneously captured the radio evolution in two bands (each with two 1 GHz base-bands), recorded at 5/7 GHz and 21/26 GHz, allowing for a broadband polarimetric analysis. Given the source's high flux densities, we were able to measure polarization on timescales of ~13 minutes, constituting one of the highest temporal resolution radio polarimetric studies of a black …
Determining the evolution of the ejecta morphology of novae provides valuable information on the shaping mechanisms in operation at early stages of the nova outburst. Understanding such mechanisms has implications for studies of shaping for example in proto-Planetary Nebulae. Here we perform morpho-kinematical studies of V2491 Cyg using spectral data to determine the likely structure of the ejecta and its relationship to the central system and shaping mechanisms. We use Shape to model different morphologies and retrieve their spectra. These synthetic spectra are compared with observed spectra …
We present phase-resolved near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the classical nova V1500 Cyg to explore whether cyclotron emission is present in this system. While the spectroscopy do not indicate the presence of discrete cyclotron harmonic emission, the light curves suggest that a sizable fraction of its near-infrared fluxes are due to this component. The light curves of V1500 Cyg appear to remain dominated by emission from the heated face of the secondary star in this system. We have used infrared spectroscopy and photometry to search for other potential magnetic systems amongst old c…
We present a review of the results of long-term photometric monitoring of selected magnetic cataclysmic binary systems, which belong to a class named "Intermediate polars". We found a spin period variability in the V2306 Cygni system. We confirm the strong negative superhump variations in the intermediate polar RX J2133.7+5107 and improved a characteristic time of white dwarf spin-up in this system. We have investigated the periodic modulation of the spin phases with the orbital phase in MU Camelopardalis. We can propose simple explanation as the influence of orbital sidebands in the periodic …
Nova V2491 Cyg is one of just two detected pre-outburst in X-rays. The light curve of this nova exhibited a rare "re-brightening" which has been attributed by some as the system being a polar, whilst others claim that a magnetic WD is unlikely. By virtue of the nature of X-ray and spectroscopic observations the system has been proposed as a recurrent nova, however the adoption of a 0.1 day orbital period is generally seen as incompatible with such a system. In this research note we address the nature of the progenitor system and the source of the 0.1 day periodicity. Through the combination of…
We studied Romanov V48, which had been considered as a possible polar below the period minimum (orbital period of 0.0420991 d). We analyzed the publicly available Zwicky Transient Facility data and found that this object is an intermediate polar with an orbital period of 0.102312 d (in the period gap) and a spin period of 0.0420991 d. The amplitude of the spin variation was very large (0.6 mag) and the profile has been confirmed to vary with the beat period of 0.071534 d. The ratio between the spin and orbital periods was large and the system resembles the intermediate polar DW Cnc below the p…
Aims. To determine the credentials of nine candidate intermediate polars in order to confirm whether or not they are magnetic cataclysmic variables. Methods. Frequency analysis of RXTE and XMM data was used to search for temporal variations which could be associated with the spin period of the magnetic white dwarf. X-ray spectral analysis was carried out to characterise the emission and absorption properties of each target. Results. The hard X-ray light curve of V2069 Cyg shows a pulse period of 743.2 s, and its spectrum is fit by an absorbed bremsstrahlung model with an iron line, confirming …
We present high speed optical, spectroscopic and Swift X-ray observations made during the dwarf nova superoutburst of CC Scl in November 2011. An orbital period of 1.383 h and superhump period of 1.443 h were measured, but the principal new finding is that CC Scl is a previously unrecognised intermediate polar, with a white dwarf spin period of 389.49 s which is seen in both optical and Swift X-ray light curves only during the outburst. In this it closely resembles the old nova GK Per, but unlike the latter has one of the shortest orbital periods among intermediate polars.
We present time-resolved photometry of a cataclysmic variable discovered in the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Halpha Survey of the northern galactic plane, IPHAS J062746.41+014811.3 and classify the system as the fourth deeply eclipsing intermediate polar known with an orbital period of Porb=8.16 h, and spin period of Pspin=2210 s. The system shows mild variations of its brightness, that appear to be accompanied by a change in the amplitude of the spin modulation at optical wavelengths, and a change in the morphology of the eclipse profile. The inferred magnetic moment of the white dwarf …
Photometric observations of V597 Pup made in 2008, 9.1 mag below maximum, 4 months after eruption, showed no certain orbital modulation but exhibited a quintuplet of oscillations centred on a period 261.9 s and uniform splitting at a frequency ~2.68 h^{-1}. One year later the system had fallen in brightness by a further 2.5 mag, showed deep eclipses with a period of 2.6687 h, and the 261.9 s modulation at a reduced amplitude. There is often power near the `subharmonic' at 524 s, showing that the shorter periods observed are actually first harmonics. V597 Pup is thus an intermediate polar and i…
We report results of photometry of the intermediate polar V515 And. The observations were obtained over 33 nights in 2008 and 2009. The total duration of the observations was 233 h. We clearly detected two oscillations with periods of 465.48493\pm0.00007$ and 488.61822\pm0.00009 s, which may be the white dwarf spin period and the orbital sideband. The semi-amplitudes of the oscillations are 25 and 20 mmag, accordingly. The oscillation with a period of 465.48493 s has a stable smooth asymmetric pulse profile whereas the pulse profile of the oscillation with a period of 488.61822 s reveals signi…
We aim to study the optical and near-infrared linear polarimetric properties of a sample of young M7-L7 dwarfs ($\approx$1-500 Myr) with spectroscopic signatures of low- and intermediate-gravity atmospheres. We collected optical ($RIZ$) and near-infrared ($YJHK_{\rm s}$) linear polarimetry images on various time scales from $\sim$0.2 h to months. Linear polarization degrees in the interval 0-1.5\% ($I$- and $J$-bands) were measured with accuracies ranging from $\pm$0.1 $\%$ to $\pm$0.9 $\%$ depending on the observing filter and the target brightness. We found that the young field dwarfs in our…
We characterize the flickering observed in the optical lightcurve of the Intermediate Polar system V709 Cas by determining its position in the alpha-Sigma as in the Fritz and Bruch (1998) classification scheme. Sigma represents the strength of flickering at a given timescale, while alpha describes the energy distribution of the flickering at different time scales. Here alpha is independently obtained with both the wavelets and the Hurst R/S analysis. The flickering shows self-similarity in the time scale ranging from tens of minutes down to 10 seconds with stochastic persistent memory in time.…
A three-dimensional numerical model for an accretion process investigation in the magnetosphere of a white dwarf in magnetic cataclysmic variables is developed. The model assumes that the white dwarf has a dipole magnetic field with its symmetry axis inclined to the rotation axis. The model is based on the equations of modified MHD, that describe the mean flow parameters in the wave MHD turbulence. Diffusion of the magnetic field and radiative heating and cooling are taken into account. The suitability of the model is confirmed by modeling the accretion in a typical intermediate polar. The com…
We report the detailed history of spin-period changes in five intermediate polars (DQ Herculis, AO Piscium, FO Aquarii, V1223 Sagittarii, and BG Canis Minoris) during the 30-60 years since their original discovery. Most are slowly spinning up, although there are sometimes years-long episodes of spin-down. This is supportive of the idea that the underlying magnetic white dwarfs are near spin equilibrium. In addition to the ~40 stars sharing many properties and defined by their strong, pulsed X-ray emission, there are a few rotating much faster (P<80 s), whose membership in the class is still in…
We report an eclipse mapping study of the intermediate polar DQ Her based on time-resolved optical spectroscopy (~3800-5000A) covering 4 eclipses. Eclipse maps of the HeII 4686 line indicate that an azimuthally-and vertically-extended bright spot at disk rim is important source of reprocessing of x-rays from the magnetic poles. The disk spectrum is flat with no Balmer or Helium lines in the inner regions, and shows double-peaked emission lines in the intermediate and outer disk regions while the slope of the continuum becomes progressively redder with increasing radius. The inferred disk tempe…
Based on XMM--Newton X-ray observations IGR J19552+0044 appears to be either a pre-polar or an asynchronous polar. We conducted follow-up optical observations to identify the sources and periods of variability precisely and to classify this X-ray source correctly. Extensive multicolor photometric and medium- to high-resolution spectroscopy observations were performed and period search codes were applied to sort out the complex variability of the object. We found firm evidence of discording spectroscopic (81.29+/-0.01m) and photometric (83.599+/-0.002m) periods that we ascribe to the white dwar…
We present the discovery of a magnetic field on the white dwarf component in the detached post common envelope binary (PCEB) CC Cet. Magnetic white dwarfs in detached PCEBs are extremely rare, in contrast to the high incidence of magnetism in single white dwarfs and cataclysmic variables. We find Zeeman-split absorption lines in both ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra and archival optical spectra of CC Cet. Model fits to the lines return a mean magnetic field strength of approximately 600-700 kG. Differences in the best-fit magnetic field strength between two separate HST observa…
We present results of CCD photometric study of the intermediate polars FO Aqr, EX Hya and RXS J180340.0+401214 = USNO-A2.0 1275-09738647 and corresponding corrected ephemerids.
We observed the 2014 superoutburst of the SU UMa-type intermediate polar CC Scl. We detected superhumps with a mean period of 0.05998(2) d during the superoutburst plateau and during three nights after the fading. During the post-superoutburst stage after three nights, a stable superhump period of 0.059523(6) d was detected. We found that this object is an eclipsing system with an orbital period of 0.058567233(8) d. By assuming that the disk radius in the post-superoutburst phase is similar to those in other SU UMa-type dwarf novae, we obtained a mass ratio of q=0.072(3) from the dynamical pre…
Aims. To establish the X-ray properties of the intermediate polar candidate IGR J15094-6649 and therefore confirm its inclusion into the class. Methods. 42 856 s of X-ray data from RXTE was analysed. Frequency analysis was used to constrain temporal variations and spectral analysis used to characterise the emission and absorption properties. Results. A spin period of 809.7+-0.6 s is present, revealed as a complex pulse profile whose modulation depth decreases with increasing X-ray energy. The spectrum is well fitted by either a 19+-4 keV Bremsstrahlung or Gamma=1.8+-0.1 power law, with an iron…
The disc instability model (DIM) has been very successful in explaining the dwarf nova outbursts observed in cataclysmic variables. When, as in intermediate polars (IP), the accreting white dwarf is magnetized, the disc is truncated at the magnetospheric radius, but for mass-transfer rates corresponding to the thermal-viscous instability such systems should still exhibit dwarf-nova outbursts. Yet, the majority of intermediate polars in which the magnetic field is not large enough to completely disrupt the accretion disc, seem to be stable, and the rare observed outbursts, in particular in syst…
We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the Galactic Bulge Survey X-ray source CXOGBS J174954.5-294335 (hereafter, referred to as CX19). CX19 is a long period, eclipsing intermediate polar type cataclysmic variable with broad, single-peaked Balmer and Paschen emission lines along with HeII $\lambda4686$ and Bowen blend emission features. With coverage of one full and two partial eclipses and archival photometry, we determine the ephemeris for CX19 to be HJD(eclipse) = 2455691.8581(5) + 0.358704(2)$\times$N. We also recovered the white dwarf spin period of P$_{\rm …
Observed hard X-ray spectra of intermediate polars are determined mainly by the accretion flow velocity at the white dwarf surface, which is normally close to the free-fall velocity. This allows to estimate the white dwarf masses as the white dwarf mass-radius relation M-R and the expected free-fall velocities at the surface are well known. This method is widely used, however, derived white dwarf masses M can be systematically underestimated because the accretion flow is stopped at and re-accelerates from the magnetospheric boundary R_m, and therefore, its velocity at the surface will be lower…
Some intermediate polars show outbursts that are much shorter than those observed in normal dwarf novae, and whose origin has remained unelucidated for a long time. We examine here the case of V1223 Sgr, an intermediate polar that showed a short outburst in 1984, and compare the outburst characteristics with the predictions of the magnetospheric gating model. We use the archival data from the AAVSO from which we extract the outburst profiles. We use our code for computing the time-dependent evolution of an accretion disc truncated by the white dwarf magnetic field, using a simple description o…
FO Aqr is a bright intermediate polar that has long displayed large amplitude photometric variations corresponding to the 20.9 min spin period of its white dwarf. Between 2016 and 2020, the system suffered a series of unprecedented low-states, but recent data shows that it has now recovered to its normal optical luminosity. We compare the light curves obtained by K2/Kepler in 2014 with photometry from the TESS mission obtained in 2021. We find that the spin pulse that had been the dominant feature of the light curve in 2014 is now weak over the second half the binary orbit and that a beat puls…
Based on the X-ray observations from XMM-Newton and Swift, and optical observations from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and AAVSO, we present temporal and spectral properties of probable intermediate polar SWIFT J0503.7-2819. The X-ray light curve shows two distinctive features, where possibly the second pole seems to be active during the middle of the XMM-Newton observations. Present analysis confirms and also refines the previously reported orbital period of SWIFT J0503.7-2819 as 81.65$\pm$0.04 min. The X-ray and optical variations of this target have been found to occur at the…
We report on XMM-Newton X-ray observations that reveal CTCV J2056-3014 to be an unusual accretion-powered, intermediate polar (IP) system. It is a member of the class of X-ray-faint IPs whose space density remains unconstrained but potentially very high, with L$_{x,0.3-12 keV}$ of 1.8$\times$10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We discovered a coherent 29.6s pulsation in X-rays that was also revealed in our reanalysis of published optical data, showing that the system harbors the fastest-spinning, securely known white dwarf (WD) so far. There is no substantial X-ray absorption in the system. Accretion occu…
